Verses 1–50

1.1 Bhartrihari

dik-kālādyanavacchinnānanta-cin-mātra-mūrtaye | svānubhūty-eka-mānāya namaḥ śāntāya tejase ||

Salutation to that peaceful light whose form is pure, infinite consciousness, not limited by space, time or anything else, and whose only proof is one's own experience.

Meaning today and context

Before a book of worldly wisdom, the poet bows to awareness itself. The deepest reality is not something you argue into; you know it from within, in moments of quiet.

Bhartrihari's opening invocation: he bows not to a named deity but to the peaceful light of pure consciousness, known only through one's own experience.

1.2 Bhartrihari

boddhāro matsara-grastāḥ | prabhavaḥ smaya-dūṣitāḥ | abodhopahatāścānye | jīrṇamaṅge subhāṣitam ||

Those who could understand are eaten up by envy; the powerful are spoiled by arrogance; the rest are struck down by ignorance. So good sayings have grown old within me.

Meaning today and context

Good ideas often go unheard, not because they are poor but because listeners are jealous, proud or uninterested. It is an honest, human frustration, and a reminder to be a listener who isn't blocked by envy or ego.

The poet's preface: he complains that there is no fit audience for good verse, so his fine sayings have grown old unspoken within him.

1.3 Bhartrihari

ajñaḥ sukhamārādhyaḥ | sukhataramārādhyate viśeṣajñaḥ | jñāna-lava-durvidagdhaṃ | brahmāpi taṃ naraṃ na rañjayati ||

An ignorant person is easily won over; one who truly understands is won over more easily still. But the man made arrogant by a scrap of knowledge, not even Brahma can please.

The verse is about a closed, half-learned mind, including possibly our own; it is not a licence to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

A little knowledge with a lot of pride closes the mind more than ignorance does. It is worth asking whether we ourselves have become hard to teach because we know just enough.

Bhartrihari on whom one can and cannot persuade: the ignorant and the truly knowledgeable are easy to reach, the half-learned are not.

1.4 Bhartrihari

prasahya maṇimuddharenmakara-vaktra-daṃṣṭrāntarāt | samudramapi santaretpracaladūrmi-mālākulam | bhujaṅgamapi kopitaṃ śirasi puṣpavaddhārayet | na tu pratiniviṣṭa-mūrkha-jana-cittamārādhayet ||

One might wrench a jewel by force from between the teeth of a crocodile's jaws; one might cross the ocean churning with rows of waves; one might wear an angry serpent on one's head like a flower; but one cannot win over the mind of a stubborn fool.

"Fool" here means a person who refuses to listen, not someone less educated; the verse is not a licence to look down on anyone or to dismiss people who disagree.

Meaning today and context

Some people have decided not to be persuaded, and no amount of effort will change that. Recognising this saves you energy: say your piece once, calmly, and let it go.

Bhartrihari lists impossible feats that are still easier than changing the mind of an obstinate fool.

1.5 Bhartrihari

labheta sikatāsu tailamapi yatnataḥ pīḍayan | pibecca mṛga-tṛṣṇikāsu salilaṃ pipāsārditaḥ | kadācidapi paryaṭanśaśa-viṣāṇamāsādayet | na tu pratiniviṣṭa-mūrkha-jana-cittamārādhayet ||

Pressing hard enough, one might get oil even from sand; tormented by thirst, one might drink water from a mirage; wandering far, one might somewhere find a hare's horn; but one cannot win over the mind of a stubborn fool.

Not a licence to look down on anyone; it is about knowing where persuasion can work.

Meaning today and context

Trying to please someone who has closed their mind is like squeezing sand for oil. Put that effort into people and work where it can bear fruit.

A second list of impossibilities, continuing the theme of the stubborn fool.

