Vibhūti Pāda

3.1 Patanjali

deśabandhaścittasya dhāraṇā ||

Concentration (dhāraṇā) is binding the mind to one place.

Meaning today and context

Focus begins with choosing one place for attention, such as the breath, a point, or the task in front of you, and keeping the mind tied there. When it slips away, you tie it back again; that returning is the practice.

Opens the third pāda with a definition: the sixth limb of yoga, dhāraṇā (concentration), following pratyāhāra at the end of pāda 2.

3.2 Patanjali

tatra pratyayaikatānatā dhyānam ||

There [in that place], a single continuous flow of awareness is meditation (dhyāna).

Intensive concentration can bring up distressing memories or feelings. If you live with trauma, psychosis or severe depression, practise under a qualified teacher alongside proper care; if distress arises, stop, ground yourself and seek help (Tele-MANAS 14416). Meditation is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.

Meaning today and context

Concentration is bringing the mind back again and again; meditation is when attention stays with its object in an unbroken stream. It grows out of patient concentration and cannot be forced.

Defines the seventh limb, dhyāna (meditation), as the next stage of the concentration just defined.

3.3 Patanjali

tadevārthamātranirbhāsaṃ svarūpaśūnyamiva samādhiḥ ||

That same [meditation], when only the object shines forth and it is as if empty of its own form, is samādhi.

In deep absorption the sense of 'I am meditating' falls away and only what you attend to remains. Moments of complete absorption in work or music give a small taste of it; it comes as a result of steady practice, not by grasping for it.

Defines the eighth limb, samādhi (absorption), as meditation matured until only the object remains.

3.4 Patanjali

trayamekatra saṃyamaḥ ||

The three [concentration, meditation and absorption] together on one [object] are saṃyama.

Meaning today and context

Saṃyama is the name for sustained, whole-hearted attention on one thing, from first focus to complete absorption. Patanjali treats it as the tool for everything that follows in this chapter.

Gives a single technical name to the three limbs just defined; the rest of the pāda uses this term throughout.

3.5 Patanjali

tajjayātprajñālokaḥ ||

From mastery of that [saṃyama] comes the light of insight (prajñā).

Meaning today and context

Clear understanding grows out of steady attention. A scattered mind sees little; a mind that can stay with something begins to see it as it is.

States the first result of mastering saṃyama.

3.6 Patanjali

tasya bhūmiṣu viniyogaḥ ||

Its application is by stages.

Meaning today and context

Go step by step. Ground the basics before reaching for subtler practices; skipping stages usually leads to confusion or frustration.

A rule of method: saṃyama is applied step by step, from grosser to subtler levels.

3.7 Patanjali

trayamantaraṅgaṃ pūrvebhyaḥ ||

These three are inner limbs, compared with the previous ones.

Meaning today and context

Ethics, posture, breath and withdrawal of the senses prepare the ground; concentration, meditation and absorption are the inner work itself. Yoga is more than postures, and the inner work rests on the outer foundation.

Places the last three limbs relative to the first five (yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra) of pāda 2.

3.8 Patanjali

tadapi bahiraṅgaṃ nirbījasya ||

Even these are external to the seedless [samādhi].

Meaning today and context

Every method is still a method; the goal lies beyond technique. Holding even one's practice lightly guards against pride in it and against mistaking the tool for the destination.

Qualifies 3.7: even the inner limbs are outer when measured against seedless (nirbīja) samādhi, introduced at 1.51.

3.9 Patanjali

vyutthānanirodhasaṃskārayorabhibhavaprādurbhāvau nirodhakṣaṇacittānvayo nirodhapariṇāmaḥ ||

When the impressions of outgoing activity are overpowered and the impressions of restraint appear, the mind's connection with the moment of restraint is the transformation of restraint.

Meaning today and context

The mind changes through its impressions. Each time you pause instead of reacting, the impression of restraint grows a little stronger than the pull outward; small moments add up.

Begins a short account of how the mind is transformed (pariṇāma); this first is the transformation of restraint (nirodha).

3.10 Patanjali

tasya praśāntavāhitā saṃskārāt ||

Its calm flow comes from [repeated] impression.

Meaning today and context

Calm becomes natural only through repetition. Each quiet moment lays down a groove that makes the next one easier, which is why daily practice matters more than occasional effort.

Continues 3.9: how the state of restraint becomes steady.

3.11 Patanjali

sarvārthataikāgratayoḥ kṣayodayau cittasya samādhipariṇāmaḥ ||

The waning of all-pointedness and the rising of one-pointedness is the mind's samādhi-transformation.

Meaning today and context

Scatter fades and single focus grows; that shift is what practice produces. Jumping between many things at once trains the mind in the opposite direction.

The second transformation: the mind's change towards samādhi.

3.12 Patanjali

tataḥ punaḥ śāntoditau tulyapratyayau cittasyaikāgratāpariṇāmaḥ ||

Then again, when the subsiding and the arising awareness are alike, that is the mind's transformation of one-pointedness.

