Chapter 14 (Bhāgavata 11.19)

14.1 Krishna to Uddhava

yo vidyāśrutasampannaḥ ātmavānnānumānikaḥ | mayāmātramidaṃ jñātvā jñānaṃ ca mayi sannyaset ||

One who is rich in learning and scripture, who has realised the Self and does not rest on mere inference, knowing all this to be only māyā, should lay down even his knowledge in me.

Meaning today and context

Even knowledge can become something to be proud of. The verse asks a learned person to hold what they know lightly and offer it, rather than make it their identity.

Krishna begins a new teaching (Bhagavata 11.19) to Uddhava: the one whose knowledge is real, not merely reasoned, should offer even that knowledge to him.

14.2 Krishna to Uddhava

jñāninastvahameveṣṭaḥ svārtho hetuśca sammataḥ | svargaścaivāpavargaśca nānyo'rtho madṛte priyaḥ ||

For the man of knowledge I alone am the desired; I am held to be his aim and his means, his heaven and his liberation too. Apart from me, nothing else is dear to him.

Meaning today and context

When one thing is truly loved above all, the chase after many smaller goals falls away on its own.

Krishna describes the one who knows: for such a person Krishna himself is the only goal.

14.3 Krishna to Uddhava

jñānavijñānasaṃsiddhāḥ padaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vidurmama | jñānī priyatamo'to me jñānenāsau bibharti mām ||

Those perfected in knowledge and its realisation know my supreme state. Therefore the man of knowledge is dearest to me; by his knowledge he holds me within.

Meaning today and context

Understanding that has become lived experience carries the divine inside a person; it is not just information about God.

Krishna says those perfected in knowledge know his highest state, and the knower is dearest to him.

14.4 Krishna to Uddhava

tapastīrthaṃ japo dānaṃ pavitrāṇītarāṇi ca | nālaṃ kurvanti tāṃ siddhiṃ yā jñānakalayā kṛtā ||

Austerity, pilgrimage, repetition of mantras, charity and the other purifying acts cannot bring about the perfection that even a fraction of knowledge brings.

Meaning today and context

Rituals and good deeds have value, but they cannot replace actually understanding. A little real insight can change more than years of routine practice.

Krishna compares outward religious practices with knowledge.

14.5 Krishna to Uddhava

tasmājjñānena sahitaṃ jñātvā svātmānamuddhava | jñānavijñānasampanno bhaja māṃ bhaktibhāvataḥ ||

Therefore, Uddhava, knowing your own Self together with knowledge, and endowed with knowledge and realisation, worship me with a heart of devotion.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge and devotion are not rivals here. Understanding who you are and loving God are meant to grow together.

Krishna draws the conclusion for Uddhava: know the Self and worship him with devotion.

14.6 Krishna to Uddhava

jñānavijñānayajñena māmiṣṭvātmānamātmani | sarvayajñapatiṃ māṃ vai saṃsiddhiṃ munayo'gaman ||

By the sacrifice of knowledge and realisation, the sages worshipped me, the Self within the self, the lord of all sacrifices, and attained perfection.

Meaning today and context

The deepest offering is not a ritual fire but understanding itself, turned toward what is within.

Krishna cites the sages of old who reached perfection by the sacrifice of knowledge.

14.7 Krishna to Uddhava

tvayyuddhavāśrayati yastrividho vikāro | māyāntarāpatati nādyapavargayoryat | janmādayo'sya yadamī tava tasya kiṃ syur | ādyantayoryadasato'sti tadeva madhye ||

Uddhava, the threefold transformation that seems to rest in you is māyā; it comes in only between, being absent at the beginning and at the end. Birth and the other changes belong to it; what are they to you? Whatever is there at the beginning and end of the unreal, that alone is there in the middle.

Meaning today and context

Moods, roles and life stages come and go; what was there before them and remains after them is what you most truly are. This can give steadiness, not a reason to neglect the body or one's life.

