1.351 Guru to Disciple

nityādvayākhaṇḍacidekarūpo | buddhyādisākṣī sadasadvilakṣaṇaḥ | ahaṃpadapratyayalakṣitārthaḥ | pratyaksadānandaghanaḥ parātmā ||

The supreme Self is eternal, non-dual, undivided, of the one nature of awareness; the witness of the intellect and the rest, distinct from both the gross and the subtle; the meaning pointed to by the sense of 'I'; the inmost Self, a mass of existence and bliss.

Meaning today and context

Beneath the 'I' that is proud, hurt or afraid is the plain awareness that the word 'I' really points to. It watches the mind and is not damaged by what the mind goes through.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he describes the supreme Self: one, eternal, undivided awareness, witness of the intellect, different from both real and unreal, pointed to by the word 'I'.

1.352 Guru to Disciple

itthaṃ vipaścitsadasadvibhajya | niścitya tattvaṃ nijabodhadṛṣṭyā | jñātvā svamātmānamakhaṇḍabodhaṃ | tebhyo vimuktaḥ svayameva śāmyati ||

Thus the wise one, separating the real from the unreal and settling the truth by the eye of his own understanding, knowing his own Self as undivided awareness, is freed from them and of himself attains peace.

Meaning today and context

Peace is not given by others or by circumstances; it comes when you see for yourself what in you is lasting and what is passing.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the wise person who separates real from unreal and knows his own Self as undivided awareness becomes free of them and is at peace by himself.

1.353 Guru to Disciple

ajñānahṛdayagrantherniḥśeṣavilayastadā | samādhināvikalpena yadādvaitātmadarśanam ||

The knot of ignorance in the heart is wholly dissolved when, through samadhi free of mental constructs, the non-dual Self is seen.

Meaning today and context

Some knots in us loosen only in deep stillness, not through argument. Quiet, steady practice reaches what thinking cannot.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the knot of ignorance in the heart is wholly dissolved when the non-dual Self is seen in nirvikalpa samadhi.

1.354 Guru to Disciple

tvamahamidamitīyaṃ kalpanā buddhidoṣāt | prabhavati paramātmanyadvaye nirviśeṣe | pravilasati samādhāvasya sarvo vikalpo | vilayanamupagacchedvastutattvāvadhṛtyā ||

Notions such as 'you', 'I' and 'this' arise in the supreme Self, non-dual and without distinctions, through a defect of the intellect. In samadhi, when the truth of reality is firmly grasped, all such constructs shine forth no more and come to dissolution.

Meaning today and context

Many conflicts rest on sharp lines between 'me', 'you' and 'this'. In deep stillness those lines soften, and with them much of the friction they cause.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says notions like 'you', 'I' and 'this' arise from a defect of the intellect in the one Self, and dissolve in samadhi when reality is firmly grasped.

1.355 Guru to Disciple

śānto dāntaḥ paramuparataḥ kṣāntiyuktaḥ samādhiṃ | kurvannityaṃ kalayati yatiḥ svasya sarvātmabhāvam | tenāvidyātimirajanitānsādhu dagdhvā vikalpān | brahmākṛtyā nivasati sukhaṃ niṣkriyo nirvikalpaḥ ||

Calm, self-controlled, wholly withdrawn and forbearing, the seeker who practises samadhi constantly realises that he is the Self of all. By this he thoroughly burns away the constructs born of the darkness of ignorance, and lives happily as Brahman, free of action and of mental constructs.

Renunciation here means inner detachment for most people; it is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Calm, self-restraint, patience and daily practice are the ground; on that ground the mind's confused stories burn away and a simple ease remains.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he describes the renunciate who, calm, controlled and patient, practises samadhi daily, burns away the constructs born of ignorance, and lives at ease as Brahman.

1.356 Guru to Disciple

samāhitā ye pravilāpya bāhyaṃ | śrotrādi cetaḥ svamahaṃ cidātmani | ta eva muktā bhavapāśabandhaiḥ | nānye tu pārokṣyakathābhidhāyinaḥ ||

Those who, absorbed in samadhi, dissolve the outer world, the senses such as hearing, the mind and their own ego into the conscious Self, they alone are free of the bonds of the noose of worldly existence; not others who only talk of it at second hand.

