Chapter 12 (Bhāgavata 11.17)

12.1 Uddhava to Krishna

yastvayābhihitaḥ pūrvaṃ dharmastvadbhaktilakṣaṇaḥ | varṇāśramācāravatāṃ sarveṣāṃ dvipadāmapi ||

The dharma you once described, whose mark is devotion to you, for all who keep the conduct of the varnas and ashramas, and indeed for all human beings...

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava wants to know how ordinary duties can become a path to God. The question is still a real one: how can daily work and family life become spiritual practice?

Uddhava opens a new question to Krishna (Bhagavata 11.17.1): he recalls that Krishna once described a dharma marked by devotion to him, meant for all people who follow the order of varnas and ashramas.

12.2 Uddhava to Krishna

yathānuṣṭhīyamānena tvayi bhaktirnṛṇāṃ bhavet | svadharmeṇāravindākṣa tanmamākhyātumarhasi ||

Lotus-eyed one, please tell me how, by practising their own duty, people may come to devotion for you.

Meaning today and context

The point is not to leave one's duties but to do them in a way that deepens love and trust. How we work can shape who we become.

Uddhava continues his request to Krishna: tell me how one's own duty should be done so that it leads to devotion.

12.3 Uddhava to Krishna

purā kila mahābāho dharmaṃ paramakaṃ prabho | yattena haṃsarūpeṇa brahmaṇe'bhyāttha mādhava ||

Long ago, mighty-armed Lord Madhava, you taught that supreme dharma to Brahma in the form of the Swan.

Meaning today and context

A reminder that teaching passes down from source to student; Uddhava asks for the old wisdom again.

Uddhava reminds Krishna that long ago, in the form of the Swan (Hamsa), he taught the supreme dharma to Brahma (the Hamsa teaching of UG.8).

12.4 Uddhava to Krishna

Now, after a very long time, subduer of enemies, the teaching you gave long ago will hardly remain in the world of mortals.

Meaning today and context

Good teaching fades when no one lives and passes it on. Uddhava's concern is a reason to keep wisdom alive by practising it.

Uddhava worries to Krishna that, after so much time, the dharma once taught will hardly survive in the world of mortals.

12.5 Uddhava to Krishna

vaktā kartāvitā nānyo dharmasyācyuta te bhuvi | sabhāyāmapi vairiñcyāṃ yatra mūrtidharāḥ kalāḥ ||

Achyuta, there is no one on earth other than you who speaks, makes and protects dharma, not even in Brahma's assembly, where the branches of knowledge stand in bodily form.

Meaning today and context

Uddhava sees Krishna as the living source of right conduct. For a seeker, it is the sense of having found a true teacher one fully trusts.

Uddhava tells Krishna that no one else on earth speaks, establishes and protects dharma as he does, not even in Brahma's assembly where the Vedas stand in embodied form.

12.6 Uddhava to Krishna

kartrāvitrā pravaktrā ca bhavatā madhusūdana | tyakte mahītale deva vinaṣṭaṃ kaḥ pravakṣyati ||

Madhusudana, when you, its maker, protector and teacher, have left the earth, O Lord, who will teach dharma once it has perished?

Meaning today and context

The fear of losing the one who guided us is real. Uddhava's answer, in the chapters that follow, is to take the teaching into oneself.

Uddhava asks Krishna: once you, the maker, protector and teacher of dharma, have left the earth, who will teach the dharma that is then lost?

12.7 Uddhava to Krishna

tattvaṃ naḥ sarvadharmajña dharmastvadbhaktilakṣaṇaḥ | yathā yasya vidhīyeta tathā varṇaya me prabho ||

So, Lord who knows all dharma, describe to me the dharma marked by devotion to you, and how it is prescribed for each person.

Meaning today and context

Different people walk the same path in different ways. Uddhava asks for guidance fitted to each person's life.

Uddhava ends his question to Krishna: describe the dharma marked by devotion to you, and how it is enjoined for each person.

12.8 Shuka to Parikshit

itthaṃ svabhṛtyamukhyena pṛṣṭaḥ sa bhagavānhariḥ | prītaḥ kṣemāya martyānāṃ dharmānāha sanātanān ||

Asked this by the foremost of his servants, Lord Hari was pleased, and for the welfare of mortals he spoke of the eternal dharmas.

