Attainments (siddhis) are born of birth, of herbs, of mantra, of austerity, or of samādhi.
'Herbs' (oṣadhi) records an ancient claim; it is never a reason to take drugs, psychedelics or any unprescribed substance. Siddhis are what the text claims, not feats to chase or proof of anything; be wary of anyone selling powers or demanding money or obedience for them.

Unusual abilities or experiences can come from many sources, and samādhi is only one of them. So a special experience is not by itself a sign of spiritual progress; what yoga values is the clarity that grows through practice.
The opening of the fourth pāda, Kaivalya-pāda: Patañjali lists five sources of extraordinary attainments, linking the powers of pāda 3 to the question of how the mind is transformed.
Transformation into another kind [of being] comes from the overflowing of nature (prakṛti).
Meaning today and context
Deep change is less like building something new and more like letting a potential already in you come forward. Growth often happens when conditions allow it, not by force.
Patañjali explains how a change of kind or state happens: not by adding something from outside, but by nature (prakṛti) filling in its own potential.
The instrumental cause does not set the [forces of] nature in motion; it only breaks through the barrier, like a farmer [opening a channel so water flows into the field].
Meaning today and context
Practice doesn't manufacture peace; it clears what blocks it. Like the farmer, your work is often to remove obstacles, such as habits, clutter and distraction, and let the natural flow do the rest.
Continuing 4.2 with an analogy: practices and good actions do not themselves produce the change; they remove the obstruction so that nature can flow, as a farmer breaks the bund to let water into a field.
Created minds arise from I-am-ness (asmitā) alone.
This describes a power the text claims; it is not a feat to attempt or to believe someone has. Siddhis are what the text claims, not feats to chase or proof of anything; be wary of anyone selling powers or demanding money or obedience for them.
Meaning today and context
Whatever its literal sense, the sūtra points out that the sense of 'I' is what organises a mind. The many selves we live as, the worker, the parent, the anxious one, are all built around that same I-sense.
Patañjali takes up a claim of the tradition that a yogi can create several minds (for several bodies): such minds arise from the sense of 'I' alone. It can be read as a literal power or as a statement that every mind takes shape around the I-sense.
In their different activities, one mind is the director of the many.
Meaning today and context
Life pulls us into many roles at once. The sūtra suggests one directing mind stands behind them; gathering our roles around a single centre brings steadiness instead of feeling scattered.
Completing 4.4: though the created minds carry on distinct activities, one original mind directs them all.
Of these, the [mind] born of meditation is without a store of residues (āśaya).
Meaning today and context
Gifts of birth, substances or rituals leave us as we were, often with new cravings. A mind clarified by meditation does not pile up new baggage, which is why yoga prizes meditation above other routes.
Among the five sources of attainment named in 4.1, only the mind born of meditation leaves no store of karmic residue behind.
The action of a yogi is neither white nor black; that of others is of three kinds.
This does not mean a 'realised' person is beyond ethics; the yamas and niyamas remain the foundation. Be wary of anyone who uses it to excuse harmful conduct.
Meaning today and context
Most of our actions carry a personal stake, reward or blame, and so feed cycles of pride and guilt. Action done without clinging to its result does not bind us in the same way.
The discussion of karma and residue begins: ordinary action is white (meritorious), black (harmful) or mixed; the yogi's action, done without self-interest, is neither.
From that [threefold karma] there manifest only those latent tendencies (vāsanās) that correspond to its ripening.
Meaning today and context
Old patterns don't all show up at once; the right trigger wakes the matching habit. Noticing which situations bring out which reactions is the first step in changing them.
Patañjali explains how karma surfaces: of the countless stored tendencies, only those that match the present ripening of karma become active.
Even when separated by birth, place and time, [vāsanās] follow in unbroken sequence, because memory and impression (saṃskāra) are of one form.
Meaning today and context
A habit you thought you had left years ago can return intact when conditions match. That is not a personal failing; it is how impressions work, which is why awareness has to be ongoing.