1.6 Bhartrihari

vyālaṃ bāla-mṛṇāla-tantubhirasau roddhuṃ samujjṛmbhate | chettuṃ vajra-maṇiṃ śirīṣa-kusuma-prāntena sannahyati | mādhuryaṃ madhu-bindunā racayituṃ kṣārāmbudherīhate | netuṃ vāñchati yaḥ khalānpathi satāṃ sūktaiḥ sudhā-syandibhiḥ ||

He who hopes to lead the wicked onto the path of the good with nectar-dripping words is striving to bind a wild elephant with threads of tender lotus stalk, gearing up to cut a diamond with the tip of a shirisha blossom, and trying to sweeten the salt ocean with a drop of honey.

Not a reason to give up on anyone as worthless or to be harsh. If someone is abusing or endangering you, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

Kind words are good, but they don't by themselves change someone set on harm. With people like that, protect yourself and rely on clear limits rather than hoping a nice speech will reform them.

Bhartrihari mocks the well-meaning person who hopes to reform the wicked with sweet words alone.

1.7 Bhartrihari

svāyattamekānta-guṇaṃ vidhātrā | vinirmitaṃ chādanamajñatāyāḥ | viśeṣataḥ sarva-vidāṃ samāje | vibhūṣaṇaṃ maunamapaṇḍitānām ||

The Creator made one thing that is wholly in one's own control and good in every way, a covering for ignorance: silence. Especially in a gathering of the learned, silence is the ornament of those who are not.

Meaning today and context

When you don't know, staying quiet and listening is always available and never shameful. In meetings with experts, listening first often earns more respect than speaking to fill the silence.

Bhartrihari praises silence as the best cover for those who do not know, especially among experts.

1.9 Bhartrihari

kṛmi-kula-citaṃ lālā-klinnaṃ vigandhi-jugupsitaṃ | nirupama-rasaṃ prītyā khādannarāsthi nirāmiṣam | surapatimapi śvā pārśvasthaṃ vilokya na śaṅkate | na hi gaṇayati kṣudro jantuḥ parigraha-phalgutām ||

Chewing with relish a human bone, crawling with worms, wet with slobber, foul-smelling, disgusting and without any meat, as if it had matchless flavour, a dog does not hesitate even when it sees the lord of the gods standing beside it. A petty creature does not reckon how worthless its possession is.

Meaning today and context

We can cling so hard to small things, a grudge, a habit, a petty gain, that we stop seeing anything better right in front of us. It is worth asking what bone we are gnawing.

An image of pettiness: a dog gnawing a filthy bone is too absorbed to notice even the king of the gods beside it.

1.10 Bhartrihari

śiraḥ śārvaṃ svargātpaśupati-śirastaḥ kṣitidharaṃ | mahīdhrāduttuṅgādavanimavaneścāpi jaladhim | adho'dho gaṅgeyaṃ padamupagatā stokamathavā | viveka-bhraṣṭānāṃ bhavati vinipātaḥ śatamukhaḥ ||

From heaven onto Shiva's head, from the head of Pashupati onto the mountain, from the lofty mountain to the earth, and from the earth to the ocean: lower and lower this Ganga has come, to a humble place. Indeed, for those who have fallen from discernment, the fall has a hundred ways.

Meaning today and context

One lapse of judgement rarely stays one; it opens the way to the next. Guarding your discernment early is easier than climbing back after a long slide.

Bhartrihari uses the descent of the Ganga from heaven to the sea as an image of how those who lose discernment keep falling.

1.11 Bhartrihari

śakyo vārayituṃ jalena hutabhukcchatreṇa sūryātapo | nāgendro niśitāṅkuśena samado daṇḍena go-gardabhau | vyādhirbheṣaja-saṅgrahaiśca vividhairmantra-prayogairviṣaṃ | sarvasyauṣadhamasti śāstra-vihitaṃ mūrkhasya nāstyauṣadham ||

Fire can be checked with water, the heat of the sun with an umbrella, a mighty elephant in rut with a sharp goad, an ox or a donkey with a stick, disease with a collection of medicines, and poison with various spells. For everything there is a remedy laid down in the texts; for the fool there is no medicine.

