Samādhi Pāda

1.1 Patanjali

atha yogānuśāsanam ||

Now, the instruction in yoga.

Meaning today and context

'Now' marks a beginning: the teaching starts when one is ready to listen and practise. Yoga is presented as a discipline to be learnt and lived, not just an idea.

The opening sūtra of the Yoga Sutras: Patañjali announces the subject of the work, the teaching of yoga.

1.2 Patanjali

yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ ||

Yoga is the stilling of the movements (vṛttis) of the mind.

Meaning today and context

Yoga, in Patañjali's sense, is not first of all about the body; it is about the mind settling. When the constant churning of thought, memory and reaction quiets down, something clearer becomes possible.

The definition of yoga, on which the whole work rests: yoga is the stilling of the movements of the mind.

1.3 Patanjali

tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam ||

Then the seer abides in its own true form.

Meaning today and context

Beneath the noise of thoughts there is the one who is aware of them. When the noise settles, you rest as that awareness, instead of being swept along by every passing thought.

The result of 1.2: when the mind's movements are stilled, the seer rests in its own nature.

1.4 Patanjali

vṛttisārūpyamitaratra ||

At other times, [the seer] takes on the form of the movements [of the mind].

Meaning today and context

Most of the time we identify with whatever is passing through the mind: 'I am angry', 'I am a failure'. Seeing that these are movements of the mind, not who you are, already loosens their grip.

The contrast to 1.3: at other times, the seer seems to take on the form of the mind's movements.

1.5 Patanjali

vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ ||

The movements [of the mind] are of five kinds, afflicting or non-afflicting.

Meaning today and context

Not every thought is a problem. Some movements of the mind bind and hurt, others help; the work is to notice which is which, not to hate thinking.

The start of the account of the vṛttis (1.5–1.11): there are five kinds, each of which may be afflicting or not.

1.6 Patanjali

pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtayaḥ ||

[They are] valid knowledge, error, conceptualisation, sleep and memory.

Meaning today and context

Almost everything the mind does falls into a few kinds: knowing correctly, getting it wrong, imagining with words, sleeping and remembering. Knowing the kinds helps you observe your own mind.

A list naming the five vṛttis, each defined in the sūtras that follow (1.7–1.11).

1.7 Patanjali

pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni ||

Valid knowledge [comes from] perception, inference and reliable testimony.

Meaning today and context

We know things rightly by seeing for ourselves, by reasoning carefully, and by trusting reliable sources. Checking which of these a belief rests on is a good habit against rumour and self-deception.

Definition of the first vṛtti, pramāṇa (valid knowledge), by its three sources.

1.8 Patanjali

viparyayo mithyājñānamatadrūpapratiṣṭham ||

Error is false knowledge, resting on a form that is not [the thing's] own.

Meaning today and context

Much suffering comes from seeing things as they are not: reading insult into a neutral remark, or a rope as a snake. Pausing to ask 'Is this really so?' is part of yoga.

Definition of the second vṛtti, viparyaya (error).

1.9 Patanjali

śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ ||

Conceptualisation follows from verbal knowledge but is empty of a real object.

Meaning today and context

The mind can build whole worlds from words alone: labels, 'what ifs', stories about the future. Recognising when a thought is only words, with nothing real behind it, can take the sting out of worry.

Definition of the third vṛtti, vikalpa: a notion that follows words but has no real object.

1.10 Patanjali

abhāvapratyayālambanā vṛttirnidrā ||

Sleep is the movement [of the mind] that rests on the experience of absence.

Meaning today and context

Even deep sleep is a state of the mind, not the stillness yoga means. Dullness and blankness are not the same as a clear, quiet mind.

Definition of the fourth vṛtti, sleep: even dreamless sleep is counted as a movement of the mind.

1.11 Patanjali

anubhūtaviṣayāsaṃpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ ||

Memory is the not-letting-slip of an object once experienced.

