Chapter 6

6.1 Krishna to Arjuna

anāśritaḥ karmaphalaṃ kāryaṃ karma karoti yaḥ | sa saṃnyāsī ca yogī ca na niragnirna cākriyaḥ ||

One who does the work that ought to be done, without depending on its fruit, is a renunciate and a yogi; not the one who merely gives up the sacred fire, nor the one who gives up action.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation is not about dropping your duties or looking detached from outside. It is doing what needs doing while not hanging your peace on how it turns out.

Krishna opens chapter 6 by redefining renunciation: the true renunciate and yogi is the one who does what must be done without leaning on its fruit.

6.2 Krishna to Arjuna

yaṃ saṃnyāsamiti prāhuryogaṃ taṃ viddhi pāṇḍava | na hyasaṃnyastasaṃkalpo yogī bhavati kaścana ||

What they call renunciation, know that to be yoga, Pandava; for no one becomes a yogi without renouncing the scheming intention (sankalpa).

Meaning today and context

The inner work is the same whether you leave the world or stay in it: let go of the constant mental plotting about what you will get. That plotting is what scatters the mind.

Krishna equates renunciation with yoga: no one becomes a yogi without giving up self-willed intention (sankalpa).

6.3 Krishna to Arjuna

ārurukṣormuneryogaṃ karma kāraṇamucyate | yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śamaḥ kāraṇamucyate ||

For the sage who wishes to ascend to yoga, action is said to be the means; for that same person, once he has ascended, calm (shama) is said to be the means.

Meaning today and context

Different stages need different medicine. Early on, honest work and engagement shape you; later, stillness deepens what work began. Don't skip the first stage for the second.

Krishna distinguishes two stages: for one trying to climb into yoga, action is the means; for one who has climbed, calm is the means.

6.4 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣu na karmasvanuṣajjate | sarvasaṃkalpasaṃnyāsī yogārūḍhastadocyate ||

When one is attached neither to the objects of the senses nor to actions, and has renounced all sankalpa, then one is said to have ascended to yoga.

This describes an advanced renunciate. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Real steadiness shows when neither pleasures nor busyness grip you. The root to loosen is the mind's stream of wanting and scheming.

Krishna describes the person who has 'ascended' to yoga.

6.5 Krishna to Arjuna

uddharedātmanātmānaṃ nātmānamavasādayet | ātmaiva hyātmano bandhurātmaiva ripurātmanaḥ ||

Let one lift oneself by oneself; let one not drag oneself down. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self.

This verse encourages self-effort; it does not mean you must cope alone. If you feel persistently low, hopeless or think of harming yourself, please reach out to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7). Seeking help is itself a way of lifting yourself.

Meaning today and context

How you treat yourself matters. The same mind that runs you down can raise you up; small acts of care and effort towards yourself are where change begins.

Krishna gives one of the Gita's central teachings on self-effort: lift yourself by yourself, for you are your own friend and your own enemy.

6.6 Krishna to Arjuna

bandhurātmātmanastasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ | anātmanastu śatrutve vartetātmaiva śatruvat ||

The self is a friend to the one by whom the self has been mastered; but for one who has not mastered himself, that very self behaves with hostility, like an enemy.

Calling the self an 'enemy' is not a reason for self-hatred. If harsh self-criticism, low mood or hopelessness persist, talk to someone and seek help; Tele-MANAS 14416 is free and available 24x7.

Meaning today and context

An untrained mind and unchecked habits work against us like an enemy within. With patient discipline the same mind becomes our closest ally.

Krishna explains when the self is friend and when it is enemy.

6.7 Krishna to Arjuna

jitātmanaḥ praśāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ | śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu tathā mānāvamānayoḥ ||

For one who has mastered himself and is at peace, the supreme Self is steadily present, in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, and likewise in honour and dishonour.

Meaning today and context

Praise and insult, comfort and discomfort will keep coming. A settled mind is not one that avoids them but one that stays itself through them.

Krishna describes the inner state of one who has mastered himself.

6.8 Krishna to Arjuna

jñānavijñānatṛptātmā kūṭastho vijitendriyaḥ | yukta ityucyate yogī samaloṣṭāśmakāñcanaḥ ||

The yogi whose self is content with knowledge and realisation, who stands unshaken, who has conquered the senses, to whom a clod, a stone and gold are the same, is called 'united' (yukta).