Not a licence to look down on anyone. The mention of spells for poison is the poet's image, not medical advice: for poisoning or snakebite, get emergency care at once (108).

Meaning today and context

Most problems have some fix, but a person who refuses to learn cannot be helped from outside. The real remedy is willingness, and that only they can supply.

Bhartrihari lists dangers that each have a remedy, and says obstinate foolishness alone has none.

1.12 Bhartrihari

sāhitya-saṅgīta-kalā-vihīnaḥ | sākṣātpaśuḥ puccha-viṣāṇa-hīnaḥ | tṛṇaṃ na khādannapi jīvamānas | tadbhāga-dheyaṃ paramaṃ paśūnām ||

A man without literature, music or art is plainly a beast, only without tail and horns. That he lives without eating grass is the great good fortune of the beasts.

A witty exaggeration, not a judgement on anyone's worth; it is never a licence to mock people who had no chance to learn the arts.

Meaning today and context

Poetry, music and art are not luxuries; they are part of what makes a life fully human. Make room for them, for yourself and your children, even when work and exams crowd everything else out.

A famous jibe at a life without literature, music or art.

1.13 Bhartrihari

Those who have neither learning, nor austerity, nor generosity, nor knowledge, nor good character, nor virtue, nor righteousness, are a burden on the earth in this mortal world; they roam about as animals in human form.

Use this as a mirror for yourself, never to call another person a burden or an animal. If you feel you are a burden, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Read as a checklist for oneself: learning, self-discipline, giving, understanding, character, good qualities, right conduct. These, not wealth or status, are what make a life count.

Bhartrihari names the qualities that make a human life worthwhile, and scorns a life lacking all of them.

1.15 Bhartrihari

śāstropaskṛta-śabda-sundara-giraḥ śiṣya-pradeyāgamā | vikhyātāḥ kavayo vasanti viṣaye yasya prabhornirdhanāḥ | taj-jāḍyaṃ vasudhādhipasya kavayastvarthaṃ vināpīśvarāḥ | kutsyāḥ syuḥ kuparīkṣakā hi maṇayo yairarghataḥ pātitāḥ ||

If in a ruler's land renowned poets live poor, whose speech is beautiful with words refined by learning and whose knowledge is worth handing on to students, that is the dullness of the king of the earth. Poets are masters even without wealth. It is the bad appraisers who deserve blame, who have lowered the price of gems.

Meaning today and context

When good work goes unrewarded, the failure is often in those who judge it, not in the work. Your worth isn't set by a poor appraiser, though a society that ignores its teachers and artists loses something.

Bhartrihari addresses a king in whose land fine poets live in poverty: the shame is the king's, not the poets'.

1.16 Bhartrihari

harturyāti na gocaraṃ kimapi śaṃ puṣṇāti yatsarvadā'py | arthibhyaḥ pratipādyamānamaniśaṃ prāpnoti vṛddhiṃ parām | kalpānteṣvapi na prayāti nidhanaṃ vidyākhyamantardhanaṃ | yeṣāṃ tānprati mānamujjhata nṛpāḥ kastaiḥ saha spardhate ||

It never comes within sight of a thief; it always nourishes some kind of happiness; given away constantly to those who ask, it grows greatly; even at the end of the ages it does not perish. Kings, give up your pride before those who have this inner wealth called learning. Who can compete with them?

Meaning today and context

Knowledge is the one wealth nobody can steal and that grows when you share it. Invest in learning, and respect those who have it more than those who merely have money or power.

Bhartrihari praises learning as an inner wealth beyond the reach of thieves and time, and tells kings to drop their pride before its holders.

