Chapter 16 (Bhāgavata 11.21)

16.1 Krishna to Uddhava

ya etānmatpatho hitvā bhaktijñānakriyātmakān | kṣudrānkāmāṃścalaiḥ prāṇairjuṣantaḥ saṃsaranti te ||

Those who abandon these paths of mine, made of devotion, knowledge and action, and chase petty desires with restless senses, keep wandering in the round of birth and death.

Meaning today and context

A life spent only on small, passing wants goes round in circles. Some steady path, whether of love, understanding or dedicated work, gives life a direction.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.1), opening a new chapter: having described the three paths of devotion, knowledge and action, he says what happens to those who leave them.

16.2 Krishna to Uddhava

sve sve'dhikāre yā niṣṭhā sa guṇaḥ parikīrtitaḥ | viparyayastu doṣaḥ syādubhayoreṣa niścayaḥ ||

Steadfastness in one's own proper sphere is called merit; the reverse is fault. This is the settled view on both.

'One's own sphere' (adhikāra) means one's real role, capacity and responsibilities, never a place fixed by caste or birth; it must not be used to keep anyone in their 'place'.

Meaning today and context

What is right for one person may not be right for another; it depends on what you are actually responsible for. Being faithful to your own real role is the measure, rather than copying someone else's.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.2) gives his definition of merit and fault: they are measured by one's own proper place and responsibility, not by the act alone.

16.3 Krishna to Uddhava

śuddhyaśuddhī vidhīyete samāneṣvapi vastuṣu | dravyasya vicikitsārthaṃ guṇadoṣau śubhāśubhau ||

Purity and impurity, merit and fault, the auspicious and the inauspicious are laid down even among things that are alike, so that one can weigh a thing and decide about it.

Purity rules here are about ritual practice; they must never be used to call any person or community impure.

Meaning today and context

Rules of right and wrong are tools for making decisions in daily life, not statements that things are different in their essence. Knowing that keeps rules useful without making them rigid.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.3) explains why scripture labels things pure or impure even though they are the same in substance.

16.4 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmārthaṃ vyavahārārthaṃ yātrārthamiti cānagha | darśito'yaṃ mayācāro dharmamudvahatāṃ dhuram ||

For the sake of dharma, for ordinary dealings, and for getting through life, O sinless one, I have shown this code of conduct to those who carry the burden of dharma.

Meaning today and context

Codes of conduct exist to serve life: to support goodness, to make living together workable, and to get through daily life. They are means, not ends.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.4) states the three purposes of the code of conduct he has taught.

16.5 Krishna to Uddhava

bhūmyambvagnyanilākāśā bhūtānāṃ pañcadhātavaḥ | ābrahmasthāvarādīnāṃ śārīrā ātmasaṃyutāḥ ||

Earth, water, fire, air and space are the five elements of the bodies of all beings, from Brahmā down to the plants, joined with the self.

Meaning today and context

Every body, from the greatest to the smallest, is made of the same stuff. Whatever differences we draw between beings come later and are for practical purposes.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.5) begins to show that all bodies are made of the same elements.

16.6 Krishna to Uddhava

vedena nāmarūpāṇi viṣamāṇi sameṣvapi | dhātuṣūddhava kalpyanta eteṣāṃ svārthasiddhaye ||

Though the elements are the same, Uddhava, the Veda assigns distinct names and forms to these beings, for the fulfilment of their own aims.

The verse itself says the elements are the same in all; distinctions are functional and must never be read as birth-based caste or ranking of people.

Meaning today and context

Roles and labels are given for a purpose, to help each person reach their own good. They do not mean anyone is made of better stuff than another.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.6) continues: the Veda assigns different names and roles to beings who are the same in their elements.

16.7 Krishna to Uddhava

deśakālādibhāvānāṃ vastūnāṃ mama sattama | guṇadoṣau vidhīyete niyamārthaṃ hi karmaṇām ||

O best of the good, merit and fault are laid down for places, times and other conditions, and for things, so as to regulate actions.

