Chapter 2

2.1 Dattatreya

bālasya vā viṣayabhogaratasya vāpi mūrkhasya sevakajanasya gṛhasthitasya | etadguroḥ kimapi naiva na cintanīyaṃ ratnaṃ kathaṃ tyajati ko'pyaśucau praviṣṭam ||

Whether the teacher is a child, someone given to sense pleasures, a fool, a servant or a householder, nothing of what such a guru says should be ignored. Does anyone throw away a gem because it has fallen into filth?

Valuing a teaching from anyone does not mean trusting or obeying a teacher who harms or exploits; for abuse or danger, 112 / 181.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom can come from unlikely people. Judge a lesson by its truth, not by the status, age or habits of the one who gives it.

Dattatreya opens the second chapter: the guru's teaching is to be valued whoever the teacher may outwardly seem to be.

2.2 Dattatreya

naivātra kāvyaguṇa eva tu cintanīyo grāhyaḥ paraṃ guṇavatā khalu sāra eva | sindūracitrarahitā bhuvi rūpaśūnyā pāraṃ na kiṃ nayati nauriha gantukāmān ||

Here one should not weigh poetic merit; a person of discernment takes only the essence. A boat with no vermilion paint and no beauty at all, does it not still carry across those who wish to cross?

Meaning today and context

Don't dismiss something useful because it is plainly packaged. What matters in a teaching, a tool or a person is whether it gets you across.

Dattatreya asks the listener to look past the style of his words to their substance.

2.3 Dattatreya

prayatnena vinā yena niścalena calācalam | grastaṃ svabhāvataḥ śāntaṃ caitanyaṃ gaganopamam ||

That consciousness which, without effort and itself unmoving, holds within it all that moves and stays still, is by its very nature peaceful, like the sky.

Meaning today and context

Beneath all the movement of thoughts and events there is an awareness that does not itself move. Resting there, peace is not something to manufacture; it is already its nature.

Dattatreya describes consciousness, the Self, as still and effortless, holding all that moves and does not move.

2.4 Dattatreya

ayatnāccālayedyastu ekameva carācaram | sarvagaṃ tatkathaṃ bhinnamadvaitaṃ vartate mama ||

That which, without effort, sets in motion this one whole world of moving and unmoving things, and pervades everything, how could it be separate? For me, non-duality alone is.

Meaning today and context

The sense of being a small, separate piece cut off from everything is what this verse questions. Feeling part of a larger whole can ease loneliness and the pressure of carrying everything alone.

Dattatreya continues: the one consciousness that moves the whole world cannot be divided from him.

2.5 Dattatreya

ahameva paraṃ yasmātsārātsārataraṃ śivam | gamāgamavinirmuktaṃ nirvikalpaṃ nirākulam ||

For I alone am the Supreme, the auspicious one, the essence of all essences, free from coming and going, beyond mental constructs, untroubled.

Meaning today and context

Underneath our worries and changing roles, the text points to something in us that does not come and go and is not disturbed. Remembering this can make daily agitation feel less total.

Dattatreya declares his identity with the supreme, auspicious reality.

2.6 Dattatreya

sarvāvayavanirmuktaṃ tathāhaṃ tridaśārcitam | saṃpūrṇatvānna gṛhṇāmi vibhāgaṃ tridaśādikam ||

I am likewise free from all parts, the one the gods worship. Because I am complete, I do not take up any division such as gods and other beings.

Meaning today and context

When we feel whole, we stop sorting ourselves and others into higher and lower. Completeness, not comparison, is the Self's nature.

Dattatreya says the Self has no parts and, being whole, does not take on the divisions of gods and the rest.

2.7 Dattatreya

pramādena na sandehaḥ kiṃ kariṣyāmi vṛttimān | utpadyante vilīyante budbudāśca yathā jale ||

Through heedlessness they arise, no doubt of it; what shall I, who seem to have these movements of mind, do about them? They rise and dissolve like bubbles in water.

