Chapter 13 (Bhāgavata 11.18)

13.1 Krishna to Uddhava

vanaṃ vivikṣuḥ putreṣu bhāryāṃ nyasya sahaiva vā | vana eva vasecchāntastṛtīyaṃ bhāgamāyuṣaḥ ||

One who wishes to go to the forest should leave his wife in the care of his sons, or take her with him, and live peacefully in the forest for the third part of his life.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The verse pictures a stage of life after household duties, when one steps back to a quieter, simpler life, and it does so while making sure the spouse is cared for. Today it can mean consciously letting go of control as children take over, and turning inward in later years.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), begins with the third stage of life, vānaprastha, the forest-dweller.

13.2 Krishna to Uddhava

kandamūlaphalairvanyairmedhyairvṛttiṃ prakalpayet | vasīta valkalaṃ vāsastṛṇaparṇājināni vā ||

He should make his living on pure forest tubers, roots and fruits, and wear bark, or grass, leaves or deerskin.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

The point is a radically simple life that needs little from others. One can take from it the value of reducing wants, without copying the details.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes how the forest-dweller should live.

13.3 Krishna to Uddhava

keśaromanakhaśmaśru malāni bibhṛyāddataḥ | na dhāvedapsu majjeta tri kālaṃ sthaṇḍileśayaḥ ||

He should leave his head hair, body hair, nails and beard, and the dirt of his body, uncared for, and not clean his teeth; he should bathe in water three times a day and sleep on the bare ground.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

This is a rule of ancient asceticism, meant to show indifference to the body's appearance. It is not a model for personal care today.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), lists the forest-dweller's bodily observances.

13.4 Krishna to Uddhava

grīṣme tapyeta pañcāgnīnvarṣāsvāsāraṣāḍjale | ākaṇṭhamagnaḥ śiśira evaṃ vṛttastapaścaret ||

In summer he should practise austerity amid five fires; in the rains, bearing the downpour in the open; in winter, standing in water up to the neck. Living thus, he should practise tapas.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

This is the classical picture of extreme austerity. Its lasting idea is endurance and discipline, not exposing oneself to harm.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the austerities of the forest-dweller through the seasons.

13.5 Krishna to Uddhava

agnipakvaṃ samaśnīyātkālapakvamathāpi vā | ulūkhalāśmakuṭṭo vā dantolūkhala eva vā ||

He may eat what has been cooked on a fire, or what has ripened with time; he may pound it with a mortar or a stone, or use his teeth as the mortar.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

A detail of the forest life: food is taken simply, with whatever means are at hand.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), continues with the forest-dweller's food.

13.6 Krishna to Uddhava

svayaṃ sañcinuyātsarvamātmano vṛttikāraṇam | deśakālabalābhijño nādadītānyadāhṛtam ||

He should himself gather everything he needs to live, knowing the place, the season and his own strength; he should not accept what others have brought.

Meaning today and context

Self-reliance, matched to one's real situation and strength, keeps a person free and dignified. It also asks us to know our limits rather than overreach.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says the forest-dweller should be self-reliant.

13.7 Krishna to Uddhava

vanyaiścarupuroḍāśairnirvapetkālacoditān | na tu śrautena paśunā māṃ yajeta vanāśramī ||

With caru and puroḍāśa cakes made from forest produce he should make the offerings that the season calls for; but the forest-dweller should not worship me with the animal sacrifice of the Vedic rites.

Meaning today and context

Krishna sets aside animal sacrifice for the forest-dweller and asks for simple offerings of what grows. Worship does not need harm to any living being.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the forest-dweller's offerings.

13.8 Krishna to Uddhava

agnihotraṃ ca darśaśca paurṇamāsaśca pūrvavat | cāturmāsyāni ca munerāmnātāni ca naigamaiḥ ||

The agnihotra, the new-moon and full-moon rites as before, and the four-monthly rites too, are prescribed for the sage by those who know the Veda.

Meaning today and context

A list of Vedic observances kept up in the forest stage; it shows the continuity of discipline from household to forest life.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), lists the rites the forest-dweller continues.

13.9 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ cīrṇena tapasā munirdhamanisantataḥ | māṃ tapomayamārādhya ṛṣilokādupaiti mām ||

By austerity practised in this way, the sage, worn so thin that his veins show, worships me, who am the very form of tapas, and from the world of the seers comes to me.

