Chapter 19 (Bhāgavata 11.24)

19.1 Krishna to Uddhava

atha te sampravakṣyāmi sāṅkhyaṃ pūrvairviniścitam | yadvijñāya pumānsadyo jahyādvaikalpikaṃ bhramam ||

Now I will explain to you Sāṅkhya, as the ancients settled it. Knowing it, a person at once gives up the delusion that comes from seeing things as divided.

Meaning today and context

Much of our confusion comes from seeing the world as a heap of separate, competing pieces. Understanding how it all hangs together can quiet that confusion.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): he announces the teaching and its purpose, to end the confusion that comes from seeing everything as divided.

19.2 Krishna to Uddhava

āsījjñānamatho artha ekamevāvikalpitam | yadā vivekanipuṇā ādau kṛtayuge'yuge ||

In the beginning, in the Kṛta age when people were skilled in discernment, and again at the end of the ages, there was knowledge and its object as one, undivided.

Meaning today and context

The teaching starts from oneness, not from division: the knower and what is known were never truly two. Separation is the later story, not the first truth.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): before creation, and again at dissolution, knower and known were one.

19.3 Krishna to Uddhava

tanmāyāphalarūpeṇa kevalaṃ nirvikalpitam | vāṅmano'gocaraṃ satyaṃ dvidhā samabhavadbṛhat ||

That vast reality, the truth, alone and undivided, beyond the reach of speech and mind, became twofold: as māyā and as that which experiences it.

Meaning today and context

What is most real cannot be captured in words or thoughts. The split into 'me' and 'the world' happens within that one reality, not outside it.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the one undivided reality, beyond speech and mind, became two.

19.4 Krishna to Uddhava

tayorekataro hyarthaḥ prakṛtiḥ sobhayātmikā | jñānaṃ tvanyatamo bhāvaḥ puruṣaḥ so'bhidhīyate ||

Of the two, one is the object: prakṛti, which has both natures [cause and effect]. The other, knowledge, is the being called puruṣa.

Meaning today and context

Sāṅkhya draws one basic line: what is seen and changes, and the awareness that sees. Learning to notice that difference is the start of inner steadiness.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): of the two, the object is prakṛti (nature), and knowledge is puruṣa (the conscious person).

19.5 Krishna to Uddhava

tamo rajaḥ sattvamiti prakṛterabhavanguṇāḥ | mayā prakṣobhyamāṇāyāḥ puruṣānumatena ca ||

Tamas, rajas and sattva: these guṇas arose from prakṛti when it was stirred by me, with the assent of puruṣa.

Meaning today and context

Everything in nature, including our own moods, is woven from three strands: dullness, restless drive and clarity. Knowing them helps us read ourselves.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the three guṇas arise from prakṛti when Krishna stirs it.

19.6 Krishna to Uddhava

tebhyaḥ samabhavatsūtraṃ mahānsūtreṇa saṃyutaḥ | tato vikurvato jāto yo'haṅkāro vimohanaḥ ||

From them arose the sūtra [the power of action]; joined with the sūtra came the mahat [the great principle]. From its transformation was born ahaṅkāra, the sense of 'I', which deludes.

Meaning today and context

The sense of 'I' is called the great deluder: it is a product of nature, not our deepest self. Seeing it as a product loosens its grip.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): from the guṇas come the principle of activity (sūtra), the great principle (mahat), and the ego (ahaṅkāra), which deludes.

19.7 Krishna to Uddhava

vaikārikastaijasaśca tāmasaścetyahaṃ trivṛt | tanmātrendriyamanasāṃ kāraṇaṃ cidacinmayaḥ ||

The ego is threefold: vaikārika [sattvic], taijasa [rajasic] and tāmasa. Made of both consciousness and matter, it is the cause of the subtle elements, the senses and the mind.

Meaning today and context

Our senses, our mind and the very objects we perceive all grow out of the sense of 'I'. The ego shapes not only what we feel but what we notice.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the ego is threefold and is the cause of the subtle elements, the senses and the mind.

19.8 Krishna to Uddhava

arthastanmātrikājjajñe tāmasādindriyāṇi ca | taijasāddevatā āsannekādaśa ca vaikṛtāt ||

From the tāmasa ego, through the subtle elements, the objects arose; from the taijasa, the senses; and from the vaikārika came the deities [of the senses] and the eleventh, the mind.

Meaning today and context

In this map, the world outside, the senses that meet it and the mind that interprets it all come from one source. They are not strangers to each other.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): what arises from each of the three kinds of ego.

19.9 Krishna to Uddhava

mayā sañcoditā bhāvāḥ sarve saṃhatyakāriṇaḥ | aṇḍamutpādayāmāsurmamāyatanamuttamam ||

Impelled by me, all these principles, working together, produced the egg, my supreme dwelling.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the principles combine to form the cosmic egg.

