Chapter 21 (Bhāgavata 11.26)

21.1 Krishna to Uddhava

mallakṣaṇamimaṃ kāyaṃ labdhvā maddharma āsthitaḥ | ānandaṃ paramātmānamātmasthaṃ samupaiti mām ||

Having gained this human body, in which I can be realised, and standing firm in my dharma, one reaches me: bliss, the supreme Self, dwelling within oneself.

Meaning today and context

A human life is a real opportunity, and what is sought is not far away; it is within. A life of steady practice is the way to it.

Krishna, continuing his teaching to Uddhava, says that one who has gained this human body and follows his dharma reaches him, the Self of bliss.

21.2 Krishna to Uddhava

guṇamayyā jīvayonyā vimukto jñānaniṣṭhayā | guṇeṣu māyāmātreṣu dṛśyamāneṣvavastutaḥ | vartamāno'pi na pumānyujyate'vastubhirguṇaiḥ ||

Freed by steadfastness in knowledge from the guna-made source of individual existence, a person is not bound by the gunas, though he still lives among them; for the gunas, seen as they are, are only maya and not ultimately real.

Meaning today and context

You can live fully in the world of moods, pressures and changing circumstances without being owned by them, once you see them for what they are: passing.

Krishna says that one freed by steady knowledge from the guna-made condition of individual existence is not bound by the gunas, even while living among them.

21.3 Krishna to Uddhava

saṅgaṃ na kuryādasatāṃ śiśnodaratṛpāṃ kvacit | tasyānugastamasyandhe patatyandhānugāndhavat ||

Never keep company with the untrue, who live only to gratify sex and the stomach. One who follows such a person falls into blind darkness, like a blind man following the blind.

Choosing better company is not a licence to look down on or shun people; it is about where you let yourself be led.

Meaning today and context

The people we spend time with shape where we end up. If your circle lives only for indulgence, following them leads you nowhere good.

Krishna warns Uddhava against keeping company with people who live only to satisfy lust and the belly.

21.4 Krishna to Uddhava

ailaḥ samrāḍimāṃ gāthāmagāyata bṛhacchravāḥ | urvaśīvirahānmuhyannirviṇṇaḥ śokasaṃyame ||

The emperor Aila (Pururavas), of great fame, sang this song when, bewildered by separation from Urvashi, he became disenchanted and was restraining his grief.

Meaning today and context

The lesson that follows comes out of heartbreak. Loss can be the moment a person begins to see clearly.

Krishna introduces the story: the emperor Pururavas, son of Ila, sang this song when, after the grief of separation from Urvashi, he grew disenchanted.

21.5 Krishna to Uddhava

tyaktvātmānaṃ vrajantīṃ tāṃ nagna unmattavannṛpaḥ | vilapannanvagājjāye ghore tiṣṭheti viklavaḥ ||

When she left him and went away, the king, naked and like a madman, followed her weeping, 'O wife, cruel one, stay!', utterly distraught.

Story verse. If someone is distraught after a breakup, acknowledge their pain first; this is not mockery of heartbreak.

Meaning today and context

Desperate clinging can strip a person of all dignity. The story shows this honestly before it shows the way out.

Krishna describes Pururavas, abandoned by Urvashi, running after her in despair.

21.6 Krishna to Uddhava

kāmānatṛpto'nujuṣankṣullakānvarṣayāminīḥ | na veda yāntīrnāyāntīrurvaśyākṛṣṭacetanaḥ ||

Unsatisfied, indulging in petty pleasures through the nights of many years, his mind drawn away by Urvashi, he did not notice them coming or going.

Meaning today and context

Craving can quietly eat up years. You look up and realise time has gone by without your noticing.

Krishna says Pururavas spent years with Urvashi, never satisfied, his mind so captured that he did not notice the nights of years passing.

21.7 Pururavas

aho me mohavistāraḥ kāmakaśmalacetasaḥ | devyā gṛhītakaṇṭhasya nāyuḥkhaṇḍā ime smṛtāḥ ||

Ah, how vast my delusion, my mind fouled by desire! Held by the throat by that goddess, I did not even count these portions of my life slipping away.