Meaning today and context

Talking about spiritual ideas is not the same as living them. What matters is the quiet inner work, not how well we can explain it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says only those who, absorbed, merge the outer world, the senses, mind and ego into the conscious Self are free; not those who only talk about it at second hand.

1.357 Guru to Disciple

upādhibhedātsvayameva bhidyate | copādhyapohe svayameva kevalaḥ | tasmādupādhervilayāya vidvān | vasetsadākalpasamādhiniṣṭhayā ||

Through difference in adjuncts the Self itself seems to be divided, and when the adjuncts are removed it is itself alone. Therefore, for the dissolution of the adjuncts, the wise should live ever devoted to samadhi free of constructs.

Meaning today and context

Roles and labels make us feel split into many selves: worker, parent, failure, success. Beneath them is one undivided awareness, and quiet practice helps us rest in it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the Self appears divided because of its adjuncts and is alone and whole when they are removed, so the wise should stay devoted to nirvikalpa samadhi to dissolve them.

1.358 Guru to Disciple

sati sakto naro yāti sadbhāvaṃ hyekaniṣṭhayā | kīṭako bhramaraṃ dhyāyanbhramaratvāya kalpate ||

A person devoted to the real reaches the state of the real through single-pointed devotion, just as the worm, meditating on the bee, becomes fit to turn into a bee.

Meaning today and context

We become what we dwell on. Whatever you give steady attention to slowly shapes who you are, so choose it well.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says that one devoted to the real becomes the real through single-minded focus, as the insect meditating on the bee is said to become a bee.

1.359 Guru to Disciple

kriyāntarāsaktimapāsya kīṭako | dhyāyannalitvaṃ hyalibhāvamṛcchati | tathaiva yogī paramātmatattvaṃ | dhyātvā samāyāti tadekaniṣṭhayā ||

The worm, giving up attachment to all other activity and meditating on the bee, attains the state of the bee; in the same way the yogi, meditating on the truth of the supreme Self, reaches it through single-pointed devotion.

Meaning today and context

Scattered attention scatters a life. Real change comes from giving one aim your whole heart and letting distractions fall away.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he develops the image: as the insect, dropping all other activity, becomes a bee by meditating on it, so the yogi reaches the supreme Self by single-minded meditation on it.

1.360 Guru to Disciple

atīva sūkṣmaṃ paramātmatattvaṃ | na sthūladṛṣṭyā pratipattumarhati | samādhinātyantasusūkṣmavṛttyā | jñātavyamāryairatiśuddhabuddhibhiḥ ||

The truth of the supreme Self is extremely subtle; it cannot be grasped by gross vision. It is to be known by the noble, whose minds are very pure, through samadhi, by an exceedingly subtle state of mind.

Meaning today and context

Not everything worth knowing can be seen with a busy, coarse attention. The deepest things ask for a quiet, refined mind.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the supreme Self is extremely subtle and cannot be grasped by gross sight; it is known by noble seekers of very pure mind through the subtlest attention in samadhi.

1.361 Guru to Disciple

yathā suvarṇaṃ puṭapākaśodhitaṃ | tyaktvā malaṃ svātmaguṇaṃ samṛcchati | tathā manaḥ sattvarajastamomalaṃ | dhyānena santyajya sameti tattvam ||

As gold refined in the crucible gives up its dross and regains its own quality, so the mind, through meditation, casts off the impurities of sattva, rajas and tamas and reaches the truth.

Meaning today and context

Steady practice works like refining gold: heat and patience burn away what is not you, and what remains is your own clear nature.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he compares the mind purified by meditation to gold refined in the crucible, which sheds its impurity and recovers its own lustre.

1.362 Guru to Disciple

nirantarābhyāsavaśāttaditthaṃ | pakvaṃ mano brahmaṇi līyate yadā | tadā samādhiḥ savikalpavarjitaḥ | svato'dvayānandarasānubhāvakaḥ ||

When the mind, thus ripened by the force of unbroken practice, merges in Brahman, then comes samadhi free of all constructs, which of itself brings the experience of the bliss of non-duality.