Meaning today and context

A sincere question draws out a teacher's best. The teaching that follows is offered for everyone's welfare.

Shuka, narrating to King Parikshit, says Krishna, pleased by his foremost servant's question, began to teach the eternal dharmas for the good of mortals.

12.9 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmya eṣa tava praśno naiḥśreyasakaro nṛṇām | varṇāśramācāravatāṃ tamuddhava nibodha me ||

This question of yours is in keeping with dharma and brings people to the highest good. Hear from me, Uddhava, about it, for those who follow the conduct of varnas and ashramas.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Asking how to live rightly is itself a good beginning. The answer is meant to lead to lasting well-being, not just social order.

Krishna begins his reply to Uddhava, praising the question as one that leads people to the highest good.

12.10 Krishna to Uddhava

ādau kṛtayuge varṇo nṛṇāṃ haṃsa iti smṛtaḥ | kṛtakṛtyāḥ prajā jātyā tasmātkṛtayugaṃ viduḥ ||

In the beginning, in Krita Yuga, people had one varna, remembered as Hamsa. Everyone was fulfilled by birth itself, and so that age is known as Krita.

Meaning today and context

The text pictures a time without divisions, when everyone was whole. Divisions among people are, in its own telling, a later development, not the original state.

Krishna tells Uddhava that in the first age, Krita Yuga, there was only one varna, called Hamsa; people were fulfilled from birth, which is why the age is called Krita (accomplished).

12.11 Krishna to Uddhava

vedaḥ praṇava evāgre dharmo'haṃ vṛṣarūpadhṛk | upāsate taponiṣṭhā haṃsaṃ māṃ muktakilbiṣāḥ ||

In the beginning the Veda was only Om; I was dharma in the form of a bull. Steadfast in austerity and free from sin, people worshipped me as the Swan.

Meaning today and context

Before elaborate rituals, the practice was simple: Om, discipline and a pure life. Simplicity can be the deepest form of worship.

Krishna continues to Uddhava on Krita Yuga: the Veda was then only the syllable Om, he himself was dharma in the form of a bull, and the pure worshipped him as Hamsa through austerity.

12.12 Krishna to Uddhava

tretāmukhe mahābhāga prāṇānme hṛdayāttrayī | vidyā prādurabhūttasyā ahamāsaṃ trivṛnmakhaḥ ||

At the start of Treta, fortunate one, the threefold knowledge (the three Vedas) appeared from my breath and my heart, and from it I took the form of the threefold sacrifice.

Meaning today and context

As times change, forms of practice change too. Ritual came later, as a way to reach the same source.

Krishna tells Uddhava that at the start of Treta Yuga the threefold Veda arose from his heart and breath, and from it he appeared as the threefold sacrifice.

12.13 Krishna to Uddhava

viprakṣatriyaviṭśūdrā mukhabāhūrupādajāḥ | vairājātpuruṣājjātā ya ātmācāralakṣaṇāḥ ||

The brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya and shudra were born from the mouth, arms, thighs and feet of the cosmic Person, Viraj; they are known by their own conduct.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

The verse itself says each role is known by conduct. All four are parts of one body: a picture of interdependence, not of higher and lower people.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the four varnas arose from the cosmic Person's mouth, arms, thighs and feet, and that each is marked by its own conduct.

12.14 Krishna to Uddhava

gṛhāśramo jaghanato brahmacaryaṃ hṛdo mama | vakṣaḥsthalādvanevāsaḥ sannyāsaḥ śirasi sthitaḥ ||

The householder's stage came from my loins, the student's celibate stage from my heart, forest-dwelling from my chest, and renunciation is set in my head.

Meaning today and context

Each stage of life is part of one whole: learning, family life, stepping back, and letting go. Every stage has its place and dignity.

Krishna tells Uddhava where the four ashramas (stages of life) arose from his cosmic body.

12.15 Krishna to Uddhava

varṇānāmāśramāṇāṃ ca janmabhūmyanusāriṇīḥ | āsanprakṛtayo nṛṇāṃ nīcairnīcottamottamāḥ ||

The natures of people in the varnas and ashramas followed the places they were born from: lower from lower, higher from higher.