Meaning today and context

Waking up to how much of your life an obsession has taken is painful, but it is the first step out of it.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). Waking from his infatuation, he cries out at how far his delusion had spread.

21.8 Pururavas

nāhaṃ vedābhinirmuktaḥ sūryo vābhyudito'muyā | mūṣito varṣapūgānāṃ batāhāni gatānyuta ||

Robbed by her, I did not know whether the sun had set or risen. Alas, whole days of many years have gone by!

Meaning today and context

When we are absorbed in craving, ordinary life, sunrise and sunset, family, work, fades from view. Noticing time again is part of coming back.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He says he did not even know when the sun set or rose; years of days were stolen from him.

21.9 Pururavas

aho me ātmasammoho yenātmā yoṣitāṃ kṛtaḥ | krīḍāmṛgaścakravartī naradevaśikhāmaṇiḥ ||

Ah, my self-delusion! I, an emperor, the crest-jewel of kings, made myself a pet animal for women to play with.

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Rank and power do not protect anyone from being ruled by craving. Self-mastery is a different kind of strength.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He marvels that he, an emperor, made himself a plaything.

21.10 Pururavas

saparicchadamātmānaṃ hitvā tṛṇamiveśvaram | yāntīṃ striyaṃ cānvagamaṃ nagna unmattavadrudan ||

Casting aside like a blade of grass myself, a lord with all my retinue, I followed the woman as she went, naked, weeping like a madman.

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

He sees how much he gave up for a craving: his dignity, his role, his responsibilities.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He recalls throwing away his kingdom like straw to chase her.

21.11 Pururavas

kutastasyānubhāvaḥ syātteja īśatvameva vā | yo'nvagacchaṃ striyaṃ yāntīṃ kharavatpādatāḍitaḥ ||

Where is the dignity, the splendour or the lordship of one like me, who followed a departing woman like a donkey kicked by her hooves?

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women. Self-reproach here is a story moment; for anyone sunk in shame, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is self-reproach in the heat of disillusion; the real lesson comes in the verses that follow.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He asks what dignity is left to a man like him.

21.12 Pururavas

kiṃ vidyayā kiṃ tapasā kiṃ tyāgena śrutena vā | kiṃ viviktena maunena strībhiryasya mano hṛtam ||

What use is learning, what use austerity, renunciation or scripture, what use solitude or silence, for one whose mind has been stolen away by women?

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge and discipline mean little if one craving still runs your mind. Real progress is measured by inner freedom, not by learning or practices.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He asks what use learning and austerity are if the mind has been carried off by craving.

21.13 Pururavas

svārthasyākovidaṃ dhiṅmāṃ mūrkhaṃ paṇḍitamāninam | yo'hamīśvaratāṃ prāpya strībhirgokharavajjitaḥ ||

Shame on me, ignorant of my own true good, a fool who thought himself learned: having gained lordship, I was conquered by women like an ox or a donkey.

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women. Self-condemnation is not the goal; for anyone in deep shame, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Thinking yourself clever is no protection; the honest admission of having been foolish is often where wisdom starts.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He curses himself as a fool who thought himself wise.

21.14 Pururavas

sevato varṣapūgānme urvaśyā adharāsavam | na tṛpyatyātmabhūḥ kāmo vahnirāhutibhiryathā ||

Though I drank the wine of Urvashi's lips for many years, desire, born in the mind, is never satisfied, just as fire is not satisfied by offerings of ghee.

Meaning today and context

Feeding a craving does not end it; it makes it burn brighter. Contentment comes from a different direction than more.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He sees that desire is never satisfied by being fed.

21.15 Pururavas

puṃścalyāpahṛtaṃ cittaṃ ko nvanyo mocituṃ prabhuḥ | ātmārāmeśvaramṛte bhagavantamadhokṣajam ||

Who else could free a mind stolen away by a wanton woman, except the Lord, Adhokshaja, master of those who delight in the Self?