19.10 Krishna to Uddhava

tasminnahaṃ samabhavamaṇḍe salilasaṃsthitau | mama nābhyāmabhūtpadmaṃ viśvākhyaṃ tatra cātmabhūḥ ||

In that egg, resting on the waters, I came to be. From my navel arose a lotus called the universe, and on it the self-born [Brahmā].

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): Krishna appears in the egg on the waters; the lotus grows from his navel and Brahmā is born on it.

19.11 Krishna to Uddhava

so'sṛjattapasā yukto rajasā madanugrahāt | lokānsapālānviśvātmā bhūrbhuvaḥ svariti tridhā ||

He, the soul of the universe, filled with rajas, through austerity and by my grace, created the worlds with their guardians, in three divisions: bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ and svaḥ.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): Brahmā creates the three worlds.

19.12 Krishna to Uddhava

devānāmoka āsītsvarbhūtānāṃ ca bhuvaḥ padam | martyādīnāṃ ca bhūrlokaḥ siddhānāṃ tritayātparam ||

Svar became the home of the gods, bhuvaḥ the place of spirits, and bhūḥ the world of mortals and other beings. Beyond these three is the place of the siddhas.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): who lives in each of the three worlds.

19.13 Krishna to Uddhava

adho'surāṇāṃ nāgānāṃ bhūmeroko'sṛjatprabhuḥ | trilokyāṃ gatayaḥ sarvāḥ karmaṇāṃ triguṇātmanām ||

Below the earth the Lord made the abode of the asuras and nāgas. Within the three worlds lie all the destinations of actions made of the three guṇas.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the lower worlds, and the three worlds as the destinations of action.

19.14 Krishna to Uddhava

yogasya tapasaścaiva nyāsasya gatayo'malāḥ | maharjanastapaḥ satyaṃ bhaktiyogasya madgatiḥ ||

The pure destinations of yoga, austerity and renunciation are Mahar, Jana, Tapas and Satya; the destination of bhakti-yoga is I myself.

Meaning today and context

Discipline can lift us to better states, but every state is still a place one can fall from. Love of God aims not at a better place but at God.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the higher worlds are reached by yoga, austerity and renunciation, but devotion leads to Krishna himself.

19.15 Krishna to Uddhava

mayā kālātmanā dhātrā karmayuktamidaṃ jagat | guṇapravāha etasminnunmajjati nimajjati ||

By me, as Time, the ordainer, this world is bound to action. In this stream of the guṇas it rises and sinks.

Meaning today and context

Ups and downs are the nature of a world carried along by time and changing moods. Expecting a life of only rising is expecting the river to stop.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the world, bound to action, rises and sinks in the stream of the guṇas under Time.

19.16 Krishna to Uddhava

aṇurbṛhatkṛśaḥ sthūlo yo yo bhāvaḥ prasidhyati | sarvo'pyubhayasaṃyuktaḥ prakṛtyā puruṣeṇa ca ||

Whatever comes into being, minute or vast, thin or gross, all of it is joined with both: prakṛti and puruṣa.

Meaning today and context

Nothing is merely dead matter; awareness is present in every thing. That can change how we treat even the smallest of beings.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): everything that exists is made of both nature and consciousness.

19.17 Krishna to Uddhava

yastu yasyādirantaśca sa vai madhyaṃ ca tasya san | vikāro vyavahārārtho yathā taijasapārthivāḥ ||

That which is the beginning and the end of a thing is also its middle, being what is real. The modification exists for everyday dealing, like things made of gold or of clay.

Meaning today and context

A bangle and a necklace are different names for the same gold. Our roles, shapes and labels change; what we are made of does not.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): what a thing begins and ends as is also what it truly is in between, like gold in ornaments.

19.18 Krishna to Uddhava

yadupādāya pūrvastu bhāvo vikurute'param | ādiranto yadā yasya tatsatyamabhidhīyate ||

That which a former thing takes as its material when it changes into the next, and which is the beginning and end of it, that is called the real.

Meaning today and context

What is real in us is what remains through childhood, youth and age, through success and loss. Looking for that thread is looking for oneself.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the definition of the real: the material that persists from beginning to end through every change.

19.19 Krishna to Uddhava

prakṛtiryasyopādānamādhāraḥ puruṣaḥ paraḥ | sato'bhivyañjakaḥ kālo brahma tattritayaṃ tvaham ||

Prakṛti is its material cause, the supreme Puruṣa its support, and Time what makes it manifest. This triad, Brahman, am I.

Meaning today and context

Matter, awareness and time are not three rival powers but faces of one reality. For the devotee, that reality has a face: Krishna.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): material cause, support and Time together are Brahman, and that is Krishna.

19.20 Krishna to Uddhava

sargaḥ pravartate tāvatpaurvāparyeṇa nityaśaḥ | mahānguṇavisargārthaḥ sthityanto yāvadīkṣaṇam ||

Creation goes on continually, one thing after another, its great flow serving the unfolding of the guṇas, until the end of its maintenance, as long as [my] gaze lasts.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): creation continues in sequence for as long as the Lord's gaze sustains it.