Meaning today and context

Memory keeps past experiences alive in the mind. That is useful, but replaying old hurts again and again keeps the mind in the past; noticing 'this is a memory' gives some distance.

Definition of the fifth vṛtti, memory.

1.12 Patanjali

abhyāsavairāgyābhyāṃ tannirodhaḥ ||

They are stilled by practice and dispassion.

Meaning today and context

Two things together calm the mind: steady practice that keeps bringing it back, and a gradual letting go of the cravings that pull it away. One without the other rarely works.

The method for 1.2: the mind's movements are stilled by two means, practice and dispassion, explained in 1.13–1.16.

1.13 Patanjali

tatra sthitau yatno'bhyāsaḥ ||

Of these, practice is the effort to remain steady there.

Meaning today and context

Practice is not a heroic one-off effort; it is the repeated, gentle effort to stay steady. Every return to your chosen focus counts.

Definition of abhyāsa (practice), the first of the two means in 1.12.

1.14 Patanjali

sa tu dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārāsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ ||

But it becomes firmly grounded when cultivated for a long time, without interruption, and with devotion.

Meaning today and context

Three things make practice take root: time, continuity and genuine care for what you are doing. Quick results are not promised; steady, respectful practice over months and years is.

Patañjali states the conditions under which practice becomes firm.

1.15 Patanjali

dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṃjñā vairāgyam ||

Dispassion is the awareness of mastery in one who has no thirst for objects, whether seen or heard of [as promised].

Dispassion here is an inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, or to deny yourself food, rest or care.

Meaning today and context

Dispassion is not hating the world; it is being free of the thirst that drives you, both for what is in front of you and for what you have only heard promised. It shows up as a quiet sense of being in charge of your wants, not ruled by them.

Definition of vairāgya (dispassion), the second means in 1.12, in its first, lower form.

1.16 Patanjali

tatparaṃ puruṣakhyāterguṇavaitṛṣṇyam ||

That is higher in which, from the discernment of the Self (puruṣa), there is no thirst even for the guṇas.

Meaning today and context

There is a dispassion that comes from effort, and a deeper one that comes from understanding who you really are. When that becomes clear, the pull of things weakens on its own.

The higher form of dispassion, which follows from knowing the Self (puruṣa).

1.17 Patanjali

vitarkavicārānandāsmitārūpānugamātsaṃprajñātaḥ ||

[Samādhi] with cognition is accompanied by gross reflection, subtle reflection, bliss and the sense of 'I am'.

Deep meditative absorption is described here as the text's goal, not as something to force. Intensive meditation can surface distressing memories or feelings; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under qualified guidance. If distress persists, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Absorption deepens in stages, from focusing on something tangible, to subtler objects, to a quiet joy, to the bare sense of being. The text maps the territory so the practitioner is not confused by it.

The first kind of samādhi, 'with cognition' (saṃprajñāta), and the four stages it passes through.

1.18 Patanjali

virāmapratyayābhyāsapūrvaḥ saṃskāraśeṣo'nyaḥ ||

The other [samādhi] is preceded by practice of the notion of cessation, and only latent impressions remain.

Deep meditative absorption is described here as the text's goal, not as something to force. Intensive meditation can surface distressing memories or feelings; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under qualified guidance. If distress persists, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Beyond focusing on an object, the text describes a stillness where even that focus is let go. It is reached through practice of letting go, not by grasping.

The other kind of samādhi, beyond cognition, where only latent impressions remain.

1.19 Patanjali

bhavapratyayo videhaprakṛtilayānām ||

For the bodiless and those merged in prakṛti, [it] arises from [their mode of] existence.

Meaning today and context

This is a technical note about certain beings in the text's cosmology, not practical guidance; its point is that for ordinary people the path is the one in the next sūtra.

A classification: for certain beings (the bodiless and those merged in nature), such absorption arises from their state of being rather than from practice. Commentators differ on exactly who these are.

1.20 Patanjali

śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām ||

For others, it is preceded by faith, energy, mindfulness, absorption and insight.