Krishna tells Uddhava that the body-mind change he seems to undergo is māyā, not his true nature (Bhagavata 11.19.7).

14.8 Uddhava to Krishna

jñānaṃ viśuddhaṃ vipulaṃ yathaitadvairāgyavijñānayutaṃ purāṇam | ākhyāhi viśveśvara viśvamūrte tvadbhaktiyogaṃ ca mahadvimṛgyam ||

Uddhava said: Lord of the universe, whose form is the universe, explain to me this pure and vast ancient knowledge, joined with dispassion and realisation, and also the yoga of devotion to you, which even the great seek.

Meaning today and context

A sincere seeker asks for both clarity and love; Uddhava wants to understand and to be devoted.

Uddhava asks Krishna to explain pure knowledge, with dispassion and realisation, and the path of devotion.

14.9 Uddhava to Krishna

tāpatrayeṇābhihatasya ghore santapyamānasya bhavādhvanīśa | paśyāmi nānyaccharaṇaṃ tavāṅghri dvandvātapatrādamṛtābhivarṣāt ||

Struck by the three kinds of suffering and burning on the terrible road of worldly life, O Lord, I see no refuge other than your feet, an umbrella against the heat of opposites that rains down nectar.

If you feel hopeless or overwhelmed, please also reach out to people and to help: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When life's troubles pile up from every side, the heart looks for shelter. This verse is a prayer from someone who is tired and turns to God.

Uddhava describes the suffering of worldly life and says Krishna's feet are his only refuge.

14.10 Uddhava to Krishna

daṣṭaṃ janaṃ sampatitaṃ bile'sminkālāhinā kṣudrasukhorutarṣam | samuddharainaṃ kṛpayāpavargyairvacobhirāsiñca mahānubhāva ||

This person has fallen into this pit and been bitten by the serpent of time, yet still has a great thirst for petty pleasures. Lift him out in your kindness, great one, and sprinkle him with words that lead to liberation.

Meaning today and context

Even while time runs out, we keep reaching for small pleasures. Seeing this honestly is the start of asking for real help.

Uddhava pleads with Krishna to rescue people caught in worldly life with words that lead to freedom.

14.11 Krishna to Uddhava

itthametatpurā rājā bhīṣmaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ varam | ajātaśatruḥ papraccha sarveṣāṃ no'nuśṛṇvatām ||

The Lord said: In just this way, long ago, King Yudhiṣṭhira, who had no enemy, asked Bhīṣma, the best of those who uphold dharma, while all of us were listening.

Meaning today and context

Krishna connects Uddhava's question to an earlier teaching; good questions have been asked before.

Krishna replies by recalling that King Yudhiṣṭhira once asked Bhīṣma the same question.

14.12 Krishna to Uddhava

nivṛtte bhārate yuddhe suhṛnnidhanavihvalaḥ | śrutvā dharmānbahūnpaścānmokṣadharmānapṛcchata ||

When the Bhārata war was over, overcome by the death of his loved ones, he first heard many teachings on dharma, and afterwards asked about the dharma of liberation.

Grief deserves to be felt and shared; the verse does not ask anyone to hurry past mourning.

Meaning today and context

Grief after loss often turns people toward the deepest questions. Yudhiṣṭhira's sorrow was not brushed aside; it led him to ask.

Krishna explains the setting: after the Mahābhārata war, Yudhiṣṭhira, grieving his slain kin, asked Bhīṣma about liberation.

14.13 Krishna to Uddhava

tānahaṃ te'bhidhāsyāmi devavratamakhācchrutān | jñānavairāgyavijñāna śraddhābhaktyupabṛṃhitān ||

I will tell you those teachings, heard from the mouth of Devavrata (Bhīṣma), enriched with knowledge, dispassion, realisation, faith and devotion.

Meaning today and context

Wisdom is passed on from teacher to student; Krishna himself honours what he heard from an elder.

