Chapter 11 (Bhāgavata 11.16)

11.1 Uddhava to Krishna

tvaṃ brahma paramaṃ sākṣādanādyantamapāvṛtam | sarveṣāmapi bhāvānāṃ trāṇasthityapyayodbhavaḥ ||

You are the supreme Brahman itself, without beginning or end, unveiled; of all beings you are the protection, the sustaining, the dissolution and the origin.

Meaning today and context

Before asking anything, Uddhava names what he believes: that one reality is behind every beginning and ending. A question asked from that trust is different from mere curiosity.

Uddhava opens a new question (Bhāgavata 11.16.1) by praising Krishna as the supreme Brahman, the source, support and end of all beings.

11.2 Uddhava to Krishna

uccāvaceṣu bhūteṣu durjñeyamakṛtātmabhiḥ | upāsate tvāṃ bhagavanyāthātathyena brāhmaṇāḥ ||

Present in beings high and low, you are hard to know for those who have not disciplined themselves; yet the brāhmaṇas, O Lord, worship you as you truly are.

Here 'brāhmaṇa' means one who knows Brahman, by understanding and practice, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

The divine is said to be in every being, great or small, but seeing it takes an inner discipline. Without that training we look straight at it and miss it.

Uddhava says Krishna is present in beings high and low, hard to know for those whose minds are untrained, yet the knowers of Brahman worship him as he truly is.

11.3 Uddhava to Krishna

yeṣu yeṣu ca bhūteṣu bhaktyā tvāṃ paramarṣayaḥ | upāsīnāḥ prapadyante saṃsiddhiṃ tadvadasva me ||

Tell me in which beings the great sages, worshipping you with devotion, attain perfection.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava wants something concrete: where can the infinite be approached? Many people need a place, a form or a quality to hold on to before the mind can rest in God.

Uddhava asks Krishna in which beings the great sages worship him with devotion and so reach perfection.

11.4 Uddhava to Krishna

Hidden, you move as the Self of beings, O sustainer of beings; you see them, but beings, deluded by you, do not see you.

Meaning today and context

What sees through our eyes is the one thing we never see as an object. The verse turns the search around: the divine is not far away but closer than our own looking.

Uddhava says Krishna moves hidden as the Self of all beings; he sees them, but they, deluded by him, do not see him.

11.5 Uddhava to Krishna

yāḥ kāśca bhūmau divi vai rasāyāṃ vibhūtayo dikṣu mahāvibhūte | tā mahyamākhyāhyanubhāvitāste namāmi te tīrthapadāṅghripadmam ||

Whatever glories of yours there are on earth, in heaven, in the netherworld and in all directions, O Lord of great glory, made manifest by your power, tell them to me. I bow to your lotus feet, which make every place holy.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava asks with humility, not to test Krishna but to learn where to find him. Asking a teacher with respect is itself part of learning.

Uddhava asks Krishna to describe all his glories on earth, in heaven, in the netherworld and in every direction, and bows at his feet.

11.6 Krishna to Uddhava

evametadahaṃ pṛṣṭaḥ praśnaṃ praśnavidāṃ vara | yuyutsunā vinaśane sapatnairarjunena vai ||

Best of those who know how to ask, I was asked this very question before by Arjuna at Vinaśana, when he was eager to fight his rivals.

Meaning today and context

Krishna links Uddhava's question to the Gita; the same teaching returns to a new listener.

Krishna replies that Arjuna asked him this same question at Kurukshetra (Vinaśana), when he was about to fight his rivals.

11.7 Krishna to Uddhava

jñātvā jñātivadhaṃ garhyamadharmaṃ rājyahetukam | tato nivṛtto hantāhaṃ hato'yamiti laukikaḥ ||

Knowing that killing his kinsmen for the sake of a kingdom would be blameworthy and against dharma, he turned back from it, thinking like an ordinary man, 'I am the slayer, and this one is slain.'

A war story. It is never a justification for violence or harming anyone.

Meaning today and context

This recalls Arjuna's despair in Gita chapter 1; it is part of the story, not advice.

Krishna recalls how Arjuna, seeing that killing his kin for a kingdom was blameworthy and against dharma, withdrew from battle thinking in the ordinary way, 'I am the killer, they will be killed.'

11.8 Krishna to Uddhava

sa tadā puruṣavyāghro yuktyā me pratibodhitaḥ | abhyabhāṣata māmevaṃ yathā tvaṃ raṇamūrdhani ||

Then that tiger among men, awakened by me through reasoning, spoke to me at the head of the battle just as you do now.