Meaning today and context

Thoughts and moods rise and pass on their own, like bubbles. You do not have to fight each one; noticing that they come and go loosens their hold.

Dattatreya speaks of the mind's movements (vṛttis): they come and go like bubbles, and the Self need not do anything about them.

2.8 Dattatreya

mahadādīni bhūtāni samāpyaivaṃ sadaiva hi | mṛdudravyeṣu tīkṣṇeṣu guḍeṣu kaṭukeṣu ca ||

Thus the great principle and the other elements are always pervaded by it, just as (water is present) in soft substances, in sharp ones, in jaggery and in bitter things,

Meaning today and context

Read with the next verse: very different things can share one underlying nature. Differences on the surface need not hide what is common beneath.

Dattatreya begins a simile that runs into the next verse: the elements are all pervaded by the one reality, as water is present in every kind of substance.

2.9 Dattatreya

kaṭutvaṃ caiva śaityatvaṃ mṛdutvaṃ ca yathā jale | prakṛtiḥ puruṣastadvadabhinnaṃ pratibhāti me ||

Just as bitterness, coolness and softness all belong to water, so prakṛti (nature) and puruṣa (spirit) appear to me as undivided.

Meaning today and context

The split between 'me in here' and 'the world out there' is not as hard as it feels. Seeing one nature in both can soften the sense of being at war with life.

Completing the simile from 2.8: as one water appears bitter, cool or soft in different things, so matter and spirit appear to him as not different.

2.10 Dattatreya

sarvākhyārahitaṃ yadyatsūkṣmātsūkṣmataraṃ param | manobuddhīndriyātītamakalaṅkaṃ jagatpatim ||

That which is free of every name, subtler than the subtle, supreme, beyond mind, intellect and senses, spotless, the lord of the world,

Meaning today and context

What we are at the deepest level cannot be captured by labels, including the labels others put on us or we put on ourselves.

Dattatreya begins a description, continued in 2.11, of the supreme reality beyond names and faculties.

2.11 Dattatreya

īdṛśaṃ sahajaṃ yatra ahaṃ tatra kathaṃ bhavet | tvameva hi kathaṃ tatra kathaṃ tatra carācaram ||

Where such a natural state is, how can there be an 'I'? How can there be a 'you'? How can there be the moving and the unmoving world?

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering is the friction of 'me versus you'. In moments of deep stillness that line fades; this does not erase people, but it can soften the hard edges of ego.

Completing 2.10: where that natural reality is, the distinctions of 'I', 'you' and the world fall away.

2.12 Dattatreya

gaganopamaṃ tu yatproktaṃ tadeva gaganopamam | caitanyaṃ doṣahīnaṃ ca sarvajñaṃ pūrṇameva ca ||

What has been called 'like the sky' is that alone which is like the sky: consciousness, free of fault, all-knowing and full.

Meaning today and context

Like the sky, awareness is not stained by the clouds that pass through it. Mistakes and moods pass; the space in which they appear is not damaged.

Dattatreya explains what he means when he calls the Self 'like the sky'.

2.13 Dattatreya

pṛthivyāṃ caritaṃ naiva mārutena ca vāhitam | vāriṇā pihitaṃ naiva tejomadhye vyavasthitam ||

It does not move upon the earth, it is not carried by the wind, it is not covered by water; it abides in the midst of light.

Meaning today and context

Circumstances push and pull the body and mind, but the awareness that knows them is not carried away. This can be a steady point in hard times.

Dattatreya says the Self is untouched by the elements of earth, wind and water. The last line, 'established in the midst of fire (or light)', is read here as its own light.

2.14 Dattatreya

Space is pervaded by it, but it is pervaded by nothing. It stands outside and within, undivided and without a break.

Meaning today and context

The awareness you are is not boxed inside the body; inner and outer both appear in it. This can soften the feeling of being trapped or small.