Krishna promises to tell Uddhava those teachings on liberation he heard from Bhīṣma.

14.14 Krishna to Uddhava

navaikādaśa pañca trīnbhāvānbhūteṣu yena vai | īkṣetāthaikamapyeṣu tajjñānaṃ mama niścitam ||

That by which one sees in all beings the nine, eleven, five and three principles, and then sees the One within them: that is knowledge, in my settled view.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge is not only taking things apart into their pieces; it is also seeing the one reality that runs through all of them.

Krishna defines knowledge (jñāna) in Sāṅkhya terms: the twenty-eight principles and the one behind them.

14.15 Krishna to Uddhava

etadeva hi vijñānaṃ na tathaikena yena yat | sthityutpattyapyayānpaśyedbhāvānāṃ triguṇātmanām ||

And this indeed is realisation: no longer seeing things as before, only through the One that pervades them, but seeing the arising, lasting and dissolving of all things made of the three guṇas.

Meaning today and context

Realisation means seeing clearly that everything formed also changes and passes, while understanding what does not.

Krishna defines realised knowledge (vijñāna), going beyond the definition of knowledge in the previous verse.

14.16 Krishna to Uddhava

ādāvante ca madhye ca sṛjyātsṛjyaṃ yadanviyāt | punastatpratisaṅkrāme yacchiṣyeta tadeva sat ||

That which at the beginning, the end and the middle runs through every created thing from one creation to the next, and which remains when they are withdrawn again: that alone is real.

Meaning today and context

Most of what we chase begins and ends. Asking what is present through all of it, and remains after it, is a way to find what is lasting in a life.

Krishna defines what is real: that which is present at the beginning, middle and end of every created thing.

14.17 Krishna to Uddhava

śrutiḥ pratyakṣamaitihyamanumānaṃ catuṣṭayam | pramāṇeṣvanavasthānādvikalpātsa virajyate ||

Scripture, perception, tradition and inference are the four means of knowing. Since by these means the world is found to have no fixed standing, and to be merely diverse appearance, one grows detached from it.

Meaning today and context

Looked at carefully from every angle, worldly things never stay put. Seeing this calmly loosens our grip on them.

Krishna explains how dispassion arises from seeing that the changing world has no firm footing.

14.18 Krishna to Uddhava

karmaṇāṃ pariṇāmitvādāviriñcyādamaṅgalam | vipaścinnaśvaraṃ paśyedadṛṣṭamapi dṛṣṭavat ||

Because the fruits of actions keep changing, everything up to the world of Brahmā is without lasting good. The wise should see the unseen, the heavens hoped for, as perishable, just like what is seen.

Meaning today and context

No reward, earthly or heavenly, lasts forever. Knowing this keeps us from building our whole life around a prize that will pass.

Krishna says the wise see even heavenly rewards as perishable, since all results of action change.

14.19 Krishna to Uddhava

bhaktiyogaḥ puraivoktaḥ prīyamāṇāya te'nagha | punaśca kathayiṣyāmi madbhakteḥ kāraṇaṃ paraṃ ||

I have already told you of the yoga of devotion, sinless one, because you delight in it. Again I will tell you the supreme means to devotion to me.

Meaning today and context

What we love we are glad to hear again; good teaching is often repeated, not because we forgot but because it deepens.

Krishna turns to devotion, which he has taught before, and promises to explain its highest cause again.

14.20 Krishna to Uddhava

śraddhāmṛtakathāyāṃ me śaśvanmadanukīrtanam | pariniṣṭhā ca pūjāyāṃ stutibhiḥ stavanaṃ mama ||

Faith in the nectar of my stories, constant singing of my glories, steadfastness in worship, and praising me with hymns;

मेरी अमृतमयी कथा में श्रद्धा, निरंतर मेरा कीर्तन, पूजा में दृढ़ निष्ठा, और स्तुतियों से मेरा स्तवन;

Meaning today and context

Devotion grows through simple daily habits: hearing, singing, worshipping and praising. Love deepens by spending time with what we love.