1.17 Bhartrihari

adhigata-paramārthānpaṇḍitānmāvamaṃsthās | tṛṇamiva laghu lakṣmīrnaiva tānsaṃruṇaddhi | abhinava-mada-lekhā-śyāma-gaṇḍa-sthalānāṃ | na bhavati bisatanturvāraṇaṃ vāraṇānām ||

Do not slight wise people who have grasped the highest truth. Wealth, light as a blade of grass, cannot hold them back. A lotus fibre is no restraint for elephants whose temples are dark with fresh streaks of rut.

Meaning today and context

People who are rich in understanding can't be bought or controlled with money, so don't try, and don't look down on them for having less. Respect earned by wisdom outlasts respect bought with wealth.

A warning not to belittle the truly learned: wealth has as little hold on them as a lotus fibre on a rutting elephant.

1.18 Bhartrihari

ambhojinī-vana-vihāra-vilāsameva | haṃsasya hanti nitarāṃ kupito vidhātā | na tvasya dugdha-jala-bheda-vidhau prasiddhāṃ | vaidagdhī-kīrtimapahartumasau samarthaḥ ||

An angry Creator may utterly destroy the swan's delight of sporting in the lotus groves, but he cannot take away its famous skill in separating milk from water.

Meaning today and context

Bad luck can take your job, your comforts, your circumstances, but not the skill and judgement you have built. In a setback, that is what you still own and can build on.

The image of the swan, famed for separating milk from water: fate can take away its comforts but not its skill.

1.19 Bhartrihari

Armlets do not adorn a man, nor necklaces bright as the moon, nor bathing, nor perfumed ointment, nor flowers, nor well-dressed hair. Speech alone adorns a man, refined speech that he holds to. All other ornaments wear away; the ornament of speech is the true ornament.

Meaning today and context

Looks, clothes and gadgets impress for a moment; the way you speak stays with people. Cultivating thoughtful, clear and kind speech is an investment that doesn't wear out.

Bhartrihari's famous verse on speech as the only lasting ornament.

1.20 Bhartrihari

vidyā nāma narasya rūpamadhikaṃ pracchanna-guptaṃ dhanaṃ | vidyā bhogakarī yaśaḥ-sukhakarī vidyā gurūṇāṃ guruḥ | vidyā bandhujano videśa-gamane vidyā parā devatā | vidyā rājasu pūjyate na tu dhanaṃ vidyā-vihīnaḥ paśuḥ ||

Learning is a person's greater beauty, a wealth hidden and guarded. Learning brings enjoyment, fame and happiness; learning is the teacher of teachers. Learning is one's kin when travelling abroad; learning is the highest deity. Learning, not wealth, is honoured among kings. One without learning is a beast.

"One without learning is a beast" is poetic exaggeration in praise of learning; never use it to demean anyone who lacked the chance to study.

Meaning today and context

What you learn travels with you, cannot be taken, and opens doors far from home. When choosing where to put your time and money, learning is rarely the wrong choice.

Bhartrihari's celebrated praise of learning (vidya) as beauty, hidden treasure, friend abroad and highest deity.

1.21 Bhartrihari

If there is forbearance, what need of armour? If there is anger in a person, what need of enemies? If there are kinsmen, what need of fire? If there is a true friend, what use are divine medicines? If there are wicked people, what need of snakes? If there is flawless learning, what need of riches? If there is modesty, what need of ornaments? If there is fine poetry, what need of a kingdom?

Forbearance does not mean staying in abuse, and a friend's support is not a substitute for medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

Patience protects you better than any defence, and your own anger does you more harm than any rival. A real friend heals more than medicine. Look inward before looking for outer remedies.

A chain of riddles: inner qualities make outer things unnecessary, while inner faults are worse than outer dangers.

Courtesy toward one's own people, kindness toward servants, guile always toward the wicked, affection toward the good, tact toward rulers, straightforwardness toward the learned, courage toward enemies, patience toward elders, boldness toward women one loves: the people skilled in these arts are the ones on whom the world rests.