Dattatreya continues describing the Self as pervading even space.

2.15 Dattatreya

sūkṣmatvāttadadṛśyatvānnirguṇatvācca yogibhiḥ | ālambanādi yatproktaṃ kramādālambanaṃ bhavet ||

Because it is subtle, invisible and without qualities, the yogis have taught the use of supports for the mind; one should take up a support step by step.

Meditation methods: practise with a qualified teacher; intensive meditation can surface distressing experiences; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Meditation usually starts with something to hold on to, like the breath, a word or an image. Using such a support is not a failure; it is how one goes step by step.

Dattatreya explains why yogis teach supports for meditation: the Self is too subtle to grasp directly at first.

2.16 Dattatreya

satatā'bhyāsayuktastu nirālambo yadā bhavet | tallayāllīyate nāntarguṇadoṣavivarjitaḥ ||

One who is joined to constant practice, when he becomes free of any support, dissolves through absorption in That, free of merits and faults within.

Meditation methods: practise with a qualified teacher; intensive meditation can surface distressing experiences; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Steady, patient practice matters more than technique. Over time even the method can fall away, leaving simple quiet.

Continuing from 2.15: with steady practice the support itself is dropped and the meditator dissolves into That.

2.17 Dattatreya

viṣaviśvasya raudrasya mohamūrcchāpradasya ca | ekameva vināśāya hyamoghaṃ sahajāmṛtam ||

For destroying the poison of this fierce world, which brings delusion and fainting, there is one unfailing remedy: the innate nectar (of the Self).

For someone in despair or crisis, the verse is not a substitute for help; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When life feels poisonous and confusing, the remedy pointed to here is not something added from outside but a return to what you already are.

Dattatreya names the one remedy for the poison of worldly existence.

2.18 Dattatreya

bhāvagamyaṃ nirākāraṃ sākāraṃ dṛṣṭigocaram | bhāvābhāvavinirmuktamantarālaṃ taducyate ||

The formless is reached through inner feeling; what has form is within the range of sight. What is free of both being and non-being is called the 'in-between'.

Meaning today and context

Some things we see, some we only feel; the deepest truth here is neither an object nor an absence. It is approached in the quiet between thoughts.

Dattatreya distinguishes the formless known by inner feeling, the formed known by sight, and what lies beyond both.

2.19 Dattatreya

bāhyabhāvaṃ bhavedviśvamantaḥ prakṛtirucyate | antarādantaraṃ jñeyaṃ nārikelaphalāmbuvat ||

The outer appearance is the world; the inner is called prakṛti (nature). Know what is more inward than the inner, like the water within a coconut.

Meaning today and context

Beneath the outer world and beneath our inner moods lies something more intimate still, as the sweet water lies inside the hard shell. It takes going inward to find it.

Dattatreya uses the image of a coconut: outer shell, inner flesh, and the water at the centre.

2.20 Dattatreya

bhrāntijñānaṃ sthitaṃ bāhyaṃ samyagjñānaṃ ca madhyagam | madhyānmadhyataraṃ jñeyaṃ nārikelaphalāmbuvat ||

Mistaken knowledge lies outside; right knowledge is in the middle. Know what is more central than the middle, like the water within a coconut.

Meaning today and context

Correcting wrong ideas is a step, but even right ideas are not the end. The text points past all ideas to the awareness that knows them.

Dattatreya repeats the coconut image for kinds of knowledge.

2.21 Dattatreya

paurṇamāsyāṃ yathā candra eka evātinirmalaḥ | tena tatsadṛśaṃ paśyeddvidhādṛṣṭirviparyayaḥ ||

As on the full-moon night the moon is one alone and utterly clear, so one should see That as like it. Seeing double is an error.

Meaning today and context

Like seeing two moons through a blurred eye, many of our divisions come from how we look. A clear mind sees more unity than conflict.

Dattatreya compares the one reality to the full moon and calls seeing two an error.