Patañjali explains why tendencies persist across long gaps: an impression and the memory it produces are of one form, so a pattern can reawaken unchanged after any interval.
And these [vāsanās] are beginningless, because the desire [to be] is eternal.
Meaning today and context
You did not invent your cravings and fears; they grow from the deep wish to exist and be well that every living being shares. Seeing this can replace self-blame with patience.
The vāsanās have no first beginning, because the basic wish 'may I be' (āśis) is always present in living beings.
Because they are held together by cause, result, substrate and support, when these are absent, they [the vāsanās] are absent.
Meaning today and context
A habit needs fuel: a reason, a payoff, a mind that holds it, and a trigger. Remove the trigger and the payoff, and work on the misunderstanding underneath, and the pattern weakens and fades.
Though beginningless, vāsanās can end: they are held together by a cause (ignorance), a result, a mind to rest in and an object to latch onto; when these go, they go.
The past and the future exist in their own form, because the characteristics (dharmas) differ [only] in their path through time.
Meaning today and context
What you were and what you may become are both present in you as potential. The past is not simply gone and the future is not empty, which is why what you practise now shapes what manifests next.
The start of Patañjali's theory of time and objects: nothing comes from nothing; past and future states exist in latent form and differ only in whether they are manifest now.
They are manifest or subtle, and of the nature of the guṇas.
Meaning today and context
Every thought, mood and thing is a play of the same three qualities, clarity, activity and inertia, sometimes showing and sometimes hidden. Moods change because their make-up keeps shifting.
Continuing the theory of objects: every characteristic, whether present (manifest) or past and future (subtle), is made of the three guṇas.
The object being the same, because minds differ, the two [object and mind] follow separate paths.
Meaning today and context
The same event can feel like a threat to one person and an opportunity to another. The difference lies in the mind that meets it, and that is where our own work lies.
Against the view that objects are merely mental: the same object is perceived differently by different minds, so object and mind are distinct.
na caikacittatantraṃ vastu tadapramāṇakaṃ tadā kiṃ syāt ||
Nor does an object depend on a single mind; [if it did,] what would it be when not cognised by that mind?
Meaning today and context
The world doesn't vanish when you stop looking, and it doesn't revolve around your perception. That is humbling and steadying: other people and things have their own reality.
A further argument against idealism: an object does not depend on one person's mind. Some editions treat this line as commentary rather than a sūtra.
The movements of the mind are always known to their master, the puruṣa, because it does not change.
Meaning today and context
Something in you is always aware of what the mind is doing, even when the mind is in turmoil. Meditation is largely learning to rest as that witness instead of being swept along by every thought.
Unlike outer objects, which are sometimes known and sometimes not, the mind's own movements are always witnessed by the unchanging seer, the puruṣa.
It [the mind] is not self-luminous, because it is seen.
Stepping back from thoughts helps many people, but persistent intrusive or distressing thoughts, or feeling detached from yourself, deserve proper care; this is not a substitute for treatment. Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
You can watch your thoughts, so you are not simply your thoughts. A harsh or frightening thought is something seen, not a verdict on who you are.
A key step in the argument: because the mind is itself seen, it cannot be the seer; the light by which it is known comes from the puruṣa.
And both [the mind and its object] cannot be ascertained at the same time.
Meaning today and context
When you are lost in a thought, you don't know you are lost in it; the moment you notice, you have already stepped back. That noticing is the doorway practice keeps opening.
A further argument that the mind is not its own knower: it cannot, at one and the same moment, grasp an object and grasp itself grasping.
If [the mind] were seen by another mind, there would be an endless series of cognitions of cognitions, and confusion of memories.
Meaning today and context
Watching your mind with yet another layer of anxious commentary only adds noise. The way out is not more thinking about thinking, but resting in plain awareness.
Patañjali rules out the alternative that one mind is known by another mind: that leads to an endless regress of cognitions and a muddle of memories.
Consciousness (citi), which does not move across [to objects], knows its own intellect when [the intellect] takes on its form.
Meaning today and context
Awareness itself does not get agitated; the mind gets agitated and borrows awareness's light. Even in your worst moods, the awareness that notices them is untouched.
