Sādhana Pāda

2.1 Patanjali

tapaḥsvādhyāyeśvarapraṇidhānāni kriyāyogaḥ ||

Discipline (tapas), self-study (svādhyāya) and devotion to the Lord (Īśvara-praṇidhāna) are the yoga of action.

Tapas means steady self-discipline, not punishing the body. Do not fast, cut sleep or hurt yourself in the name of austerity; if you have a health condition, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Yoga begins not with withdrawal but with three everyday practices: keeping a steady discipline, studying and reflecting on yourself through good texts, and offering your efforts to something larger than yourself. Effort, understanding and surrender together.

Opening of the Sādhana-pāda. Having described samādhi in pāda 1, Patañjali now gives a practice for those not yet settled: the yoga of action (kriyā-yoga), defined as three disciplines.

2.2 Patanjali

samādhibhāvanārthaḥ kleśatanūkaraṇārthaśca ||

[It is practised] for cultivating samādhi and for weakening the afflictions (kleśas).

Meaning today and context

Daily discipline is not an end in itself. Its job is to make the mind calm enough to go deeper and to wear down the habits of ignorance, ego, craving, aversion and fear. Judge your practice by whether those are slowly thinning.

States the two purposes of kriyā-yoga given in 2.1: it prepares the mind for samādhi and it thins out the afflictions (kleśas) introduced in the next sūtra.

2.3 Patanjali

avidyāsmitārāgadveṣābhiniveśāḥ kleśāḥ ||

Ignorance (avidyā), the sense of 'I am' (asmitā), attachment (rāga), aversion (dveṣa) and clinging to life (abhiniveśa) are the afflictions.

Meaning today and context

Most of our suffering can be traced to five roots: not seeing clearly, over-identifying with ourselves, clinging to what pleases, pushing away what hurts, and the deep fear of losing life itself. Naming them is the first step to noticing them at work.

A list: Patañjali names the five afflictions (kleśas) that kriyā-yoga is meant to weaken. The next six sūtras define each.

2.4 Patanjali

avidyā kṣetramuttareṣāṃ prasuptatanuvicchinnodārāṇām ||

Ignorance is the field for the others, whether they are dormant, thinned, interrupted or fully active.

Meaning today and context

A craving or anger may be asleep, weakened, temporarily blocked by another mood, or in full flow. Not feeling it today does not mean it is gone; the root is misperception, and that is what needs work.

Patañjali places ignorance (avidyā) as the ground of the other four afflictions and names four states in which an affliction can exist.

2.5 Patanjali

anityāśuciduḥkhānātmasu nityaśucisukhātmakhyātiravidyā ||

Ignorance is taking the impermanent for permanent, the impure for pure, the painful for pleasant, and what is not the self for the self.

Meaning today and context

We expect jobs, bodies, relationships and pleasures to last, to be flawless, to satisfy for good, and to be who we are. When they change, we are shaken. Seeing them as they are is not pessimism; it is what frees us from being blindsided.

Definition of ignorance (avidyā): four specific kinds of mistaken seeing.

2.6 Patanjali

dṛgdarśanaśaktyorekātmatevāsmitā ||

Asmitā is the apparent oneness of the power of the seer and the power of seeing [the mind].

Meaning today and context

We assume we are our thoughts, moods and opinions. When a thought is criticised we feel attacked; when a mood passes through we say 'I am anxious'. Noticing that you are the one aware of the mind, not the mind itself, gives room to breathe.

Definition of asmitā, the 'I-am' affliction: the seer and the instrument of seeing are taken to be one.

2.7 Patanjali

sukhānuśayī rāgaḥ ||

Attachment is that which follows upon pleasure.

Meaning today and context

Every pleasure leaves a residue that wants it again. That pull is not wicked, but if unseen it quietly runs our choices: the extra scroll, the extra drink, the need for one more compliment.

Definition of rāga, attachment, the third affliction.

2.8 Patanjali

duḥkhānuśayī dveṣaḥ ||

Aversion is that which follows upon pain.

Meaning today and context

Past hurt leaves a residue too: a recoil from people, places or tasks that once caused pain. Much of our avoidance, resentment and grudges are this mark, not a fresh judgement of what is in front of us.

Definition of dveṣa, aversion, the counterpart of rāga.

2.9 Patanjali

svarasavāhī viduṣo'pi tathā rūḍho'bhiniveśaḥ ||

Clinging to life (abhiniveśa), flowing by its own momentum, is rooted in this way even in the wise.