Meaning today and context

Knowing something in theory is a start; making it your own experience brings contentment. Then the pull of possessions and status weakens on its own.

Krishna continues describing the yogi who is steady.

6.9 Krishna to Arjuna

suhṛnmitrāryudāsīnamadhyasthadveṣyabandhuṣu | sādhuṣvapi ca pāpeṣu samabuddhirviśiṣyate ||

One who has the same mind towards well-wishers, friends, foes, the indifferent, the neutral, the hateful and kinsmen, towards the good and even towards wrongdoers, excels.

Being even-minded does not mean tolerating abuse or staying near people who harm you. You can see someone without hatred and still protect yourself.

Meaning today and context

Most of us judge people by how they treat us. An even mind does not mean approving of wrong; it means not letting likes and grudges colour how you see and treat each person.

Krishna says the one who is even-minded towards everyone, friend or foe, good or wrongdoer, is the best.

6.10 Krishna to Arjuna

yogī yuñjīta satatamātmānaṃ rahasi sthitaḥ | ekākī yatacittātmā nirāśīraparigrahaḥ ||

The yogi should constantly concentrate the mind, staying in a secluded place, alone, with mind and body controlled, free from expectation and without possessions.

This is guidance for meditation, not advice to withdraw from family, work or people who need you. Meditation should be gentle. Do not force long sitting through pain, and if you live with trauma or a mental-health condition, learn with a qualified teacher or alongside your clinician; stop if practice brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

Meditation needs some quiet time and space where you are not pulled by expectations or things. Even a few undisturbed minutes in a quiet corner each day count.

Krishna begins practical instructions for meditation.

6.11 Krishna to Arjuna

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya sthiramāsanamātmanaḥ | nātyucchritaṃ nātinīcaṃ cailājinakuśottaram ||

In a clean place, setting up for himself a firm seat, neither too high nor too low, covered with kusha grass, a deerskin and a cloth,

Meaning today and context

Practical care for your seat matters: a clean, steady, comfortable place helps the body settle so the mind can. Today a mat or cushion serves the same purpose.

Krishna describes the meditation seat.

6.12 Krishna to Arjuna

tatraikāgraṃ manaḥ kṛtvā yatacittendriyakriyaḥ | upaviśyāsane yuñjyādyogamātmaviśuddhaye ||

Sitting there on the seat, making the mind one-pointed, with the workings of mind and senses held in check, one should practise yoga for the purification of oneself.

Meditation should be gentle. Do not force long sitting through pain, and if you live with trauma or a mental-health condition, learn with a qualified teacher or alongside your clinician; stop if practice brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

The purpose of sitting is not performance but inner cleaning: gathering the scattered mind so that it becomes clearer over time.

Krishna continues: seated there, one should practise yoga with a one-pointed mind.

6.13 Krishna to Arjuna

samaṃ kāyaśirogrīvaṃ dhārayannacalaṃ sthiraḥ | saṃprekṣya nāsikāgraṃ svaṃ diśaścānavalokayan ||

Holding body, head and neck erect and still, steady, gazing as it were at the tip of one's own nose, and not looking around in any direction,

Meditation should be gentle. Do not force long sitting through pain, and if you live with trauma or a mental-health condition, learn with a qualified teacher or alongside your clinician; stop if practice brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

An upright, relaxed posture and a gaze that is not darting about help the mind settle. The point is calm attention, not strain.

Krishna describes the posture and gaze for meditation.

6.14 Krishna to Arjuna

praśāntātmā vigatabhīrbrahmacārivrate sthitaḥ | manaḥ saṃyamya maccitto yukta āsīta matparaḥ ||

Serene, free of fear, firm in the vow of the brahmachari, restraining the mind, with thought fixed on me, one should sit united, holding me as the highest.

Meditation should be gentle. Do not force long sitting through pain, and if you live with trauma or a mental-health condition, learn with a qualified teacher or alongside your clinician; stop if practice brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

The inner attitude matters as much as the posture: calm, unafraid, disciplined, and turned towards what you hold highest.

Krishna continues the meditation instructions, now about the inner attitude.

6.15 Krishna to Arjuna

yuñjannevaṃ sadātmānaṃ yogī niyatamānasaḥ | śāntiṃ nirvāṇaparamāṃ matsaṃsthāmadhigacchati ||

Thus always uniting himself, the yogi of disciplined mind attains peace, which culminates in nirvana and rests in me.