How the unmoving seer knows the mind: consciousness does not pass into objects, but when the mind takes on its form, as if reflecting it, one's own mind becomes known.
The mind, coloured by both the seer and the seen, [takes on] every object.
Meaning today and context
The mind blends awareness and content so seamlessly that we take our moods to be ourselves. Seeing this blending is where discernment begins.
The mind stands between seer and seen and is coloured by both; that is why it can grasp any object, and also why it is so easily mistaken for the self.
Though variegated by countless vāsanās, it [the mind] exists for another's sake, because it acts in combination.
Meaning today and context
Your mind, with all its habits, is an instrument, not the owner. Treating it as a tool you can train, rather than a master you must obey, changes how you relate to it.
Whatever is compounded serves something beyond itself; the mind, made of combined parts and tendencies, exists for the puruṣa, not for itself.
For one who sees the distinction, the [habitual] dwelling on [the mind as] oneself ceases.
This is not about suppressing your identity or feelings. If you feel unreal or cut off from yourself or the world, that needs care, not more practice; seek help (Tele-MANAS 14416).
Meaning today and context
When you clearly see that you are not your mental states, the constant anxious questioning about who you are begins to quieten. Identity becomes less of a burden.
The turn toward the conclusion: once the difference between mind and seer is seen, the habit of taking the mind as the self falls away. It is also read as the end of brooding speculation on 'who am I?'.
In the gaps of that [discernment], other thoughts arise from [old] impressions (saṃskāras).
Slipping back is part of change, not a reason for shame. For addiction or compulsive habits, combine practice with professional support; in distress, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Falling back into old habits is normal, even after real progress. When an old reaction or craving resurfaces, it is old conditioning leaking through a gap, not proof that you have failed; notice it and return.
A realistic warning: even when discernment is strong, in its gaps old impressions throw up other thoughts and patterns.
Their removal is as has been described for the afflictions (kleśas).
Meaning today and context
There is no new trick for a relapse: return to the basics that worked, discipline, self-study, surrender and meditation, and keep seeing the pattern clearly until it loses its grip.
Pointing back to pāda 2: these resurfacing impressions are removed in the same way as the kleśas, by kriyā-yoga, by meditation, and by tracing them back to their source.
For one who seeks no gain even from the highest insight (prasaṅkhyāna), from discriminative discernment in every respect comes the samādhi called 'cloud of dharma' (dharma-megha).
Intensive meditation can surface distressing experiences; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under qualified guidance. Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Even spiritual achievement can become something to hoard. The final step is letting go of wanting any reward, even for insight.
The summit of practice: when even the fruit of the highest insight is not grasped at, a samādhi called 'cloud of dharma' (dharma-megha) arises. 'Akusīda' literally means one who takes no interest, as on a loan.
Yoga holds that suffering rooted in ignorance and craving can truly end, not just be managed. For most of us, every step of lessening it is already a measure of freedom.
The result of dharma-megha samādhi: the afflictions and the binding power of karma come to an end.
Then, because knowledge freed from all coverings and impurities is infinite, what is to be known is little.
This describes the text's claim about liberation; it is no reason to believe anyone who claims to know everything or demands unquestioning obedience.

Clarity is less about collecting information and more about removing what clouds the mind. As the veils thin, what seemed complicated becomes simple.
The knowledge of the freed mind: with every covering removed, knowledge is boundless and what is left to know seems small.
Kaivalya is the return [to their source] of the guṇas, now empty of purpose for the puruṣa; or, it is the power of consciousness established in its own nature. Thus [ends the text].
Kaivalya ('aloneness') means freedom from bondage, not isolating yourself or abandoning family and responsibilities.

The goal of yoga is not to gain something new but to return to what you already are: awareness resting in itself, no longer lost in the mind's movements.
The final sūtra defines kaivalya from two sides: from nature's side the guṇas withdraw into their source; from the seer's side consciousness rests in its own nature, echoing 1.3. 'Iti' marks the end of the text.
