Chapter 1

1.1 Dhritarashtra to Sanjaya

dharmakṣetre kurukṣetre samavetā yuyutsavaḥ | māmakāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva kimakurvata saṃjaya ||

Dhritarashtra said: On the field of dharma, on the field of the Kurus, gathered together and eager to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do, Sanjaya?

Meaning today and context

Even the opening line divides the world into 'mine' and 'theirs'. Much of the conflict that follows begins in that small word, and the battlefield is also called a field of dharma.

The blind king Dhritarashtra asks his charioteer Sanjaya what happened when his sons and the Pandavas gathered at Kurukshetra eager to fight. The whole Gita is Sanjaya's answer.

1.2 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

dṛṣṭvā tu pāṇḍavānīkaṃ vyūḍhaṃ duryodhanastadā | ācāryamupasaṃgamya rājā vacanamabravīt ||

Sanjaya said: Then, seeing the army of the Pandavas drawn up in battle order, King Duryodhana approached his teacher and spoke these words.

Meaning today and context

Duryodhana's first move on seeing the other side is to run to someone for reassurance. Anxiety often shows itself before any words do.

Sanjaya begins his report: Duryodhana sees the Pandava army arrayed for battle and goes to his teacher Drona.

1.3 Duryodhana to Drona

paśyaitāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāmācārya mahatīṃ camūm | vyūḍhāṃ drupadaputreṇa tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā ||

Look, teacher, at this great army of the sons of Pandu, arrayed by your own clever pupil, the son of Drupada.

Meaning today and context

Duryodhana needles his own teacher with a reminder of divided loyalty. Insecure leaders often motivate through barbs rather than trust.

Duryodhana points out the Pandava army to Drona, noting pointedly that it was arrayed by Drona's own pupil, Dhrishtadyumna son of Drupada.

1.4 Duryodhana to Drona

Here are heroes, mighty archers equal in battle to Bhima and Arjuna: Yuyudhana, Virata, and Drupada the great chariot-warrior.

Meaning today and context

A worried mind counts the strengths of the other side first. This is the description of a man measuring his fear.

Duryodhana begins listing the great warriors on the Pandava side.

1.5 Duryodhana to Drona

Duryodhana continues naming the Pandava allies.

Meaning today and context

Among the names are young sons, Abhimanyu and Draupadi's children. War will take the next generation too.

Duryodhana completes his list of the leading warriors on the Pandava side.

asmākaṃ tu viśiṣṭā ye tānnibodha dvijottama | nāyakā mama sainyasya saṃjñārthaṃ tānbravīmi te ||

Now hear, best of the twice-born, about the most distinguished on our side, the leaders of my army. I name them for your information.

Meaning today and context

Having listed the threat, he reassures himself by listing his own strength. We often talk ourselves into confidence this way.

Duryodhana turns to name the leaders of his own army for Drona.

1.8 Duryodhana to Drona

Meaning today and context

'For my sake': Duryodhana sees others' lives as spent on him. Pride can make a person forget the cost others pay.

Duryodhana adds that many other heroes are ready to die for him.

1.10 Duryodhana to Drona

aparyāptaṃ tadasmākaṃ balaṃ bhīṣmābhirakṣitam | paryāptaṃ tvidameteṣāṃ balaṃ bhīmābhirakṣitam ||

Our force, guarded by Bhishma, is not enough (or: is beyond measure); while their force, guarded by Bhima, is enough (or: is limited).

Meaning today and context

Whichever reading one takes, the boast and the doubt sit side by side. Bravado and fear often live in the same sentence.

Duryodhana compares the two forces. The key words can be read two ways: his army is 'unlimited' or 'insufficient', theirs 'limited' or 'sufficient'.

1.11 Duryodhana to Drona

ayaneṣu ca sarveṣu yathābhāgamavasthitāḥ | bhīṣmamevābhirakṣantu bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi ||

Meaning today and context

His plan rests on protecting one elder. When everything depends on one person, fear of losing them shapes every order.

Overwhelmed with pity, Arjuna begins his lament to Krishna on seeing his own people ready to fight.

1.29 Arjuna to Krishna

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati | vepathuśca śarīre me romaharṣaśca jāyate ||

'my limbs give way and my mouth is parched; my body trembles and my hair stands on end.'

This describes Arjuna's distress, not a diagnosis. If you are having symptoms like these often, or they frighten you, please talk to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Grief and dread show up in the body. The Gita describes it plainly, without shame: trembling and a dry mouth are what happens to a person in deep distress.

Arjuna describes his body giving way: limbs failing, mouth dry, trembling, hair standing on end.

1.30 Arjuna to Krishna

gāṇḍīvaṃ sraṃsate hastāttvakcaiva paridahyate | na ca śaknomyavasthātuṃ bhramatīva ca me manaḥ ||

'Gandiva slips from my hand and my skin is burning. I cannot stand steady, and my mind seems to be whirling.'