Meaning today and context

In steady focus, each passing moment of awareness is followed by one of the same kind; the mind stays on one thing, moment after moment, without effortful struggle.

The third transformation: one-pointedness itself.

3.13 Patanjali

etena bhūtendriyeṣu dharmalakṣaṇāvasthāpariṇāmā vyākhyātāḥ ||

By this, the transformations of property, temporal character and condition in the elements and senses are explained.

Meaning today and context

Everything is changing: in form, in its place in time, and in its condition, just as the mind does. Seeing this clearly loosens our clinging to things as if they were fixed.

Extends the analysis of change from the mind to the elements and senses, naming three kinds of transformation.

3.14 Patanjali

śāntoditāvyapadeśyadharmānupātī dharmī ||

The substance is that which runs through properties that have subsided, that have arisen, and that are not yet manifest.

Meaning today and context

Clay remains clay whether it is a lump, a pot or broken pieces. Beneath change something continues; you are more than any single phase of your life.

Defines the substance (dharmin) that persists through the changes described in 3.13.

3.15 Patanjali

kramānyatvaṃ pariṇāmānyatve hetuḥ ||

Difference in sequence is the cause of difference in transformation.

Meaning today and context

Change is orderly: different sequences produce different results. This underlies the claim that the mind, too, can be reshaped by a steady sequence of practice.

Completes the theory of change: why transformations differ.

3.16 Patanjali

pariṇāmatrayasaṃyamādatītānāgatajñānam ||

By saṃyama on the three transformations, knowledge of the past and the future.

This sūtra states what the text claims follows from saṃyama; it is not a feat to attempt or test, and it proves nothing about anyone. Be wary of anyone who sells, demonstrates or promises such powers, or asks for money or obedience in return. Patanjali himself calls these powers obstacles to samādhi (3.37).

Meaning today and context

This is the text's claim about saṃyama, not a promise to anyone. At most it reminds us that understanding how things change makes consequences less surprising; no one can sell you your future.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; the list begins here.

3.17 Patanjali

śabdārthapratyayānāmitaretarādhyāsātsaṃkarastatpravibhāgasaṃyamātsarvabhūtarutajñānam ||

Word, object and idea are confused because each is superimposed on the others; by saṃyama on their distinction, knowledge of the sounds of all beings.

The first half is a sharp observation: we confuse words, things and our ideas about them. The power to understand every creature's cry is the text's claim, not something to expect.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.18 Patanjali

saṃskārasākṣātkaraṇātpūrvajātijñānam ||

By direct perception of impressions (saṃskāras), knowledge of previous births.

This is the text's claim. Paid 'past-life readings' have no warrant here; what matters in practice is seeing the habits you carry now.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.19 Patanjali

pratyayasya paracittajñānam ||

[By saṃyama] on another's awareness, knowledge of the other's mind.

This is the text's claim, not a skill anyone can show you. Ordinary attentiveness can help us understand others better, but nobody can read your mind.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.20 Patanjali

na ca tatsālambanaṃ tasyāviṣayībhūtatvāt ||

But not together with its object, since that was not the object [of saṃyama].

Even within its own claim, the text limits this power: one would know that another mind is, say, angry, but not what it is about.

A qualification of 3.19 on the limits of knowing another's mind; some editions do not count it as a separate sūtra.

3.21 Patanjali

kāyarūpasaṃyamāttadgrāhyaśaktistambhe cakṣuḥprakāśāsaṃprayoge'ntardhānam ||

By saṃyama on the form of the body, when its capacity to be seen is suspended and there is no contact with the light of the eye, disappearance.

Invisibility is the text's claim, not an achievable feat. Anyone claiming to demonstrate it is performing a trick.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.22 Patanjali

sopakramaṃ nirupakramaṃ ca karma tatsaṃyamādaparāntajñānamariṣṭebhyo vā ||

Karma is either fast-acting or slow; by saṃyama on it, or from omens, knowledge of one's death.

Do not trust predictions or omens about death. If you are worried about your health, see a doctor; if thoughts of death distress you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is the text's claim. No one can reliably tell you when you will die, and omens are not medical signs.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.23 Patanjali

maitryādiṣu balāni ||

On friendliness and the others, strengths.

Meaning today and context

Friendliness, compassion and gladness for others, practised with full attention, become real strengths of character rather than passing moods. Kindness can be trained like any other skill.

In the list of results of saṃyama, this one turns to the qualities of 1.33: friendliness, compassion and gladness.

3.24 Patanjali

baleṣu hastibalādīni ||

On strengths, the strength of an elephant and the like.

This is the text's claim, not a fitness method. Physical strength comes from training, food and rest, not from saṃyama.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.25 Patanjali

pravṛttyālokanyāsātsūkṣmavyavahitaviprakṛṣṭajñānam ||

By directing the light of the [luminous] activity, knowledge of the subtle, the hidden and the distant.

Meaning today and context

We take the mind's moods and thoughts to be ourselves. Seeing that thoughts and feelings are observed, and that you are the one who observes them, loosens their grip.

Patanjali himself treats powers as obstacles. No display of 'powers' proves anyone's holiness; never give money, obedience or trust to someone because they claim or demonstrate them.