2.22 Dattatreya

anenaiva prakāreṇa buddhibhedo na sarvagaḥ | dātā ca dhīratāmeti gīyate nāmakoṭibhiḥ ||

In just this way, division of understanding does not reach the all-pervading. The giver attains steadiness and is praised by millions of names.

Meaning today and context

Divided thinking does not change the wholeness of what is real. Those who share understanding freely grow steady themselves.

An obscure verse: Dattatreya appears to say that, seen this way, divided understanding does not touch the all-pervading, and that one who gives (this knowledge) becomes steady. The reading is uncertain.

2.23 Dattatreya

guruprajñāprasādena mūrkho vā yadi paṇḍitaḥ | yastu saṃbudhyate tattvaṃ virakto bhavasāgarāt ||

By the grace of the guru's wisdom, whether one is a fool or a scholar, whoever awakens to the truth becomes free of attachment to the ocean of worldly existence.

Seeking a guru does not mean surrendering money, safety or judgement to anyone; for exploitation or abuse, 112 / 181.

Meaning today and context

You do not need to be learned to understand what matters most. Openness to a good teacher matters more than degrees.

Dattatreya says awakening comes by the guru's grace, regardless of learning.

2.24 Dattatreya

rāgadveṣavinirmuktaḥ sarvabhūtahite rataḥ | dṛḍhabodhaśca dhīraśca sa gacchetparamaṃ padam ||

Free from attachment and aversion, delighting in the welfare of all beings, firm in understanding and steady: such a person reaches the highest state.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here is not withdrawal; it goes with caring for everyone's good. Letting go of likes and grudges and working for others' welfare is a practical way to live it.

Dattatreya describes the one who reaches the highest state.

2.25 Dattatreya

ghaṭe bhinne ghaṭākāśa ākāśe līyate yathā | dehābhāve tathā yogī svarūpe paramātmani ||

When a pot is broken, the space within it merges into space; so too, when the body is gone, the yogi merges into his own nature, the supreme Self.

When someone is grieving or thinking about death, the verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; acknowledge the loss; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The pot image says the space was never really separate; only the walls made it seem so. Many find comfort in this when thinking about their own death, as a sign that what we are is not lost.

Dattatreya gives the image of pot-space and space for the yogi at the end of the body.

2.26 Dattatreya

ukteyaṃ karmayuktānāṃ matiryānte'pi sā gatiḥ | na coktā yogayuktānāṃ matiryānte'pi sā gatiḥ ||

For those bound up in ritual action it is said: whatever their mind is at the end, that is their destination. For those joined in yoga it is not said that whatever their mind at the end, that is their destination.

When someone is grieving or thinking about death, the verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse frees the realised from fear about the 'last thought'. For anyone, it suggests that what we are is not decided by a single anxious moment.

Dattatreya contrasts the teaching that one's final thought decides one's next state, which is said for ritual actors, with the yogi, for whom it is not said.

2.27 Dattatreya

yā gatiḥ karmayuktānāṃ sā ca vāgindriyādvadet | yogināṃ yā gatiḥ kvāpi hyakathyā bhavatorjitā ||

The destination of those bound to ritual action can be told by the faculty of speech; but the destination of yogis can nowhere be told; it is exalted beyond words.

Meaning today and context

Some of life's deepest realities cannot be captured in descriptions; that is not a reason to doubt them, only to approach them with humility.

Continuing 2.26: the destiny of ritual actors can be described in words, that of yogis cannot.

2.28 Dattatreya

evaṃ jñātvā tvamuṃ mārgaṃ yogināṃ naiva kalpitam | vikalpavarjanaṃ teṣāṃ svayaṃ siddhiḥ pravartate ||

Knowing this, (understand that) this path of the yogis is not something constructed. When they give up mental constructs, perfection comes about of its own accord.

Meaning today and context

Much of our struggle comes from mental pictures of how things should be. When the mind stops building them, ease often arrives on its own.