Meaning today and context

Right action depends on context: the same act can be fitting in one place and time and unfitting in another. Rules exist to give that judgment some shape.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.7) says merit and fault are assigned to places, times and things in order to regulate action.

16.8 Krishna to Uddhava

akṛṣṇasāro deśānāmabrahmaṇyo'sucirbhavet | kṛṣṇasāro'pyasauvīra kīkaṭāsaṃskṛteriṇam ||

Among lands, one without the black antelope is impure, as is one without devotion to brahmins; even with the black antelope, a land lacking good people, the land of Kīkaṭa, a place without sacraments, and barren ground are impure.

A historical rule about ritual fitness of regions; it must never be used to call any region, people or community impure or inferior.

Meaning today and context

This is a historical example of how ritual fitness of land was judged in its time. Its lasting point is only that the setting of an action was thought to matter.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.8) gives the traditional example of places judged ritually unfit, reflecting the geography and norms of the Puranic period.

16.9 Krishna to Uddhava

karmaṇyo guṇavānkālo dravyataḥ svata eva vā | yato nivartate karma sa doṣo'karmakaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

A time is fit when it suits action, either because the means are at hand or of itself; a time in which action is prevented is held to be faulty, unfit for action.

Meaning today and context

Timing matters. Some moments are right for action because resources and conditions are there; others are not, and recognising this is part of wisdom.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.9) explains when a time is fit or unfit for action.

16.10 Krishna to Uddhava

dravyasya śuddhyaśuddhī ca dravyeṇa vacanena ca | saṃskāreṇātha kālena mahatvālpatayātha vā ||

The purity or impurity of a thing is settled by another substance, by a word of instruction, by a rite, by time, or by its being large or small,

Meaning today and context

Whether something is acceptable is rarely decided by one factor alone; many conditions together decide it.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.10), with the next verse, lists what determines whether a thing is pure or impure.

16.11 Krishna to Uddhava

śaktyāśaktyātha vā buddhyā samṛddhyā ca yadātmane | aghaṃ kurvanti hi yathā deśāvasthānusārataḥ ||

by capacity or incapacity, by understanding, and by prosperity, according to place and condition: in this way things bring fault upon a person.

Meaning today and context

The same act weighs differently for someone who could easily do better and for someone who could not. Judgment should take a person's means and situation into account, including when we judge ourselves.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.11) completes the list begun in the previous verse: fault depends also on a person's capacity and situation.

16.12 Krishna to Uddhava

dhānyadārvasthitantūnāṃ rasataijasacarmaṇām | kālavāyvagnimṛttoyaiḥ pārthivānāṃ yutāyutaiḥ ||

Grain, wood, bone, thread, liquids, metal objects, leather and earthen things are purified by time, air, fire, earth and water, used singly or together.

Traditional ritual purification, not modern hygiene or health advice.

Meaning today and context

A practical list from its time of how different materials were cleaned and made fit for ritual use.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.12) lists traditional means of cleaning various materials.

16.13 Krishna to Uddhava

amedhyaliptaṃ yadyena gandhalepaṃ vyapohati | bhajate prakṛtiṃ tasya tacchaucaṃ tāvadiṣyate ||

When something smeared with filth is cleaned by whatever removes its smell and stain and it returns to its natural state, that much is accepted as its cleansing.

Ritual purity, not health advice. If cleaning or purity thoughts feel compulsive and distressing, that can be OCD, which is treatable; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A sensible, practical standard: something is clean when it is back to its natural state, no more and no less. It discourages obsessive cleaning rituals.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.13) gives the test of when a soiled thing counts as clean.

16.14 Krishna to Uddhava

snānadānatapo'vasthā vīryasaṃskārakarmabhiḥ | matsmṛtyā cātmanaḥ śaucaṃ śuddhaḥ karmācareddvijaḥ ||

By bathing, giving, austerity, one's stage of life, strength, sacraments and rites, and by remembering me, the self is purified; so purified, the twice-born should perform his duties.