Deep meditation is best learned under a qualified teacher; if it brings up distressing experiences, or you live with trauma or severe depression, seek guidance and support (Tele-MANAS 14416). It is not a substitute for treatment.

Meaning today and context

Deep peace is not forced; it comes when the mind has been ripened by long, patient practice, like fruit that falls when it is ready.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says when the mind, ripened by unbroken practice, merges in Brahman, there arises samadhi free of constructs that by itself gives the taste of non-dual bliss.

1.363 Guru to Disciple

samādhinānena samastavāsanā- | granthervināśo'khilakarmanāśaḥ | antarbahiḥ sarvata eva sarvadā | svarūpavisphūrtirayatnataḥ syāt ||

By this samadhi the knot of all tendencies is destroyed and all karma is destroyed; within and without, everywhere and always, one's own nature shines forth effortlessly.

Meaning today and context

Effort is needed at first, but its aim is a state where being yourself needs no effort at all.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he names the fruits of this samadhi: the knot of all tendencies is destroyed, all karma ends, and one's true nature shines everywhere, always, without effort.

1.364 Guru to Disciple

śruteḥ śataguṇaṃ vidyānmananaṃ mananādapi | nididhyāsaṃ lakṣaguṇamanantaṃ nirvikalpakam ||

Know that reflection (manana) is a hundred times better than hearing (śravaṇa); meditation (nididhyāsana) a hundred thousand times better than reflection; and samadhi free of constructs is infinite.

Meaning today and context

Listening to wisdom is good; thinking it through is far better; living with it in steady contemplation is better still. Don't stop at collecting teachings.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he ranks the three steps: reflection is a hundred times better than hearing, meditation a hundred thousand times better than reflection, and nirvikalpa samadhi infinite.

1.365 Guru to Disciple

nirvikalpakasamādhinā sphuṭaṃ | brahmatattvamavagamyate dhruvam | nānyathā calatayā manogateḥ | pratyayāntaravimiśritaṃ bhavet ||

Through nirvikalpa samadhi the truth of Brahman is clearly and surely known, not otherwise; for, because the movement of the mind is unsteady, it would be mixed with other notions.

Meaning today and context

A restless mind colours everything it sees with its own worries and wishes. Only a still mind sees without mixing.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the truth of Brahman is clearly and surely known through nirvikalpa samadhi and not otherwise, since the moving mind mixes it with other notions.

1.366 Guru to Disciple

ataḥ samādhatsva yatendriyaḥ san | nirantaraṃ śāntamanāḥ pratīci | vidhvaṃsaya dhvāntamanādyavidyayā | kṛtaṃ sadekatvavilokanena ||

Therefore, with senses restrained and mind at peace, be absorbed constantly in the inner Self, and destroy the darkness made by beginningless ignorance through seeing the oneness of the real.

Deep meditation is best learned under a qualified teacher; if it brings up distressing experiences, or you live with trauma or severe depression, seek guidance and support (Tele-MANAS 14416). It is not a substitute for treatment.

Meaning today and context

The instruction is simple though not easy: quiet the senses, calm the mind, turn attention inward, and keep at it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he urges the disciple: with senses controlled and mind at peace, be constantly absorbed in the inner Self and destroy the darkness of beginningless ignorance by seeing the oneness of being.

1.367 Guru to Disciple

yogasya prathamadvāraṃ vāṅnirodho'parigrahaḥ | nirāśā ca nirīhā ca nityamekāntaśīlatā ||

The first door of yoga is restraint of speech, non-possession, freedom from expectation, freedom from striving, and a constant liking for solitude.

Time in solitude is a practice, not a call to cut yourself off from people; if you feel isolated or low, reach out to others or Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Less talk, fewer possessions, fewer expectations and some regular time alone are where inner quiet begins for anyone, renunciate or not.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he names the first doors of yoga: restraint of speech, not hoarding, freedom from expectation and from striving, and a habit of solitude.