A war story. It is never a justification for violence or harming anyone.

Meaning today and context

Krishna's point is that confusion was met with reasoning, and the question about his glories came after.

Krishna says that after he awakened Arjuna with reasoning, Arjuna, at the front of the battle, asked him the same question Uddhava now asks.

11.9 Krishna to Uddhava

ahamātmoddhavāmīṣāṃ bhūtānāṃ suhṛdīśvaraḥ | ahaṃ sarvāṇi bhūtāni teṣāṃ sthityudbhavāpyayaḥ ||

Uddhava, I am the Self of all these beings, their friend and their Lord. I am all beings, and I am their sustaining, their origin and their dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Before naming any glory, Krishna says he is the friend (suhṛt) within every being. Whatever else we feel about God, this verse says the innermost reality of each person is on their side.

Krishna begins his answer: he is the Self, the friend and the Lord of all beings, and their existence, origin and end.

11.10 Krishna to Uddhava

ahaṃ gatirgatimatāṃ kālaḥ kalayatāmaham | guṇānāṃ cāpyahaṃ sāmyaṃ guṇinyautpattiko guṇaḥ ||

I am the goal of those who move, time among those that measure; of the guṇas I am their balance, and in whatever has qualities I am its inborn nature.

Meaning today and context

Every thing's own nature, the wetness of water, the heat of fire, the gift in a person, is pointed to here as divine. Our natural qualities are not accidents to be ashamed of.

Krishna lists his vibhūtis (manifestations of glory) to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.16), a list close to Gita chapter 10. He is the goal of all who move, time among those who count, the balance of the guṇas, and the natural quality in all that has qualities.

11.11 Krishna to Uddhava

guṇināmapyahaṃ sūtraṃ mahatāṃ ca mahānaham | sūkṣmāṇāmapyahaṃ jīvo durjayānāmahaṃ manaḥ ||

Of things with qualities I am the thread (sūtra); of the great I am the Great (mahat); of the subtle I am the living self (jīva); of the hard to conquer I am the mind.

Meaning today and context

Krishna names the mind as the hardest thing to conquer. If your mind is difficult to manage, you are in good company; the struggle itself is recognised here.

Krishna lists his vibhūtis (manifestations of glory) to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.16), a list close to Gita chapter 10. He is the thread through all evolved things, the great principle (mahat), the subtle jīva, and the mind, hardest to conquer.

Renunciation here is an inner letting go; it is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Naming the gamblers' trickery is not an approval of cheating or gambling, and the verse is not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Prosperity is tied to effort, and patience itself is called divine. The mention of gamblers' trickery, like 'I am the gambling of cheats' in the Gita, says only that whatever excels in its kind draws on one power; it does not approve of the act.

Krishna lists his vibhūtis (manifestations of glory) to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.16), a list close to Gita chapter 10. He is the fortune of the enterprising, the trickery of gamblers, the forbearance of the patient and the goodness of the good.

Meaning today and context

brahmaṇyānāṃ balirahaṃ vīrāṇāmahamarjunaḥ | bhūtānāṃ sthitirutpattirahaṃ vai pratisaṅkramaḥ ||

Among those devoted to the brāhmaṇas I am Bali; among heroes I am Arjuna; of beings I am the maintenance, the origin and the dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Bali, who gave everything he had even to his own loss, is named for generosity; Arjuna for courage. Giving and courage are both divine.

Meaning today and context

Our ordinary abilities, walking, speaking, seeing, are not small things; each is named as a gift of the divine. That can change how we treat our own body and its powers.

Krishna lists his vibhūtis (manifestations of glory) to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.16), a list close to Gita chapter 10. He is the power behind every sense and organ of action: moving, speaking, excreting, grasping, pleasure, touch, sight, taste, hearing and smell.

11.37 Krishna to Uddhava

pṛthivī vāyurākāśa āpo jyotirahaṃ mahān | vikāraḥ puruṣo'vyaktaṃ rajaḥ sattvaṃ tamaḥ param | ahametatprasaṅkhyānaṃ jñānaṃ tattvaviniścayaḥ ||

Earth, air, space, water, fire, ego and the Great principle; the evolutes, the person (puruṣa), the unmanifest, rajas, sattva, tamas, and the supreme: I am all this, and I am the enumeration of them, the knowledge, and the firm ascertainment of truth.

Meaning today and context

Krishna is not only the world but also the understanding of it. Careful inquiry into what things are made of is counted as a path to him.

