Chapter 1

1.1 Dattatreya

īśvarānugrahādeva puṃsāmadvaitavāsanā | mahadbhayaparitrāṇādviprāṇāmupajāyate ||

Only by the grace of the Lord does the inclination toward non-duality arise in people, in the wise, as protection from the great fear.

'Vipra' here means the wise or the seeker, by understanding and conduct, never by birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

The pull toward seeing life as one whole, rather than as me against everything, is not something we manufacture; it comes as grace. When it comes, it eases the deepest fear we carry.

Opening verse of the Avadhūta Gītā: Dattātreya says the inclination toward non-duality is itself a gift of grace.

1.2 Dattatreya

yenedaṃ pūritaṃ sarvamātmanaivātmanātmani | nirākāraṃ kathaṃ vande hyabhinnaṃ śivamavyayam ||

That by which all this is filled, the Self alone, by the Self, in the Self: how can I bow to that formless one, undivided, auspicious, imperishable?

Not a teaching against prayer or worship; it describes the vision of oneness that such devotion can ripen into.

Meaning today and context

Bowing needs two: one who bows and one bowed to. The verse points to a reality so close that there is no distance to bow across. It is a way of saying the sacred is not far away from you.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta asks how he can bow to the formless Self that fills everything and is not separate from him.

1.3 Dattatreya

pañcabhūtātmakaṃ viśvaṃ marīcijalasannibham | kasyāpyaho namaskuryāmahameko nirañjanaḥ ||

This universe made of the five elements is like the water of a mirage. To whom, then, oh, should I bow? I am the One, stainless.

Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

A mirage looks like water but cannot quench thirst. The things we chase as if they would finally complete us are like that; what we really are is untouched by them.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta calls the world of five elements a mirage and declares himself the one stainless Self.

1.4 Dattatreya

ātmaiva kevalaṃ sarvaṃ bhedābhedo na vidyate | asti nāsti kathaṃ brūyāṃ vismayaḥ pratibhāti me ||

The Self alone is all. Neither difference nor non-difference exists. How can I say 'it is' or 'it is not'? Wonder shines in me.

Meaning today and context

Some truths are too large for our yes-or-no categories. The right response to them is not a better argument but wonder.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says the Self alone is everything, so even 'is' and 'is not' fail, and he is left in wonder.

1.5 Dattatreya

vedāntasārasarvasvaṃ jñānaṃ vijñānameva ca | ahamātmā nirākāraḥ sarvavyāpī svabhāvataḥ ||

The whole essence of Vedānta, knowledge and realisation itself, is this: I am the Self, formless, all-pervading by nature.

Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Underneath the roles, moods and labels you carry, there is an awareness that is not limited to any of them. Recognising that is the heart of this teaching, and it can give a steadier sense of who you are.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta sums up the whole of Vedānta in one realisation.

1.6 Dattatreya

The God who is the self of all, without parts, like the sky, naturally spotless and pure: he is this very one. There is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

What people seek as God is not somewhere else; the verse says it is the very awareness in you. This does not make you proud; it makes everyone sacred.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta identifies the God who is the self of all with this very Self.

1.7 Dattatreya

ahamevāvyayo'nantaḥ śuddhavijñānavigrahaḥ | sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ na jānāmi kathaṃ kasyāpi vartate ||

I alone am the imperishable, the infinite, whose form is pure awareness. I do not know pleasure or pain; how could they belong to anyone?

Not a reason to ignore real pain, illness or distress; get help and treatment. For persistent sadness, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Pleasure and pain come and go, and something in you notices them coming and going. Resting as that noticing awareness does not stop feelings, but they stop defining you.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta speaks as pure awareness, untouched by pleasure and pain.

1.8 Dattatreya

na mānasaṃ karma śubhāśubhaṃ me na kāyikaṃ karma śubhāśubhaṃ me | na vācikaṃ karma śubhāśubhaṃ me jñānāmṛtaṃ śuddhamatīndriyo'ham ||

No action of the mind, good or bad, is mine; no action of the body, good or bad, is mine; no action of speech, good or bad, is mine. I am the nectar of knowledge, pure, beyond the senses.

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, care for others, or responsibility for one's actions. Where you have harmed someone, making amends still matters.

Meaning today and context

Guilt and pride both cling to the idea 'I am the doer'. The verse points to an awareness that is not stained by past deeds, which can free a person from being crushed by guilt. It describes the state of one already free, not a licence to act carelessly.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta declares that no good or bad action of mind, body or speech belongs to him; this is the first appearance of the refrain 'I am the nectar of knowledge'.

1.9 Dattatreya

mano vai gaganākāraṃ mano vai sarvatomukham | mano'tītaṃ manaḥ sarvaṃ na manaḥ paramārthataḥ ||

The mind indeed is like the sky; the mind indeed faces every direction. The mind is the past; the mind is all. Yet in the highest truth there is no mind.

Meaning today and context

Our whole world, including our memories and worries, is shaped by the mind. Seeing that the mind is not the final reality loosens its grip: thoughts are weather in the sky, not the sky itself.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta turns to the mind: it seems vast and to be everything, yet in the highest truth there is no mind.

1.10 Dattatreya

ahamekamidaṃ sarvaṃ vyomātītaṃ nirantaram | paśyāmi kathamātmānaṃ pratyakṣaṃ vā tirohitam ||

I am the One; all this is me, beyond the sky, without a break. How can I see myself as something visible, or as something hidden?

Meaning today and context

You cannot find awareness the way you find your keys, because it is what is doing the looking. Seeking it as an object is why it seems hidden.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says he alone is all, unbroken, beyond even the sky, so he cannot see himself as an object either seen or hidden.