"Guile toward the wicked" means being alert and not naive, not a licence for deceit or revenge. "Boldness toward women" reflects the courtly view of its time; it never excuses pressing anyone without clear consent.

Meaning today and context

Social skill means meeting each person in the right way: warmth for family, kindness for those who work for you, honesty with experts, care with those in power, and caution with people who mean harm.

Bhartrihari lists how a skilled person behaves toward different kinds of people, and says the world rests on such people.

1.23 Bhartrihari

It takes away dullness of mind, sprinkles truth on one's speech, raises one's honour, removes wrongdoing, brings clarity and peace to the heart, and spreads one's good name in every direction. Tell me, what does the company of good people not do for a person?

jayanti te sukṛtino | rasa-siddhāḥ kavīśvarāḥ | nāsti yeṣāṃ yaśaḥkāye | jarā-maraṇa-jaṃ bhayam ||

Victorious are those meritorious masters of poetry, perfected in rasa, for whose body of fame there is no fear born of old age and death.

Meaning today and context

The body ages, but good work, a poem, a teaching, a kindness, can outlive us. Putting yourself into something that lasts is one honest answer to the fear of ageing.

Praise of great poets, whose fame outlives them.

A son of good conduct, a faithful and beloved wife, a gracious master, an affectionate friend, honest servants, a mind without a trace of distress, a pleasing appearance, steady wealth, and a face bright with learning: these an embodied being gains when Hari, who removes the troubles of the world, is pleased.

A traditional picture of blessings, not a measure of anyone's worth or faith: lacking a child, a spouse, health or wealth does not mean God is displeased with you.

Meaning today and context

A good family, true friends, a calm mind and honest work are the real riches of life, and much of it is grace, not only our doing. Gratitude for what we have is part of keeping it.

Bhartrihari lists the blessings of a happy householder's life and says they come when Hari (Vishnu) is pleased.

Refraining from taking life; restraint from seizing others' wealth; truthful speech; giving at the right time according to one's means; silence about other men's young wives; breaking the stream of craving; humility toward teachers and elders; compassion for all beings: this is the path to the highest good, common to all the scriptures, a rule no one disputes.

Meaning today and context

Across traditions, the basics of a good life are the same: don't harm, don't take what isn't yours, tell the truth, give what you can, don't gossip, rein in endless wanting, stay humble, and be kind to every living being.

Bhartrihari sums up the path to the highest good that all scriptures agree on.

1.27 Bhartrihari

The lowest do not begin anything, for fear of obstacles. The middling begin, but stop when obstacles strike. The best, though struck down by obstacles again and again, do not give up what they have begun.

Persistence is not ignoring your health or every warning sign; sometimes changing course is wise. If repeated failure leaves you feeling hopeless, please talk to someone: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Fear of failure stops many before they start, and the first setback stops many more. What sets people apart is returning to the task after being knocked down, again and again.

Bhartrihari's famous verse on three kinds of people and how they face obstacles.

1.28 Bhartrihari

The wicked are not to be begged from; a friend of slender means is not to be asked for anything; an honest livelihood is dear; a base deed is hard to do even if one's life is at stake; in misfortune one should stand tall; and one should follow the footsteps of the great. Who taught the good this hard vow, sharp as the edge of a sword?

Self-respect does not mean refusing help in real need: asking for support, from family, friends or services, is not shameful. If hardship leaves you hopeless, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Integrity is not easy: earning honestly, not burdening a struggling friend, refusing shortcuts that compromise you, and keeping your head up in hard times. It is a narrow path, but those who walk it keep their self-respect.

Bhartrihari describes the hard code of conduct of good people, comparing it to walking on a sword's edge.

Though wasted by hunger, weak with age, his strength failing, fallen on hard times, his lustre gone, even as his life ebbs away, his longing fixed only on a mouthful of flesh from the split temple of a mighty rutting elephant, does the lion, foremost of the proud, eat dry grass?