'Twice-born' (dvija) reflects the social order of its time; purity here comes through practice and remembrance of God, open to everyone, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

Inner cleanliness comes from many things together: washing, giving, discipline, and above all keeping the divine in mind. Starting one's work with a clear mind is the point.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.14) says how a person, rather than a thing, is purified, placing remembrance of him among the means.

16.15 Krishna to Uddhava

mantrasya ca parijñānaṃ karmaśuddhirmadarpaṇam | dharmaḥ sampadyate ṣaḍbhiradharmastu viparyayaḥ ||

Right knowledge of the mantra, purity of the act and its offering to me: by these six dharma is accomplished; adharma is their opposite.

Meaning today and context

A good action needs the right setting, the right means, the right person, a clear understanding of what is being done, honest execution, and offering it beyond oneself.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.15) completes the six factors of a right action: place, time, substance and agent (previous verses), plus mantra and act.

16.16 Krishna to Uddhava

kvacidguṇo'pi doṣaḥ syāddoṣo'pi vidhinā guṇaḥ | guṇadoṣārthaniyamastadbhidāmeva bādhate ||

Sometimes even a merit becomes a fault, and by injunction even a fault becomes a merit; the very rule about merit and fault undoes the idea that they are fixed and separate.

Meaning today and context

Good and bad are often not fixed labels; the same trait or act can help in one case and harm in another. Wisdom means seeing the situation, not applying a label blindly.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.16) points out that merit and fault are not absolute: the rules themselves make exceptions.

16.17 Krishna to Uddhava

samānakarmācaraṇaṃ patitānāṃ na pātakam | autpattiko guṇaḥ saṅgo na śayānaḥ patatyadhaḥ ||

For those already fallen, doing the same acts is not a cause of further fall; for them attachment, being natural, is a merit. One lying on the ground does not fall any lower.

'Fallen' (patita) here describes a spiritual level in the text's argument; it must never be used as a label for any person or group.

Meaning today and context

Standards are meant to lift people from where they are, not to crush them. Ordinary attachments are not a disgrace for someone living an ordinary life; the higher bar applies to those who have taken on a higher discipline.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.17) explains that the same act weighs differently for people at different levels: for those already worldly, ordinary attachments are not a further fall.

16.18 Krishna to Uddhava

yato yato nivarteta vimucyeta tatastataḥ | eṣa dharmo nṛṇāṃ kṣemaḥ śokamohabhayāpahaḥ ||

From whatever a person turns away, from that he is freed. This dharma is people's well-being; it removes grief, delusion and fear.

Turning away from cravings is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, or to withdraw from people.

Meaning today and context

Every craving you let go of is one less thing that can hurt or frighten you. Freedom does not have to come all at once; it comes one release at a time.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.18) gives the principle behind all the rules: freedom comes step by step through turning away.

16.19 Krishna to Uddhava

viṣayeṣu guṇādhyāsātpuṃsaḥ saṅgastato bhavet | saṅgāttatra bhavetkāmaḥ kāmādeva kalirnṛṇām ||

When a person imagines goodness in sense objects, attachment to them arises; from attachment comes desire, and from desire comes strife among people.

Meaning today and context

Most fights start with wanting something and believing it will make us happy. Seeing that chain clearly is the first step in breaking it.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.19) begins a chain showing how ruin starts from projecting value onto sense objects.

16.20 Krishna to Uddhava

kalerdurviṣahaḥ krodhastamastamanuvartate | tamasā grasyate puṃsaścetanā vyāpinī drutam ||

From strife comes unbearable anger; darkness follows it, and by that darkness a person's wide awareness is quickly swallowed.

Meaning today and context

Anger narrows the mind: in a rage we stop seeing the whole picture, the other person and even our own interests. Knowing this, it is wiser to step back before anger takes over.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.20) continues the chain from strife to anger and darkness of mind.

16.21 Krishna to Uddhava

tayā virahitaḥ sādho jantuḥ śūnyāya kalpate | tato'sya svārthavibhraṃśo mūrcchitasya mṛtasya ca ||

Deprived of that awareness, good friend, a being becomes as if empty; then his real good is lost, like one who has fainted or died.