1.11 Dattatreya

tvamevamekaṃ hi kathaṃ na budhyase samaṃ hi sarveṣu vimṛṣṭamavyayam | sadodito'si tvamakhaṇḍitaḥ prabho divā ca naktaṃ ca kathaṃ hi manyase ||

You are thus the One; why do you not understand it? Equal in all, clear, imperishable. You are ever-risen, undivided, O mighty one; how can you think of day and night?

Meaning today and context

Like the sun, which never actually sets, the awareness you are does not go through good days and bad days; only what it lights up does. That can be a quiet comfort on a dark day.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta addresses the listener directly: you are this One; why do you not see it?

1.12 Dattatreya

ātmānaṃ satataṃ viddhi sarvatraikaṃ nirantaram | ahaṃ dhyātā paraṃ dhyeyamakhaṇḍaṃ khaṇḍyate katham ||

Know the Self always as one everywhere, without a break. 'I am the meditator, the Supreme is what I meditate on': how can the undivided be divided?

Not advice to give up meditation practice; it describes where practice ends, not where a beginner starts.

Meaning today and context

Meditation often starts as 'me trying to reach something'. The verse hints at where it leads: to resting as what you already are, without the strain of reaching.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener to know the Self as one and unbroken, and asks how the undivided can be split into meditator and meditated.

1.13 Dattatreya

You were not born, you have not died; you have never had a body. 'All is Brahman': this, scripture declares in many ways.

Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416. Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Fear of death clings to the body and its story. The verse points to an awareness that was never born and does not end, which can soften the dread of death without denying that life and the body matter.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he was never born, never dies and never had a body, citing scripture that all is Brahman.

1.14 Dattatreya

You are that Shiva, outside and inside, everywhere and always. Why then do you run here and there, deluded, like a restless ghost?

Meaning today and context

We rush from one thing to the next looking for what would finally settle us, like a ghost that cannot rest. What we look for is not out there; stopping to notice that is itself rest.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta reminds the listener that he is Shiva within and without, and asks why he runs about like a ghost.

1.15 Dattatreya

Union and separation exist neither for you nor for me. There is no you, no I, no this world: all is the Self alone.

Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Meeting and parting shape so much of our joy and pain. The verse looks beneath them to a oneness that is never really separated, which some find a consolation in loss.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says union and separation belong neither to the listener nor to himself; all is the Self alone.

1.16 Dattatreya

You do not belong to these five, sound and the rest, nor do they belong to you. You yourself are the supreme reality; why then do you torment yourself?

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from treating what we see, hear and taste as the measure of our worth. You are more than what passes through the senses, so there is less reason to torture yourself.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he is not the five sense objects, and asks why he torments himself.

1.17 Dattatreya

Birth and death are not yours, nor is the mind; nor bondage and liberation, nor good and bad. Why do you weep, dear child? Name and form are neither yours nor mine.

Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse speaks with tenderness, like a parent to a crying child. It does not scold the tears; it reminds you that the deepest part of you is not damaged by what you are going through.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta gently addresses the listener as 'dear child' and asks why he weeps, since birth, death, mind, bondage and freedom are not his.

1.18 Dattatreya

aho citta kathaṃ bhrāntaḥ pradhāvasi piśācavat | abhinnaṃ paśya cātmānaṃ rāgatyāgātsukhī bhava ||

Oh mind, why do you run about deluded, like a ghost? See the Self as undivided, and by giving up attachment, be happy.

Meaning today and context

Talking to your own restless mind, firmly but kindly, is an old practice. Much unhappiness comes from clinging; loosening it brings a happiness that does not depend on getting things.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta now speaks to the mind itself: stop running like a ghost, see the undivided Self, and be happy by letting go of attachment.

1.19 Dattatreya

tvameva tattvaṃ hi vikāravarjitaṃ niṣkampamekaṃ hi vimokṣavigraham | na te ca rāgo hyathavā virāgaḥ kathaṃ hi santapyasi kāmakāmataḥ ||

You are the very reality, free from change, unmoving, one, freedom itself in form. You have neither attachment nor aversion; why then do you torment yourself, wanting what you want?

Meaning today and context

Desire keeps promising that the next thing will complete us. The verse says what you are is already whole, so you can want things without being tortured by wanting.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he is changeless freedom itself, without attachment or aversion, and asks why he burns with desire.

1.20 Dattatreya

vadanti śrutayaḥ sarvāḥ nirguṇaṃ śuddhamavyayam | aśarīraṃ samaṃ tattvaṃ tanmāṃ viddhi na saṃśayaḥ ||

All the scriptures say that reality is without qualities, pure, imperishable, bodiless and equal. Know me to be that; there is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Speaking as the Self, the teacher says that what all the scriptures point to is the same awareness present in every one of us.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says all scriptures describe reality as attributeless, pure and bodiless, and tells the listener to know him as that.

1.21 Dattatreya

sākāramanṛtaṃ viddhi nirākāraṃ nirantaram | etattattvopadeśena na punarbhavasambhavaḥ ||

Know what has form to be unreal, and the formless to be unbroken. By this teaching of the truth there is no more coming into birth.

Not a teaching against worship of God with form; it is about what is changeless, and many paths honour both.

Meaning today and context

Everything with a shape eventually changes and passes. Seeing what does not pass is the freedom this teaching promises.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says what has form is unreal and the formless is unbroken; knowing this ends rebirth.