Meaning today and context

Inner progress has a sequence: trust that the path is worthwhile, the energy to keep going, remembering your purpose, deepening focus, and finally clear insight. If one of these is weak, strengthen that first.

In contrast to 1.19, for everyone else samādhi comes through five qualities developed in sequence.

1.21 Patanjali

tīvrasaṃvegānāmāsannaḥ ||

For those with intense ardour, it is near.

Intensity means wholehearted commitment, not straining or harming yourself. Pushing too hard in meditation or austerity can backfire; steady and sustainable is better.

Meaning today and context

How wholeheartedly you want something shapes how quickly you move towards it. Sincere, intense commitment matters more than technique alone.

Patañjali adds that the goal is near for those whose urge is intense.

1.22 Patanjali

mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato'pi viśeṣaḥ ||

Even then there is a difference, according to whether [the ardour] is mild, moderate or intense.

Meaning today and context

People move at different speeds, and that is natural. Comparing your progress with others' is less useful than honestly deepening your own commitment.

A refinement of 1.21: even among the ardent, there are degrees.

1.23 Patanjali

īśvarapraṇidhānādvā ||

Or by dedication to Īśvara.

Meaning today and context

For those to whom it speaks, surrendering effort and outcome to Īśvara is offered as another path to a still mind. Patañjali presents it as one option among methods, not as a demand to adopt a belief.

An alternative route ('or') to samādhi: dedication to Īśvara, a special Self described in 1.24–1.26.

1.24 Patanjali

kleśakarmavipākāśayairaparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ ||

Īśvara is a special Self, untouched by afflictions, actions, their fruits and their residues.

Meaning today and context

In the Yoga Sutras, Īśvara is understood as a Self never caught in the afflictions and karmic patterns that bind us. Contemplating such freedom can be a reminder that freedom is possible.

Patañjali defines Īśvara, the object of the dedication named in 1.23.

1.25 Patanjali

tatra niratiśayaṃ sarvajñabījam ||

In him the seed of omniscience is unsurpassed.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge in us comes in degrees; this sūtra points to Īśvara as the limit where it is unsurpassed. For the devout it is a ground of trust; for others, a statement of the text's view.

A further description of Īśvara: in him the seed of all-knowing is unsurpassed.

1.26 Patanjali

pūrveṣāmapi guruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ||

Being unbounded by time, he is the teacher even of the ancients.

Meaning today and context

Every human teacher learnt from someone. The sūtra places the source of that chain in Īśvara, beyond time; for the devout, the inner guide is always available.

Patañjali describes Īśvara as the first teacher, beyond time.

1.27 Patanjali

tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ||

The word expressing him is the praṇava (oṃ).

Meaning today and context

In this tradition oṃ is the sound that names Īśvara. For those who use it, a single sacred sound can become a simple anchor for attention and devotion.

Continuing the account of Īśvara (1.23–1.29): the word that expresses him is the praṇava, oṃ.

1.28 Patanjali

tajjapastadarthabhāvanam ||

Its repetition [is to be done along with] contemplation of its meaning.

Meaning today and context

Repetition alone can become mechanical. The sūtra pairs chanting with feeling for what it means; the same applies to any mantra or prayer you use.

The practice connected with the praṇava: repeating it while dwelling on its meaning.

1.29 Patanjali

tataḥ pratyakcetanādhigamo'pyantarāyābhāvaśca ||

From that comes realisation of inward consciousness, and the absence of obstacles too.

Meaning today and context

Devoted, attentive repetition turns the mind inward and clears away much of what blocks practice. The obstacles themselves are named next.

The result of the practice in 1.27–1.28: inward awareness and removal of obstacles, which are then listed in 1.30.

1.30 Patanjali

vyādhistyānasaṃśayapramādālasyāviratibhrāntidarśanālabdhabhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni cittavikṣepāste'ntarāyāḥ ||

Illness, dullness, doubt, carelessness, laziness, sensual craving, false perception, failure to reach a stage, and instability [in it]: these distractions of the mind are the obstacles.