This is about not lowering one's character, not about refusing food, help or a humbler job. Never read it as "better to die than accept less"; if you are in crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Hard times test whether we hold on to our standards. The image is about not trading away your character, honesty or self-respect just because life is difficult.

A dog that finds a cow's bone, dirty, with only a little sinew and fat left on it and no flesh, is delighted, though it cannot even satisfy its hunger. A lion lets go even of a jackal that has come into its grasp and kills an elephant. Everyone, even in distress, wants a reward that matches his own spirit.

In this revolving world, who that has died is not born again? He alone is truly born by whose birth his family rises to greater heights.

"Raising the family" means doing good for those around you, not a burden of status or achievement; no one's life is worthless for falling short of others' expectations. If you feel that way, Tele-MANAS 14416.

There are five or six other honoured planets, Jupiter and the rest, yet Rahu, who delights in exceptional valour, bears them no enmity. He seizes only those two luminaries, the lord of the day and the lord of the night. See, brother, at the eclipse: the demon chief, though nothing but a head!

Picking worthy challenges is not a call to pick fights or attack anyone.

Meaning today and context

People of real spirit measure themselves against worthy challenges, not easy targets. Even with limited means, choose goals and rivals that stretch you.

Using the myth of Rahu, the demon head who swallows sun and moon in eclipses, Bhartrihari says the great choose great opponents.

Shesha carries the rows of worlds resting on the broad plates of his hoods; he in turn is always borne on the middle of the back of the king of tortoises; and the ocean, without a thought, holds even that tortoise in its lap. Ah, boundless are the glories of the conduct of the great!

Meaning today and context

Behind every great support there is a greater one, quietly carrying it. Truly great people bear heavy loads without fuss or display.

A chain of mythic greatness: the serpent Shesha holds the worlds, the tortoise holds Shesha, and the ocean holds even the tortoise.

Better to have had his wings cut off by the blows of the thunderbolt hurled by proud Indra, heavy with bursts of rising, abundant flame, than that the son of the snowy mountain, ah, while his father was overwhelmed with suffering, should have taken that plunge into the waters of the lord of waters. It was not fitting.

Meaning today and context

Running to safety while those who depend on you are suffering can cost more than the harm you avoid. Standing by family in their trouble matters.

The myth of Mainaka, son of the Himalaya, who escaped Indra's thunderbolt (which cut off the mountains' wings) by hiding in the ocean while his father suffered. Bhartrihari says losing his wings would have been better than that.

siṃhaḥ śiśurapi nipatati | mada-malina-kapola-bhittiṣu gajeṣu | prakṛtiriyaṃ sattvavatāṃ | na khalu vayastejaso hetuḥ ||

A lion, even as a cub, springs upon elephants whose broad temples are dark with rut. This is the nature of those who have spirit: age is surely not the cause of courage.

Meaning today and context

Being young or new does not mean you must wait your turn to be capable. Courage and ability come from who you are and what you are ready to take on, not from how many years you have.

Bhartrihari, in the section on courage and spirit, uses the image of a lion cub attacking full-grown elephants to say that strength comes from inner nature, not from age.

1.38 Bhartrihari

Let birth sink to the underworld, and let all the virtues go lower still; let good conduct fall off a cliff and noble family burn in the fire; let a thunderbolt strike valour, our enemy. Let us have wealth alone, without which all these virtues are worth no more than a blade of grass.

Satire on the money-minded view, not advice: it does not say character, family or courage are worthless. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

This is satire: it shows how the world often talks once money becomes the only measure. Seeing that attitude clearly, in others or in ourselves, helps us not to give up our character for it.

Bhartrihari opens his verses on wealth by voicing, in mock seriousness, the attitude of the money-minded: let every other good go, so long as there is money.

1.39 Bhartrihari to Rama

dhanamarjaya kākutstha | dhana-mūlamidaṃ jagat | antaraṃ nābhijānāmi | nirdhanasya mṛtasya ca ||

Earn wealth, O Kākutstha: this world has wealth for its root. I see no difference between a man without money and a dead man.