1.22 Dattatreya

ekameva samaṃ tattvaṃ vadanti hi vipaścitaḥ | rāgatyāgātpunaścittamekānekaṃ na vidyate ||

The wise say that reality is one and equal. And when attachment is given up, the mind no longer finds 'one' or 'many'.

Meaning today and context

Our likes and dislikes divide the world into mine and not mine. When the grip of attachment loosens, the mind becomes quieter and less divided.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta cites the wise: reality is one and equal, and when attachment goes, the mind no longer splits things into one and many.

1.23 Dattatreya

anātmarūpaṃ ca kathaṃ samādhirātmasvarūpaṃ ca kathaṃ samādhiḥ | astīti nāstīti kathaṃ samādhirmokṣasvarūpaṃ yadi sarvamekam ||

How can there be samādhi on what is not the Self? How can there be samādhi on the Self? How can there be samādhi on 'it is' or 'it is not', if everything is one and freedom itself?

Intensive meditation can surface distressing experiences; practise under guidance. This verse is not a reason to drop practice, nor medical advice. Tele-MANAS 14416 if distressed.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual practice can turn into another project for the ego. The verse reminds that freedom is not something produced by a special state; it is already the case. This describes the state of one already free, not a reason to drop practice.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta argues that if all is one and of the nature of freedom, samādhi has no object: neither non-self, nor Self, nor being, nor non-being.

1.24 Dattatreya

You are utterly pure, the equal reality; you are bodiless, unborn, imperishable. How can you think of the Self as 'I know it here' or 'I do not know it'?

Meaning today and context

We worry whether we have 'got it' spiritually. The verse says awareness is not something you can know or fail to know like a fact; it is what you are, before any knowing.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he is pure, bodiless and unborn, and asks how he can think of the Self as 'I know' or 'I do not know'.

1.25 Dattatreya

tattvamasyādivākyena svātmā hi pratipāditaḥ | neti neti śrutirbrūyādanṛtaṃ pāñcabhautikam ||

Through sayings such as 'tat tvam asi', 'That you are', your own Self is taught. Scripture says 'neti neti', 'not this, not this', to what is made of the five elements, which is unreal.

Meaning today and context

Two moves of self-knowledge: setting aside what you are not (body, roles, moods), and recognising what you are. Both are pointers, not insults to the body or the world.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta cites the great Upanishadic sayings: 'That you are' teaches one's own Self, and 'not this, not this' denies the reality of what is made of the five elements.

1.26 Dattatreya

In the Self, by the Self, all is filled by you without a break. Meditator, meditation and mind are not yours; how can you shamelessly go on meditating?

Not a reason to give up meditation or spiritual discipline; for most people practice remains essential.

Meaning today and context

A teasing, almost scolding line: treating your own self as something far away to be meditated on is a kind of forgetfulness. It describes the state of one already free, not advice for a beginner to stop practising.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says everything is filled by the listener's Self, so there is no separate meditator, meditation or mind, and asks how one can unabashedly go on 'meditating'.

1.27 Dattatreya

śivaṃ na jānāmi kathaṃ vadāmi śivaṃ na jānāmi kathaṃ bhajāmi | ahaṃ śivaścetparamārthatattvaṃ samasvarūpaṃ gaganopamaṃ ca ||

I do not know Shiva: how can I speak of him? I do not know Shiva: how can I worship him? For I am Shiva, the highest reality, equal in nature and like the sky.

Not a teaching against worship or devotion; it describes the vision of one who has realised oneness.

Meaning today and context

When the divine is not an object but your own deepest being, words and rituals fall short. The verse is about the end of distance between seeker and sought, not contempt for devotion.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says he cannot speak of or worship Shiva as an object, since he himself is Shiva, the highest reality.

1.28 Dattatreya

nāhaṃ tattvaṃ samaṃ tattvaṃ kalpanāhetuvarjitam | grāhyagrāhakanirmuktaṃ svasaṃvedyaṃ kathaṃ bhavet ||

I am not 'a reality' set apart; reality is equal, free of anything that causes imagining, free of what is grasped and the grasper. How could it become an object known even to itself?

Meaning today and context

The eye cannot see itself. Awareness does not need to be grasped to be real; trying to grasp it only creates another idea.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says reality is beyond imagination and beyond the split of knower and known, so it cannot become an object even of itself.

1.29 Dattatreya

anantarūpaṃ na hi vastu kiṃcittattvasvarūpaṃ na hi vastu kiṃcit | ātmaikarūpaṃ paramārthatattvaṃ na hiṃsako vāpi na cāpyahiṃsā ||

What is of infinite form is not a thing at all; the nature of reality is not a thing at all. The highest reality is the one form of the Self; it is neither one who harms, nor even non-harming.

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, care for others, or responsibility for one's actions. It is never a justification for violence or harming anyone.

Meaning today and context

The Self is not a thing among things, so it cannot be labelled by any action, even a good one. This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says the infinite reality is not a thing at all; the one Self is neither one who harms nor non-harming.

1.30 Dattatreya

viśuddho'si samaṃ tattvaṃ videhamajamavyayam | vibhramaṃ kathamātmārthe vibhrānto'haṃ kathaṃ punaḥ ||

You are utterly pure, the equal reality, bodiless, unborn, imperishable. How can there be confusion about the Self? And how could I ever be confused again?

Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Once you have clearly seen through a trick, it cannot fool you in the same way again. Clarity about who you are can become a steady ground, not a passing mood.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta tells the listener he is pure and unborn, and asks how there can be confusion about the Self, and how he himself could be confused.