This verse ranks natures as higher and lower by origin. It reflects the social order of its time, not the app's view, and must never be used to rank, exclude or demean anyone by birth.

Meaning today and context

This verse reflects the hierarchy of its time. Read alongside UG.12.13 and 12.21, the lasting point is that every person's nature and conduct matter, and the virtues for all are the same.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the natures of people in the varnas and ashramas follow their place of origin in his body, higher or lower.

12.16 Krishna to Uddhava

Calm, self-restraint, austerity, purity, contentment, forbearance, straightforwardness, devotion to me, compassion and truthfulness: these are the qualities of the brahmin's nature.

Meaning today and context

A 'brahmin' here is defined by inner qualities anyone can grow: calm, honesty, patience, kindness, contentment. It is a description of character, not of birth.

Krishna lists for Uddhava the qualities that mark the brahmin nature.

12.17 Krishna to Uddhava

12.18 Krishna to Uddhava

Meaning today and context

Honest service done without pretence, and contentment with its fruit, has its own dignity. Service is a quality anyone can practise, not a fixed station for some people.

Krishna lists for Uddhava the qualities of the shudra (one who serves) nature.

12.20 Krishna to Uddhava

Meaning today and context

Read as a list of vices that make anyone's life smaller (lying, stealing, pointless fights, lust, anger, craving), not as a description of any group of people.

Krishna describes to Uddhava the nature of the antyavasayins, those at the margins outside the four varnas, as marked by vices.

12.21 Krishna to Uddhava

ahiṃsā satyamasteyamakāmakrodhalobhatā | bhūtapriyahitehā ca dharmo'yaṃ sārvavarṇikaḥ ||

Meaning today and context

Whatever your role, the basics are the same for everyone: do no harm, tell the truth, don't take what isn't yours, master anger and greed, and work for others' good.

Krishna tells Uddhava the dharma common to all people of every varna.

12.22 Krishna to Uddhava

dvitīyaṃ prāpyānupūrvyājjanmopanayanaṃ dvijaḥ | vasangurukule dānto brahmādhīyīta cāhūtaḥ ||

Gaining in due order a second birth through the sacred-thread initiation, the twice-born student should live in the teacher's household, self-controlled, and study the Veda when called.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Real learning begins with a kind of new birth: humility, self-control and readiness to learn when the teacher calls.

Krishna begins describing to Uddhava the student (brahmacharya) stage: after the sacred-thread initiation, the student lives with the teacher and studies.

12.23 Krishna to Uddhava

mekhalājinadaṇḍākṣa brahmasūtrakamaṇḍalūn | jaṭilo'dhautadadvāso'raktapīṭhaḥ kuśāndadhat ||

He should carry the girdle, deerskin, staff, rosary, sacred thread and water-pot, wear matted hair, not polish his teeth or clothes, not sit on a coloured seat, and hold kusha grass.

Meaning today and context

Old rules of simplicity for students: few possessions and no attention to appearance, so the mind stays on learning.

Krishna describes to Uddhava the outward marks of the celibate student.

12.24 Krishna to Uddhava

snānabhojanahomeṣu japoccāre ca vāgyataḥ | na cchindyānnakharomāṇi kakṣopasthagatānyapi ||

He should keep silent while bathing, eating, making offerings and reciting prayers, and should not cut his nails or hair, not even that of the armpits and groin.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is attention: doing one thing at a time, in silence, without distraction.

Krishna continues the student's rules for Uddhava: silence at certain times, and not cutting hair or nails.

12.25 Krishna to Uddhava

reto nāvakirejjātu brahmavratadharaḥ svayam | avakīrṇe'vagāhyāpsu yatāsustripadāṃ japet ||

Keeping the vow of brahmacharya, he should never spill his seed himself; if it is spilled, he should bathe in water, restrain his breath and repeat the Gayatri.

A traditional rule for celibate students, not a judgement on normal sexuality. Involuntary emissions and sexual feelings are natural; do not carry shame or guilt over them. Breath control: not medical advice. If shame or guilt feel overwhelming, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

For the student, the vow is about directing energy and attention to learning. A lapse is met with a simple act of renewal, not self-hatred.