Meditation should be gentle. Do not force long sitting through pain, and if you live with trauma or a mental-health condition, learn with a qualified teacher or alongside your clinician; stop if practice brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

Regular, patient practice leads to a peace that is not a passing mood but a settled depth.

Krishna states the result of practising meditation this way.

6.16 Krishna to Arjuna

nātyaśnatastu yogo'sti na caikāntamanaśnataḥ | na cātisvapnaśīlasya jāgrato naiva cārjuna ||

Yoga is not for one who eats too much, nor for one who does not eat at all; not for one given to too much sleep, nor for one who keeps awake too much, Arjuna.

This is a principle of moderation, not dietary or medical advice. Do not fast, cut food or sleep, or change your diet on the basis of this verse; if you have an eating difficulty, sleep problem or health condition, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Extremes in either direction undermine a steady mind. Overdoing and depriving yourself both get in the way; balance is itself part of the practice.

Krishna warns against extremes: yoga is not for the one who overeats or starves, oversleeps or stays awake too long.

6.17 Krishna to Arjuna

yuktāhāravihārasya yuktaceṣṭasya karmasu | yuktasvapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkhahā ||

For one who is moderate in food and recreation, measured in effort in actions, and moderate in sleep and waking, yoga becomes the destroyer of sorrow.

This is a principle of balance, not dietary, sleep or medical advice. For health concerns about food or sleep, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

A balanced daily rhythm of eating, moving, working and resting supports a clear mind. Peace grows out of ordinary, well-ordered days, not dramatic extremes.

Krishna gives the positive counterpart: yoga that destroys sorrow comes to one who is balanced in food, recreation, work, sleep and waking.

6.18 Krishna to Arjuna

yadā viniyataṃ cittamātmanyevāvatiṣṭhate | niḥspṛhaḥ sarvakāmebhyo yukta ityucyate tadā ||

When the well-controlled mind rests in the Self alone, free from longing for all desires, then one is called united (yukta).

Meaning today and context

A settled mind is one that no longer keeps running outward for something more. It rests where it is.

Krishna describes when a person is called 'united' in yoga.

6.19 Krishna to Arjuna

yathā dīpo nivātastho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā | yogino yatacittasya yuñjato yogamātmanaḥ ||

'As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker': that is the image remembered for the yogi of controlled mind who practises the yoga of the Self.

Meaning today and context

Picture a flame where no wind reaches. That steady, quiet brightness is what a collected mind feels like; it is a picture to return to whenever you sit.

Krishna gives the famous image of the lamp in a windless place.

6.20 Krishna to Arjuna

yatroparamate cittaṃ niruddhaṃ yogasevayā | yatra caivātmanātmānaṃ paśyannātmani tuṣyati ||

When the mind, restrained by the practice of yoga, comes to rest, and when, seeing the Self by the self, one is content in the Self,

Meaning today and context

There is a contentment that does not depend on anything outside. Practice slowly uncovers it.

Krishna begins describing the state reached in meditation (verses 20–23 form one sentence).

6.21 Krishna to Arjuna

sukhamātyantikaṃ yattadbuddhigrāhyamatīndriyam | vetti yatra na caivāyaṃ sthitaścalati tattvataḥ ||

when one knows that boundless happiness which is grasped by the understanding and lies beyond the senses, and established there, does not move from the truth,

Meaning today and context

Not all happiness comes through the senses. There is a quieter joy that understanding can touch, and once found it steadies you.

Krishna continues describing the joy found in meditation.

6.22 Krishna to Arjuna

yaṃ labdhvā cāparaṃ lābhaṃ manyate nādhikaṃ tataḥ | yasminsthito na duḥkhena guruṇāpi vicālyate ||

Having gained which, one thinks no other gain greater; established in which, one is not shaken even by heavy sorrow,

This describes an attained state, not a standard to judge anyone who is hurting. If you are grieving or in pain, your feelings are real and deserve care and support.

Meaning today and context

When you touch something truly worth having, the race for 'more' slows. And a deep inner footing helps you stay upright even when life hits hard.

Krishna continues: having gained this, one counts no other gain greater and is not shaken even by heavy sorrow.

6.23 Krishna to Arjuna

taṃ vidyādduḥkhasaṃyogaviyogaṃ yogasaṃjñitam | sa niścayena yoktavyo yogo'nirviṇṇacetasā ||

Let that be known as yoga: the disconnection from union with sorrow. This yoga should be practised with determination and an undiscouraged mind.