1.31 Dattatreya

ghaṭe bhinne ghaṭākāśaṃ sulīnaṃ bhedavarjitam | śivena manasā śuddho na bhedaḥ pratibhāti me ||

When the pot is broken, the space in the pot merges completely, without any difference. With the mind made pure and still, I see no difference at all.

Not for someone freshly grieving as a reason to stop mourning: acknowledge the loss first. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; if you feel hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The space inside a pot was never really separate from the sky. In the same way, the walls we feel between ourselves and others, and between ourselves and life, are thinner than they seem.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta uses the classic image of the pot and the space inside it: when the pot breaks, the space is simply space.

1.32 Dattatreya

na ghaṭo na ghaṭākāśo na jīvo jīvavigrahaḥ | kevalaṃ brahma saṃviddhi vedyavedakavarjitam ||

There is no pot, no space in the pot, no individual soul, no form of an individual. Know only Brahman, free of the known and the knower.

Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Even the picture of a small self merging into a big one is only a picture. The verse invites letting go of every image, even spiritual ones.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta goes further: there is no pot, no pot-space, no individual soul; only Brahman, free of knower and known.

1.33 Dattatreya

sarvatra sarvadā sarvamātmānaṃ satataṃ dhruvam | sarvaṃ śūnyamaśūnyaṃ ca tanmāṃ viddhi na saṃśayaḥ ||

Know me as the Self of all, everywhere, always, constant and steady; as everything, both empty and not empty. There is no doubt.

Meaning today and context

Reality is neither a mere void nor a heap of things; both words fall short. What is steady in you is what is steady everywhere.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta, speaking as the Self, says he is everything, everywhere and always, both empty and not empty.

1.34 Dattatreya

vedā na lokā na surā na yajñā varṇāśramo naiva kulaṃ na jātiḥ | na dhūmamārgo na ca dīptimārgo brahmaikarūpaṃ paramārthatattvam ||

There are no Vedas, no worlds, no gods, no sacrifices; no varṇa or āśrama, no family, no caste; no path of smoke and no path of light. The highest reality is Brahman, one in form.

This describes the state of one already free, not a licence to drop ethics, care for others, or responsibility for one's actions. Nor is it a reason to look down on anyone's faith or practice.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level, the labels that rank and divide people, family, caste, status, do not touch what anyone truly is. This describes the state of one already free, not a call to reject tradition or duties.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says that in the highest reality there are no Vedas, worlds, gods, rituals, varṇa, āśrama, family or caste, and no paths after death.

1.35 Dattatreya

vyāpyavyāpakanirmuktaḥ tvamekaḥ saphalaṃ yadi | pratyakṣaṃ cāparokṣaṃ ca hyātmānaṃ manyase katham ||

If you are truly the One, free of pervaded and pervader, how can you think of the Self as something perceived, or as something directly present to you?

Meaning today and context

As long as the Self is pictured as something in front of you, even very close, there are still two. The verse keeps pointing back to the one who is looking.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta asks the listener, if he is truly the One beyond pervader and pervaded, how he can think of the Self as something perceived.

1.36 Dattatreya

advaitaṃ kecidicchanti dvaitamicchanti cāpare | samaṃ tattvaṃ na vindanti dvaitādvaitavivarjitam ||

Some want non-duality, others want duality. They do not find the equal reality, which is free of both duality and non-duality.

Meaning today and context

People fight over philosophies and schools, each sure theirs is right. The truth is not won by taking a side; holding views more lightly makes room for it.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says some want non-duality and others duality, but neither finds the reality that is beyond both.

1.37 Dattatreya

śvetādivarṇarahitaṃ śabdādiguṇavarjitam | kathayanti kathaṃ tattvaṃ manovācāmagocaram ||

It is without white or any colour, without sound or any quality of the senses, beyond the reach of mind and speech. How can people describe that reality?

Meaning today and context

The deepest things in life, love, presence, the sense of being, are hard to put into words. This verse says the ultimate is beyond words altogether, so be humble about every description of it.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta asks how anyone can describe a reality without colour or sense qualities, beyond mind and speech.

1.38 Dattatreya

When all this, from the body to the sky, is seen to be unreal, then one truly knows Brahman, and the chain of duality is no longer yours.

Not a reason to neglect your body, health, family, work or treatment; it is about identity, not self-contempt.

Meaning today and context

Seeing that all things, even our own body, are passing loosens the endless chain of me versus that. It is about inner freedom, not neglecting the body or the world.

Dattātreya the Avadhūta says that when everything from the body to the sky is seen as unreal, one knows Brahman and the chain of duality ends.

1.39 Dattatreya

pareṇa sahajātmāpi hyabhinnaḥ pratibhāti me | vyomākāraṃ tathaivaikaṃ dhyātā dhyānaṃ kathaṃ bhavet ||

Even my own innate self appears to me as not different from the Supreme. It is one, shaped like the sky; how then can there be a meditator and a meditation?

Meaning today and context

Meditation usually begins as 'me' working on 'my mind'. The verse points to where that effort ends: a quiet in which there is no one straining and nothing to strain at.

Dattatreya says that even his own innate self appears to him as one with the Supreme, so the split into meditator and meditation falls away.

1.40 Dattatreya

yatkaromi yadaśnāmi yajjuhomi dadāmi yat | etatsarvaṃ na me kiṃcidviśuddho'hamajo'vyayaḥ ||

Whatever I do, whatever I eat, whatever I offer in the fire, whatever I give: none of this is mine at all. I am pure, unborn, imperishable.

Meaning today and context

We cling to what we do and give as 'mine', and then crave thanks or fear blame. Doing the same things without that claim makes them lighter and keeps the giver free.