This describes ancient ascetic practice, told faithfully. It is not health, hygiene or dietary advice; exposing the body to heat, cold or hunger can be dangerous. Discipline does not mean punishing the body.

Meaning today and context

The verse ties austerity to devotion: the discipline is worth something because it is offered to God. What matters is the turning of life toward the highest, not the thinness of the body.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), states the result of the forest-dweller's austerity.

13.10 Krishna to Uddhava

yastvetatkṛcchrataścīrṇaṃ tapo niḥśreyasaṃ mahat | kāmāyālpīyase yuñjyādbāliśaḥ ko'parastataḥ ||

But whoever uses this great austerity, practised with such hardship and able to bring the highest good, for some petty desire, who could be a greater fool than he?

Meaning today and context

Years of effort and discipline can be cashed in for something small, or kept for what truly matters. Before spending your best energy, ask what you are really spending it on.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), warns against spending hard-won austerity on small wishes.

13.11 Krishna to Uddhava

yadāsau niyame'kalpo jarayā jātavepathuḥ | ātmanyagnīnsamāropya maccitto'gniṃ samāviśet ||

When he is no longer able to keep the observances and trembles with old age, he should place the sacred fires within himself and, with his mind on me, enter the fire.

This verse describes an ancient rite and is never guidance to harm or end one's life, at any age or in any illness. If you or someone you know is thinking of ending their life, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7).

Meaning today and context

This records an ancient rite at the end of the forest-dweller's life and is told here only as history. Its one usable thought is to keep the mind on God as strength fails.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes what the aged forest-dweller did in the ancient rite when he could no longer keep the rules.

13.12 Krishna to Uddhava

yadā karmavipākeṣu lokeṣu nirayātmasu | virāgo jāyate samyaṅnyastāgniḥ pravrajettataḥ ||

When true dispassion arises toward the worlds that are only the ripening of karma, hellish at heart, then he should lay down the fires and go forth as a renunciant.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Renunciation is to follow real dispassion, not precede it. Big inner changes are meant to grow from within, not be put on from outside.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), turns to the fourth stage, sannyāsa, and says when one may take it.

13.13 Krishna to Uddhava

iṣṭvā yathopadeśaṃ māṃ dattvā sarvasvamṛtvije | agnīnsvaprāṇa āveśya nirapekṣaḥ parivrajet ||

Having worshipped me as instructed and given all his possessions to the officiating priest, he should take the fires into his own breath and, wanting nothing, wander forth.

Giving away all one's property is part of the renunciant's rite in its time; it is not financial advice and never a reason to leave dependants unprovided for. Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The outer fires become the inner life-breath, and possessions are given away: the renunciant carries nothing but his own life offered to God. The lasting idea is to hold what we have lightly.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the rite of taking sannyāsa.

13.14 Krishna to Uddhava

viprasya vai sannyasato devā dārādirūpiṇaḥ | vighnānkurvantyayaṃ hyasmānākramya samiyātparam ||

When a brahmin renounces, the gods, taking the form of his wife and others, put obstacles in his way, thinking: 'He will pass beyond us and reach the Supreme.'

This reflects the renunciate view of its time; it must never be used to blame a wife or family, or to treat loved ones as obstacles. Caste words like 'brahmin' are by conduct, never birth.

Meaning today and context

A traditional way of saying that the ties of home pull hardest at the moment of a big inner step. It speaks of one's own attachments, not of family as an enemy.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says the renunciant meets obstacles.

13.15 Krishna to Uddhava

bibhṛyāccenmunirvāsaḥ kaupīnācchādanaṃ param | tyaktaṃ na daṇḍapātrābhyāmanyatkiñcidanāpadi ||

If the sage wears clothing at all, it should be no more than a loincloth to cover himself; except in an emergency, he should keep nothing that he has given up, other than his staff and bowl.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The renunciant keeps the barest minimum. Note that the rule bends in an emergency: the text does not ask for needless hardship.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), gives the renunciant's rule on possessions.

13.16 Krishna to Uddhava

dṛṣṭipūtaṃ nyasetpādaṃ vastrapūtaṃ pibejjalam | satyapūtāṃ vadedvācaṃ manaḥpūtaṃ samācaret ||

He should set down his foot where his eyes have made it safe, drink water purified through a cloth, speak words purified by truth, and do what his mind has purified.

Meaning today and context

Look before you step, check before you take in, test your words against truth, and let your actions pass through a clear conscience first. It is a simple, complete rule of careful living.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), gives the renunciant's rules of care in walking, drinking, speaking and acting, a well-known verse.