Krishna begins listing the practices that give rise to devotion.

14.21 Krishna to Uddhava

ādaraḥ paricaryāyāṃ sarvāṅgairabhivandanam | madbhaktapūjābhyadhikā sarvabhūteṣu manmatiḥ ||

Loving care in serving me, bowing down with the whole body, worshipping my devotees even more than me, and seeing me in all beings;

मेरी सेवा में आदर, सारे अंगों से प्रणाम, मेरे भक्तों की पूजा मुझसे भी बढ़कर करना, और सब प्राणियों में मुझे देखना;

Meaning today and context

Devotion is not only toward an image; it shows in how we honour good people and see the divine in every living being.

Krishna continues the list of practices that give rise to devotion.

14.22 Krishna to Uddhava

madartheṣvaṅgaceṣṭā ca vacasā madguṇeraṇam | mayyarpaṇaṃ ca manasaḥ sarvakāmavivarjanam ||

Using the body for my sake, speaking of my qualities, offering the mind to me, and giving up every selfish desire;

शरीर की चेष्टाएँ मेरे लिए करना, वाणी से मेरे गुणों का कथन, मन मुझे अर्पित करना, और सारी कामनाओं का त्याग;

Meaning today and context

Devotion brings together what we do, what we say and what we think, and turns all three in one direction.

Krishna continues the list of practices that give rise to devotion: body, speech and mind given to God.

14.23 Krishna to Uddhava

madarthe'rthaparityāgo bhogasya ca sukhasya ca | iṣṭaṃ dattaṃ hutaṃ japtaṃ madarthaṃ yadvrataṃ tapaḥ ||

Giving up wealth, enjoyment and pleasure for my sake; and whatever sacrifice, gift, offering, mantra, vow or austerity there is, doing it for me.

Giving up wealth here is an inner offering, not advice to hand over money or property to anyone who claims religious authority. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

What matters is the purpose behind our religious acts: done for God, not for show or gain, they become devotion.

Krishna completes the list: giving up wealth and pleasure for him, and doing all religious acts for his sake.

14.24 Krishna to Uddhava

evaṃ dharmairmanuṣyāṇāmuddhavātmanivedinām | mayi sañjāyate bhaktiḥ ko'nyo'rtho'syāvaśiṣyate ||

Uddhava, through such practices, in people who have offered themselves to me, devotion to me arises. What other aim is left for such a one?

Meaning today and context

When love for God has truly taken root, the restless search for something more begins to settle.

Krishna sums up: through these practices devotion arises, and nothing else remains to be gained.

14.25 Krishna to Uddhava

yadātmanyarpitaṃ cittaṃ śāntaṃ sattvopabṛṃhitam | dharmaṃ jñānaṃ sa vairāgyamaiśvaryaṃ cābhipadyate ||

When the mind is offered to the Self, peaceful and strengthened by sattva, one attains dharma, knowledge, dispassion and mastery.

Meaning today and context

A calm mind turned inward naturally becomes good, clear, free and strong; many virtues follow from where we place our attention.

Krishna contrasts a mind given to the Self with a mind scattered among sense objects (this verse and the next).

14.26 Krishna to Uddhava

yadarpitaṃ tadvikalpe indriyaiḥ paridhāvati | rajasvalaṃ cāsanniṣṭhaṃ cittaṃ viddhi viparyayam ||

But when the mind is given to the many objects of the world and runs about with the senses, full of rajas and devoted to what is unreal, know that it reaps the opposite.

Meaning today and context

A mind pulled in every direction by screens, wants and worries loses its peace and clarity. Noticing this is the first step to gathering it back.

Krishna describes the opposite: a mind given to the world of sense objects.