Dattatreya declares that none of his actions, eating, offerings or gifts belong to him, for the Self is pure, unborn and unchanging.

1.41 Dattatreya

sarvaṃ jagadviddhi nirākṛtīdaṃ sarvaṃ jagadviddhi vikārahīnam | sarvaṃ jagadviddhi viśuddhadehaṃ sarvaṃ jagadviddhi śivaikarūpam ||

Know this whole world to be without form. Know this whole world to be without change. Know this whole world to be of pure body. Know this whole world to be of the one form of Shiva.

Meaning today and context

The same world that looks crowded, broken and changing can be seen as whole and sacred. That way of seeing does not deny problems; it changes the eyes we meet them with.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya urges the listener to see the whole world as formless, changeless, pure and of one nature with Shiva.

1.42 Dattatreya

tattvaṃ tvaṃ na hi sandehaḥ kiṃ jānāmyathavā punaḥ | asaṃvedyaṃ svasaṃvedyamātmānaṃ manyase katham ||

You are That; there is no doubt. What, then, is left for me to know? How can you think about the Self, which cannot be known as an object and is known only by itself?

Meaning today and context

The awareness that knows everything cannot itself be looked at like a thing. Searching for yourself as an object keeps you searching; noticing that you are already the knower ends the hunt.

Dattatreya tells the listener that he is That beyond doubt, and asks how the Self, which cannot be made an object of knowing and is known only by itself, could be thought about.

1.43 Dattatreya

māyā'māyā kathaṃ tāta chāyā'chāyā na vidyate | tattvamekamidaṃ sarvaṃ vyomākāraṃ nirañjanam ||

How can there be māyā or non-māyā, dear one? There is no shadow and no absence of shadow. All this is one reality, like the sky, without stain.

Meaning today and context

Even the idea 'the world is illusion' can become another opinion to hold on to. The verse asks us to drop the debate and rest in what is simply present.

Dattatreya, addressing the listener as 'dear one', says that even the pair māyā and non-māyā does not apply to the one reality.

1.44 Dattatreya

ādimadhyāntamukto'haṃ na baddho'haṃ kadācana | svabhāvanirmalaḥ śuddha iti me niścitā matiḥ ||

I am free of beginning, middle and end; I have never been bound. Stainless by nature, pure: this is my firm conviction.

Feeling pure at heart is not a reason to ignore harm done to others; making amends still matters. If guilt or shame feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Mistakes and bad chapters are real, but they are events in a life, not stains on who you are. Something in you was never touched by them, and starting again from there is possible.

Dattatreya states his settled conviction: the Self has no beginning, middle or end and was never bound.

1.45 Dattatreya

mahadādi jagatsarvaṃ na kiṃcitpratibhāti me | brahmaiva kevalaṃ sarvaṃ kathaṃ varṇāśramasthitiḥ ||

The whole world, beginning with Mahat, does not appear to me at all. Brahman alone is everything; how can there be any order of varṇa and āśrama?

Meaning today and context

Where everyone is the same one reality, labels of birth, class and stage of life lose their hold. It is a strong reminder that no social rank says who a person truly is.

Dattatreya says the whole world of evolutes from Mahat onward does not appear to him; all is Brahman alone, so the divisions of varṇa and āśrama cannot stand.

1.46 Dattatreya

jānāmi sarvathā sarvamahameko nirantaram | nirālambamaśūnyaṃ ca śūnyaṃ vyomādipañcakam ||

I know all, in every way: I alone am, without a break. [The Self] has no support and is not empty; the five beginning with space are empty.

Meaning today and context

Things come and go and have no lasting substance, but the awareness in which they appear is not empty. Knowing this, a sense of fullness need not depend on what we own or hold.

Dattatreya says he knows everything as himself, one and unbroken, while the five elements beginning with space are empty.

1.47 Dattatreya

na ṣaṇḍho na pumānna strī na bodho naiva kalpanā | sānando vā nirānandamātmānaṃ manyase katham ||

[The Self] is not neuter, not male, not female; it is not knowledge and not imagination. How can you think of the Self as joyful or as joyless?

Meaning today and context

Gender, moods and ideas about ourselves are real in daily life, but none of them is the whole of you. Underneath good days and bad days is something that is neither.

Dattatreya says the Self is neither neuter, man nor woman, neither knowing nor imagining, and asks how it can be thought of as joyful or joyless.

1.48 Dattatreya

ṣaḍaṅgayogānna tu naiva śuddhaṃ manovināśānna tu naiva śuddham | gurūpadeśānna tu naiva śuddhaṃ svayaṃ ca tattvaṃ svayameva buddham ||

Not by six-limbed yoga, no, never, is it made pure. Not by destroying the mind, no, never, is it made pure. Not by the teacher's instruction, no, never, is it made pure. Reality is itself, and is awake by itself.

Meaning today and context

Practices and teachers can clear the way, but they do not manufacture what you are; it was never impure. This speaks from the state of one already free; it is not a reason to give up practice or good guidance.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya says the Self is not made pure by six-limbed yoga, by destroying the mind, or by a teacher's instruction: reality is awake by itself.

1.49 Dattatreya

na hi pañcātmako deho videho vartate na hi | ātmaiva kevalaṃ sarvaṃ turīyaṃ ca trayaṃ katham ||

There is no body made of the five elements, nor is there any bodiless one. The Self alone is everything; how can there be the fourth (turīya) and the three?

Meaning today and context

Maps of the spiritual path, such as waking, dream, sleep and the fourth, are useful, but the map is not the place. Sooner or later even the map is set down.