Meaning today and context

The tool of his life's skill falls from his hand. When grief overwhelms, even the things we are best at can feel impossible.

Arjuna continues: his bow slips from his hand, his skin burns, he cannot stand, and his mind is reeling.

1.31 Arjuna to Krishna

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava | na ca śreyo'nupaśyāmi hatvā svajanamāhave ||

'And I see evil omens, Keshava. I see no good in killing my own people in battle.'

Meaning today and context

When a choice goes against our heart, everything starts to look like a bad sign. Arjuna's question, 'what good can come of this?', is honest and deserves an answer.

Arjuna says he sees ill omens and can see no good in killing his own kin.

1.32 Arjuna to Krishna

na kāṅkṣe vijayaṃ kṛṣṇa na ca rājyaṃ sukhāni ca | kiṃ no rājyena govinda kiṃ bhogairjīvitena vā ||

'I do not want victory, Krishna, nor a kingdom, nor pleasures. What use is a kingdom to us, Govinda, what use are enjoyments, or even life itself?'

Arjuna's 'what use is life' comes from despair, and Krishna goes on to answer it. If you feel your own life has no use, please reach out now: call Tele-MANAS 14416 or someone you trust.

Meaning today and context

When winning means losing the people who give life meaning, success feels empty. Arjuna is asking what anything is for if the ones we love are gone.

Arjuna says he wants neither victory nor kingdom nor pleasures: what use are they, or even life?

1.33 Arjuna to Krishna

yeṣāmarthe kāṅkṣitaṃ no rājyaṃ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca | ta ime'vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṃstyaktvā dhanāni ca ||

'Those for whose sake we desired a kingdom, enjoyments and pleasures stand here in battle, having given up their lives and wealth.'

Meaning today and context

We work and strive for the sake of the people we love. When the fight itself puts them at risk, the reason for striving disappears.

Arjuna explains: the very people for whose sake they wanted a kingdom and pleasures are here, ready to give up their lives and wealth.

1.34 Arjuna to Krishna

ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrāstathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ | mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ syālāḥ saṃbandhinastathā ||

'Teachers, fathers, sons, and grandfathers too; maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other kin.'

Meaning today and context

Arjuna names each relationship one by one. Grief makes us count exactly who we stand to lose.

Arjuna lists the relatives standing in the armies: teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, uncles, in-laws.

1.35 Arjuna to Krishna

etānna hantumicchāmi ghnato'pi madhusūdana | api trailokyarājyasya hetoḥ kiṃ nu mahīkṛte ||

'I do not wish to kill them, Madhusudana, even if they kill me; not even for rule over the three worlds, let alone for the sake of the earth.'

Meaning today and context

Some prices are too high for any gain. Arjuna voices the real feeling that no inheritance or position is worth harming one's own people.

Arjuna says he does not want to kill them even if they kill him, not even for rule over the three worlds, let alone for the earth.

1.36 Arjuna to Krishna

nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrānnaḥ kā prītiḥ syājjanārdana | pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātatāyinaḥ ||

'What joy could we have in killing the sons of Dhritarashtra, Janardana? Only sin would cling to us for killing these aggressors.'

Meaning today and context

Even when someone has wronged us badly, hurting them may not bring the relief we expect. Arjuna senses that revenge would leave a stain on the one who takes it.

Arjuna asks what joy could come from killing Dhritarashtra's sons; even though they are aggressors, killing them would bring sin.

1.37 Arjuna to Krishna

tasmānnārhā vayaṃ hantuṃ dhārtarāṣṭrānsabāndhavān | svajanaṃ hi kathaṃ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava ||

'So it is not right for us to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra, our own kin. Having killed our own people, how could we be happy, Madhava?'

These are Arjuna's words in confusion; Krishna goes on to answer them. Do not present this verse alone as the Gita's final advice.

Meaning today and context

Happiness built on the ruin of our own family is not happiness. Arjuna's question deserves a real answer, and the rest of the Gita gives one.

Arjuna concludes that they should not kill their own kinsmen: how could they be happy after that?

1.38 Arjuna to Krishna

yadyapyete na paśyanti lobhopahatacetasaḥ | kulakṣayakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ mitradrohe ca pātakam ||

'Even if these, their minds overcome by greed, do not see the evil of destroying a family or the sin of betraying friends,'

Meaning today and context

Greed can blind people to what they are destroying. Seeing it in others does not mean we should copy them.

Arjuna notes that the Kauravas, blinded by greed, do not see the wrong in destroying a family and betraying friends.

1.39 Arjuna to Krishna

kathaṃ na jñeyamasmābhiḥ pāpādasmānnivartitum | kulakṣayakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ prapaśyadbhirjanārdana ||

'why should we not know to turn back from this sin, we who clearly see the evil of destroying a family, Janardana?'

Meaning today and context

If we can see the harm clearly, we bear more responsibility than those who can't. Arjuna's argument is that knowing better means acting better.