14.27 Krishna to Uddhava

dharmo madbhaktikṛtprokto jñānaṃ caikātmyadarśanam | guṇesvasaṅgo vairāgyamaiśvaryaṃ cāṇimādayaḥ ||

Dharma is said to be what brings about devotion to me; knowledge is seeing the oneness of the Self; dispassion is non-attachment to the guṇas; and mastery is the powers such as becoming minute.

The powers named here are what the text claims; they are not achievable feats or proof of anything. Beware of anyone who sells powers or demands money or obedience for them.

Meaning today and context

Each big word gets a working definition: right living is what deepens love, knowledge is seeing oneness, dispassion is not being caught by what attracts us.

Krishna defines the four attainments named two verses earlier.

14.28 Uddhava to Krishna

yamaḥ katividhaḥ prokto | niyamo vārikarṣaṇa kaḥ śamaḥ ko damaḥ kṛṣṇa ||

Uddhava said: How many kinds of self-restraint (yama) are taught, O Kṛṣṇa, and of observance (niyama)? What is calm, and what is self-control?

Meaning today and context

Uddhava asks for plain definitions of familiar words. Asking what our values actually mean is where real practice begins.

Uddhava begins a long string of questions about the virtues and their true meaning (Bhagavata 11.19.28; the e-text's line breaks are shifted in 28-32).

14.29 Uddhava to Krishna

kā titikṣā dhṛtiḥ prabho kiṃ dānaṃ kiṃ tapaḥ śauryaṃ | kimsatyamṛtamucyate kastyāgaḥ kiṃ dhanaṃ ceṣṭaṃ ||

What is endurance, Lord, and what is steadiness? What is giving, what is austerity, what is courage? What is called truth and what is called right speech? What is renunciation, and what wealth is worth desiring?

Meaning today and context

Questions like 'what is real courage?' or 'what wealth is worth wanting?' are still the ones that shape a life.

Uddhava continues his questions.

14.30 Uddhava to Krishna

ko yajñaḥ kā ca dakṣiṇā puṃsaḥ kiṃ svidbalaṃ śrīman | bhago lābhaśca keśava kā vidyā hrīḥ parā kā śrīḥ ||

What is sacrifice, and what is the sacrificial fee? What, glorious one, is a person's strength, and what are fortune and gain, Keśava? What is learning, what is the highest modesty, and what is beauty?

Meaning today and context

Strength, gain, learning, beauty: Uddhava asks what each of these really is, beyond its everyday sense.

Uddhava continues his questions.

14.31 Uddhava to Krishna

kiṃ sukhaṃ duḥkhameva ca kaḥ paṇḍitaḥ kaśca mūrkhaḥ | kaḥ panthā utpathaśca kaḥ kaḥ svargo narakaḥ kaḥ svit ||

What is happiness, and what is sorrow? Who is wise and who is a fool? What is the path and what is the wrong path? What is heaven, and what is hell?

Meaning today and context

These are the oldest questions anyone asks: what makes us happy, who is truly wise, which way to go.

Uddhava continues his questions.

14.32 Uddhava to Krishna

Who is a kinsman, and what is a home? Who is rich and who is poor? Who is miserly and who is master? Tell me the answers to these questions, Lord of the good, and their opposites as well.

Meaning today and context

Asking who is truly rich or truly poor makes us look again at the measures we live by.

Uddhava ends his questions and asks Krishna to answer them, along with their opposites.

14.33 Krishna to Uddhava

ahiṃsā satyamasteyamasaṅgo hrīrasañcayaḥ | āstikyaṃ brahmacaryaṃ ca maunaṃ sthairyaṃ kṣamābhayam ||

Non-harming, truthfulness, not stealing, non-attachment, modesty, not hoarding, faith, brahmacarya, silence, steadiness, forgiveness and fearlessness;

अहिंसा, सत्य, अस्तेय (चोरी न करना), असंग, लज्जा, असंचय (संग्रह न करना), आस्तिकता, ब्रह्मचर्य, मौन, स्थिरता, क्षमा और अभय;

Brahmacarya and self-control here mean discipline and restraint, not a demand for celibacy on a householder or for denying the body food. Not dietary or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

This is a short list of a good character: don't harm, don't lie, don't take or hoard, stay humble and steady, forgive, and be unafraid.