Dattatreya says there is neither a body of five elements nor a bodiless state; the Self alone is all, so the scheme of three states and a fourth does not apply.

1.50 Dattatreya

na baddho naiva mukto'haṃ na cāhaṃ brahmaṇaḥ pṛthak | na kartā na ca bhoktāhaṃ vyāpyavyāpakavarjitaḥ ||

I am neither bound nor free, nor am I separate from Brahman. I am not the doer and not the enjoyer; I am beyond pervaded and pervader.

This describes the state of one already free, as the Avadhuta sees it. It is not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment, or to drop ethical conduct.

Meaning today and context

Much stress comes from carrying the full weight of every outcome as 'my doing' and 'my result'. Do your part with care, and let the sense of being the one great doer loosen.

Dattatreya says he is neither bound nor free, not separate from Brahman, neither doer nor enjoyer, beyond what pervades and what is pervaded.

1.51 Dattatreya

yathā jalaṃ jale nyastaṃ salilaṃ bhedavarjitam | prakṛtiṃ puruṣaṃ tadvadabhinnaṃ pratibhāti me ||

As water poured into water is just water, with no difference, so prakṛti and puruṣa appear to me as undivided.

Meaning today and context

We often split life into the spiritual and the ordinary, the inner and the outer. The image invites us to see them mixing without a seam, so daily life itself becomes the place of practice.

Dattatreya uses the image of water poured into water to say that nature (prakṛti) and spirit (puruṣa) appear to him as one.

1.52 Dattatreya

If indeed you are not freed, because you were never bound, how can you think of the Self as having form or as formless?

Meaning today and context

Endless questions about whether God or the Self has form can become a way of staying in the head. The verse turns us from theory back to the one who is asking.

Dattatreya asks the listener: if you were never bound and so never needed freeing, how can you think of the Self as having form or as formless?

1.53 Dattatreya

jānāmi te paraṃ rūpaṃ pratyakṣaṃ gaganopamam | yathā paraṃ hi rūpaṃ yanmarīcijalasannibham ||

I know your highest form: directly evident, like the sky. And the other form, that is like the water of a mirage.

Meaning today and context

Someone can see your deepest worth more clearly than your passing roles and faults. The image of a mirage says those surface forms look solid but cannot quench the thirst to know yourself.

Dattatreya tells the listener he knows his highest nature, directly, like the sky, while the other, apparent form is like the water of a mirage.

1.54 Dattatreya

na gururnopadeśaśca na copādhirna me kriyā | videhaṃ gaganaṃ viddhi viśuddho'haṃ svabhāvataḥ ||

There is no teacher, no teaching, no limiting adjunct, and no action of mine. Know [the Self] to be bodiless, like the sky: I am pure by my very nature.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level nothing outside you makes you whole. This is spoken from the state of one already free; it is not advice to give up learning from good teachers.

Dattatreya says that for the Self there is no teacher, no teaching, no limiting adjunct and no action; it is bodiless like the sky and pure by nature.

1.55 Dattatreya

You are pure, you are without a body; the mind is not yours; you are higher than the highest. Are you not shy to say, 'I am the Self, the supreme reality'?

Meaning today and context

Even spiritual statements can turn into a new badge for the ego. The truest thing about you may be quieter than any claim you can make about it.

Dattatreya tells the listener that he is pure and bodiless and beyond the mind, and teasingly asks whether he is not shy to say even 'I am the Self, the supreme reality', since saying it already makes a second.

1.56 Dattatreya

kathaṃ rodiṣi re citta hyātmaivātmātmanā bhava | piba vatsa kalātītamadvaitaṃ paramāmṛtam ||

Why do you weep, O mind? Be the Self, by the Self, as the Self. Drink, my child, the supreme nectar of non-duality, beyond all parts.

Sadness and grief are real and deserve care; the verse is gentle comfort, not a command to stop feeling. If low moods persist, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

You can speak to your own troubled mind kindly, the way one comforts a child, instead of scolding it. Beneath the crying there is a place of rest that is already yours.

Dattatreya speaks tenderly to his own mind as to a child, asking why it weeps and urging it to rest as the Self and drink the nectar of non-duality.

1.57 Dattatreya

There is no knowing, nor not-knowing, nor knowing-and-not-knowing. One whose understanding is always like this: that is understanding, and it is not otherwise.

Meaning today and context

Real clarity is not having an answer for everything. It is a quiet openness that does not need to cling either to certainty or to doubt.

Dattatreya says real understanding is neither knowing nor not-knowing nor a mix of the two; whoever always understands in this way has true understanding.

1.58 Dattatreya

jñānaṃ na tarko na samādhiyogo na deśakālau na gurūpadeśaḥ | svabhāvasaṃvittarahaṃ ca tattvamākāśakalpaṃ sahajaṃ dhruvaṃ ca ||

It is not learning, not reasoning, not the yoga of samādhi, not place or time, not a teacher's instruction. By nature I am awareness, the reality, like space, innate and unchanging.

This describes the state of one already free, as the Avadhuta sees it. It is not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment, or to drop ethical conduct.

Meaning today and context

We look for peace in the right method, the right place or the right time. The verse says what you seek is closer than all of these, already present as your own awareness.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya says the Self is not reached as learning, reasoning, samādhi, place, time or a teacher's instruction; it is natural awareness, like space.

1.59 Dattatreya

na jāto'haṃ mṛto vāpi na me karma śubhāśubham | viśuddhaṃ nirguṇaṃ brahma bandho muktiḥ kathaṃ mama ||

I was not born, nor have I died; I have no karma, good or bad. I am pure Brahman without qualities; how can there be bondage or liberation for me?