Arjuna asks why they, who can see the evil of destroying a family, should not turn back from it.

1.40 Arjuna to Krishna

kulakṣaye praṇaśyanti kuladharmāḥ sanātanāḥ | dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnamadharmo'bhibhavatyuta ||

'When a family is destroyed, its ancient family traditions perish; and when dharma is lost, lawlessness overcomes the whole family.'

This is Arjuna's argument, rooted in the family and social customs of his time, and Krishna does not accept it as a reason to abandon his duty. Read it as a concern for family values, never as a reason to judge anyone by birth or community.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna fears that war will break the bonds and customs that hold a family together. Families torn by conflict do often lose the shared values that kept them steady.

Arjuna argues that when a family is destroyed, its age-old traditions perish, and lawlessness takes over the whole family.

1.41 Arjuna to Krishna

adharmābhibhavātkṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kulastriyaḥ | strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya jāyate varṇasaṃkaraḥ ||

'When lawlessness prevails, Krishna, the women of the family go astray; and when women go astray, Varshneya, there arises a mixing of varnas.'

These are Arjuna's fears in his confusion, voiced in the social ideas of his time about lineage, women's conduct and varna; Krishna does not endorse this argument and goes on to answer him. Never use this verse to blame or control women, to judge anyone by birth, caste or parentage, or to oppose marriages across communities.

Meaning today and context

This is Arjuna's fear expressed in the social ideas of an ancient warrior society. What it shows today is how a frightened mind piles up reasons to justify retreat, not a teaching about women or birth.

Arjuna continues his argument: lawlessness corrupts the women of the family, and that leads to the mixing of varnas.

1.42 Arjuna to Krishna

saṃkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya ca | patanti pitaro hyeṣāṃ luptapiṇḍodakakriyāḥ ||

'This mixing leads to hell both the destroyers of the family and the family itself; for their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of rice-balls and water.'

Arjuna draws on beliefs of his time about ancestral rites. Underneath is a real worry many share: that family conflict cuts us off from those who came before.

Arjuna argues that this mixing leads the family and its destroyers to hell, and their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of food and water.

1.43 Arjuna to Krishna

doṣairetaiḥ kulaghnānāṃ varṇasaṃkarakārakaiḥ | utsādyante jātidharmāḥ kuladharmāśca śāśvatāḥ ||

'Through these wrongs of the destroyers of families, which bring about the mixing of varnas, the age-old duties of community and family are uprooted.'

Arjuna's worry is about social order collapsing after a war. The verse records the fears of his age; it is not a rule for how anyone should be treated today.

Arjuna says the wrongs of the family-destroyers, which cause the mixing of varnas, uproot the lasting customs of community and family.

1.44 Arjuna to Krishna

utsannakuladharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana | narake niyataṃ vāso bhavatītyanuśuśruma ||

'We have heard, Janardana, that people whose family traditions have been destroyed surely dwell in hell.'

Notice 'we have heard': Arjuna leans on received tradition rather than his own insight. In crisis, we often grab at what we were told rather than think afresh.

Arjuna ends this line of argument: he has heard that people whose family traditions are destroyed live in hell.

1.45 Arjuna to Krishna

aho bata mahatpāpaṃ kartuṃ vyavasitā vayam | yadrājyasukhalobhena hantuṃ svajanamudyatāḥ ||

'Alas! What a great sin we have resolved to commit, setting out to kill our own people out of greed for the pleasures of a kingdom.'

Meaning today and context

Sometimes we suddenly see our own ambition through the eyes of the people it will hurt. That moment of shock is painful, and it can be the start of honest reflection.

Arjuna cries out in dismay that they were about to commit a great sin, ready to kill their own people out of greed for kingdom and pleasure.

1.46 Arjuna to Krishna

yadi māmapratīkāramaśastraṃ śastrapāṇayaḥ | dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyustanme kṣemataraṃ bhavet ||

'It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me in battle, unarmed and not resisting.'

This is Arjuna at his lowest, and Krishna does not accept this conclusion. If you feel you would be better off dead or wish someone would harm you, please reach out now: call Tele-MANAS 14416 or someone you trust.

Meaning today and context

In deep despair a person can feel that being destroyed would be easier than choosing. This is the lowest point of Arjuna's grief, and it is exactly where Krishna's help begins.

Arjuna says it would be better for him if the Kauravas, weapons in hand, killed him unarmed and unresisting.

1.47 Sanjaya to Dhritarashtra

evamuktvārjunaḥ saṃkhye rathopastha upāviśat | visṛjya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ śokasaṃvignamānasaḥ ||

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna sank down on the seat of the chariot, casting aside his bow and arrows, his mind overwhelmed by grief.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes grief simply puts us down. The Gita lets Arjuna sit with it for a whole chapter before any teaching begins; mourning comes first.

Sanjaya describes Arjuna, having spoken, casting aside his bow and arrows and sinking down on the chariot seat, his mind shaken by grief.