Meaning today and context

When craving and anger cloud awareness, we go through life as if unconscious, forgetting what really matters to us. Staying aware is how we protect our own good.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.21) completes the chain: without awareness, a person loses their true aim.

16.22 Krishna to Uddhava

viṣayābhiniveśena nātmānaṃ veda nāparam | vṛkṣa jīvikayā jīvanvyarthaṃ bhastreva yaḥ śvasan ||

Absorbed in sense objects, one knows neither oneself nor the Supreme; such a person lives in vain like a tree, merely existing, breathing like a bellows.

If emptiness feels like hopelessness or you are thinking of ending your life, please reach out now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

It is possible to be busy, eating, earning and breathing, and still not really living. Life becomes meaningful when it includes knowing oneself and something larger.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.22) describes the person absorbed in sense objects.

16.23 Krishna to Uddhava

phalaśrutiriyaṃ nṛṇāṃ na śreyo rocanaṃ param | śreyovivakṣayā proktaṃ yathā bhaiṣajyarocanam ||

These statements of rewards are not people's highest good; they are an enticement, spoken with the aim of leading to the highest good, like the promise of a treat to make someone take medicine.

Meaning today and context

Rewards can help us start something good, but they are not the point. A wise person eventually looks past the prize to the real benefit.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.23) explains why the Veda promises rewards for rituals: as an enticement, not as the final goal.

16.24 Krishna to Uddhava

utpattyaiva hi kāmeṣu prāṇeṣu svajaneṣu ca | āsaktamanaso martyā ātmano'narthahetuṣu ||

From birth itself, mortals have their minds attached to pleasures, to life and to their own people, which are causes of harm to themselves.

This is about clinging, not a call to stop loving or caring for family; love and care are not the problem.

Meaning today and context

Clinging comes naturally to us; no one has to teach it. Seeing how much of our pain comes through what we cling to is not cause for shame but the start of freedom.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.24) says that people are attached from birth to the very things that harm them.

16.25 Krishna to Uddhava

natānaviduṣaḥ svārthaṃ bhrāmyato vṛjinādhvani | kathaṃ yuñjyātpunasteṣu tāṃstamo viśato budhaḥ ||

Those who do not know their own good, who wander on the path of wrongdoing and are entering darkness: how could the wise Veda engage them again in those very things?

Meaning today and context

A true guide does not feed someone's worst habits; if it seems to, look for the deeper purpose behind the words.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.25) asks rhetorically why the Veda would push such people further into craving; hence its reward-talk must have a deeper aim.

16.26 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ vyavasitaṃ kecidavijñāya kubuddhayaḥ | phalaśrutiṃ kusumitāṃ na vedajñā vadanti hi ||

Not understanding this intent, some of poor understanding proclaim the flowery talk of rewards; those who truly know the Veda do not speak so.

Meaning today and context

Be careful of teachers who sell religion mainly as a way to get rewards. Those who really understand the tradition point beyond the rewards.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.26) criticises those who take the Veda's flowery promises as its real teaching.

16.27 Krishna to Uddhava

Lustful, miserly and greedy, mistaking flowers for fruit, bewildered by the sacrificial fire and choked by its smoke, they do not know their own true world.

Meaning today and context

It is easy to be so busy with the outward forms of religion, or of success, that we mistake the blossom for the fruit and never reach what we were looking for.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.27) describes the reward-seeking ritualists.

16.28 Krishna to Uddhava

They do not know me, dear friend, seated in the heart, from whom this whole world comes and who is this world; busy with hymns and chants, gratifying their own senses, they are like people whose eyes are covered with fog.

Meaning today and context

One can recite every prayer and still miss the divine that is closest of all, within one's own heart. Outer practice needs inner attention.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.28) says the ritualists miss him, the one in their own hearts.

16.29 Krishna to Uddhava

te me matamavijñāya parokṣaṃ viṣayātmakāḥ | hiṃsāyāṃ yadi rāgaḥ syādyajña eva na codanā ||

Not knowing my intent, which is hidden, they are devoted to sense objects. If there is a craving for killing, it is restricted to sacrifice; it is not a command.