Fear of death and health anxiety are real and common. Get physical symptoms checked by a doctor, and if worry about illness or death is constant or disabling, seek help from a mental-health professional; Tele-MANAS 14416 is free and available 24x7.

Meaning today and context

The fear of death and of losing ourselves runs deep in everyone, scholars included. It shows up as health anxiety, dread of ageing, or panic at uncertainty. Knowing it is universal makes it less shameful and easier to meet gently.

Definition of abhiniveśa, the fifth affliction: the instinctive clinging to life, which Patañjali says grips even the learned.

2.10 Patanjali

te pratiprasavaheyāḥ sūkṣmāḥ ||

Those [afflictions], in their subtle form, are to be given up by resolving them back into their origin.

Meaning today and context

The deepest layer of a craving or fear is not handled by willpower in the moment but by understanding where it comes from, until the root itself dissolves. This is slow, inward work.

First of two methods against the kleśas: in their subtle, seed form they are removed by tracing them back to their source (pratiprasava).

2.11 Patanjali

dhyānaheyāstadvṛttayaḥ ||

Their active modifications are to be given up through meditation (dhyāna).

Intensive meditation can bring up distressing experiences. If you live with trauma, psychosis or severe depression, practise under guidance and alongside your clinician; if you feel overwhelmed, call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7). Meditation is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.

Meaning today and context

When anger, craving or fear is actually stirring, regular meditation helps you watch it rise and pass without being swept away. Each time you watch instead of react, the pattern loses a little force.

Second method: the active, surfaced forms of the kleśas (their vṛttis) are removed by meditation.

2.12 Patanjali

kleśamūlaḥ karmāśayo dṛṣṭādṛṣṭajanmavedanīyaḥ ||

The store of karma has the afflictions as its root, and is to be experienced in the present birth or in births not yet seen.

Meaning today and context

Actions done out of craving, aversion or fear leave traces that shape what we meet later. You need not accept rebirth to see the everyday version: what we do from our worst impulses comes back to us.

Patañjali links the kleśas to karma: the store of past actions (karmāśaya) grows from the afflictions and bears fruit in this life or later ones.

2.13 Patanjali

sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ ||

While the root exists, its ripening is [a particular] birth, length of life and experience.

This describes the text's theory of karma. It must never be used to blame anyone for their birth, illness, disability or misfortune, or to justify caste or exclusion.

Meaning today and context

The text teaches that the conditions we are born into, how long we live and what we go through are shaped by karma rooted in the afflictions. Read today, its practical point is that cutting the root matters more than polishing results.

Continuing 2.12: as long as the root (the kleśas) remains, karma ripens into three results.

2.14 Patanjali

te hlādaparitāpaphalāḥ puṇyāpuṇyahetutvāt ||

Those [birth, life and experience] bear the fruit of joy or anguish, because their cause is merit or demerit.

Meaning today and context

Good actions tend to ripen as ease, harmful ones as distress. This is the text's moral logic, not a scorecard to judge someone else's suffering by.

Continuing 2.13: the results of karma are felt as pleasure or pain according to whether the action was meritorious or not.

2.15 Patanjali

pariṇāmatāpasaṃskāraduḥkhairguṇavṛttivirodhācca duḥkhameva sarvaṃ vivekinaḥ ||

For the discerning, everything is indeed suffering, because of the pain of change, the pain of anxiety [over loss], the pain of residual impressions, and the conflict among the movements of the guṇas.

'Everything is suffering' is a philosophical analysis for discernment, not something to tell a person in despair. If life feels hopeless, please talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Even good things carry hidden costs: they change, we worry about losing them, and they leave cravings behind. This is not meant to make life look bleak but to show why lasting peace cannot rest on pleasures alone.

A strong claim: for the discerning person (vivekin), even pleasant experience is ultimately painful, for four reasons.

2.16 Patanjali

heyaṃ duḥkhamanāgatam ||

Suffering that has not yet come is to be avoided.

Meaning today and context

Past pain is done and present pain must be lived through, but future pain can often be prevented. Put energy into the habits and choices that stop tomorrow's suffering instead of only reliving yesterday's.

The turning point of the pāda's argument, framed like a physician's diagnosis: what is to be avoided (heya) is suffering that has not yet come.

2.17 Patanjali

draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ saṃyogo heyahetuḥ ||

The cause of what is to be avoided is the conjunction of the seer and the seen.