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death, please talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Fear of death and worry about one's record of deeds weigh on many people. The verse points to what in us is untouched by birth and death; it can steady us without denying that this life matters.

Dattatreya says he was never born and does not die, has no good or bad karma, and as pure Brahman can have neither bondage nor liberation.

1.60 Dattatreya

If God is all-pervading, steady, full and without a break, I see no gap at all; how then is he outside or inside?

Meaning today and context

We often feel God is far away, or must be found deep within. If the divine fills everything, it is neither far nor hidden; it is right here in this moment.

Dattatreya reasons that if God is everywhere, steady, full and unbroken, there is no gap anywhere, so God cannot be called outside or inside.

1.61 Dattatreya

sphuratyeva jagatkṛtsnamakhaṇḍitanirantaram | aho māyāmahāmoho dvaitādvaitavikalpanā ||

The whole world simply shines forth, unbroken and continuous. Ah, the great delusion of māyā: imagining duality and non-duality!

Meaning today and context

Arguments about which philosophy is right can themselves become a trap. Life is simply here, whole, before we divide it with labels.

Dattatreya says the whole world shines as one unbroken whole, and marvels that the great delusion of māyā makes us imagine even 'duality' and 'non-duality'.

1.62 Dattatreya

sākāraṃ ca nirākāraṃ neti netīti sarvadā | bhedābhedavinirmukto vartate kevalaḥ śivaḥ ||

With form and without form: 'not this, not this', always. Free from difference and non-difference, Shiva alone exists.

Meaning today and context

'Not this, not this' is a way of letting go of every label until only what is real remains. Applied gently, it frees us from the stories we tell about ourselves.

Dattatreya says that form and the formless are both negated with 'not this, not this', and Shiva alone remains, free from difference and non-difference.

1.63 Dattatreya

You have no mother, no father, no kinsman; no wife, no son, no friend; no one on your side and no one against you. Why, then, this burning in your mind?

This is not advice to disown family or stop caring for them. If you are grieving someone, the loss is real; the verse offers a deeper footing, not a dismissal of love.

Meaning today and context

When relationships hurt, the pain can feel like it defines us. The verse reminds us that who we are is deeper than any role in a family or quarrel. It is about the Self, not about cutting people off.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya tells the listener that at the level of the Self he has no mother, father, kin, wife, son or friend, no ally or opponent, and asks why then his mind is so tormented.

1.64 Dattatreya

Day and night are not of your mind; nor are rising and setting. How do the wise imagine bodiliness for the bodiless?

Meaning today and context

Our moods rise and set like the sun, and the body has its days and nights. Something in us watches all of this without itself rising or setting.

Dattatreya says day and night, rising and setting do not belong to the mind of the Self, and wonders how the wise can imagine the bodiless to be a body.

1.65 Dattatreya

nāvibhaktaṃ vibhaktaṃ ca na hi duḥkhasukhādi ca | na hi sarvamasarvaṃ ca viddhi cātmānamavyayam ||

It is not undivided, nor divided; it is not pain, pleasure and the like; it is not all, nor not-all. Know the Self as imperishable.

Pain and pleasure come and go and both are real while they last. The verse asks us to also know the part of us that neither of them can destroy.

Dattatreya tells the listener to know the Self as imperishable, beyond undivided and divided, beyond pain and pleasure, beyond all and not-all.

1.66 Dattatreya

nāhaṃ kartā na bhoktā ca na me karma purā'dhunā | na me deho videho vā nirmameti mameti kim ||

I am not the doer, nor the enjoyer; I have no karma, past or present. I have no body, nor am I bodiless; what then is 'mine' and what is 'not mine'?

This describes the state of one already free, as the Avadhuta sees it. It is not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment, or to drop ethical conduct.

Meaning today and context

Much worry comes from guarding what is 'mine': my things, my reputation, my record. Holding these more lightly does not mean neglecting them; it means not being owned by them.

Dattatreya says he is neither doer nor enjoyer, has no karma past or present, no body nor bodilessness, and asks what then could be 'mine' or 'not mine'.

1.67 Dattatreya

na me rāgādiko doṣo duḥkhaṃ dehādikaṃ na me | ātmānaṃ viddhi māmekaṃ viśālaṃ gaganopamam ||

I have no faults such as attachment; pain that belongs to the body and the rest is not mine. Know me as the one Self, vast, like the sky.

This is not a reason to ignore physical pain or illness; see a doctor when needed. For addiction, seek proper help alongside any spiritual practice.

Meaning today and context

Cravings and aches pass through us like weather through the sky. Seeing yourself as the wide sky rather than the passing cloud can soften their grip, while the body still gets its care.

Dattatreya says faults like attachment do not belong to him, nor the suffering of body and the rest; he asks to be known as the one Self, vast as the sky.

1.68 Dattatreya

sakhe manaḥ kiṃ bahujalpitena sakhe manaḥ sarvamidaṃ vitarkyam | yatsārabhūtaṃ kathitaṃ mayā te tvameva tattvaṃ gaganopamo'si ||

Friend mind, what is the use of so much chatter? Friend mind, all this is mere guesswork. The essence I have told you is this: you yourself are the reality, like the sky.

Meaning today and context

Overthinking is the mind talking to itself without end. You can befriend the mind and gently tell it to rest, because what you are is not found in more thoughts.

In a longer metre, Dattatreya addresses his mind as a friend: enough chatter, all this is only conjecture; the essence is that you yourself are the reality, like the sky.