Krishna answers, first listing the twelve yamas (restraints).

14.34 Krishna to Uddhava

śaucaṃ japastapo homaḥ śraddhātithyaṃ madarcanam | tīrthāṭanaṃ parārthehā tuṣṭirācāryasevanam ||

Purity, repetition of mantras, austerity, fire offering, faith, hospitality, worship of me, pilgrimage, striving for the good of others, contentment and service of the teacher;

शौच, जप, तप, हवन, श्रद्धा, अतिथि-सत्कार, मेरी पूजा, तीर्थयात्रा, दूसरों के हित के लिए प्रयत्न, संतोष और आचार्य की सेवा;

Meaning today and context

Alongside prayer and worship, the list includes welcoming guests, working for others' good and being content: spiritual life is lived among people.

Krishna lists the twelve niyamas (observances).

14.35 Krishna to Uddhava

ete yamāḥ saniyamā ubhayordvādaśa smṛtāḥ | puṃsāmupāsitāstāta yathākāmaṃ duhanti hi ||

These are the yamas together with the niyamas, twelve of each, as tradition holds. Practised by people, dear friend, they yield whatever one wishes, as a cow yields milk.

Meaning today and context

Steady good habits pay back over a lifetime, like a cow that keeps giving milk.

Krishna sums up the yamas and niyamas.

14.36 Krishna to Uddhava

śamo manniṣṭhatā buddherdama indriyasaṃyamaḥ | titikṣā duḥkhasammarṣo jihvopasthajayo dhṛtiḥ ||

Calm (śama) is the understanding fixed on me; self-control (dama) is restraint of the senses; endurance (titikṣā) is bearing sorrow patiently; steadiness (dhṛti) is mastery over the tongue and sexual desire.

Brahmacarya and self-control here mean discipline and restraint, not a demand for celibacy on a householder or for denying the body food. Not dietary or medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Calm comes from where the mind rests, not from forcing it. Endurance means bearing hard times patiently; steadiness shows in mastering our appetites.

Krishna now defines the virtues Uddhava asked about: calm, self-control, endurance and steadiness.

14.37 Krishna to Uddhava

daṇḍanyāsaḥ paraṃ dānaṃ kāmatyāgastapaḥ smṛtam | svabhāvavijayaḥ śauryaṃ satyaṃ ca samadarśanam ||

Laying down the rod of harm is the highest gift; giving up desire is called austerity; conquering one's own nature is courage; and truth is seeing all with an equal eye.

Meaning today and context

The greatest gift is to harm no one; real courage is winning over our own habits and impulses, not over others.

Krishna continues the definitions: giving, austerity, courage and truth.

14.38 Krishna to Uddhava

anyacca sūnṛtā vāṇī kavibhiḥ parikīrtitā | karmasvasaṅgamaḥ śaucaṃ tyāgaḥ sannyāsa ucyate ||

And the other, ṛta, is speech that is both true and kind, as the seers declare; purity is non-attachment in one's actions; and renunciation is said to be giving up.

Renunciation here is inner letting go, not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Speech should be true and gentle at once. Real purity is not only bathing but acting without clinging to results.

Krishna defines right speech (ṛta), purity and renunciation.

14.39 Krishna to Uddhava

dharma iṣṭaṃ dhanaṃ nṝṇāṃ yajño'haṃ bhagavattamaḥ | dakṣiṇā jñānasandeśaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ paraṃ balam ||

Dharma is the wealth people should desire; I, the Lord, am the sacrifice; the sacrificial fee is passing on knowledge; and control of the breath is the highest strength.

