Chapter 20 (Bhāgavata 11.25)

20.1 Krishna to Uddhava

guṇānāmasammiśrāṇāṃ pumānyena yathā bhavet | tanme puruṣavaryedamupadhāraya śaṃsataḥ ||

Best of men, listen as I tell you how a person becomes [what he is] through each of the guṇas, taken unmixed.

Meaning today and context

Before judging ourselves or others, it helps to know the forces that shape character. Krishna offers a way to look at people through their qualities.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): he introduces how each guṇa, on its own, shapes a person.

20.2 Krishna to Uddhava

śamo damastitikṣekṣā tapaḥ satyaṃ dayā smṛtiḥ | tuṣṭistyāgo'spṛhā śraddhā hrīrdayādiḥ svanirvṛtiḥ ||

Calm, self-restraint, endurance, reflection, austerity, truthfulness, compassion, mindfulness, contentment, generosity, freedom from craving, faith, a sense of shame at wrongdoing, kindness and the like, and joy in oneself: [these are of sattva].

Meaning today and context

This is a practical checklist of a clear, healthy mind: calm, honest, kind, content, and happy from within. We can use it to notice which of these we are growing.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the qualities that come from sattva.

20.3 Krishna to Uddhava

kāma īhā madastṛṣṇā stambha āśīrbhidā sukham | madotsāho yaśaḥprītirhāsyaṃ vīryaṃ balodyamaḥ ||

Desire, constant striving, pride, thirst, stubbornness, praying for favours, a sense of separateness, sensual pleasure, eagerness born of pride, love of fame, mockery, show of valour, and forceful effort: [these are of rajas].

Meaning today and context

Rajas is the driven, restless, image-conscious mind: always wanting, proving and competing. Energy itself is not bad, but when it runs us, we lose peace.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the qualities that come from rajas.

20.4 Krishna to Uddhava

krodho lobho'nṛtaṃ hiṃsā yācñā dambhaḥ klamaḥ kaliḥ | śokamohau viṣādārtī nidrāśā bhīranudyamaḥ ||

Anger, greed, falsehood, violence, begging, hypocrisy, weariness, quarrelling, grief and delusion, dejection and distress, sleep, false hope, fear and inertia: [these are of tamas].

Grief, dejection, fear and weariness here are described as states of mind, not as personal failings. If they are heavy and persistent, it may be depression, which is treatable; please talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

These are states that drag the mind down. Naming them as passing conditions, not as who we are, is the first step toward moving out of them.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the qualities that come from tamas.

20.5 Krishna to Uddhava

sattvasya rajasaścaitāstamasaścānupūrvaśaḥ | vṛttayo varṇitaprāyāḥ sannipātamatho śṛṇu ||

These, in order, are the modes of sattva, rajas and tamas, described for the most part. Now hear about their mixture.

Meaning today and context

No one is purely one type. Real people are mixtures, and the mixture shifts from hour to hour.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): after listing the qualities of each guṇa, he turns to how they mix.

20.6 Krishna to Uddhava

sannipātastvahamiti mametyuddhava yā matiḥ | vyavahāraḥ sannipāto manomātrendriyāsubhiḥ ||

The mixture, Uddhava, is the notion of 'I' and 'mine'. All dealings carried on through the mind, the objects, the senses and the life-breaths are the mixture too.

Meaning today and context

The everyday sense of 'me and mine' is itself made of the guṇas. Seeing that can make us hold our claims on people and things more lightly.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the mixture of guṇas shows as 'I' and 'mine' and in all ordinary dealings.

20.7 Krishna to Uddhava

dharme cārthe ca kāme ca yadāsau pariniṣṭhitaḥ | guṇānāṃ sannikarṣo'yaṃ śraddhāratidhanāvahaḥ ||

When a person is devoted to dharma, wealth and pleasure, this combination of the guṇas brings faith, enjoyment and prosperity.

Meaning today and context

An ordinary good life of duty, earning and enjoyment is a blend of the guṇas, and it bears real fruit: faith, joy and wealth. It is not condemned, only placed.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): when a person is devoted to dharma, wealth and pleasure, the guṇas are working together.