Meaning today and context

What looks impressive from outside can be a trap for the one who has it. Special talents, success and admiration are useful in the world, but clinging to them pulls you off the deeper path. Don't be dazzled by your own achievements or by anyone else's displays.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; it begins a group on mastery of the elements.

3.45 Patanjali

tato'ṇimādiprādurbhāvaḥ kāyasaṃpattaddharmānabhighātaśca ||

From that, the appearance of [powers like] minuteness, perfection of the body, and freedom from obstruction by the properties [of the elements].

This is the text's claim. The 'eight siddhis' such as becoming tiny are not feats anyone can show.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama.

3.46 Patanjali

rūpalāvaṇyabalavajrasaṃhananatvāni kāyasaṃpat ||

Beauty, grace, strength and diamond-hard firmness are perfection of the body.

Be wary of products or courses that promise beauty or an unbreakable body through yoga.

Meaning today and context

This is the text's claim, not a health or beauty promise.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; it defines the 'perfection of the body' named in 3.45.

3.47 Patanjali

grahaṇasvarūpāsmitānvayārthavattvasaṃyamādindriyajayaḥ ||

By saṃyama on the grasping, essential nature, I-sense, connectedness and purposefulness [of the senses], mastery over the senses.

As a claim of total mastery this belongs to the list of powers; the ordinary, usable lesson is the gradual sense-restraint of pratyāhāra (2.54–2.55).

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; it parallels 3.44, now for the senses.

3.48 Patanjali

tato manojavitvaṃ vikaraṇabhāvaḥ pradhānajayaśca ||

From that, speed like the mind, functioning without the instruments [of the body], and mastery over primal nature.

3.49 Patanjali

sattvapuruṣānyatākhyātimātrasya sarvabhāvādhiṣṭhātṛtvaṃ sarvajñātṛtvaṃ ca ||

For one who has only the discernment of the difference between sattva and puruṣa, sovereignty over all states of being and all-knowingness.

This sūtra states what the text claims follows from saṃyama; it is not a feat to attempt or test, and it proves nothing about anyone. Meaning today and context

This is the text's highest claim of power. Anyone presenting themselves as all-knowing or all-powerful is a reason for caution, not devotion.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; this is its culmination, just before the call to give up even this (3.50).

3.50 Patanjali

tadvairāgyādapi doṣabījakṣaye kaivalyam ||

By dispassion even towards that, when the seeds of fault are destroyed, there is kaivalya (freedom, aloneness of the seer).

Meaning today and context

Even the greatest power and knowledge must be let go. Freedom comes not from gaining more but from not clinging even to the best you have gained; achievement, status or expertise can become a new chain.

The turn of the pāda: after listing all the powers, Patanjali says freedom comes only by letting go even of the highest of them.

3.51 Patanjali

sthānyupanimantraṇe saṅgasmayākaraṇaṃ punaraniṣṭaprasaṅgāt ||

When invited by those in high places, one should give way neither to attachment nor to pride, because of the risk of the unwanted again.

Meaning today and context

Flattery and tempting offers come most when you have made some progress. Don't relish the attention or grow proud of it; both can pull you back down. A promotion, praise from the powerful or an invitation to the inner circle is a moment to stay humble and alert.

A warning to the advanced practitioner: those in high places (usually understood as the gods) may invite or tempt them, and this must not be enjoyed or taken as a mark of pride.

3.52 Patanjali

kṣaṇatatkramayoḥ saṃyamādvivekajaṃ jñānam ||

By saṃyama on the moment and its sequence, knowledge born of discrimination.

Meaning today and context

Close attention to the present moment, and to how one moment follows another, sharpens discernment. Only the present moment is actually given; the sense of a long sequence is something the mind assembles.

Turns from powers to the knowledge that liberates: discriminative knowledge (vivekaja jñāna) and how it arises.

3.53 Patanjali

jātilakṣaṇadeśairanyatānavacchedāttulyayostataḥ pratipattiḥ ||

From that, discernment between two similar things whose difference cannot be determined by class, mark or position.

Meaning today and context

Fine discernment sees differences where ordinary perception sees only sameness; in the end, the difference between the mind and the one who sees it.

Describes what discriminative knowledge can do.

3.54 Patanjali

tārakaṃ sarvaviṣayaṃ sarvathāviṣayamakramaṃ ceti vivekajaṃ jñānam ||

Knowledge born of discrimination is liberating (tāraka), has everything for its object, every mode for its object, and is without sequence.

Meaning today and context

Patanjali says the deepest insight is not gathered piece by piece like information; it is whole and carries one across suffering.

Defines discriminative knowledge by its qualities.

3.55 Patanjali

sattvapuruṣayoḥ śuddhisāmye kaivalyamiti ||

When the purity of sattva equals that of puruṣa, there is kaivalya.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is when the mind becomes so clear that it no longer distorts or hides the seer. No special power is needed for it; only clarity.

Closes the pāda by defining kaivalya, the goal toward which the whole discussion of powers has been pointing.