Krishna gives Uddhava the student's vow of celibacy and the rite of purification if it is broken.

12.26 Krishna to Uddhava

agnyarkācāryagovipra guruvṛddhasurāñśuciḥ | samāhita upāsīta sandhye dve yatavāgjapan ||

Pure and collected, he should honour fire, the sun, the teacher, cows, brahmins, the guru, elders and the gods, and at the two twilights worship in silence, repeating prayers.

Meaning today and context

Daily rhythm and reverence shape a young mind: a quiet time morning and evening, and respect for teachers, elders and the natural world.

Krishna tells Uddhava whom the student should revere and how to keep the twilight prayers.

12.27 Krishna to Uddhava

ācāryaṃ māṃ vijānīyānnāvamanyeta karhicit | na martyabuddhyāsūyeta sarvadevamayo guruḥ ||

He should know the teacher to be me and never slight him. He should not resent him, thinking him a mere mortal, for the guru embodies all the gods.

Reverence for a teacher is never a reason to accept abuse, exploitation or harm. If a teacher or guru demands obedience in ways that hurt you or others, seek help (112 / 181).

Meaning today and context

When we learn, resentment and fault-finding toward the teacher block the learning. Seeing something sacred in the one who teaches opens us to receive.

Krishna tells Uddhava how the student should regard the teacher: as Krishna himself.

12.28 Krishna to Uddhava

sāyaṃ prātarupānīya bhaikṣyaṃ tasmai nivedayet | yaccānyadapyanujñātamupayuñjīta saṃyataḥ ||

Morning and evening he should bring the alms he has gathered and offer them to the teacher, and, self-restrained, use only what the teacher permits.

Meaning today and context

An old discipline of humility and restraint: the student receives what he needs through the teacher.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the student offers the alms he gathers to the teacher and uses only what he is allowed.

12.29 Krishna to Uddhava

śuśrūṣamāṇa ācāryaṃ sadopāsīta nīcavat | yānaśayyāsanasthānairnātidūre kṛtāñjaliḥ ||

Serving the teacher, he should always attend on him humbly, following him as he travels, rests, sits and stands, staying not too far off, with joined palms.

Humility toward a teacher does not mean accepting abuse or exploitation. If a teacher harms or exploits you, seek help (112 / 181).

Meaning today and context

Closeness to a good teacher, and humble attentiveness, is how much of the deepest learning happens.

Krishna tells Uddhava how the student serves the teacher with humility.

12.30 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃvṛtto gurukule vasedbhogavivarjitaḥ | vidyā samāpyate yāvadbibhradvratamakhaṇḍitam ||

Living like this in the teacher's household, free of indulgence, he should keep his vow unbroken until his learning is complete.

Meaning today and context

Focused years of learning, with distractions set aside, are an investment that pays off for a lifetime.

Krishna tells Uddhava the student should live this way in the teacher's house until his studies are complete.

12.31 Krishna to Uddhava

yadyasau chandasāṃ lokamārokṣyanbrahmaviṣṭapam | gurave vinyaseddehaṃ svādhyāyārthaṃ bṛhadvrataḥ ||

If he wishes to rise to Brahma's world, the world of the Vedas, he should give his body to the teacher for life, for the sake of study, keeping the great vow.

A lifelong vow is a personal, informed choice; it is never something to be pressed on anyone, and handing one's life to a teacher never means accepting exploitation.

Meaning today and context

Some choose to give their whole life to learning and service. The verse honours that choice; it is one path among others.

Krishna tells Uddhava about the lifelong celibate student who never leaves the teacher.

12.32 Krishna to Uddhava

agnau gurāvātmani ca sarvabhūteṣu māṃ param | apṛthagdhīrupasīta brahmavarcasvyakalmaṣaḥ ||

Seeing no separation, he should worship me, the Supreme, in the fire, in the teacher, in himself and in all beings; then he becomes radiant with sacred knowledge and free of stain.

Meaning today and context

The same divine presence is in the teacher, in yourself and in every living being. Seeing this changes how we treat everyone, including ourselves.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the student should worship him in fire, the teacher, oneself and all beings, without seeing them as separate.