20.8 Krishna to Uddhava

pravṛttilakṣaṇe niṣṭhā pumānyarhi gṛhāśrame | svadharme cānu tiṣṭheta guṇānāṃ samitirhi sā ||

When a person is committed to the life of action, as a householder, and then keeps to his own dharma, that too is a meeting of the guṇas.

One's 'own dharma' here means one's role and responsibilities, never a duty fixed by caste or birth.

Meaning today and context

Family life lived responsibly is a full and valid path, made of all three strands of nature. Doing one's own duties well is part of it.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the householder devoted to active life and his own duty shows the guṇas combined.

20.9 Krishna to Uddhava

puruṣaṃ sattvasaṃyuktamanumīyācchamādibhiḥ | kāmādibhī rajoyuktaṃ krodhādyaistamasā yutam ||

One should infer that a person is joined with sattva from calm and the like, with rajas from desire and the like, and with tamas from anger and the like.

This is for looking at oneself, not for labelling or judging others.

Meaning today and context

We know the guṇas by their signs. Watching our own calm, wanting and anger tells us which force is running us right now.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): how to recognise which guṇa is dominant in a person.

20.10 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā bhajati māṃ bhaktyā nirapekṣaḥ svakarmabhiḥ | taṃ sattvaprakṛtiṃ vidyātpuruṣaṃ striyameva vā ||

When someone worships me with devotion through their own work, seeking nothing in return, know that person, man or woman, to be of sattvic nature.

Meaning today and context

Devotion is clearest when it asks for nothing. Doing one's daily work as an offering, without bargaining with God, is open to every person.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): worship without expecting anything in return is sattvic, whether by a man or a woman.

20.11 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā āśiṣa āśāsya māṃ bhajeta svakarmabhiḥ | taṃ rajaḥprakṛtiṃ vidyāthiṃsāmāśāsya tāmasam ||

When one worships me through one's work hoping for blessings, know him to be rajasic; when hoping for harm [to others], tamasic.

Meaning today and context

Why we pray matters as much as that we pray. Asking for help is human; praying for someone else's ruin poisons devotion itself.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): worship for favours is rajasic; worship hoping to harm others is tamasic.

20.12 Krishna to Uddhava

sattvaṃ rajastama iti guṇā jīvasya naiva me | cittajā yaistu bhūtānāṃ sajjamāno nibadhyate ||

Sattva, rajas and tamas: these guṇas belong to the jīva, not at all to me. They are born of the mind, and beings who cling to them are bound.

Meaning today and context

Our moods and tendencies arise in the mind; they are not our deepest nature. Bondage comes from clinging to them and taking them as 'me'.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the guṇas belong to the individual's mind, not to God; clinging to them binds.

20.13 Krishna to Uddhava

yadetarau jayetsattvaṃ bhāsvaraṃ viśadaṃ śivam | tadā sukhena yujyeta dharmajñānādibhiḥ pumān ||

When sattva, bright, clear and benign, overcomes the other two, then a person is joined with happiness, dharma, knowledge and the like.

Meaning today and context

When clarity has the upper hand, happiness, good conduct and understanding come naturally. Strengthening clarity is worth more than chasing happiness directly.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): when sattva prevails over the other two, a person gains happiness, virtue and knowledge.

20.14 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā jayettamaḥ sattvaṃ rajaḥ saṅgaṃ bhidā calam | tadā duḥkhena yujyeta karmaṇā yaśasā śriyā ||

When rajas, which is attachment, division and restlessness, overcomes tamas and sattva, then a person is joined with suffering, with action, fame and fortune.

Meaning today and context

Drive brings achievements, recognition and money, and with them stress and pain. Success won through restless craving rarely brings rest.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): when rajas prevails, a person gains action, fame and fortune, but with suffering.

20.15 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā jayedrajaḥ sattvaṃ tamo mūḍhaṃ layaṃ jaḍam | yujyeta śokamohābhyāṃ nidrayā hiṃsayāśayā ||

When tamas, dull, sunk and inert, overcomes rajas and sattva, a person is joined with grief and delusion, with sleep, with violence and with false hope.

Feeling low, sleeping too much and losing hope can be signs of depression, which is an illness, not a moral failing. Please reach out to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Heaviness of mind feeds grief, confusion, oversleeping and even cruelty. Recognising this pull is the first step to stepping, gently, toward light and activity.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): when tamas prevails, a person sinks into grief, delusion, sleep, violence and false hope.