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women. For addiction, turning to God can go alongside proper treatment, not replace it.

Meaning today and context

When a craving feels stronger than willpower, the text points to turning towards God and the Self as the way out, not more self-effort alone.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He says only the Lord, content in himself, can free a mind carried away by passion.

21.16 Pururavas

bodhitasyāpi devyā me sūktavākyena durmateḥ | manogato mahāmoho nāpayātyajitātmanaḥ ||

Even though the goddess herself counselled me with well-spoken words, the great delusion lodged in my mind did not leave me, a fool whose mind was unconquered.

Meaning today and context

Good advice is not enough while the mind is unconquered. Change happens when something shifts inside, not only when we are told.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He admits that even Urvashi's own wise words could not free him.

21.17 Pururavas

kimetayā no'pakṛtaṃ rajjvā vā sarpacetasaḥ | draṣṭuḥ svarūpāviduṣo yo'haṃ yadajitendriyaḥ ||

What wrong has she done me, any more than a rope does to one who takes it for a snake? It is I, ignorant of the seer's true nature, who did not master my senses.

Owning one's part does not mean excusing real harm. If someone abused or endangered you, that was not your fault; seek help (112 / 181).

Meaning today and context

Instead of blaming the person who left, he looks at his own part. Much of our suffering comes from what we projected onto someone, not from what they did.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He realises Urvashi did him no wrong; the fault was his own unmastered senses and ignorance of his true nature.

21.18 Pururavas

kvāyaṃ malīmasaḥ kāyo daurgandhyādyātmako'śuciḥ | kva guṇāḥ saumanasyādyā hyadhyāso'vidyayā kṛtaḥ ||

Where is this filthy body, made of foul smells and impurity, and where the fine qualities, charm and the rest, that we see in it? It is a superimposition made by ignorance.

The body-as-impure imagery is about loosening identification and infatuation, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Infatuation paints a person with qualities that are really in our own mind. Seeing that can loosen an obsession without contempt for anyone.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He contrasts the body, made of impure stuff, with the fine qualities he had imagined in it, and calls the confusion a superimposition born of ignorance.

21.19 Pururavas

pitroḥ kiṃ svaṃ nu bhāryāyāḥ svāmino'gneḥ śvagṛdhrayoḥ | kimātmanaḥ kiṃ suhṛdāmiti yo nāvasīyate ||

Does it belong to the parents, to the wife, to the master, to the fire, to dogs and vultures? To oneself, or to one's friends? This can never be settled.

This is about identity, not neglect: caring for one's body and health remains a duty.

Meaning today and context

The body is claimed by many and owned by none; holding it lightly frees us from making it the whole of who we are.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He asks to whom the body really belongs, since so many claim it.

21.20 Pururavas

tasminkalevare'medhye tucchaniṣṭhe viṣajjate | aho subhadraṃ sunasaṃ susmitaṃ ca mukhaṃ striyaḥ ||

Yet one clings to that unclean body, whose end is worthless, exclaiming, 'Ah, what a lovely face she has, what a fine nose, what a sweet smile!'

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women. The body-as-impure imagery is about loosening identification and infatuation, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Pururavas is mocking his own infatuation with surfaces.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He wonders how a person becomes attached to a body that ends in nothing, exclaiming over a woman's face.

21.21 Pururavas

tvaṅmāṃsarudhirasnāyu medomajjāsthisaṃhatau | viṇmūtrapūye ramatāṃ kṛmīṇāṃ kiyadantaram ||

In a bundle of skin, flesh, blood, sinew, fat, marrow and bone, full of excrement, urine and pus, how much difference is there between those who take delight in it and worms?

The body-as-impure imagery is about loosening identification and infatuation, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; Tele-MANAS 14416. This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

A deliberately harsh image from a renunciate's self-correction, meant to break his own infatuation.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He describes the body as a heap of skin, flesh and fluids, and those who delight in it as no better than worms.