1.368 Guru to Disciple

ekāntasthitirindriyoparamaṇe heturdamaścetasaḥ | saṃrodhe karaṇaṃ śamena vilayaṃ yāyādahaṃvāsanā | tenānandarasānubhūtiracalā brāhmī sadā yoginaḥ | tasmāccittanirodha eva satataṃ kāryaḥ prayatno muneḥ ||

Living in solitude is the cause of the senses' withdrawal; self-control is the means to restrain the mind; through calm the tendencies of the ego dissolve; from that the yogi always has a steady experience of the bliss of Brahman. Therefore the sage should always strive to still the mind.

Meaning today and context

Peace is built in steps: fewer inputs quiet the senses, restraint steadies the mind, and a calmer mind loosens the grip of ego. Each step makes the next easier.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he explains the chain: solitude stills the senses, control stills the mind, calm dissolves the ego's tendencies, and from that comes unbroken bliss; so the sage should always work to still the mind.

1.369 Guru to Disciple

vācaṃ niyacchātmani taṃ niyaccha | buddhau dhiyaṃ yaccha ca buddhisākṣiṇi | taṃ cāpi pūrṇātmani nirvikalpe | vilāpya śāntiṃ paramāṃ bhajasva ||

Restrain speech in the mind, restrain the mind in the intellect, the intellect in the witness of the intellect, and dissolving that too in the full Self free of constructs, enjoy supreme peace.

Meaning today and context

Quieting happens in layers: first stop talking, then let thoughts settle, then rest as the awareness that watches. Each layer is gentler than the one before.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he gives a graded meditation: merge speech in the mind, the mind in the intellect, the intellect in its witness, and that in the full Self, and find supreme peace.

1.370 Guru to Disciple

dehaprāṇendriyamanobuddhyādibhirupādhibhiḥ | yairyairvṛtteḥsamāyogastattadbhāvo'sya yoginaḥ ||

With whichever adjuncts, the body, breath, senses, mind, intellect and the rest, the mind's activity is joined, the yogi takes on the nature of that.

Meaning today and context

Whatever we identify with, we feel we are: tired body, anxious mind, clever intellect. Noticing this is the first step to not being trapped by it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says that with whichever adjunct (body, breath, senses, mind, intellect) the mind's activity is joined, the yogi takes on that character.

tannivṛttyā muneḥ samyaksarvoparamaṇaṃ sukham | saṃdṛśyate sadānandarasānubhavaviplavaḥ ||

When that ceases, the sage's complete withdrawal from everything is happiness; and there is seen an overflowing experience of the bliss of the real.

Meaning today and context

Much of our joy is hidden by constant identification with roles and moods. When that busy identifying rests, a quiet happiness is found that was there all along.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says when that identification stops, the sage comes to complete rest, which is happiness, and an overflowing experience of lasting bliss is seen.

antastyāgo bahistyāgo viraktasyaiva yujyate | tyajatyantarbahiḥsaṅgaṃ viraktastu mumukṣayā ||

Inner renunciation and outer renunciation are possible only for the dispassionate; the dispassionate one, out of longing for freedom, gives up attachment both within and without.

Renunciation here means inner detachment for most people; it is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Letting go outwardly without letting go inwardly does not last, and both depend on genuinely seeing that clinging does not satisfy.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says inner and outer renunciation are possible only for one who is dispassionate, who gives up attachment within and without out of longing for freedom.

1.373 Guru to Disciple

bahistu viṣayaiḥ saṅgaṃ tathāntarahamādibhiḥ | virakta eva śaknoti tyaktuṃ brahmaṇi niṣṭhitaḥ ||

Only the dispassionate one, established in Brahman, is able to give up outer attachment to objects and inner attachment to the ego and the rest.

Renunciation here means inner detachment for most people; it is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

There are two kinds of clinging: to things outside and to our self-image inside. The second is subtler, and is loosened only by being rooted in something deeper.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he adds that only the dispassionate, established in Brahman, can give up outer attachment to objects and inner attachment to ego and the rest.

vairāgyabodhau puruṣasya pakṣivat | pakṣau vijānīhi vicakṣaṇa tvam | vimuktisaudhāgralatādhirohaṇaṃ | tābhyāṃ vinā nānyatareṇa sidhyati ||

Know, O wise one, that dispassion and knowledge are a person's two wings, like a bird's. Without both, climbing to the creeper on the top of the mansion of liberation cannot be done with either one alone.