Meaning today and context

Suffering begins when awareness gets fused with what it observes: the body, the mind, the world. Learning to tell the knower from the known is the root medicine.

The cause of avoidable suffering: the conjunction (saṃyoga) of the seer and the seen. This begins the 'diagnosis' of 2.17–2.24.

2.18 Patanjali

prakāśakriyāsthitiśīlaṃ bhūtendriyātmakaṃ bhogāpavargārthaṃ dṛśyam ||

The seen has the nature of illumination, activity and inertia; it consists of the elements and the senses; and its purpose is experience and liberation.

Meaning today and context

The world and our own body-mind are not enemies. They exist so that we can experience life and, through it, become free. The same world that binds can teach.

Definition of 'the seen' (dṛśya): its nature, its makeup and its purpose.

2.19 Patanjali

viśeṣāviśeṣaliṅgamātrāliṅgāni guṇaparvāṇi ||

The specific, the non-specific, the merely indicated and the unmarked are the stages of the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

A map of how nature unfolds from its unmanifest source into subtle and then gross forms. It is part of the system's cosmology rather than direct advice.

Technical taxonomy: the four levels at which the guṇas manifest, from gross to unmanifest.

2.20 Patanjali

draṣṭā dṛśimātraḥ śuddho'pi pratyayānupaśyaḥ ||

The seer is seeing alone; though pure, it looks on through the mind's ideas.

Meaning today and context

Your awareness itself is untouched, but it sees through the lens of whatever the mind is holding. Worry tints everything with worry; that is the lens, not you.

Definition of the seer (draṣṭṛ): pure awareness, which nonetheless appears to take the colour of the mind's contents.

2.21 Patanjali

tadartha eva dṛśyasyātmā ||

The very being of the seen is for the sake of that [seer] alone.

Meaning today and context

Everything we experience serves the one who experiences it. Body, mind and world are instruments for awareness, not masters of it.

The relation of seen to seer: the seen exists for the sake of the seer.

2.22 Patanjali

kṛtārthaṃ prati naṣṭamapyanaṣṭaṃ tadanyasādhāraṇatvāt ||

Though it has ceased for one whose purpose is fulfilled, it has not ceased [altogether], since it is common to others.

Meaning today and context

One person's freedom does not abolish the world for everyone else. Liberation is not escape from the shared world; others still live in it and need it.

An objection answered: if the seen ends for a liberated person, why does the world continue? Because it is shared by others.

2.23 Patanjali

svasvāmiśaktyoḥ svarūpopalabdhihetuḥ saṃyogaḥ ||

Conjunction is the cause of apprehending the true nature of the powers of the owned and the owner.

Meaning today and context

The meeting of awareness and experience is not only a trap; it is also how we come to understand both. Life's entanglements are the classroom.

The function of the conjunction (saṃyoga) named in 2.17.

2.24 Patanjali

tasya heturavidyā ||

Its cause is ignorance.

Meaning today and context

We are bound not by the world itself but by misreading it. That is hopeful: misunderstanding can be corrected.

The cause of that conjunction is ignorance, tying the diagnosis back to 2.5.

2.25 Patanjali

tadabhāvātsaṃyogābhāvo hānaṃ taddṛśeḥ kaivalyam ||

With its absence, the conjunction is absent; that is the removal [of suffering], the aloneness (kaivalya) of the seer.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not acquiring something new but no longer confusing yourself with what you are not. Kaivalya, 'aloneness', means standing free, not being lonely.

The 'cure' in the medical frame: when ignorance goes, the conjunction goes; that removal is the seer's aloneness (kaivalya).

2.26 Patanjali

vivekakhyātiraviplavā hānopāyaḥ ||

The means of removal is unwavering discriminative discernment.

Meaning today and context

Occasional insight is not enough; clear seeing has to become steady, not flickering in and out under pressure. That is why practice is daily.

The means of removal: unwavering discriminative discernment (viveka-khyāti).

2.27 Patanjali

tasya saptadhā prāntabhūmiḥ prajñā ||

For that [person], wisdom reaches its final ground in seven stages.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom ripens in stages, not in one flash. The sūtra only says there are seven; what they are is filled in by later tradition, so it is enough to know that understanding deepens step by step.

The discernment of 2.26 culminates in a wisdom that reaches its final stage in seven ways; the sūtra does not list them.