Meaning today and context

Yoga here means unhooking from suffering, not adding another chore. It asks for steady resolve and the refusal to give up when progress feels slow.

Krishna names this state yoga, the unhooking from sorrow, and urges practising it with determination and without discouragement.

6.24 Krishna to Arjuna

saṃkalpaprabhavānkāmāṃstyaktvā sarvānaśeṣataḥ | manasaivendriyagrāmaṃ viniyamya samantataḥ ||

Abandoning without remainder all desires born of sankalpa, and restraining the whole troop of senses on every side by the mind alone,

Meaning today and context

Desires start as thoughts we keep feeding. Noticing that, and gently using the mind's own discernment to rein in the senses, is where steadiness begins.

Krishna begins describing how to quieten the mind step by step (continued in 6.25).

6.25 Krishna to Arjuna

śanaiḥ śanairuparamedbuddhyā dhṛtigṛhītayā | ātmasaṃsthaṃ manaḥ kṛtvā na kiṃ cidapi cintayet ||

Little by little one should come to rest, by an understanding held firm with patience; making the mind abide in the Self, one should think of nothing else at all.

Go gently. 'Thinking of nothing' should never be forced; for some people, especially those with trauma or anxiety, emptying the mind can bring up distress. If it does, stop, ground yourself, and seek guidance from a teacher or clinician.

Meaning today and context

Calming the mind is gradual. Don't fight your thoughts or expect instant silence; patiently and steadily let the mind settle, a little more each time.

Krishna completes the instruction begun in 6.24: withdraw the mind slowly, with patient understanding.

6.26 Krishna to Arjuna

yato yato niścarati manaścañcalamasthiram | tatastato niyamyaitadātmanyeva vaśaṃ nayet ||

Wherever the restless, unsteady mind wanders off, from there one should draw it back and bring it under control in the Self alone.

Meaning today and context

The mind will wander; that is not failure. The practice is simply noticing and bringing it back, again and again, without scolding yourself.

Krishna gives the practical method for a wandering mind: bring it back each time it strays.

6.27 Krishna to Arjuna

praśāntamanasaṃ hyenaṃ yoginaṃ sukhamuttamam | upaiti śāntarajasaṃ brahmabhūtamakalmaṣam ||

Supreme happiness comes to this yogi whose mind is at peace, whose passion is stilled, who has become Brahman and is free from taint.

Meaning today and context

When restless passion settles, a deep happiness surfaces on its own. It is not something we have to chase.

Krishna describes the joy that comes to the yogi whose mind is calmed.

6.28 Krishna to Arjuna

yuñjannevaṃ sadātmānaṃ yogī vigatakalmaṣaḥ | sukhena brahmasaṃsparśamatyantaṃ sukhamaśnute ||

Thus constantly uniting himself, the yogi, freed from taint, easily attains the boundless happiness of contact with Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Steady practice eventually becomes effortless. What once felt like struggle turns into ease.

Krishna says the yogi who keeps practising this way easily reaches the boundless joy of contact with Brahman.

6.29 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvabhūtasthamātmānaṃ sarvabhūtāni cātmani | īkṣate yogayuktātmā sarvatra samadarśanaḥ ||

One whose self is united in yoga, who sees with an equal eye everywhere, sees the Self abiding in all beings and all beings in the Self.

Meaning today and context

The deeper you go within, the less separate others feel. Seeing yourself in others, and others in yourself, softens judgement and makes kindness natural.

Krishna describes the vision of the yogi: the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self.

6.30 Krishna to Arjuna

One who sees me everywhere and sees everything in me, I am not lost to him, and he is not lost to me.

Meaning today and context

For one who sees the sacred everywhere, it is never far away. That nearness is a quiet comfort, especially in lonely times.

Krishna says he is never lost to the one who sees him everywhere.

6.31 Krishna to Arjuna

sarvabhūtasthitaṃ yo māṃ bhajatyekatvamāsthitaḥ | sarvathā vartamāno'pi sa yogī mayi vartate ||

The one who, established in oneness, worships me as abiding in all beings, that yogi lives in me, whatever his way of life.

'Whatever his way of life' describes the inner freedom of one who truly sees all as one. It is not a licence for harmful conduct.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual life is not confined to particular places or routines. One who sees the divine in all can live it fully in any role.