Meaning today and context

Understanding without letting go stays theoretical; letting go without understanding becomes harsh or empty. Growth needs both wings.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says dispassion and knowledge are like the two wings of a bird; without both one cannot climb to the top of the mansion of liberation.

atyantavairāgyavataḥ samādhiḥ | samāhitasyaiva dṛḍhaprabodhaḥ | prabuddhatattvasya hi bandhamuktiḥ | muktātmano nityasukhānubhūtiḥ ||

For one of intense dispassion there is samadhi; for one in samadhi alone, firm realisation; for one who has realised the truth, release from bondage; and for the freed self, the experience of eternal happiness.

Meaning today and context

Lasting happiness is the end of a chain that starts with honestly loosening our grip on what cannot satisfy. Each link supports the next.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he gives the sequence: intense dispassion leads to samadhi, samadhi to firm realisation, realisation to release from bondage, and release to the experience of lasting happiness.

1.376 Guru to Disciple

I see nothing greater than dispassion as a source of happiness for one who has mastered himself; and if it is joined with very pure Self-knowledge, it yields the sovereignty of self-rule. Since this is the door to the maiden of lasting liberation, therefore, for your highest good, be free of craving for anything, everywhere, and always fix your understanding on the eternal Self.

Meaning today and context

Being less driven by wanting is itself a kind of happiness, and combined with self-understanding it makes you master of your own life rather than ruled by cravings.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says he sees nothing greater than dispassion as a source of happiness for the self-controlled; joined with pure Self-knowledge it gives sovereign freedom, so be desireless everywhere and fix your understanding on the Self.

Cut off longing for sense objects, which are like poison; this is the very work of death. Giving up pride in caste, family and stage of life, put actions far away. Give up taking the unreal body and the rest as the Self, and fix your understanding on the Self. For in truth you are the seer, free of mind, the supreme Brahman without a second.

'Put actions far away' is addressed to a renunciate; for most people it means inner detachment, not abandoning family, work or responsibilities. Dropping caste pride is the point; caste never decides anyone's worth.

Meaning today and context

Pride in caste, family or status is one of the things to drop; who you truly are is not defined by birth, roles or the body. Endless chasing of pleasures quietly eats away at life.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he urges: cut off hope in sense objects, which are like poison; drop pride in caste, family and stage of life; give up identifying with the body; you are the seer, beyond mind, the non-dual Brahman.

Firmly fixing the mind on Brahman, the goal, and setting the outer senses in their own places, with body motionless and paying no heed to the body's condition, attaining the oneness of Brahman and Self, absorbed in it, with unbroken awareness day and night, joyfully drink the nectar of Brahman's bliss in the Self. What use are other empty things?

'Paying no heed to the body' applies to the period of meditation; outside it, look after your body, health and treatment. Deep meditation is best learned under a qualified teacher; Tele-MANAS 14416 if it brings up distress.

Meaning today and context

In meditation, let the body be still and stop fussing over it, and give the mind one clear focus. The joy found there makes many outer distractions seem empty.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he gives a meditation: fix the mind firmly on Brahman, withdraw the senses, keep the body still, disregard its condition, and joyfully drink the bliss of Brahman in unbroken awareness.

anātmacintanaṃ tyaktvā kaśmalaṃ duḥkhakāraṇam | cintayātmānamānandarūpaṃ yanmuktikāraṇam ||

Giving up thinking about the not-Self, which is foul and the cause of sorrow, think of the Self, whose nature is bliss and which is the cause of liberation.

Meaning today and context

What we keep thinking about shapes how we feel. Endless brooding on body, status and problems feeds sorrow; turning attention to the steady awareness within feeds peace.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he tells the disciple to give up dwelling on the not-Self, which is impure and causes sorrow, and to contemplate the Self, whose nature is bliss and which leads to freedom.