1.69 Dattatreya

yena kenāpi bhāvena yatra kutra mṛtā api | yoginastatra līyante ghaṭākāśamivāmbare ||

In whatever state of mind and wherever they die, yogins dissolve right there, like the space in a pot into the open sky.

This verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are grieving or thinking about death, please talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

For one who knows the Self, the time, place and manner of death do not decide their freedom. It can ease the worry that a 'bad' death ruins a good life.

Dattatreya says that yogins, in whatever state of mind and wherever they die, merge there itself, like the space in a pot into the open sky.

1.70 Dattatreya

tīrthe cāntyajagehe vā naṣṭasmṛtirapi tyajan | samakāle tanuṃ muktaḥ kaivalyavyāpako bhavet ||

Whether at a holy place or in the house of an outcaste, even with his memory lost, the liberated one, leaving the body, at that very moment becomes the all-pervading absolute.

'Outcaste' (antyaja) is a word of its time; the verse says such distinctions do not matter, and birth never ranks anyone. The verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die; for grief or thoughts of death, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Holy places and last rites are not what free a person; knowing the Self is. People who lose their memory, as in dementia, or die far from home or ritual are not lost because of it.

Dattatreya says the liberated one, whether he dies at a holy place or in the house of an outcaste, and even if his memory is gone, becomes at that moment one with the all-pervading.

1.71 Dattatreya

dharmārthakāmamokṣāṃśca dvipadādicarācaram | manyante yoginaḥ sarvaṃ marīcijalasannibham ||

Dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation, and all that moves and does not move, from two-footed beings on: yogins regard all of it as like the water of a mirage.

This describes the state of one already free, as the Avadhuta sees it. It is not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment, or to drop ethical conduct.

Meaning today and context

Even our highest goals can become something to chase. Seen from the yogin's view, nothing outside can finally quench our thirst; that does not make our duties or relationships worthless.

Dattatreya says yogins see all four aims of life, dharma, artha, kāma and even mokṣa, and every being moving or still, as like the water of a mirage.

1.72 Dattatreya

atītānāgataṃ karma vartamānaṃ tathaiva ca | na karomi na bhuñjāmi iti me niścalā matiḥ ||

Action past, action to come, and action now as well: I neither do it nor experience it. This is my unwavering conviction.

This describes the state of one already free, as the Avadhuta sees it. It is not a reason to stop caring for your body, family, work or treatment, or to drop ethical conduct.

Meaning today and context

Regret about the past and worry about the future both assume a self that must carry every deed. Resting as the witness lets you act now, take responsibility and still not be crushed by the load.

Dattatreya states his unwavering conviction that he neither does nor experiences any action, past, future or present.

1.73 Dattatreya

śūnyāgāre samarasapūtastiṣṭhannekaḥ sukhamavadhūtaḥ | carati hi nagnastyaktvā garvaṃ vindati kevalamātmani sarvam ||

In an empty house, purified by the one taste of sameness, the Avadhūta stays alone and happy. He wanders naked, having given up pride, and finds everything in the Self alone.

The wandering, naked renunciate is an ideal of its tradition, not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people it means inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The picture is of someone who needs nothing outside to be content. For most of us it means inner freedom: less need for approval and possessions, while we stay with our families and work.

In a lilting metre, Dattatreya describes the Avadhūta: alone and happy in an empty dwelling, purified by sameness, wandering naked, free of pride, finding everything in the Self alone.

1.74 Dattatreya

tritayaturīyaṃ nahi nahi yatra vindati kevalamātmani tatra | dharmādharmau nahi nahi yatra baddho muktaḥ kathamiha tatra ||

Where there are no three states and no fourth, no, none, there one finds the Self alone. Where there is no dharma and no adharma, no, none, how can anyone there be bound or free?

Going 'beyond dharma and adharma' describes the realised state; it is never an excuse for harming others or ignoring right conduct.

Meaning today and context

This describes the state of one already free, beyond all categories. It is not a licence to drop ethics; for the rest of us right and wrong remain real guides.

Dattatreya says that where there are no three states and no fourth, and no dharma or adharma, one finds the Self alone, and there can be no talk of bound or free.

1.75 Dattatreya

vindati vindati nahi nahi mantraṃ chandolakṣaṇaṃ nahi nahi tantram | samarasamagno bhāvitapūtaḥ pralapitametatparamavadhūtaḥ ||

He finds, he finds no, no mantra; no rules of metre, no, no tantra. Immersed in the one taste, purified by contemplation, the supreme Avadhūta has spoken these words.

Meaning today and context

The Avadhuta's words are an outpouring, not a rulebook; he even admits they ignore metre. Spiritual life is not finally about getting the formula exactly right; this is not a dismissal of practice for those who use it.

Dattatreya says the Avadhūta finds no mantra, no rules of metre and no tantra; immersed in sameness and purified by contemplation, he has uttered these words.

1.76 Dattatreya

sarvaśūnyamaśūnyaṃ ca satyāsatyaṃ na vidyate | svabhāvabhāvataḥ proktaṃ śāstrasaṃvittipūrvakam ||

All-void and not-void, truth and untruth: these do not exist. This has been told from the nature of one's own being, preceded by an understanding of the scriptures.

Meaning today and context

The teaching rests on two legs: one's own direct experience and the understanding of tradition. Neither alone is enough; together they keep a seeker both honest and grounded.

Closing the first chapter, Dattatreya says that all-void and not-void, truth and untruth do not apply, and that this has been spoken from his own nature, grounded in understanding of scripture.