Dattatreya concludes that the yogi's path is not a fixed construction; when mental constructs drop, fulfilment comes by itself.

2.29 Dattatreya

tīrthe vāntyajagehe vā yatra kutra mṛto'pi vā | na yogī paśyate garbhaṃ pare brahmaṇi līyate ||

Whether at a holy pilgrimage place or in the house of an outcaste, wherever he may die, the yogi does not see a womb again; he dissolves into the supreme Brahman.

'Outcaste' (antyaja) reflects the social order of its time; the verse denies that place or birth matters, and must never be used to rank or exclude anyone. On death: the verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What matters is the state of understanding, not outer conditions like place or social standing. No place is too low for the truth.

Dattatreya says that for the realised yogi the place of death makes no difference.

2.30 Dattatreya

sahajamajamacintyaṃ yastu paśyetsvarūpaṃ ghaṭati yadi yatheṣṭaṃ lipyate naiva doṣaiḥ | sakṛdapi tadabhāvātkarma kiṃcinnakuryāttadapi na ca vibaddhaḥ saṃyamī vā tapasvī ||

One who sees his own nature, innate, unborn and beyond thought, is not stained by faults even if he acts as he pleases. And if, because there is no doer, he does no action at all even once, he is not bound by that either: he is the true self-restrained one, the true ascetic.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment. 'Acting as he pleases' is never a justification for harming anyone.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics. For us, the point is that freedom is inner: action done without the sense of 'I am the doer' does not weigh on us.

Dattatreya describes the freedom of one who sees his innate, unborn nature: neither doing nor not doing binds him.

2.31 Dattatreya

nirāmayaṃ niṣpratimaṃ nirākṛtiṃ nirāśrayaṃ nirvapuṣaṃ nirāśiṣam | nirdvandvanirmohamaluptaśaktikaṃ tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Free of disease, beyond comparison, without form, without support, without body, without desire, beyond the pairs of opposites, free of delusion, of undiminished power: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Whatever happens to body and circumstance, the text points to a Self that is not sick, not lacking, not torn between opposites. Remembering this can be a quiet strength, alongside caring for body and life.

Dattatreya begins a series of verses with the refrain 'he reaches that Lord, the eternal Self', describing what the Self is free of.

2.32 Dattatreya

vedo na dīkṣā na ca muṇḍanakriyā gururna śiṣyo na ca yantrasampadaḥ | mudrādikaṃ cāpi na yatra bhāsate tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Where there is no Veda, no initiation, no rite of shaving the head, no guru, no disciple, no array of yantras, where even mudrās and the like do not appear: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Forms and practices are means, not the goal. This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics or practice; but it reminds us not to mistake religious externals for the truth they point to.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says the Self is beyond all religious forms: scripture, initiation, guru and disciple, ritual tools.

2.33 Dattatreya

na śāmbhavaṃ śāktikamānavaṃ na vā piṇḍaṃ ca rūpaṃ ca padādikaṃ na vā | ārambhaniṣpattighaṭādikaṃ ca no tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Where there is no Śāmbhava, Śākta or Mānava way, no meditation on the body-centre, on form, on the word and so on, and no stages of beginning, the vessel, completion and the rest: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Systems and stages of practice are maps, not the territory. They can help, but the Self they aim at is not one more stage to collect.

Dattatreya names specific yogic and tantric systems as not found in the Self: the Śāmbhava, Śākta and Āṇava (here 'Mānava') ways, the meditations on piṇḍa, pada and rūpa, and the haṭha-yoga stages of ārambha, ghaṭa and niṣpatti.

2.34 Dattatreya

yasya svarūpātsacarācaraṃ jagadutpadyate tiṣṭhati līyate'pi vā | payovikārādiva phenabudbudāstamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

From whose very nature this world of moving and unmoving things arises, stands and dissolves, like foam and bubbles that are changes of water: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

Meaning today and context

Events come and go like foam on water, but the water remains. Seeing changes as surface movements of something steady makes them easier to bear.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says the whole world arises, stays and dissolves in the Self like foam and bubbles in water.