Meaning today and context

The awareness that knows your thoughts is always present, even when thoughts are dark. Turn toward it again and again until you recognise it as yourself.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he points to the self-luminous witness of all, shining constantly in the sheath of intellect, and asks the disciple to make it the goal and experience it as himself through unbroken awareness.

etamacchinnayā vṛttyā pratyayāntaraśūnyayā | ullekhayanvijānīyātsvasvarūpatayā sphuṭam ||

Bringing this to mind with an unbroken current of thought, empty of any other notion, one should clearly know it as one's own nature.

Meaning today and context

Recognition deepens through continuity: returning to the same quiet awareness without letting other thoughts break the thread.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says one should know this Self clearly as one's own nature by an unbroken current of thought, free of any other notion.

atrātmatvaṃ dṛḍhīkurvannahamādiṣu saṃtyajan | udāsīnatayā teṣu tiṣṭhetsphuṭaghaṭādivat ||

Making firm the sense of Self here, and giving it up in the ego and the rest, one should remain indifferent towards them, as towards a pot or other plainly seen object.

Meaning today and context

You can watch your ego's reactions the way you would look at a pot on a shelf: there, visible, but not you. That distance takes away much of their power.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says to make firm one's identity with the Self, give up identity with ego and the rest, and stay indifferent to them as to a pot or other object.

viśuddhamantaḥkaraṇaṃ svarūpe | niveśya sākṣiṇyavabodhamātre | śanaiḥ śanairniścalatāmupānayan | pūrṇaṃ svamevānuvilokayettataḥ ||

Placing the purified inner instrument in one's own nature, the witness, which is pure awareness, and slowly, slowly bringing it to stillness, one should then see one's own Self as whole.

Meaning today and context

Stillness comes slowly, 'little by little'; it cannot be forced. Gentle, patient settling is the method.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says to settle the purified mind in the witness, pure awareness, and gradually bringing it to stillness, see oneself as whole.

One should see the Self as free of all adjuncts, body, senses, breath, mind, ego and the rest, which are imagined through one's own ignorance, as undivided and full, like the vast sky.

'Not the body' is about identity, not neglect: keep caring for your health, food, sleep and treatment. Never to be read as a reason for self-harm or self-contempt; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Like the sky, which is not changed by the clouds passing through it, your deepest self is not damaged by what the body and mind go through.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says one should see the Self as free of all adjuncts (body, senses, breath, mind, ego) imagined through ignorance, undivided and full like the great sky.

Space, freed from its hundreds of limiting adjuncts such as pot, jar, granary and the eye of a needle, is one and not many. In the same way the pure Supreme, freed from the ego and the rest, is one alone.

Meaning today and context

The space inside a cup and the space in a room are the same space. The verse invites you to see that the awareness in you is not a small private thing cut off from everyone else.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, uses the example of space in pots and jars to show that the Self is one, though it seems divided by many adjuncts.

1.386 Guru to Disciple

brahmādistambaparyantā mṛṣāmātrā upādhayaḥ | tataḥ pūrṇaṃ svamātmānaṃ paśyedekātmanā sthitam ||

The limiting adjuncts, from Brahmā down to a tuft of grass, are mere appearance. Therefore one should see one's own Self as full, abiding as the one Self.

Meaning today and context

Titles, roles and bodies, high or low, are coverings. Seeing past them, you can feel whole without needing to be someone greater or fearing being someone smaller.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says all limiting adjuncts, from the creator Brahmā down to a blade of grass, are unreal, so one should see the Self as full and single.

yatra bhrāntyā kalpitaṃ tadviveke | tattanmātraṃ naiva tasmādvibhinnam | bhrānternāśe bhāti dṛṣṭāhitattvaṃ | rajjustadvadviśvamātmasvarūpam ||

Whatever is imagined in something through error is, when examined, just that thing and nothing different from it. When the error ends, the reality of what was seen as a snake shines as the rope; so too the universe is of the nature of the Self.

Meaning today and context

Much of what frightens us is a rope taken for a snake. Looking clearly does not destroy the thing; it shows what it always was.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, explains with the rope and snake that what is imagined in error is nothing other than its ground; so the world is the Self.

One is oneself Brahmā, oneself Viṣṇu, oneself Indra, oneself Śiva; oneself is this whole universe. There is nothing other than oneself.