2.28 Patanjali

yogāṅgānuṣṭhānādaśuddhikṣaye jñānadīptirā vivekakhyāteḥ ||

Through practising the limbs of yoga, as impurity wears away, the light of knowledge [grows] up to discriminative discernment.

Meaning today and context

Clarity is not handed to you; it grows as you keep practising and the clutter thins. The light brightens gradually, in proportion to the practice.

Introduces the eight limbs as the practical route to the discernment of 2.26: practice removes impurity and knowledge shines brighter.

yamaniyamāsanaprāṇāyāmapratyāhāradhāraṇādhyānasamādhayo'ṣṭāvaṅgāni ||

Restraints (yama), observances (niyama), posture (āsana), breath regulation (prāṇāyāma), withdrawal of the senses (pratyāhāra), concentration (dhāraṇā), meditation (dhyāna) and absorption (samādhi) are the eight limbs.

Meaning today and context

Yoga is far more than postures. It starts with how you treat others and yourself, then steadies the body and breath, turns the attention inward, and only then deepens into meditation. Posture is one limb of eight.

A list: the eight limbs (aṣṭāṅga) of yoga, which the rest of pāda 2 and the start of pāda 3 explain one by one.

ahiṃsāsatyāsteyabrahmacaryāparigrahā yamāḥ ||

Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, brahmacarya [restraint of desire] and non-possessiveness are the restraints.

Brahmacarya here means restraint and moderation of desire; it is not a demand for celibacy on anyone, and never a reason for shame about sexuality.

Meaning today and context

Before any technique, yoga asks you not to harm, not to lie, not to take what is not yours, not to be driven by desire, and not to hoard. A calm mind is hard to build on a life that keeps hurting others.

First limb defined: the five restraints (yamas), ethical commitments in how one treats others.

jātideśakālasamayānavacchinnāḥ sārvabhaumā mahāvratam ||

When they are not limited by birth, place, time or circumstance and extend to all levels, they are the great vow.

Meaning today and context

Most of us keep our values with exceptions: honest except at work, kind except to certain people. The great vow is holding them everywhere, for everyone, without convenient carve-outs.

Raises the yamas to a 'great vow' (mahāvrata) when they are kept without exceptions of birth, place, time or occasion.

śaucasaṃtoṣatapaḥsvādhyāyeśvarapraṇidhānāni niyamāḥ ||

Cleanliness, contentment, discipline, self-study and devotion to the Lord are the observances.

Tapas means steady self-discipline, not punishing the body. Do not fast, cut sleep or hurt yourself in the name of austerity; if you have a health condition, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Keep body and surroundings clean, be content with what you have, hold a steady discipline, keep learning about yourself, and offer your effort to something higher. These are daily habits, not exotic rituals.

Second limb defined: the five observances (niyamas), disciplines one keeps toward oneself. The last three repeat kriyā-yoga from 2.1.

vitarkabādhane pratipakṣabhāvanam ||

When troubled by unwholesome thoughts, [one should] cultivate the opposite (pratipakṣa-bhāvana).

This is a tool for everyday negative thoughts. Persistent, distressing intrusive thoughts (as in OCD, anxiety disorders or trauma) are not a failure of effort and may need clinical care; please see a mental-health professional or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

When anger, resentment or the urge to lie or grab arises, don't just fight the thought; deliberately turn the mind toward its opposite: patience, honesty, generosity. You weaken a habit by feeding its alternative.

Method for when the yamas and niyamas are under attack: when unwholesome thoughts (vitarka) press in, cultivate their opposite.

vitarkā hiṃsādayaḥ kṛtakāritānumoditā lobhakrodhamohapūrvakā mṛdumadhyādhimātrā duḥkhājñānānantaphalā iti pratipakṣabhāvanam ||

Unwholesome thoughts such as violence, whether done, caused to be done or approved; arising from greed, anger or delusion; mild, middling or intense, have endless fruits of suffering and ignorance. To reflect thus is cultivating the opposite.

Reflecting on consequences should not turn into self-punishment or endless guilt. If unwanted violent or distressing thoughts keep returning, this is a reason to seek professional help, not a sign you are bad; Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Before acting on anger or greed, pause and think it through: cheering on harm is harm too, small resentments grow, and acting on them breeds more pain and confusion. Seeing the consequences clearly takes the heat out of the impulse.

Spells out how to 'cultivate the opposite': reflect on how harmful thoughts arise, in what degrees, and what they lead to.

ahiṃsāpratiṣṭhāyāṃ tatsaṃnidhau vairatyāgaḥ ||

When non-violence is firmly established, hostility is given up in that person's presence.