Krishna says the one established in oneness who worships him in all beings abides in him, however he lives.

6.32 Krishna to Arjuna

ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṃ paśyati yo'rjuna | sukhaṃ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṃ sa yogī paramo mataḥ ||

One who, by the measure of his own self, sees equality everywhere, Arjuna, whether in pleasure or in pain, that yogi is considered the highest.

Meaning today and context

Others feel joy and hurt exactly as you do. Letting that sink in is the root of empathy and of not harming anyone.

Krishna names the highest yogi: one who, by comparison with himself, sees the pleasure and pain of all beings as equal.

6.33 Arjuna to Krishna

yo'yaṃ yogastvayā proktaḥ sāmyena madhusūdana | etasyāhaṃ na paśyāmi cañcalatvātsthitiṃ sthirām ||

Arjuna said: This yoga of evenness that you have taught, Madhusudana, I do not see how it can stand steady, because of restlessness.

Meaning today and context

Arjuna voices what many feel: the ideal sounds good, but my mind won't cooperate. Honest doubt like this is the beginning of real practice, not a reason to stop.

Arjuna objects: because the mind is so restless, he cannot see how this yoga of evenness could last.

6.34 Arjuna to Krishna

cañcalaṃ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavaddṛḍham | tasyāhaṃ nigrahaṃ manye vāyoriva suduṣkaram ||

For the mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, powerful and obstinate. To restrain it, I think, is as hard as restraining the wind.

A restless mind is common. But if racing, intrusive or distressing thoughts are persistent or overwhelming, they may need care beyond self-effort; please talk to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

If your mind feels impossible to control, you are in good company: Arjuna said the same. Naming the struggle honestly is the first step.

Arjuna describes the mind as restless, turbulent, strong and stubborn, as hard to hold as the wind.

6.35 Krishna to Arjuna

asaṃśayaṃ mahābāho mano durnigrahaṃ calam | abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate ||

The Blessed Lord said: Without doubt, mighty-armed one, the mind is hard to restrain and restless; but by practice, son of Kunti, and by dispassion, it is held.

Meaning today and context

Krishna doesn't deny the difficulty. He gives two tools: steady, repeated practice, and gradually loosening your hunger for what keeps pulling you away. Together they work, slowly.

Krishna agrees the mind is hard to restrain, and gives the answer: practice and dispassion.

6.36 Krishna to Arjuna

asaṃyatātmanā yogo duṣprāpa iti me matiḥ | vaśyātmanā tu yatatā śakyo'vāptumupāyataḥ ||

For one whose self is unrestrained, yoga is hard to reach; this is my view. But one whose self is under control, and who keeps striving, can attain it by the right means.

Meaning today and context

Progress is possible, but it needs both effort and method. Keep at it with the right approach rather than waiting to feel ready.

Krishna adds that yoga is hard for the uncontrolled, but attainable by one who keeps striving with the right means.

6.37 Arjuna to Krishna

ayatiḥ śraddhayopeto yogāccalitamānasaḥ | aprāpya yogasaṃsiddhiṃ kāṃ gatiṃ kṛṣṇa gacchati ||

Arjuna said: One who has faith but does not strive enough, whose mind has wandered from yoga, failing to reach perfection in yoga, what end does he reach, Krishna?

Meaning today and context

Many worry: what if I start and fail, or fall away? Arjuna asks this on behalf of every half-hearted beginner.

Arjuna asks what becomes of a person of faith who strays from yoga before reaching its goal.

6.38 Arjuna to Krishna

kaccinnobhayavibhraṣṭaśchinnābhramiva naśyati | apratiṣṭho mahābāho vimūḍho brahmaṇaḥ pathi ||

Fallen from both, does he not perish like a torn cloud, without support, mighty-armed one, bewildered on the path to Brahman?

Meaning today and context

The fear of ending up with neither the world nor the goal is real for many seekers. Arjuna gives it an image: a cloud torn loose, drifting away.

Arjuna presses his doubt with the image of a torn cloud.

6.39 Arjuna to Krishna

etanme saṃśayaṃ kṛṣṇa chettumarhasyaśeṣataḥ | tvadanyaḥ saṃśayasyāsya chettā na hyupapadyate ||

Krishna, you should dispel this doubt of mine completely; for no one other than you can be found to remove it.