12.33 Krishna to Uddhava

strīṇāṃ nirīkṣaṇasparśa saṃlāpakṣvelanādikam | prāṇino mithunībhūtānagṛhastho'gratastyajet ||

One who is not a householder should, from the start, give up looking at, touching, conversing and joking with women, and watching creatures that are mating.

A rule for celibate students and renunciates of its time, about one's own craving. It is not the app's view of women and must never be used to blame, avoid, exclude or demean women.

Meaning today and context

For one who has taken a vow of celibacy, the rule is about guarding one's own mind and craving.

Krishna tells Uddhava that one who is not a householder (a celibate student or renunciate) should avoid all intimate contact with women.

12.34 Krishna to Uddhava

śaucamācamanaṃ snānaṃ sandhyopāstirmamārcanam | tīrthasevā japo'spṛśyā bhakṣyāsambhāṣyavarjanam ||

Cleanliness, sipping water in purification, bathing, the twilight worship, worship of me, visiting holy places, repetition of prayer, and avoiding what is not to be touched, eaten or spoken with...

'Avoiding what is not to be touched' reflects ideas of ritual purity from its time. It must never be read as treating any person as untouchable; untouchability is abolished and punishable in India (Constitution, Article 17).

Meaning today and context

Regular habits of cleanliness, prayer and pilgrimage keep spiritual life steady. The lasting part is daily discipline, not avoiding people.

Krishna lists for Uddhava the observances common to all stages of life (the sentence continues into the next verse).

12.35 Krishna to Uddhava

sarvāśramaprayukto'yaṃ niyamaḥ kulanandana | madbhāvaḥ sarvabhūteṣu manovākkāyasaṃyamaḥ ||

This discipline is enjoined on all the stages of life, joy of the family: seeing me in all beings, and restraint of mind, speech and body.

Meaning today and context

Whatever stage of life you are in, two things always apply: see the sacred in every being, and keep your thoughts, words and actions in check.

Krishna completes the list for Uddhava: these rules apply to all ashramas, and above all, seeing him in all beings and restraint of mind, speech and body.

12.36 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ bṛhadvratadharo brāhmaṇo'gniriva jvalan | madbhaktastīvratapasā dagdhakarmāśayo'malaḥ ||

Keeping the great vow in this way, the brahmin shines like fire; my devotee, through intense austerity, burns away the store of past actions and becomes pure.

Austerity (tapas) here means discipline, not punishing or harming the body; not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Sustained discipline with devotion clears old patterns. People who live this way often seem to glow with a quiet strength.

Krishna tells Uddhava what becomes of the student who keeps the great vow with devotion.

12.37 Krishna to Uddhava

athānantaramāvekṣyanyathājijñāsitāgamaḥ | gurave dakṣiṇāṃ dattvā snāyādgurvanumoditaḥ ||

Then, having studied the scriptures as he wished and intending to enter the next stage, he should give the teacher his fee and, with the teacher's leave, take the ritual bath of completion.

Meaning today and context

Finishing one phase well means thanking those who taught us and moving on with their blessing.

Krishna tells Uddhava how the student completes his studies and leaves the teacher.

12.38 Krishna to Uddhava

gṛhaṃ vanaṃ vopaviśetpravrajedvā dvijottamaḥ | āśramādāśramaṃ gacchennānyathāmatparaścaret ||

The twice-born may then enter household life or the forest, or renounce. He should go from one stage to the next; one devoted to me should not act otherwise.

Renunciation here is a traditional stage of life, not advice to abandon parents, spouse, children or work; for most people it means inner detachment while caring for those who depend on them.

Meaning today and context

Life moves in stages, and each should be lived fully before the next. Jumping stages or living outside any order leads to confusion.

Krishna tells Uddhava the student may enter household life, forest life or renunciation, moving from stage to stage.

12.39 Krishna to Uddhava

gṛhārthī sadṛśīṃ bhāryāmudvahedajugupsitām | yavīyasīṃ tu vayasā yaṃ savarṇāmanu kramāt ||

One who wants a household should marry a suitable wife of good repute, younger in age and of the same varna; others only in due order.