This teaches the oneness of all in the Self, not that any person is a god to be obeyed. Be wary of anyone who uses such verses to claim power over others.

Meaning today and context

This is a statement of the oneness of the Self, not of personal importance. Seeing the same reality in the divine and in oneself makes reverence and humility go together.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, declares that the Self alone is every god and the whole universe.

antaḥ svayaṃ cāpi bahiḥ svayaṃ ca | svayaṃ purastātsvayameva paścāt | svayaṃ hyāvācyāṃ svayamapyudīcyāṃ | tathopariṣṭātsvayamapyadhastāt ||

The Self is within, and the Self is without; the Self is in front, the Self alone behind; the Self is in the south and in the north, and so too above and below.

Meaning today and context

When you feel cornered or alone, the verse points to a presence that is not located anywhere and so cannot be shut out. It can be used as a calming contemplation.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says the Self is in every direction, within and without.

taraṅgaphenabhramabudbudādi | sarvaṃ svarūpeṇa jalaṃ yathā tathā | cideva dehādyahamantametat | sarvaṃ cidevaikarasaṃ viśuddham ||

As waves, foam, eddies, bubbles and the rest are all water in their nature, so all this, from the body to the ego, is consciousness alone, all of one essence, pure.

Meaning today and context

Moods, thoughts and sensations rise and fall like waves, but they are all movements of one awareness. You need not fear each wave when you know you are the water.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, uses water and its waves to show that everything from body to ego is pure consciousness.

sadevedaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavagataṃ vāṅmanasayoḥ | sato'nyannāstyeva prakṛtiparasīmni sthitavataḥ | pṛthakkiṃ mṛtsnāyāḥ kalaśaghaṭakumbhādyavagataṃ | vadatyeṣa bhrāntastvamahamiti māyāmadirayā ||

This whole world, known through speech and mind, is Being alone; for one who stands at the far limit beyond nature, nothing exists apart from Being. Are pot, jar and pitcher known as anything separate from clay? It is the deluded one, drunk on the wine of māyā, who says 'you' and 'I'.

Meaning today and context

Many quarrels come from treating 'me' and 'you' as walls. Seeing the shared ground beneath different shapes can soften the sharp divisions we live by.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says the whole world is Being alone, as pots are only clay, and that 'you' and 'I' are spoken by one drunk on māyā.

kriyāsamabhihāreṇa yatra nānyaditi śrutiḥ | bravīti dvaitarāhityaṃ mithyādhyāsanivṛttaye ||

Scripture, by repetition, in the words 'where there is nothing else', declares the absence of duality, to remove false superimposition.

Meaning today and context

Scripture repeats itself because old habits of seeing are stubborn. Hearing a truth again and again is part of letting it sink in.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, cites the scriptural words 'where one sees nothing else', repeated for emphasis, as teaching non-duality.

1.393 Guru to Disciple

ākāśavannirmalanirvikalpaṃ | niḥsīmaniḥspandananirvikāram | antarbahiḥśūnyamananyamadvayaṃ | svayaṃ paraṃ brahma kimasti bodhyam ||

Stainless like space, free of distinctions, boundless, motionless, changeless, without inside or outside, with no other and no second: you yourself are the supreme Brahman. What else is there to know?

Meaning today and context

Seeking can become endless searching for one more book or method. The verse turns you back to what you already are, which no search can add to.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, describes the supreme Brahman and tells the disciple it is himself: there is nothing left to be known.

1.394 Guru to Disciple

vaktavyaṃ kimu vidyate'tra bahudhā brahmaiva jīvaḥ svayaṃ | brahmaitajjagadātataṃ nu sakalaṃ brahmādvitīyaṃ śrutiḥ | brahmaivāhamiti prabuddhamatayaḥ saṃtyaktabāhyāḥ sphuṭaṃ | brahmībhūya vasanti santatacidānandātmanaitaddhruvam ||

What more is there to say at length? The individual self is Brahman itself; this whole outspread world is Brahman; scripture says Brahman has no second. Those whose minds have awakened to 'I am Brahman alone', having clearly let go of outer things, become Brahman and live as unbroken consciousness and bliss. This is certain.