13.17 Krishna to Uddhava

maunānīhānilāyāmā daṇḍā vāgdehacetasām | na hyete yasya santyaṅga veṇubhirna bhavedyatiḥ ||

Silence, freedom from craving activity, and control of the breath are the staffs that restrain speech, body and mind. Dear friend, one who does not have these does not become a renunciant just by carrying bamboo staffs.

Breath control is mentioned as an inner discipline; any breathing practice should be learned from a qualified teacher and is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Robes, symbols and titles mean nothing without inner discipline over speech, action and mind. The test of any spiritual life is what has changed inside.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says what really makes a renunciant: the inner staffs, not the outer bamboo ones.

13.18 Krishna to Uddhava

bhikṣāṃ caturṣu varṇeṣu vigarhyānvarjayaṃścaret | saptāgārānasaṅkḷptāṃstuṣyellabdhena tāvatā ||

He should beg for alms among all four varṇas, avoiding only those of condemned conduct, at seven houses not chosen in advance, and be content with whatever he gets from them.

Varṇa and āśrama are read here as one's role and stage of life, by conduct and inclination, never by birth; this must never be used to rank or exclude anyone. 'Condemned' here refers to conduct. Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

The renunciant takes from anyone, without choosing in advance, and is content with what comes. The heart of it is contentment and not picking and choosing who is worthy of us.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), gives the renunciant's rule for alms.

13.19 Krishna to Uddhava

bahirjalāśayaṃ gatvā tatropaspṛśya vāgyataḥ | vibhajya pāvitaṃ śeṣaṃ bhuñjītāśeṣamāhṛtam ||

Going outside the village to a pool, washing there and keeping silent, he should share out a portion, sanctify the rest, and eat all that he brought, keeping nothing back.

Meaning today and context

Share first, eat in silence and gratitude, and do not hoard for tomorrow. These small habits keep the mind free of anxious storing.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), continues the rule for eating alms.

13.20 Krishna to Uddhava

ekaścarenmahīmetāṃ niḥsaṅgaḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ | ātmakrīḍa ātmarata ātmavānsamadarśanaḥ ||

Alone, free of attachment, senses restrained, he should wander this earth, playing in the Self, delighting in the Self, steady in himself, seeing all with an equal eye.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Joy that comes from within does not depend on company or circumstance. Being at ease in one's own company and seeing others equally is a strength, not loneliness.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the renunciant's inner state as he wanders.

13.21 Krishna to Uddhava

viviktakṣemaśaraṇo madbhāvavimalāśayaḥ | ātmānaṃ cintayedekamabhedena mayā muniḥ ||

With a quiet, safe, solitary place as his shelter and his heart made clear by love of me, the sage should contemplate the one Self as not different from me.

Meaning today and context

A quiet place and a heart softened by devotion are the ground for meditation. The meditation itself is on the one Self that is not separate from God.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says how the renunciant should meditate.

13.22 Krishna to Uddhava

anvīkṣetātmano bandhaṃ mokṣaṃ ca jñānaniṣṭhayā | bandha indriyavikṣepo mokṣa eṣāṃ ca saṃyamaḥ ||

Through steady knowledge he should examine his own bondage and liberation: bondage is the scattering of the senses, and liberation is their restraint.

Meaning today and context

Bondage is not a place but a habit: attention pulled in every direction by the senses. Each time you gather it back, you taste a little freedom.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), defines bondage and liberation.

13.23 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmānniyamya ṣaḍvargaṃ madbhāvena carenmuniḥ | viraktaḥ kṣudrakāmebhyo labdhvātmani sukhaṃ mahat ||

Therefore, restraining the group of six (the five senses and the mind), the sage should live absorbed in me, turned away from petty desires, having found great happiness within himself.

Meaning today and context

Small desires lose their grip when a larger happiness is found within. Restraint works best not as fighting but as finding something better.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), draws the conclusion from the definition of bondage.

13.24 Krishna to Uddhava

puragrāmavrajānsārthānbhikṣārthaṃ praviśaṃścaret | puṇyadeśasaricchaila vanāśramavatīṃ mahīm ||

Entering towns, villages, cowherd camps and caravans only to beg, he should wander the earth with its holy places, rivers, mountains, forests and hermitages.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

A picture of the wandering life: among people only for necessities, otherwise in sacred and natural places.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes where the renunciant wanders.