Illness and persistent dullness or lack of energy may need medical attention, not just more effort. If low mood lasts or deepens, please see a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

If practice keeps breaking down, you are not uniquely weak; these obstacles are old and well known. Naming which one you face (illness, low energy, doubt, carelessness, plateaus) is the first step to dealing with it.

Patañjali lists the nine obstacles that scatter the mind and interrupt practice.

1.31 Patanjali

A scattered mind shows up in the body and mood too: pain, low spirits, restlessness, uneven breathing. Noticing these signs early is useful; they are messages, not proof that you have failed.

When the mind scatters, choose one thing and keep returning to it, rather than jumping from method to method. Simplicity and consistency are themselves the remedy.

maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāṇāṃ sukhaduḥkhapuṇyāpuṇyaviṣayāṇāṃ bhāvanātaścittaprasādanam ||

The mind becomes clear by cultivating friendliness towards the happy, compassion towards the suffering, gladness towards the virtuous, and equanimity towards the unvirtuous.

Equanimity towards wrongdoing means not being consumed by anger; it does not mean tolerating abuse or staying silent about harm. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Much of our inner turmoil comes from how we react to others: envy at their happiness, coldness at their pain, resentment at their goodness, rage at their faults. Meeting each with the fitting attitude keeps your own mind clear.

pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāṃ vā prāṇasya ||

Or by expelling and retaining the breath.

Practise breathing techniques with a qualified teacher; never hold the breath forcibly. Stop if you feel dizzy, breathless or unwell, and consult a doctor first if you have heart, blood-pressure or respiratory conditions or are pregnant.

Meaning today and context

Breath and mind are linked: a slow, gentle out-breath can settle an agitated mind. This is offered as one option among several.

An alternative ('or') way to steady the mind: through regulating the breath.

viṣayavatī vā pravṛttirutpannā manasaḥ sthitinibandhanī ||

Or a sense-related activity, when it arises, binds the mind to steadiness.

Meaning today and context

Giving the mind something concrete to rest on, such as a sensation or a subtle perception, can steady it. Small experiences of focus build confidence to go further. Interpreters differ on exactly what experience is meant.

Another alternative way to steady the mind: through a heightened, absorbing sense-experience.

1.36 Patanjali

viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī ||

Or [a state that is] sorrowless and luminous.

Meaning today and context

Resting attention on an inner sense of light and ease, a place in you untouched by sorrow, can steady the mind. Commentators read the details differently, but the idea of a bright, peaceful inner focus is clear.

Another alternative: an inner perception that is luminous and free of sorrow.

Meaning today and context

Dwelling on someone who is free of craving, a sage or a person you deeply admire, helps your own mind take on some of that calm. We become like what we contemplate.

Another alternative: taking as one's focus a mind free from passion.

svapnanidrājñānālambanaṃ vā ||

Or [the mind is steadied] taking as its support the knowledge from dream and sleep.

Meaning today and context

Even dreams and the restful quality of deep sleep can be material for reflection and focus. It is read in more than one way: as recalling a peaceful dream, or as observing the mind as it moves into sleep.

Another alternative: using the knowledge that comes from dream and sleep as a support.

Meaning today and context

There is no single correct object of meditation. Choose something wholesome that genuinely draws you; a focus you love is easier to return to.

A trained mind can rest on anything, the tiniest detail or the vastest idea. Focus becomes a capacity you can direct, not a matter of luck.

kṣīṇavṛtterabhijātasyeva maṇergrahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatā samāpattiḥ ||

When its movements have dwindled, the mind, like a clear jewel, takes on the colour of whatever it rests on, whether knower, knowing or known: this is absorption (samāpatti).

Deep meditative absorption is described here as the text's goal, not as something to force. Intensive meditation can surface distressing memories or feelings; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under qualified guidance. If distress persists, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A quiet mind is like clear crystal: it fully takes on whatever it rests on, without distortion. Even in daily life, a calm mind sees people and situations more truly.