This is the sūtra's own claim about where the practice leads, not a guaranteed or measurable outcome. Practising non-violence does not mean staying near someone who is hostile or abusive; protect yourself and seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

A person who truly means no harm tends to calm the people around them; aggression has less to push against. Gentleness is quietly contagious.

satyapratiṣṭhāyāṃ kriyāphalāśrayatvam ||

When truthfulness is firmly established, actions and their fruits come to rest on [that person's word].

This is the sūtra's own claim about where the practice leads, not a guaranteed or measurable outcome.

Meaning today and context

Someone who never bends the truth becomes someone whose word carries weight; what they say can be relied on to happen. Trust is built by long consistency.

Result of established truthfulness. The sūtra is read in more than one way: that the truthful person's actions reliably bear fruit, or that their words come true.

2.37 Patanjali

asteyapratiṣṭhāyāṃ sarvaratnopasthānam ||

When non-stealing is firmly established, all jewels present themselves.

This is the sūtra's own claim about where the practice leads, not a guaranteed or measurable outcome. It is not financial advice or a promise of wealth.

Meaning today and context

When you stop grabbing what is not yours, you find yourself trusted with what is valuable, and you notice the riches already around you. The point is integrity, not a get-rich formula.

Result of established non-stealing.

2.38 Patanjali

brahmacaryapratiṣṭhāyāṃ vīryalābhaḥ ||

When brahmacarya is firmly established, vigour is gained.

This is the sūtra's own claim about where the practice leads, not a guaranteed or measurable outcome. Brahmacarya means restraint and moderation of desire; it is not a demand for celibacy, not a reason for shame or guilt about sexuality, and never a justification for self-harm or for pressuring anyone. For sexual-health concerns, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Energy that is not scattered in compulsive chasing of desire becomes available for focus, work and practice. Moderation leaves you with more strength, not less.

Result of established brahmacarya (restraint of desire).

aparigrahasthairye janmakathaṃtāsaṃbodhaḥ ||

When non-possessiveness is steady, there arises full knowledge of the 'how' of births.

This is the sūtra's own claim about where the practice leads, not a guaranteed or measurable outcome. Be wary of anyone who claims to read your past lives for money or demands obedience on that basis.

Meaning today and context

When you stop defining yourself by what you own and hold, you start seeing more clearly why your life has taken the shape it has. The text speaks of knowing past births; the everyday point is perspective.

Result of steady non-possessiveness.

śaucātsvāṅgajugupsā parairasaṃsargaḥ ||

From cleanliness comes distaste for one's own body and non-contact with others.

This is not a reason for body shame, disgust at yourself, or avoiding people. If you struggle with body image, an eating disorder, or compulsive washing and fear of contamination, please seek professional help; Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

Caring for cleanliness leads, in the text's view, to seeing the body plainly as something that needs constant upkeep, loosening the obsession with it and with others' bodies. It is about less fixation, not about hating yourself.

Result of cleanliness (śauca), the first niyama.

From contentment, unsurpassed happiness is gained.

Contentment does not mean accepting injustice, abuse or neglect of your needs; you can be content and still seek change.

Meaning today and context

The happiness that comes from being at peace with what you have beats the passing thrill of getting more. Contentment is not giving up on effort; it is not making your peace hostage to the next thing.

sthirasukhamāsanam ||

Posture is steady and comfortable.

Meaning today and context

Patañjali's whole definition of posture is 'steady and easy'. The aim is not a difficult shape but a way of sitting you can hold without strain, so the mind can settle.

Meaning today and context

A posture settles not by forcing harder but by letting go of strain, and by resting the attention in something vast and open. Ease, not effort, is the sign of progress.

How posture is perfected: by relaxing effort and by letting the mind merge with the boundless. The second phrase is read in more than one way, as absorption in the infinite or in the endless serpent (Ananta) that holds the earth.

Breath work comes after the body is settled, not before. It is about bringing the usually unconscious rhythm of breathing under gentle, aware regulation.

Breath can be worked with on the out-breath, the in-breath, or the pause, and is refined by attention to where it is felt, how long it lasts and how many rounds. Over time and with care, it naturally becomes long and fine.

Pratyāhāra is when the senses, disengaged from their objects, as it were imitate the nature of the mind.

Withdrawing the senses is a meditative practice, not advice to cut off people, food or daily life.