2.35 Dattatreya

nāsānirodho na ca dṛṣṭirāsanaṃ bodho'pyabodho'pi na yatra bhāsate | nāḍīpracāro'pi na yatra kiñcittamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Where there is no restraint of breath at the nose, no fixed gaze, no posture, where neither knowing nor not-knowing appears, where there is no movement at all in the subtle channels: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

Breath and posture: practise only with a qualified teacher; not medical advice; never hold the breath forcibly. These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Techniques of body and breath may help the mind settle, but they are not the Self. This describes one already free, not a licence to drop practice.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says breath control, gaze, posture and the movement of energy in the channels have no place in the Self.

2.36 Dattatreya

nānātvamekatvamubhatvamanyatā aṇutvadīrghatvamahattvaśūnyatā | mānatvameyatvasamatvavarjitaṃ tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Free of manyness and oneness, of being both, of otherness, of smallness, length, greatness and emptiness, free of being the measure, the measured, or the same: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

Meaning today and context

Even ideas like 'one' or 'empty' are concepts. The verse invites us to hold our ideas about the deepest truth lightly.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says no category of number, size or measure applies to the Self.

2.37 Dattatreya

susaṃyamī vā yadi vā na saṃyamī susaṃgrahī vā yadi vā na saṃgrahī | niṣkarmako vā yadi vā sakarmakastamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Whether well restrained or not restrained, whether one gathers possessions or does not, whether without action or engaged in action: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop discipline or ethics. It does say that realisation is not reserved for monks: a householder with work and possessions is not excluded.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya says outward discipline or its lack does not decide who reaches the Self.

2.38 Dattatreya

mano na buddhirna śarīramindriyaṃ tanmātrabhūtāni na bhūtapañcakam | ahaṃkṛtiścāpi viyatsvarūpakaṃ tamīśamātmānamupaiti śāśvatam ||

Not the mind, not the intellect, not the body, not a sense; not the subtle elements, not the five gross elements; not even the ego; its nature is like the sky: that Lord, the eternal Self, he reaches.

Not a reason to neglect the body or treatment; never to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth as a denial of the body's worth; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

You are not your mood, your thoughts or your body's condition; you are the awareness that knows them. This can give a steadier sense of self, without neglecting body or mind.

In the refrain series, Dattatreya lists what the Self is not: mind, intellect, body, senses, elements, ego.

2.39 Dattatreya

vidhau nirodhe paramātmatāṃ gate na yoginaścetasi bhedavarjite | śaucaṃ na vāśaucamaliṅgabhāvanā sarvaṃ vidheyaṃ yadi vā niṣidhyate ||

When injunction and restraint have become the supreme Self, in the yogi's mind, free of difference, there is neither purity nor impurity, nor any thought of marks; all is the same, whether enjoined or forbidden.

These verses describe the state of one already free; they are not a licence to drop ethics, practice, or care for one's body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics. For us it can loosen anxiety about ritual purity and outward marks, which are not the heart of spiritual life.

Dattatreya says that for the yogi whose mind is free of difference, rules and prohibitions, purity and impurity no longer apply.

2.40 Dattatreya

mano vaco yatra na śaktamīrituṃ nūnaṃ kathaṃ tatra gurūpadeśatā | imāṃ kathāmuktavato gurostadyuktasya tattvaṃ hi samaṃ prakāśate ||

Where mind and speech cannot reach, how indeed can there be a guru's teaching there? To the guru who has spoken this account, and to one who is united with it, the truth shines forth the same.

Meaning today and context

Words can only point; the real understanding happens in us. A good teacher does not hand over truth but helps us see what is equally present in both.

Dattatreya closes chapter 2: where speech and mind fail, even teaching falls silent, yet the truth shines the same for teacher and listener.