13.25 Krishna to Uddhava

vānaprasthāśramapadeṣvabhīkṣṇaṃ bhaikṣyamācaret | saṃsidhyatyāśvasammohaḥ śuddhasattvaḥ śilāndhasā ||

He should often seek alms in the hermitages of forest-dwellers; for, made pure in mind by food gleaned from the fields, he is quickly freed of delusion and reaches perfection.

Not dietary advice.

Meaning today and context

The text holds that what we take in, and from whom, shapes the mind. Today one can read it as choosing honest sources and good company for what feeds us.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), advises the renunciant to seek alms among forest-dwellers.

13.26 Krishna to Uddhava

naitadvastutayā paśyeddṛśyamānaṃ vinaśyati | asaktacitto viramedihāmutracikīrṣitāt ||

He should not take this world as ultimately real: whatever is seen perishes. With a mind unattached, he should cease from all he wishes to do for this world and the next.

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by what passes; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Everything we can see passes, so it cannot bear the full weight of our hopes. Holding plans for this life and the next loosely frees us from anxious striving.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says how the renunciant should regard the visible world.

13.27 Krishna to Uddhava

yadetadātmani jaganmanovākprāṇasaṃhatam | sarvaṃ māyeti tarkeṇa svasthastyaktvā na tatsmaret ||

This world, which appears in the Self and is put together by mind, speech and breath, is all māyā. Knowing this by reasoning, resting in himself, he should let it go and not dwell on it.

Calling the world unreal is about not being ruled by what passes; it is never a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment.

Meaning today and context

Much of what troubles us is built by our own mind and words. Seeing this clearly, we can step back into ourselves and stop replaying it.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), continues: the world as māyā.

13.28 Krishna to Uddhava

jñānaniṣṭho virakto vā madbhakto vānapekṣakaḥ | saliṅgānāśramāṃstyaktvā caredavidhigocaraḥ ||

One established in knowledge, or truly dispassionate, or my devotee who wants nothing, may leave the āśramas with their outward marks and live beyond the reach of rules.

Renunciation and forest life here are the ideal of their time for one who has finished household duties; they are not advice to abandon a spouse, children, ageing parents or work. For most people they mean inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Rules and outward forms are aids, and for those who have truly arrived they fall away. This is not permission to drop discipline before it has done its work.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), speaks of those who go beyond the rules of the āśramas.

13.29 Krishna to Uddhava

budho bālakavatkrīḍetkuśalo jaḍavaccaret | vadedunmattavadvidvāngocaryāṃ naigamaścaret ||

Though wise, he should play like a child; though skilful, move about like a dull man; though learned, talk like a madman; though versed in the Veda, live without fixed ways, like cattle.

Meaning today and context

The knower has no need to display what he knows. Freedom from the need to be seen as wise is itself a sign of wisdom.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes how the knower hides his attainment.

13.30 Krishna to Uddhava

vedavādarato na syānna pāṣaṇḍī na haitukaḥ | śuṣkavādavivāde na kañcitpakṣaṃ samāśrayet ||

He should not be fond of arguing over the Veda, nor be a scoffer at it, nor a mere logic-chopper; in dry debates and wrangling he should take no side.

Meaning today and context

Endless arguments about religion, for or against, rarely change anyone and drain the one arguing. Stepping out of dry debate keeps the mind free for what matters.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), warns against religious disputation.

13.31 Krishna to Uddhava

nodvijeta janāddhīro janaṃ codvejayenna tu | ativādāṃstitikṣeta nāvamanyeta kañcana | dehamuddiśya paśuvadvairaṃ kuryānna kenacit ||

The steady one should neither be upset by people nor upset them; he should bear harsh words, look down on no one, and for the sake of this body make enemies of no one, as animals do.

Bearing harsh words calmly is not a call to stay in abuse or danger. If you face abuse or threats, seek help: police 112, women's helpline 181.

Meaning today and context

Do not let others shake you, and do not shake others. Bearing harsh words and refusing to hold enmity over bodily things is a calm, strong way to live with people.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), teaches the renunciant how to live among people.

13.32 Krishna to Uddhava

eka eva paro hyātmā bhūteṣvātmanyavasthitaḥ | yathendurudapātreṣu bhūtānyekātmakāni ca ||

The one supreme Self alone dwells in all beings and in oneself; as the one moon is reflected in many pots of water, so all beings have one Self.