20.16 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā cittaṃ prasīdeta indriyāṇāṃ ca nirvṛtiḥ | dehe'bhayaṃ mano'saṅgaṃ tatsattvaṃ viddhi matpadam ||

When the mind is clear and the senses at rest, the body without fear and the mind unattached, know that to be sattva, the way to me.

Meaning today and context

A settled mind, quiet senses, a body at ease and a heart that doesn't cling: this is what inner clarity feels like, and it is a doorway to the divine.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the inner signs of sattva.

20.17 Krishna to Uddhava

vikurvankriyayā cādhīranivṛttiśca cetasām | gātrāsvāsthyaṃ mano bhrāntaṃ raja etairniśāmaya ||

Being driven by activity, an unsettled intellect, the senses that never let up, the body ill at ease, the mind restless and confused: know rajas by these.

Physical unease and racing thoughts can also have medical causes; this verse is not a diagnosis.

Meaning today and context

Constant busyness, a mind that won't settle, senses always hungry, a body that can't relax: these are signs of being over-driven. Noticing them is the start of slowing down.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the inner signs of rajas.

20.18 Krishna to Uddhava

sīdaccittaṃ vilīyeta cetaso grahaṇe'kṣamam | mano naṣṭaṃ tamo glānistamastadupadhāraya ||

The mind sinks and dissolves, unable to hold onto anything; the mind is lost; there is darkness and dejection: know that to be tamas.

A mind that sinks, can't focus and feels dark and dejected can be a sign of depression, which is an illness and treatable, not a spiritual failing. Please see a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A mind that sinks, can't focus and feels dark is under heaviness. It is a state that passes, not who we are, and it is helped by care, rest, movement and support.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): the inner signs of tamas.

20.19 Krishna to Uddhava

edhamāne guṇe sattve devānāṃ balamedhate | asurāṇāṃ ca rajasi tamasyuddhava rakṣasām ||

When the guṇa sattva grows, the strength of the gods grows; when rajas grows, that of the asuras; and when tamas grows, Uddhava, that of the rākṣasas.

Meaning today and context

Read inwardly, our better and worse impulses gain strength from whichever quality we feed. What we nourish in ourselves is what grows.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): as each guṇa grows, the power of gods, asuras or rākṣasas grows.

20.20 Krishna to Uddhava

sattvājjāgaraṇaṃ vidyādrajasā svapnamādiśet | prasvāpaṃ tamasā jantosturīyaṃ triṣu santatam ||

Know waking to come from sattva, dreaming from rajas and deep sleep from tamas; the fourth [turīya] runs through all three.

Meaning today and context

Beneath waking, dreaming and sleeping there is an awareness that does not come and go. That steady presence is what we are pointed toward.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): waking, dreaming and deep sleep correspond to the guṇas; the fourth state runs through all three.

20.21 Krishna to Uddhava

uparyupari gacchanti sattvena brāhmaṇā janāḥ | tamasādho'dha āmukhyādrajasāntaracāriṇaḥ ||

Through sattva, brāhmaṇa-like people rise higher and higher; through tamas, people sink lower and lower, down to the immobile beings; through rajas, they move in between.

'Brāhmaṇa' here names people of sattvic character, not a birth group. Never use this verse to rank or exclude anyone by caste or birth.

Meaning today and context

The direction of a life follows the qualities we cultivate. Clarity lifts, restlessness keeps us circling, dullness pulls us down.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): sattva lifts people higher, rajas keeps them in the middle, tamas drags them down.

20.22 Krishna to Uddhava

sattve pralīnāḥ svaryānti naralokaṃ rajolayāḥ | tamolayāstu nirayaṃ yānti māmeva nirguṇāḥ ||

Those who die absorbed in sattva go to heaven, those absorbed in rajas to the human world, and those absorbed in tamas to hell; but those beyond the guṇas come to me.

This speaks of the soul's path, not a judgement on anyone who has died. If you are grieving or thinking about death, please talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Even heaven is still within the play of qualities. The deepest freedom lies not in a better destination but in going beyond the pull of the guṇas.

Krishna teaches Uddhava about the three guṇas (Bhāgavata 11.25): where people go after death according to the guṇa they die in; those beyond the guṇas come to Krishna.

20.23 Krishna to Uddhava