21.22 Pururavas

athāpi nopasajjeta strīṣu straiṇeṣu cārthavit | viṣayendriyasaṃyogānmanaḥ kṣubhyati nānyathā ||

Even so, one who knows his true good should not become attached to women or to those attached to women; the mind is stirred only through contact of the senses with their objects, and not otherwise.

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Agitation usually starts with what we feed our senses. Being careful about inputs, what we watch, scroll and dwell on, is practical self-care for the mind.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He concludes that a discerning person should not be attached, because the mind is disturbed only by contact of the senses with their objects.

21.23 Pururavas

adṛṣṭādaśrutādbhāvānna bhāva upajāyate | asamprayuñjataḥ prāṇānśāmyati stimitaṃ manaḥ ||

From a thing not seen or heard, no feeling arises. In one who does not engage his senses, the mind grows still and is at peace.

Withdrawing the senses here means restraint, not isolation or cutting off people; not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Many cravings and anxieties are fed by constant input. Giving the senses rest, less scrolling, fewer triggers, lets the mind settle on its own.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He observes that what has not been seen or heard does not arise in the mind, and the mind grows still when the senses are not engaged.

21.24 Pururavas

tasmātsaṅgo na kartavyaḥ strīṣu straiṇeṣu cendriyaiḥ | viduṣāṃ cāpyavisrabdhaḥ ṣaḍvargaḥ kimu mādṛśām ||

Therefore one should not let the senses form attachment to women or to those attached to women. Even for the wise the six inner enemies are not to be trusted; how much less for people like me?

This is Pururavas blaming his own craving, in the renunciate idiom of its time. It is about one's own attachment and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Even experienced, wise people do well not to overestimate their self-control.

Krishna tells Uddhava the song of King Pururavas (Aila). He concludes that the senses should not be allowed to attach to women or to the womanising, since even the wise cannot trust the six enemies within.

21.25 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ pragāyannṛpadevadevaḥ sa urvaśīlokamatho vihāya | ātmānamātmanyavagamya māṃ vai upāramajjñānavidhūtamohaḥ ||

Singing thus, that god among kings and gods gave up Urvashi's world, and realising me as the Self within himself, became tranquil, his delusion shaken off by knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Heartbreak and obsession can end in peace when one turns inward. The story does not end in despair.

Krishna tells Uddhava how the story ends: Pururavas, having sung this, left Urvashi's world and found peace in the Self.

21.26 Krishna to Uddhava

tato duḥsaṅgamutsṛjya satsu sajjeta buddhimān | santa evāsya chindanti manovyāsaṅgamuktibhiḥ ||

Therefore, giving up bad company, a wise person should attach himself to the good. The good alone, by their words, cut through the mind's entanglements.

Meaning today and context

When you are stuck, the right people around you can say what loosens the knot. Choose company that helps you see clearly.

Krishna draws the moral for Uddhava: give up bad company and keep the company of the good, whose words cut through the mind's attachments.

21.27 Krishna to Uddhava

santo'napekṣā maccittāḥ praśāntāḥ samadarśinaḥ | nirmamā nirahaṅkārā nirdvandvā niṣparigrahāḥ ||

The saints are free of expectation, their minds on me, deeply peaceful, seeing all equally, without 'mine' or ego, beyond the pairs of opposites, owning nothing.

A true saint asks for nothing; be wary of anyone demanding money, obedience or isolation from family in the name of spirituality.

Meaning today and context

This is a way to recognise trustworthy guides: they want nothing from you, are calm, treat everyone the same and are not ego-driven.

Krishna describes the good, the saints worth seeking out.

21.28 Krishna to Uddhava

teṣu nityaṃ mahābhāga mahābhāgeṣu matkathāḥ | sambhavanti hi tā nṝṇāṃ juṣatāṃ prapunantyagham ||

Among those blessed ones, O fortunate one, talks about me always arise, and those who take part in them are cleansed of their wrongs.

Meaning today and context

Spending time where good things are spoken of has a cleansing effect; it slowly changes what fills our minds.

Krishna tells Uddhava that talk of him always flows among such saints, and it purifies those who take part.