This verse limits violence; it must never be read as permission to harm animals or anyone.

Meaning today and context

A rule that limits a harmful habit is not an endorsement of it. Where scripture permits something people already want, read it as a boundary, not an encouragement.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.29) says the Veda only restricts violence that people already crave; it does not command it.

16.30 Krishna to Uddhava

hiṃsāvihārā hyālabdhaiḥ paśubhiḥ svasukhecchayā | yajante devatā yajñaiḥ pitṛbhūtapatīnkhalāḥ ||

Delighting in violence, for their own pleasure they worship the gods, the ancestors and the lords of spirits with sacrifices of slaughtered animals; such people are wicked.

A condemnation of cruelty, not a licence to label or attack any community's practices; disagreement should be peaceful.

Meaning today and context

Cruelty does not become holy because it is done in the name of religion. Krishna calls it what it is.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.30) condemns those who perform animal sacrifice for their own pleasure.

16.31 Krishna to Uddhava

svapnopamamamuṃ lokamasantaṃ śravaṇapriyam | āśiṣo hṛdi saṅkalpya tyajantyarthānyathā vaṇik ||

Picturing in their hearts the blessings of that other world, which is like a dream, unreal and pleasing only to hear of, they give away their wealth like a trader chasing profit.

Not financial advice. Be wary of anyone demanding money for promised spiritual rewards.

Meaning today and context

Promised rewards that sound wonderful can lead us to spend real things for imagined ones. Ask whether the return is real before investing your life in it.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.31) compares ritualists who spend wealth on heavenly rewards to a trader gambling for profit.

16.32 Krishna to Uddhava

rajaḥsattvatamoniṣṭhā rajaḥsattvatamojuṣaḥ | upāsata indramukhyāndevādīnna yathaiva mām ||

Established in and given to rajas, sattva and tamas, they worship Indra and the other gods, but not me in the same way.

Meaning today and context

What we worship reflects what we are made of at the moment. Looking at what we pray for shows what our mind is set on.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.32) says ritualists worship the gods according to their guṇas, but not him.

16.33 Krishna to Uddhava

iṣṭveha devatā yajñairgatvā raṃsyāmahe divi | tasyānta iha bhūyāsma mahāśālā mahākulāḥ ||

"Having worshipped the gods here with sacrifices, we will go to heaven and enjoy ourselves; when that ends, may we be born here again as owners of great houses in great families."

Meaning today and context

Even spiritual life can become a plan for more comfort and status. Krishna holds this up so we can notice it in ourselves.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.33) quotes the hopes of the reward-seekers.

16.34 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ puṣpitayā vācā vyākṣiptamanasāṃ nṛṇām | mānināṃ cātilubdhānāṃ madvārtāpi na rocate ||

The minds of such people are scattered by this flowery speech; proud and exceedingly greedy, they find no taste even for talk of me.

Meaning today and context

When the mind is full of attractive promises, pride and greed, there is no room left for anything deeper. Simplifying our wants makes room for what matters.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.34) says such people lose all taste for talk of him.

16.35 Krishna to Uddhava

vedā brahmātmaviṣayāstrikāṇḍaviṣayā ime | parokṣavādā ṛṣayaḥ parokṣaṃ mama ca priyam ||

The Vedas, dealing with three sections, have Brahman and the Self as their subject; the seers speak indirectly, and the indirect is dear to me.

Meaning today and context

Deep truths are often taught indirectly, through stories, symbols and rituals, so that we discover them ourselves. Reading scripture well means looking for what it points to.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.35) says the Vedas speak indirectly about Brahman and the Self.

16.36 Krishna to Uddhava

śabdabrahma sudurbodhaṃ prāṇendriyamanomayam | anantapāraṃ gambhīraṃ durvigāhyaṃ samudravat ||

The Brahman of sound is very hard to understand; it consists of breath, senses and mind, and is endless, deep and unfathomable like the ocean.

Meaning today and context

Sacred knowledge is vast; no one exhausts it. That is a reason for humility and patience in study, not for giving up.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.36) describes the Veda as sound-Brahman.