Prāṇāyāma should be learned from a qualified teacher; never hold the breath forcibly, and consult a doctor for heart, blood-pressure or breathing conditions. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Good conduct is the wealth that lasts; sharing knowledge is the best payment; a steady, gathered breath and mind is real strength.

Krishna defines wealth, sacrifice, the sacrificial fee and strength.

14.40 Krishna to Uddhava

bhago ma aiśvaro bhāvo lābho madbhaktiruttamaḥ | vidyātmani bhidābādho jugupsā hrīrakarmasu ||

Fortune is my own divine nature; the highest gain is devotion to me; learning is the removal of the sense of division in the Self; and modesty is shrinking from wrong deeds.

Meaning today and context

True learning breaks down the walls we put between ourselves and others. Healthy shame is simply a reluctance to do wrong, not self-hatred.

Krishna defines fortune, gain, learning and modesty.

14.41 Krishna to Uddhava

śrīrguṇā nairapekṣyādyāḥ sukhaṃ duḥkhasukhātyayaḥ | duḥkhaṃ kāmasukhāpekṣā paṇḍito bandhamokṣavit ||

Beauty is qualities such as freedom from dependence; happiness is going beyond both pleasure and pain; sorrow is hankering after the pleasures of desire; the wise one is the one who knows bondage and liberation.

Meaning today and context

Craving pleasure is itself a kind of suffering. Lasting happiness comes from not depending on things going our way.

Krishna defines beauty, happiness, sorrow and the wise person.

14.42 Krishna to Uddhava

mūrkho dehādyahaṃbuddhiḥ panthā mannigamaḥ smṛtaḥ | utpathaścittavikṣepaḥ svargaḥ sattvaguṇodayaḥ ||

The fool is one who takes the body and the rest to be 'I'; the path is the one that leads to me; the wrong path is a scattered mind; heaven is the rising of sattva.

Meaning today and context

Heaven and the wrong road are states of mind as much as places: a scattered mind leads astray, a clear and calm one is already a kind of heaven.

Krishna defines the fool, the path, the wrong path and heaven.

14.43 Krishna to Uddhava

narakastamaunnāho bandhurgururahaṃ sakhe | gṛhaṃ śarīraṃ mānuṣyaṃ guṇāḍhyo hyāḍhya ucyate ||

Hell is the swelling of tamas; the true kinsman is the teacher, and that is I, my friend; home is the human body; and the rich one is said to be one rich in good qualities.

Meaning today and context

Dullness and inertia are a kind of hell we can sink into. Real wealth is good character, and this human life is the home in which we grow.

Krishna defines hell, the true kinsman, home and the rich person.

14.44 Krishna to Uddhava

daridro yastvasantuṣṭaḥ kṛpaṇo yo'jitendriyaḥ | guṇeṣvasaktadhīrīśo guṇasaṅgo viparyayaḥ ||

The poor one is the discontented; the miser is one who has not mastered his senses; the master is one whose mind is not attached to the guṇas; and attachment to the guṇas is the opposite, bondage.

This is about inner contentment, not a dismissal of real poverty or need. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Someone with a lot can still be poor if never satisfied. Freedom is not owning more but not being owned by what we want.

Krishna defines the poor, the miser and the master, and their opposite.

14.45 Krishna to Uddhava

eta uddhava te praśnāḥ sarve sādhu nirūpitāḥ | kiṃ varṇitena bahunā lakṣaṇaṃ guṇadoṣayoḥ | guṇadoṣadṛśirdoṣo guṇastūbhayavarjitaḥ ||

Uddhava, all your questions have been answered well. What use is saying more? The mark of good and fault is this: seeing good and fault everywhere is itself the fault; the good is to be free of both.

Going beyond judging is not ignoring harm or wrongdoing; one can still recognise and stop what is harmful.

Meaning today and context

Constantly judging people and things as good or bad keeps the mind busy and divided. Settling beyond that habit of judging is itself a virtue.

Krishna closes his answers with a final teaching on good and bad.