Meaning today and context

The same light looks out through every face. Remembering this makes contempt and hatred harder and kindness easier.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), gives the ground for not hating anyone: the one Self.

13.33 Krishna to Uddhava

alabdhvā na viṣīdeta kāle kāle'śanaṃ kvacit | labdhvā na hṛṣyeddhṛtimānubhayaṃ daivatantritam ||

If at times he gets no food, he should not be downcast; if he gets it, he should not be elated. Steady, he knows that both are in the hands of providence.

Meaning today and context

Gain and loss both come and go, much of it beyond our control. Not riding too high or sinking too low with them keeps the mind steady.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), teaches equanimity about food and gain.

13.34 Krishna to Uddhava

āhārārthaṃ samīheta yuktaṃ tatprāṇadhāraṇam | tattvaṃ vimṛśyate tena tadvijñāya vimucyate ||

He should make an effort for food, for it is right to sustain life; by that life truth is reflected on, and knowing truth one is freed.

Meaning today and context

Even the renunciant is told to look after his body, because life is what makes understanding possible. Caring for your health is part of the spiritual path, not opposed to it.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says the renunciant should still take care to keep alive.

13.35 Krishna to Uddhava

yadṛcchayopapannānnamadyācchreṣṭhamutāparam | tathā vāsastathā śayyāṃ prāptaṃ prāptaṃ bhajenmuniḥ ||

Whatever food comes by itself he should eat, fine or poor; so too with clothing and bed, the sage should accept whatever comes.

Meaning today and context

Not insisting on the best of everything takes away a great deal of daily irritation. Accepting what comes, fine or plain, is a quiet form of freedom.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), teaches contentment with whatever comes.

13.36 Krishna to Uddhava

śaucamācamanaṃ snānaṃ na tu codanayā caret | anyāṃśca niyamāñjñānī yathāhaṃ līlayeśvaraḥ ||

The knower keeps purity, sipping water, bathing and the other observances, not because he is commanded to, but as I, the Lord, act: in play.

Meaning today and context

For one who understands, good habits are kept freely and lightly, not out of fear of breaking rules.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says how the knower keeps outer observances.

13.37 Krishna to Uddhava

na hi tasya vikalpākhyā yā ca madvīkṣayā hatā | ādehāntātkvacitkhyātistataḥ sampadyate mayā ||

For him there is no sense of separateness, for it has been destroyed by seeing me; and if some appearance of it lingers until the body falls, after that he becomes one with me.

Meaning today and context

Deep understanding removes the feeling of being cut off from everything, even if traces of the old habit remain for a while.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), describes the knower's state.

13.38 Krishna to Uddhava

duḥkhodarkeṣu kāmeṣu jātanirveda ātmavān | ajijñāsitamaddharmo muniṃ gurumupavrajet ||

One who is self-controlled and has grown weary of desires whose end is sorrow, but has not yet inquired into my dharma, should approach a sage as his guru.

Meaning today and context

When pleasures have stopped satisfying and you do not know what next, it is time to find a real teacher. Weariness can be the beginning of a search.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), turns to the seeker who has not yet found knowledge: go to a teacher.

13.39 Krishna to Uddhava

tāvatparicaredbhaktaḥ śraddhāvānanasūyakaḥ | yāvadbrahma vijānīyānmāmeva gurumādṛtaḥ ||

The devotee, full of faith and free of envy, should serve the guru, honouring him as myself, until he comes to know Brahman.

Honouring a true teacher is not blind obedience. No genuine guru demands money, sexual favours or control over your life; if anyone does, step away and seek help.

Meaning today and context

Learning anything deep needs trust, respect and patience with a teacher, and freedom from envy. The aim is understanding, not dependence.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says how the disciple should serve the guru.

13.40 Krishna to Uddhava

yastvasaṃyataṣaḍvargaḥ pracaṇḍendriyasārathiḥ | jñānavairāgyarahitastridaṇḍamupajīvati ||

But one who has not mastered the six, whose senses as charioteer run wild, who lacks both knowledge and dispassion, and who lives off the renunciant's triple staff,

Meaning today and context

Wearing the outer signs of spirituality while the senses run the show, and using them for a living, is a serious self-deception. It is a warning for the seeker and a test for judging teachers.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), begins a warning about the false renunciant (continued in the next verse).