Krishna lists his vibhūtis (manifestations of glory) to Uddhava (Bhāgavata 11.16), a list close to Gita chapter 10. He is all the Sāṅkhya principles, the elements, ego, mahat, the evolutes, puruṣa, the unmanifest and the guṇas, and also the knowledge that counts them.

11.38 Krishna to Uddhava

mayeśvareṇa jīvena guṇena guṇinā vinā | sarvātmanāpi sarveṇa na bhāvo vidyate kvacit ||

Without me, the Lord, the living self, the quality and what has qualities, the Self of all and all itself, no being exists anywhere at all.

Meaning today and context

The list is not a ranking of favourites; everything that exists stands on one reality. Nothing, and no one, is outside it.

Krishna sums up: without him, as Lord, jīva, quality and the bearer of qualities, nothing whatever exists anywhere.

11.39 Krishna to Uddhava

saṅkhyānaṃ paramāṇūnāṃ kālena kriyate mayā | na tathā me vibhūtīnāṃ sṛjato'ṇḍāni koṭiśaḥ ||

In time I could count the atoms, but not so my glories, for I create universes by the crore.

Meaning today and context

The list just given is only a sample. The divine cannot be exhausted by any catalogue, which leaves room to find it in places no list mentions.

Krishna says he could count the atoms in time, but not his glories, since he creates universes by the crore.

11.40 Krishna to Uddhava

tejaḥ śrīḥ kīrtiraiśvaryaṃ hrīstyāgaḥ saubhagaṃ bhagaḥ | vīryaṃ titikṣā vijñānaṃ yatra yatra sa me'ṃśakaḥ ||

Brilliance, prosperity, renown, mastery, modesty, renunciation, charm, good fortune, valour, forbearance, wisdom: wherever these are found, that is a portion of me.

Meaning today and context

Whenever you meet real courage, patience, humility or wisdom in someone, including yourself, you are meeting something sacred. It is a reason to honour good qualities rather than envy them.

Krishna gives the key to all his glories: wherever there is brilliance, prosperity, fame, power, modesty, generosity, beauty, fortune, courage, patience or wisdom, that is a portion of him.

11.41 Krishna to Uddhava

etāste kīrtitāḥ sarvāḥ saṅkṣepeṇa vibhūtayaḥ | manovikārā evaite yathā vācābhidhīyate ||

All these glories have been told to you in brief. They are only modifications of the mind, as things are spoken of in words.

Meaning today and context

Even the grandest descriptions of God are still ideas in the mind. They are aids to point beyond themselves, not the reality itself.

Krishna closes the list: these glories were told only in brief, and they are only modifications of the mind, as things are named in words.

11.42 Krishna to Uddhava

vācaṃ yaccha mano yaccha prāṇānyacchendriyāṇi ca | ātmānamātmanā yaccha na bhūyaḥ kalpase'dhvane ||

Restrain your speech, restrain your mind, restrain your breath and senses; restrain the self by the self, and you will not again be fit for the road (of rebirth).

Restraint of breath here means calming oneself, not holding the breath forcibly; it is not a breathing exercise or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

After all the grand vision, the practical step is restraint: guard what you say, steady the mind, slow down, and hold yourself with your own understanding. Knowing about God is not enough without this.

Having listed his glories, Krishna turns to practice: restrain speech, mind, breath and senses, restrain the self by the self, and you will not return to the road of saṃsāra.

11.43 Krishna to Uddhava

yo vai vāṅmanasī saṃyagasaṃyacchandhiyā yatiḥ | tasya vrataṃ tapo dānaṃ sravatyāmaghaṭāmbuvat ||

The ascetic who does not properly restrain speech and mind by his intelligence: his vows, austerity and giving leak away like water from an unbaked pot.

Meaning today and context

Good deeds don't hold if the tongue and mind run unchecked. Harsh words and an uncontrolled mind can undo years of effort, like water seeping out of an unbaked pot.

Krishna warns that a renunciate who does not fully restrain speech and mind with understanding loses the merit of his vows, austerity and charity, like water from an unbaked pot.

11.44 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmādvaco manaḥ prāṇānniyacchenmatparāyaṇaḥ | madbhaktiyuktayā buddhyā tataḥ parisamāpyate ||

Therefore, with me as the highest goal, one should restrain speech, mind and breath; with an intelligence joined in devotion to me, one reaches completion.

Restraint of breath here means calming oneself, not forcible breath-holding; not medical advice.

Restraint alone can become dry; here it is joined with love. Self-control comes easier when it serves something we care about deeply.

Krishna concludes: therefore, devoted to him, one should restrain speech, mind and breath; with understanding joined to devotion, one's goal is fulfilled.