These marriage rules (same varna, wife younger) reflect their time, not the app's view. They must never be used to oppose inter-caste marriage, pressure anyone's choice of partner, or rank people by birth; adults are free to choose their partners under Indian law.

Meaning today and context

The lasting point is choosing a partner who suits you; the specific rules belong to their time.

Krishna tells Uddhava whom a man entering household life should marry, by the norms of the time.

12.40 Krishna to Uddhava

ijyādhyayanadānāni sarveṣāṃ ca dvijanmanām | pratigraho'dhyāpanaṃ ca brāhmaṇasyaiva yājanam ||

Sacrifice, study and giving are for all the twice-born; receiving gifts, teaching, and officiating at sacrifices for others belong to the brahmin alone.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

Worship, learning and giving are presented as everyone's duty; the rest is the division of priestly work in its time.

Krishna tells Uddhava the duties shared by all the twice-born and those reserved for brahmins.

12.41 Krishna to Uddhava

pratigrahaṃ manyamānastapastejoyaśonudam | anyābhyāmeva jīveta śilairvā doṣadṛktayoḥ ||

Considering that accepting gifts wears away austerity, spiritual vigour and good name, he should live by the other two, or, if he sees fault in those too, by gleaning leftover grain.

Not financial advice. Accepting help or support in need is not wrong; the verse is about a renunciate ideal of independence.

Meaning today and context

Taking things for free can quietly cost us our independence and self-respect. Earning by honest work, however simple, keeps the mind clean.

Krishna tells Uddhava that a brahmin who sees receiving gifts as harmful to his austerity should live by teaching and officiating, or by gleaning grain.

12.42 Krishna to Uddhava

brāhmaṇasya hi deho'yaṃ kṣudrakāmāya neṣyate | kṛcchrāya tapase ceha pretyānantasukhāya ca ||

The brahmin's body is not meant for petty desires, but for hardship and austerity here, and endless happiness hereafter.

Austerity means discipline, not harming or depriving the body; not medical advice. The verse speaks of the brahmin's ideal, which is by conduct, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

A life given to small pleasures misses its larger purpose. Choosing harder, meaningful work over easy comfort brings a deeper and longer-lasting joy.

Krishna tells Uddhava what a brahmin's life is for: not petty pleasures, but austerity and lasting joy.

12.43 Krishna to Uddhava

śiloñchavṛttyā parituṣṭacitto dharmaṃ mahāntaṃ virajaṃ juṣāṇaḥ | mayyarpitātmā gṛha eva tiṣṭhannātiprasaktaḥ samupaiti śāntim ||

Content at heart with living by gleaning, practising the great, stainless dharma, with his self offered to me, he stays at home, not overly attached, and attains peace.

Meaning today and context

You don't have to leave home to find peace. Contentment with a simple, honest living, a life offered to something higher, and not clinging too hard are enough.

Krishna tells Uddhava that even a householder, content with a simple livelihood and offering himself to God, attains peace.

12.44 Krishna to Uddhava

samuddharanti ye vipraṃ sīdantaṃ matparāyaṇam | tānuddhariṣye na cirādāpadbhyo naurivārṇavāt ||

Those who lift up a struggling brahmin devoted to me, I will soon lift out of their own troubles, as a boat carries one across the sea.

Helping anyone in need is good regardless of their birth; 'brahmin' here means one devoted to God, by conduct, not caste.

Meaning today and context

Helping someone who is struggling, especially one who lives for good, comes back to us. Compassion in action is itself a refuge.

Krishna promises Uddhava that those who help a devotee in distress will themselves be rescued by him.

12.45 Krishna to Uddhava

sarvāḥ samuddharedrājā piteva vyasanātprajāḥ | ātmānamātmanā dhīro yathā gajapatirgajān ||

A king should lift all his subjects out of distress as a father would, and the wise one should lift himself by himself, as the lord of a herd lifts the elephants.

Meaning today and context

Anyone responsible for others, a parent, a manager, a leader, should care for them in hard times like a parent. And each of us must also do the work of lifting ourselves.

Krishna tells Uddhava the king's duty to rescue his people from distress, and the wise person's duty to lift himself.