13.41 Krishna to Uddhava

surānātmānamātmasthaṃ nihnute māṃ ca dharmahā | avipakvakaṣāyo'smādamuṣmācca vihīyate ||

such a destroyer of dharma deceives the gods, his own self and me who dwell in it; his inner impurities still unripe, he loses both this world and the next.

Meaning today and context

Pretence cheats oneself most of all. One who wears a spiritual role without inner change loses both worldly honesty and the spiritual goal.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), completes the warning about the false renunciant.

13.42 Krishna to Uddhava

bhikṣordharmaḥ śamo'hiṃsā tapa īkṣā vanaukasaḥ | gṛhiṇo bhūtarakṣejyā dvijasyācāryasevanam ||

The renunciant's dharma is calm and non-violence; the forest-dweller's, austerity and contemplation; the householder's, protecting living beings and worship; the student's, serving the teacher.

Varṇa and āśrama are read here as one's role and stage of life, by conduct and inclination, never by birth; this must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Each stage of life has its own central duty: the student learns, the householder protects and gives, the retired reflects, the renunciant keeps peace and harms none. Knowing which stage you are in tells you what to focus on.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), summarises the chief duty of each āśrama.

13.43 Krishna to Uddhava

brahmacaryaṃ tapaḥ śaucaṃ santoṣo bhūtasauhṛdam | gṛhasthasyāpyṛtau gantuḥ sarveṣāṃ madupāsanam ||

Self-restraint, austerity, purity, contentment and friendliness to all beings, even for the householder who goes to his wife only at the proper season; and for all, worship of me.

Brahmacarya for the householder means self-restraint within a marriage, as understood in its time; it is not a demand for celibacy or a rule over a couple's private life.

Meaning today and context

Some virtues belong to everyone, whatever their stage: restraint, discipline, cleanliness, contentment, goodwill to all, and turning to God.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), names the virtues common to all āśramas.

13.44 Krishna to Uddhava

iti māṃ yaḥ svadharmeṇa bhajennityamananyabhāk | sarvabhūteṣu madbhāvo madbhaktiṃ vindate dṛḍhām ||

Whoever thus worships me always through his own dharma, devoted to no other, feeling my presence in all beings, gains firm devotion to me.

Meaning today and context

Your ordinary duties, done as an offering and with a sense of God in everyone you meet, become devotion itself. There is no need to leave your life to find God.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), says where duty done in devotion leads.

13.45 Krishna to Uddhava

bhaktyoddhavānapāyinyā sarvalokamaheśvaram | sarvotpattyapyayaṃ brahma kāraṇaṃ mopayāti saḥ ||

By unfailing devotion, Uddhava, he reaches me, the great Lord of all the worlds, Brahman, the cause from which all arises and into which all returns.

Meaning today and context

Devotion that does not waver leads to the source of everything. The steadiness of love matters more than its outer form.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), continues: the fruit of unfailing devotion.

13.46 Krishna to Uddhava

iti svadharmanirṇikta sattvo nirjñātamadgatiḥ | jñānavijñānasampanno na cirātsamupaiti mām ||

Thus, his heart purified by his own dharma, having understood my nature, endowed with knowledge and its realisation, he soon reaches me.

Meaning today and context

Doing one's duties honestly cleans the heart, and a clean heart is ready to understand. Duty, knowledge and realisation are steps on one road.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), sums up the path from duty to God.

13.47 Krishna to Uddhava

varṇāśramavatāṃ dharma eṣa ācāralakṣaṇaḥ | sa eva madbhaktiyuto niḥśreyasakaraḥ paraḥ ||

This is the dharma of those in the varṇas and āśramas, defined by conduct; that same dharma, joined with devotion to me, brings the highest good.

Varṇa and āśrama are read here as one's role and stage of life, by conduct and inclination, never by birth; this must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Duties by themselves are good conduct; joined with love of God they become a path to the highest. The verse puts devotion above the rules it frames.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), states the place of varṇāśrama duty.

13.48 Krishna to Uddhava

etatte'bhihitaṃ sādho bhavānpṛcchati yacca mām | yathā svadharmasaṃyukto bhakto māṃ samiyātparam ||

This I have told you, good Uddhava, as you asked me: how a devotee who keeps to his own dharma may reach me, the Supreme.

Meaning today and context

The whole teaching on the stages of life comes back to one point: live your own duties with devotion, and that is the way.

Krishna, teaching Uddhava the duties of the āśramas (Bhāgavata 11.18), closes the account of the āśramas.