21.29 Krishna to Uddhava

tā ye śṛṇvanti gāyanti hyanumodanti cādṛtāḥ | matparāḥ śraddadhānāśca bhaktiṃ vindanti te mayi ||

Those who hear these stories, sing them and rejoice in them with respect, devoted to me and full of faith, gain devotion to me.

Meaning today and context

Devotion grows by simple means: listening, singing, enjoying what is good. You don't need to be special to begin.

Krishna says those who hear, sing and rejoice in his stories with faith gain devotion to him.

21.30 Krishna to Uddhava

bhaktiṃ labdhavataḥ sādhoḥ kimanyadavaśiṣyate | mayyanantaguṇe brahmaṇyānandānubhavātmani ||

For a good soul who has gained devotion to me, Brahman of infinite qualities, whose nature is the experience of bliss, what else remains to be attained?

Meaning today and context

Much restless seeking comes from feeling something is missing. Devotion, the text says, fills that gap.

Krishna says nothing remains to be gained for one who has devotion to him, the infinite Brahman whose nature is bliss.

21.31 Krishna to Uddhava

yathopaśrayamāṇasya bhagavantaṃ vibhāvasum | śītaṃ bhayaṃ tamo'pyeti sādhūnsaṃsevatastathā ||

Just as cold, fear and darkness go away for one who draws near the blessed fire, so they go for one who serves the saints.

Meaning today and context

Being near good, wise people warms and steadies us; fear and gloom lift in their presence.

Krishna compares serving the saints to sitting by a fire.

21.32 Krishna to Uddhava

nimajjyonmajjatāṃ ghore bhavābdhau paramāyaṇam | santo brahmavidaḥ śāntā naurdṛḍhevāpsu majjatām ||

For those who sink and rise again in the terrible ocean of worldly existence, the peaceful saints who know Brahman are the supreme refuge, like a sturdy boat for those drowning in the water.

If you feel you are going under, reach out now to someone you trust or Tele-MANAS 14416; good company works alongside professional help.

Meaning today and context

When life feels like going under again and again, steady, wise people can keep you afloat. Reach out to them.

Krishna says the saints are the refuge for those sinking in the ocean of worldly life, like a strong boat for the drowning.

21.33 Krishna to Uddhava

annaṃ hi prāṇināṃ prāṇa ārtānāṃ śaraṇaṃ tvaham | dharmo vittaṃ nṛṇāṃ pretya santo'rvāgbibhyato'raṇam ||

Food is the life of living beings; I am the refuge of the afflicted; dharma is people's wealth after death; and the saints are the shelter of those who fear falling.

Meaning today and context

Each need has its true support. When you are suffering there is refuge in God; when you fear losing your way, good people hold you.

Krishna lists what each person needs: food for life, himself for the afflicted, dharma as wealth after death, the saints for those afraid of falling.

21.34 Krishna to Uddhava

santo diśanti cakṣūṃsi bahirarkaḥ samutthitaḥ | devatā bāndhavāḥ santaḥ santa ātmāhameva ca ||

The saints give eyes to see, while the risen sun gives only outer sight. The saints are our deities, the saints our kin; the saints are our very Self, and they are I myself.

Honouring saints is not blind obedience to anyone who claims holiness; be wary of anyone who demands money or control.

Meaning today and context

Wise people help us see what we could not see alone; that is why they matter as much as family.

Krishna says the saints give true sight, as the rising sun gives outer sight, and that they are one's gods, kin, Self and Krishna himself.

21.35 Krishna to Uddhava

vaitasenastato'pyevamurvaśyā lokaniṣpṛhaḥ | muktasaṅgo mahīmetāmātmārāmaścacāra ha ||

Thereupon Vaitasena (Pururavas), in this way no longer longing for Urvashi's world, freed from attachment and delighting in the Self, wandered this earth.

Wandering here is the story's ending, not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

The one who chased craving across the world ends free and content within himself.

Krishna ends the story: Pururavas, free of desire for Urvashi's world, wandered the earth content in the Self.