19.21 Krishna to Uddhava

virāṇmayāsādyamāno lokakalpavikalpakaḥ | pañcatvāya viśeṣāya kalpate bhuvanaiḥ saha ||

The cosmic form [Virāṭ], in which worlds are formed and unformed, when overtaken by me, becomes fit for dissolution into the five elements, along with all the worlds.

Meaning today and context

Part of Krishna's account of how the world unfolds from the one reality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): dissolution begins: the cosmic form, overtaken by Krishna as Time, breaks up into its elements.

19.22 Krishna to Uddhava

anne pralīyate martyamannaṃ dhānāsu līyate | dhānā bhūmau pralīyante bhūmirgandhe pralīyate ||

The mortal body dissolves into food, food into grain, grain into the earth, and the earth into smell.

This describes the cosmic order of dissolution, not an invitation to think about dying. If death is on your mind or you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The body is borrowed from food and the earth and returns to them. Seeing this calmly is part of a mature view of our own mortality.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the order of dissolution, the reverse of creation, begins with the body.

19.23 Krishna to Uddhava

apsu pralīyate gandha āpaśca svaguṇe rase | līyate jyotiṣi raso jyotī rūpe pralīyate ||

Smell dissolves into water, and water into its own quality, taste. Taste dissolves into fire, and fire into form.

Meaning today and context

Each solid thing is traced back to something subtler. This reverse tracing is used as a contemplation to loosen the hold of the gross world on the mind.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): dissolution continues through water and fire.

19.24 Krishna to Uddhava

rūpaṃ vāyau sa ca sparśe līyate so'pi cāmbare | ambaraṃ śabdatanmātra indriyāṇi svayoniṣu ||

Form dissolves into air, air into touch, touch into space; space into the subtle element of sound; and the senses into their own sources.

Meaning today and context

Even the senses, which seem to be our window on everything, are themselves effects that return to their cause. We are more than the senses.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): dissolution continues through air and space; the senses return to their sources.

19.25 Krishna to Uddhava

yonirvaikārike saumya līyate manasīśvare | śabdo bhūtādimapyeti bhūtādirmahati prabhuḥ ||

Their sources, gentle one, dissolve into the vaikārika [ego], the mind, their ruler. Sound goes into the elemental ego, and that powerful ego into the mahat.

Meaning today and context

The mind is called the ruler of the senses: when the mind settles, the senses settle with it.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the sense-deities, sound and the elemental ego dissolve into higher principles.

19.26 Krishna to Uddhava

That mahat, the foremost of the products of the guṇas, dissolves into its own guṇas; they dissolve into the unmanifest; that into Time; and Time into the Imperishable.

Even time, which seems to swallow everything, rests in something that does not pass. That is the ground the teaching points to.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): mahat dissolves into the guṇas, they into the unmanifest, that into Time, and Time into the imperishable.

19.27 Krishna to Uddhava

kālo māyāmaye jīve jīva ātmani mayyaje | ātmā kevala ātmastho vikalpāpāyalakṣaṇaḥ ||

Time dissolves into the jīva made of māyā, and the jīva into me, the unborn Self. The Self, alone, abides in itself, marked by the vanishing of all division.

Meaning today and context

At the end of the inquiry there is only the Self, resting in itself, with nothing to compare or divide. That stillness is the goal of this contemplation.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): the last steps of dissolution: Time into the individual soul, the soul into Krishna, the Self abiding alone.

19.28 Krishna to Uddhava

evamanvīkṣamāṇasya kathaṃ vaikalpiko bhramaḥ | manaso hṛdi tiṣṭheta vyomnīvārkodaye tamaḥ ||

For one who reflects in this way, how could the delusion of division remain in the heart? It would be like darkness lingering in the sky when the sun rises.

Meaning today and context

Confusion does not have to be fought piece by piece; it fades when understanding dawns. Patient reflection, done again and again, brings that dawn.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): for one who contemplates this, the delusion of division cannot stay, as darkness cannot stay at sunrise.

19.29 Krishna to Uddhava

eṣa sāṅkhyavidhiḥ proktaḥ saṃśayagranthibhedanaḥ | pratilomānulomābhyāṃ parāvaradṛśa mayā ||

This method of Sāṅkhya, which cuts the knot of doubt, has been told by me, who see the higher and the lower, in both the reverse and the forward order.

Meaning today and context

Doubt is a knot, and some knots loosen only when we see the whole pattern. Understanding how things arise and dissolve can settle doubts that argument cannot.

Krishna teaches Uddhava Sāṅkhya (Bhāgavata 11.24): Krishna closes the Sāṅkhya teaching: by tracing creation forward and back, it cuts the knot of doubt.