12.46 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃvidho narapatirvimānenārkavarcasā | vidhūyehāśubhaṃ kṛtsnamindreṇa saha modate ||

A ruler like this, shaking off all wrongdoing here, rejoices with Indra in a celestial chariot bright as the sun.

Meaning today and context

Leaders who protect people in their distress are honoured, in this life and beyond. Caring leadership is its own reward.

Krishna tells Uddhava the reward of such a protecting king.

12.47 Krishna to Uddhava

sīdanvipro vaṇigvṛttyā paṇyairevāpadaṃ taret | khaḍgena vāpadākrānto na śvavṛttyā kathañcana ||

A brahmin in distress may get through the crisis by trade, selling goods, or, if overwhelmed by calamity, by the sword, but never by a dog's life of servility.

'The sword' is an old way of naming a warrior's livelihood, not a licence for violence. Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

In hard times it is fine to change your line of work, but not at the cost of self-respect. Earn by honest work, even unfamiliar work, rather than by grovelling.

Krishna begins telling Uddhava what livelihood each group may take up in an emergency (apad-dharma), starting with the brahmin.

12.48 Krishna to Uddhava

vaiśyavṛttyā tu rājanyo jīvenmṛgayayāpadi | caredvā viprarūpeṇa na śvavṛttyā kathañcana ||

A kshatriya in distress may live by the vaishya's livelihood or by hunting, or work in the way of a brahmin, but never by a dog's life of servility.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

The same rule for everyone: adapt when you must, but never sell your dignity.

Krishna continues the emergency rules for Uddhava, now for the kshatriya.

12.49 Krishna to Uddhava

śūdravṛttiṃ bhajedvaiśyaḥ śūdraḥ kārukaṭakriyām | kṛcchrānmukto na garhyeṇa vṛttiṃ lipseta karmaṇā ||

A vaishya may take up the shudra's work, and a shudra the craftsman's work such as weaving mats. Once freed from hardship, no one should seek a living by blameworthy work.

Varna here means one's role and inclination, as this text itself says (conduct marks the varna, UG.12.13); it must never be read as birth-based caste or used to rank, exclude or demean anyone. No honest work is shameful in itself. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Emergency measures are for emergencies. When the crisis passes, return to work you can be proud of, rather than settling into compromises made out of need.

Krishna completes the emergency rules for Uddhava: the vaishya may do service work and the shudra crafts; once out of hardship, none should keep earning by blameworthy work.

12.50 Krishna to Uddhava

vedādhyāyasvadhāsvāhā balyannādyairyathodayam | devarṣipitṛbhūtāni madrūpāṇyanvahaṃ yajet ||

By study of the Veda, offerings to ancestors and to the gods, food-offerings to creatures and food for people, each according to his means, he should daily worship the gods, sages, ancestors and beings, who are my forms.

Meaning today and context

Each day, give something back: to learning, to those who came before, to other people, and to animals, as much as you can afford. All of them are worthy of reverence.

Krishna tells Uddhava the householder's daily offerings to gods, sages, ancestors and all beings, seen as his own forms (the five daily sacrifices).

12.51 Krishna to Uddhava

yadṛcchayopapannena śuklenopārjitena vā | dhanenāpīḍayanbhṛtyānnyāyenaivāharetkratūn ||

With wealth that comes on its own or that is honestly earned, and without causing hardship to his dependants, he should perform sacrifices only by fair means.

Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Generosity and religious giving must come from honest money and must not squeeze your family or employees. Charity that hurts those you are responsible for is not dharma.

Krishna tells Uddhava how a householder should fund worship: with honestly earned wealth, never by oppressing those who depend on him.

12.52 Krishna to Uddhava

kuṭumbeṣu na sajjeta na pramādyetkuṭumbyapi | vipaścinnaśvaraṃ paśyedadṛṣṭamapi dṛṣṭavat ||

He should not be attached to his family, nor, though a family man, be careless. The wise one should see that even unseen rewards, like heaven, perish just as seen things do.

Meaning today and context

Love and look after your family fully, but don't cling as if they were yours to keep forever. Everything we gain, here or hereafter, passes; seeing this makes love freer.