The definition of samāpatti (absorption), opening the account of the kinds of samādhi (1.41–1.51).

tatra śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṃkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ||

Of these, absorption mixed with the conceptual blending of word, object and knowledge is 'with gross reflection' (savitarka).

Meaning today and context

In early absorption the object is still tangled with its name and our ideas about it. Seeing how much labels colour perception is itself an insight.

The first kind of absorption: savitarka, still mixed with word, meaning and concept.

1.43 Patanjali

smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā ||

When memory is purified, [the mind] as if empty of its own form, with only the object shining forth, is 'beyond gross reflection' (nirvitarka).

Meaning today and context

When labels and associations fall away, you meet a thing as it is, and the sense of yourself as the observer softens. A glimpse of this can happen even in simple, wholehearted attention.

The next kind of absorption: nirvitarka, where memory is purified and only the object shines.

1.44 Patanjali

etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā vyākhyātā ||

By this the [absorptions] with subtle reflection and beyond subtle reflection, having subtle objects, are also explained.

Meaning today and context

This sūtra mainly completes the classification of meditative states; its practical point is that the same deepening happens with subtler objects.

A technical extension: the same two kinds, 'with' and 'beyond' reflection, apply to subtle objects (savicāra, nirvicāra).

1.45 Patanjali

sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṃ cāliṅgaparyavasānam ||

And subtlety of object extends up to the unmarked [unmanifest nature].

Meaning today and context

This is cosmological taxonomy: subtle objects go all the way back to unmanifest nature, the source of all forms in the text's view.

A technical note on how far 'subtle objects' extend: up to unmanifest nature (aliṅga).

1.46 Patanjali

tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ||

These alone are samādhi with seed.

Meaning today and context

Even deep absorption on an object still holds a 'seed', a support and a latent pull. The text reminds the practitioner that these states are not the end.

A summary: the four absorptions just described (1.42–1.44) are samādhi 'with seed'.

1.47 Patanjali

nirvicāravaiśāradye'dhyātmaprasādaḥ ||

With proficiency in [absorption] beyond subtle reflection, there is clarity of the inner self.

Meaning today and context

Long, deepening practice leads to a settled inner clarity, a mind like still, clear water.

The fruit of mastery in the subtlest absorption: inner clarity.

1.48 Patanjali

ṛtaṃbharā tatra prajñā ||

There, insight is truth-bearing.

This describes an ideal state. No one's claim to 'truth-bearing insight' should be used to demand unquestioning obedience, money or the abandonment of your own judgement.

Meaning today and context

When the mind is truly clear, understanding arises that is not bent by fear or wishful thinking. This is the text's ideal, not a guarantee about anyone's opinions.

The kind of insight that arises in that inner clarity (1.47).

Its object differs from that of knowledge from testimony and inference, because it concerns the particular.

Meaning today and context

Knowing about something from books or reasoning is general; direct insight grasps the thing itself. Reading about calm is different from being calm.

A clarification of 1.48: this insight differs in scope from knowledge gained by hearing or inference.

tajjaḥ saṃskāro'nyasaṃskārapratibandhī ||

The impression born of it obstructs other impressions.

Meaning today and context

Old patterns are replaced, not just resisted: a deep, clear experience leaves an impression that weakens the pull of older habits. Good conditioning can crowd out harmful conditioning.

The effect of this insight on the mind's conditioning: its impression blocks other impressions.

When even that is stilled, everything being stilled, there is seedless samādhi.

Deep meditative absorption is described here as the text's goal, not as something to force. Intensive meditation can surface distressing memories or feelings; people with trauma, psychosis or severe depression should practise under qualified guidance. If distress persists, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The path ends by letting go even of its best supports. The highest stillness, in this text's view, is not holding on to any experience, even a spiritual one.

The close of the first pāda: when even that impression is stilled, everything is stilled, and there is samādhi without seed.