16.37 Krishna to Uddhava

mayopabṛṃhitaṃ bhūmnā brahmaṇānantaśaktinā | bhūteṣu ghoṣarūpeṇa viseṣūrṇeva lakṣyate ||

Expanded by me, the infinite Brahman of endless power, it is perceived in beings as sound, like the fine fibre inside a lotus stalk.

Meaning today and context

The divine is present subtly in every living being, as fine and hidden as the thread inside a lotus stem, and can be sensed in the inner sound of one's own life.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.37) says he, the infinite Brahman, is the source of this sacred sound in all beings.

16.38 Krishna to Uddhava

yathorṇanābhirhṛdayādūrṇāmudvamate mukhāt | ākāśādghoṣavānprāṇo manasā sparśarūpiṇā ||

As a spider brings out its thread from its heart through its mouth, so the Lord, as breath endowed with sound, arises from space through the mind, which takes the form of touch,

Meaning today and context

An image from the old theory of how speech arises from breath and mind. It suggests that language, like the spider's thread, comes from within the source and returns to it.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.38), beginning a three-verse sentence (38–40) on how the Lord brings forth sacred speech.

16.39 Krishna to Uddhava

chandomayo'mṛtamayaḥ sahasrapadavīṃ prabhuḥ | oṃkārādvyañjitasparśa svaroṣmāntasthabhūṣitām ||

the Lord, made of metres and of immortality, brings forth from Om the speech of a thousand paths, adorned with consonants, vowels, sibilants and semivowels,

Meaning today and context

In this view all language unfolds from Om. It is a way of seeing every word as rooted in the sacred.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.39), continuing the sentence of 38–40.

16.40 Krishna to Uddhava

vicitrabhāṣāvitatāṃ chandobhiścaturuttaraiḥ | anantapārāṃ bṛhatīṃ sṛjatyākṣipate svayam ||

spread out in many languages, with metres each four syllables longer than the last, endless and vast; this he himself creates and withdraws.

Meaning today and context

The many languages of the world are pictured as one speech of the divine, which it creates and draws back into itself.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.40), completing the sentence of 38–40.

16.41 Krishna to Uddhava

gāyatryuṣṇiganuṣṭupca bṛhatī paṅktireva ca | triṣṭubjagatyaticchando hyatyaṣṭyatijagadvirāṭ ||

Gāyatrī, Uṣṇik, Anuṣṭubh, Bṛhatī and Paṅkti, Triṣṭubh, Jagatī, Aticchandas, Atyaṣṭi, Atijagatī and Virāṭ.

Meaning today and context

A list of the Vedic metres, the forms in which the sacred sound was given shape.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.41) names the Vedic metres referred to in the previous verse.

16.42 Krishna to Uddhava

kiṃ vidhatte kimācaṣṭe kimanūdya vikalpayet | ityasyā hṛdayaṃ loke nānyo madveda kaścana ||

What it enjoins, what it declares, what it restates and examines: the heart of this Veda no one in the world knows but me.

Meaning today and context

Scripture can be argued over endlessly; its real heart is known only by turning toward the One it speaks of. Humility before sacred texts is fitting.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.42) says only he knows the real heart of the Veda.

16.43 Krishna to Uddhava

māṃ vidhatte'bhidhatte māṃ vikalpyāpohyate tvaham | etāvānsarvavedārthaḥ śabda āsthāya māṃ bhidām | māyāmātramanūdyānte pratiṣidhya prasīdati ||

It enjoins me, it declares me; it is I who am examined and set aside. This is the whole meaning of all the Vedas: sacred sound, taking me as its ground, restates difference as mere māyā, finally negates it, and comes to rest.

Meaning today and context

All the rules, rituals and arguments of scripture are meant to bring us to one reality and then fall silent. When the many differences that trouble us are seen through, what remains is peace.

Krishna to Uddhava (Bhagavata 11.21.43) closes the chapter with the meaning of all the Vedas: they point only to him, and the world of difference is māyā.