Krishna tells Uddhava how a householder should hold his family: caring but not clinging, and seeing all gains, even heavenly ones, as passing.

12.53 Krishna to Uddhava

putradārāptabandhūnāṃ saṅgamaḥ pānthasaṅgamaḥ | anudehaṃ viyantyete svapno nidrānugo yathā ||

The coming together of sons, wife, close friends and relatives is like a meeting of travellers on the road. With each body they part, as a dream passes with sleep.

For someone grieving, acknowledge the loss first: the verse does not dismiss mourning or say love doesn't matter. If grief feels unbearable, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The people we love are fellow travellers for a while. Remembering this can make us treasure the time together and hold on less fiercely.

Krishna tells Uddhava that family ties are like the meeting of travellers on a road, parting with each body.

12.54 Krishna to Uddhava

itthaṃ parimṛśanmukto gṛheṣvatithivadvasan | na gṛhairanubadhyeta nirmamo nirahaṅkṛtaḥ ||

Reflecting like this, he is free; living at home like a guest, without 'mine' and without ego, he is not bound by his household.

Living 'like a guest' does not mean withdrawing from family duties or care; it means caring without possessiveness.

Meaning today and context

Living at home 'like a guest' means caring, contributing and enjoying, without treating people and things as possessions. That is freedom inside family life.

Krishna tells Uddhava that one who reflects this way lives at home like a guest, free and unbound.

12.55 Krishna to Uddhava

karmabhirgṛhamedhīyairiṣṭvā māmeva bhaktimān | tiṣṭhedvanaṃ vopaviśetprajāvānvā parivrajet ||

Having worshipped me with devotion through the householder's duties, he may remain at home, or go to the forest, or, if he has children, take to renunciation.

Renunciation here is a traditional stage of life, not advice to abandon parents, spouse, children or work; for most people it means inner detachment while caring for those who depend on them.

Meaning today and context

Household duties done with devotion are themselves worship. Later in life one may step back, but the choice comes after responsibilities are met.

Krishna tells Uddhava the householder's later choices: remain at home, go to the forest, or, if he has children, renounce.

12.56 Krishna to Uddhava

yastvāsaktamatirgehe putravittaiṣaṇāturaḥ | straiṇaḥ kṛpaṇadhīrmūḍho mamāhamiti badhyate ||

But one whose mind clings to the home, tormented by craving for sons and wealth, ruled by desire for women, miserly in outlook and deluded, is bound by the thought 'I and mine'.

'Ruled by desire for women' is about one's own craving, never blame of women. Wanting a family and a livelihood is not wrong; the verse is about obsessive clinging.

Meaning today and context

The trap is not family or money themselves but the anxious grip of 'me and mine' on them. That grip makes us small, fearful and unfree.

Krishna describes to Uddhava the householder who is bound: obsessed with home, sons and money, and caught in 'me and mine'.

12.57 Krishna to Uddhava

aho me pitarau vṛddhau bhāryā bālātmajātmajāḥ | anāthā māmṛte dīnāḥ kathaṃ jīvanti duḥkhitāḥ ||

'Alas, my parents are old, my wife has a little child, my children are young. Without me they will be helpless and wretched; how will they live in their misery?'

Caring for aged parents, a spouse and children is a real duty; the verse is not advice to neglect them. It is about anxious clinging. If such worries come with thoughts of dying or overwhelm you, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Many of us carry this exact worry. The verse does not mock caring for family; it shows how the belief 'everything depends on me' turns love into constant anxiety.

Krishna voices for Uddhava the anxious thoughts of the attached householder about his dependants.

12.58 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ gṛhāśayākṣipta hṛdayo mūḍhadhīrayam | atṛptastānanudhyāyanmṛto'ndhaṃ viśate tamaḥ ||

His heart thus carried away by thoughts of home, deluded, never satisfied, brooding on them, he dies and enters blind darkness.

Not a judgement on anyone who died worrying about their family, and not to be said to someone grieving. If you are thinking about death, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A life spent only in anxious worry about one's own people never finds rest. The alternative is not to stop caring, but to care with trust, and to make room for what is deeper.

Krishna tells Uddhava the end of the attached householder: never satisfied, he dies thinking of them and enters darkness.