Meaning today and context

The whole teaching in one breath: you are not a fragment. Letting go of outer things here means no longer resting your worth on them, not walking away from your life.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, sums up: the individual is Brahman, the world is Brahman, and those who awaken to 'I am Brahman' live as consciousness and bliss.

1.395 Guru to Disciple

jahi malamayakośe'haṃdhiyotthāpitāśāṃ | prasabhamanilakalpe liṅgadehe'pi paścāt | nigamagaditakīrtiṃ nityamānandamūrtiṃ | svayamiti paricīya brahmarūpeṇa tiṣṭha ||

Forcefully destroy the hopes raised by the thought 'I' in this sheath full of impurity, and afterwards in the subtle body too, which is like air. Recognising as yourself the eternal embodiment of bliss whose glory the scriptures proclaim, abide as Brahman.

The verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much anxiety is tied to hopes about the body and the mind: looks, health, being clever or admired. Loosening the 'this is me' grip on them gives room to be at peace.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, urges the disciple to give up the 'I'-hope placed in the gross body and then in the subtle body, and to abide as Brahman.

1.396 Guru to Disciple

śavākāraṃ yāvadbhajati manujastāvadaśuciḥ | parebhyaḥ syātkleśo jananamaraṇavyādhinilayaḥ | yadātmānaṃ śuddhaṃ kalayati śivākāramacalam | tadā tebhyo mukto bhavati hi tadāha śrutirapi ||

As long as a person cherishes this corpse-like form, he remains impure; suffering comes to him from others, and he is the home of birth, death and disease. When he knows the Self as pure, auspicious and unmoving, then he is freed from them; so scripture also says.

The verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

If you are your body alone, every illness, ageing and slight from others hits the core of you. Knowing yourself as deeper than the body lets you face these without being undone.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says that while one clings to the corpse-like body one stays impure and subject to birth, death and disease; knowing the pure Self frees one.

svātmanyāropitāśeṣābhāsavastunirāsataḥ | svayameva paraṃ brahma pūrṇamadvayamakriyam ||

By setting aside all the appearances superimposed on one's own Self, one is oneself the supreme Brahman, full, non-dual and actionless.

Meaning today and context

Freedom here is not gained by adding something but by removing the labels you have laid on yourself. What remains when they are set aside is already whole.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says that by negating every appearance superimposed on the Self, one is the full, non-dual, actionless Brahman.

samāhitāyāṃ sati cittavṛttau | parātmani brahmaṇi nirvikalpe | na dṛśyate kaścidayaṃ vikalpaḥ | prajalpamātraḥ pariśiṣyate yataḥ ||

When the activity of the mind is settled in the supreme Self, in Brahman free of distinctions, this world of distinctions is seen no more; it remains as mere talk.

Deep meditation is best learned with a qualified teacher. If intensive practice brings up distressing experiences, or you have trauma or severe depression, seek guidance; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

In deep stillness, the endless sorting of good and bad, mine and yours, falls quiet. Even brief moments of such stillness show that the mind's noise is not the whole truth.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says that when the mind is absorbed in Brahman, the world of distinctions is not seen; it remains only as talk.

1.399 Guru to Disciple

asatkalpo vikalpo'yaṃ viśvamityekavastuni | nirvikāre nirākāre nirviśeṣe bhidā kutaḥ ||

This distinction called 'the universe', in the one reality, is like something unreal. In the changeless, the formless, the attributeless, where could difference come from?

Meaning today and context

The many-ness we see is not the last word. Under all the differences that divide people lies one reality that is not divided.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, begins a series of verses with the refrain 'where could difference come from?', calling the universe an unreal imagining in the one reality.

draṣṭudarśanadṛśyādibhāvaśūnyaikavastuni | nirvikāre nirākāre nirviśeṣe bhidā kutaḥ ||

In the one reality, free of the states of seer, seeing and seen, in the changeless, the formless, the attributeless, where could difference come from?

Meaning today and context

Ordinary experience is split into the one who sees, the act of seeing and the thing seen. The verse points to an awareness that underlies all three.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, continues the refrain: in the one reality there is no seer, seeing or seen.