Meaning today and context

Some doubts are best taken to someone you trust deeply. Asking for help when your mind is stuck is wisdom, not weakness.

Arjuna asks Krishna alone to resolve this doubt.

6.40 Krishna to Arjuna

pārtha naiveha nāmutra vināśastasya vidyate | na hi kalyāṇakṛtkaściddurgatiṃ tāta gacchati ||

The Blessed Lord said: Partha, neither here nor hereafter is there destruction for him; for no one who does good, my dear, ever goes to a bad end.

Meaning today and context

Sincere effort towards good is never wasted, even if you fall short or stop for a while. You can begin again from where you are.

Krishna reassures Arjuna: one who does good never comes to a bad end, in this world or the next.

6.41 Krishna to Arjuna

prāpya puṇyakṛtāṃllokānuṣitvā śāśvatīḥ samāḥ | śucīnāṃ śrīmatāṃ gehe yogabhraṣṭo'bhijāyate ||

Having reached the worlds of those who did good and dwelt there for countless years, the one who fell from yoga is born in the home of the pure and prosperous.

This speaks of rebirth, not of anyone's worth. Do not use it to judge people by the wealth or status of the family they were born into.

Meaning today and context

Within the Gita's view of rebirth, no sincere effort is lost; it carries forward into better conditions for growth.

Krishna describes the fate of one who fell from yoga: heavenly worlds, then birth in a good home.

6.42 Krishna to Arjuna

atha vā yogināmeva kule bhavati dhīmatām | etaddhi durlabhataraṃ loke janma yadīdṛśam ||

Or else he is born into a family of wise yogis; such a birth as this is indeed harder to gain in the world.

This speaks of rebirth, not of anyone's worth. Do not use it to judge people by the family they were born into.

Meaning today and context

Being surrounded by wise people who live what they value is a rare gift, rarer than wealth.

Krishna gives the alternative: birth in a family of wise yogis, which is rarer still.

6.43 Krishna to Arjuna

tatra taṃ buddhisaṃyogaṃ labhate paurvadehikam | yatate ca tato bhūyaḥ saṃsiddhau kurunandana ||

There he regains the union with understanding from his former body, and strives once more, joy of the Kurus, towards perfection.

Meaning today and context

Nothing you have truly learned is lost. When you return to a practice after a gap, you pick up from where you left off, not from zero.

Krishna says the one born again regains the understanding of the previous life and strives further.

6.44 Krishna to Arjuna

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hyavaśo'pi saḥ | jijñāsurapi yogasya śabdabrahmātivartate ||

By that very former practice he is carried on, even without his will. Even one who merely seeks to know yoga goes beyond the Vedic word.

Meaning today and context

Good habits and sincere practice build momentum that keeps working even when your will flags. Even genuine curiosity about the path counts.

Krishna says the force of past practice carries such a person onward, even against his will.

6.45 Krishna to Arjuna

prayatnādyatamānastu yogī saṃśuddhakilbiṣaḥ | anekajanmasaṃsiddhastato yāti parāṃ gatim ||

But the yogi who strives with diligence, cleansed of faults and perfected through many births, then reaches the supreme goal.

Meaning today and context

Deep change is usually cumulative, built bit by bit over a long time. Patience with yourself is part of the path.

Krishna says the yogi who strives earnestly, purified over many lives, reaches the supreme goal.

6.46 Krishna to Arjuna

tapasvibhyo'dhiko yogī jñānibhyo'pi mato'dhikaḥ | karmibhyaścādhiko yogī tasmādyogī bhavārjuna ||

The yogi is greater than ascetics; he is held greater even than men of knowledge, and greater than men of ritual action. Therefore be a yogi, Arjuna.

Meaning today and context

Hard austerity, bookish learning and correct ritual all have their place, but an inwardly united mind matters more than any of them.

Krishna declares the yogi greater than ascetics, scholars and ritualists, and urges Arjuna to be a yogi.

6.47 Krishna to Arjuna

yogināmapi sarveṣāṃ madgatenāntarātmanā | śraddhāvānbhajate yo māṃ sa me yuktatamo mataḥ ||

And of all yogis, the one who, full of faith, worships me with his inner self gone into me, him I consider the most united.

Meaning today and context

Technique matters, but the heart matters most. Practice offered with trust and love goes deepest.

Krishna closes chapter 6: among all yogis, the one who worships him with faith and with the inner self absorbed in him is the most united.