A person without money is not 'as good as dead'. If you are in financial distress and feel hopeless, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

The verse is frank that earning a living matters and that society can treat the poor as invisible. It is a reason to take earning seriously, not a verdict on anyone's worth.

A quoted maxim in the section on wealth, addressed to 'Kākutstha' (a descendant of Kakutstha, i.e. Rama), stating bluntly how much the world turns on money.

1.40 Bhartrihari

tānīndriyāṇyavikalāni tadeva nāma | sā buddhirapratihatā vacanaṃ tadeva | arthoṣmaṇā virahitaḥ puruṣaḥ kṣaṇena | so'pyanya eva bhavatīti vicitrametat ||

The same senses, unimpaired; the same name; the same unhindered intelligence; the same speech. Yet a man stripped of the warmth of wealth becomes, in a moment, someone else. How strange this is!

Meaning today and context

After a job loss or a business failure, people may treat you differently, and you may even feel like a different person. The verse points out that you are the same: your abilities and mind have not gone anywhere.

Bhartrihari observes, with wry wonder, how a man who loses his money is treated as a different person though nothing in him has changed.

1.41 Bhartrihari

yasyāsti vittaṃ sa naraḥ kulīnaḥ | sa paṇḍitaḥ sa śrutavānguṇajñaḥ | sa eva vaktā sa ca darśanīyaḥ | sarve guṇāḥ kāñcanamāśrayanti ||

Whoever has money is of good family; he is learned, well-read, a judge of merit; he is the speaker worth hearing, and he is handsome. All virtues take shelter in gold.

Meaning today and context

People often mistake money for merit and listen to the rich as if they were wise. Knowing this helps us judge people, and ourselves, by what they actually are.

Bhartrihari, ironically, lists the virtues society credits to anyone with money.

1.42 Bhartrihari

daurmantryānnṛpatirvinaśyati yatiḥ saṅgātsuto lālanāt | vipro'nadhyayanātkulaṃ kutanayācchīlaṃ khalopāsanāt | hrīrmadyādanavekṣaṇādapi kṛṣiḥ snehaḥ pravāsāśrayān | maitrī cāpraṇayātsamṛddhiranayāttyāga-pramādāddhanam ||

A king is ruined by bad counsel, an ascetic by attachment, a son by over-indulgence, a learned brahmin by giving up study, a family by a bad son, character by serving the wicked, modesty by drink, farming by neglect, affection by living far away, friendship by lack of warmth, prosperity by bad policy, and wealth by reckless spending and carelessness.

'Brahmin' here means a person of learning, whose standing depends on study, not on birth. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Most things are not lost in one blow but through a steady neglect: poor advisers, spoiling children, not keeping up learning, not tending a relationship. The verse is a checklist for what we may be quietly letting slide.

A list-verse of nīti: Bhartrihari names what ruins each thing, from a king to a farm to a friendship.

1.43 Bhartrihari

dānaṃ bhogo nāśastisro | gatayo bhavanti vittasya | yo na dadāti na bhuṅkte | tasya tṛtīyā gatirbhavati ||

Wealth has three possible ends: giving, enjoying, and loss. For one who neither gives nor enjoys, the third end is what comes.

Not financial advice: the verse is against miserliness, not against sensible saving.

Meaning today and context

Money hoarded out of fear is neither used well nor shared, and in the end it is simply lost. Use what you have, and give some of it, while it can still do good.

Bhartrihari states the three possible ends of wealth.

1.44 Bhartrihari

maṇiḥ śāṇollīḍhaḥ samara-vijayī heti-dalito | mada-kṣīṇo nāgaḥ śaradi saritaḥ śyāna-pulināḥ | kalā-śeṣaścandraḥ surata-mṛditā bāla-vanitā | tanimnā śobhante galita-vibhavāścārthiṣu narāḥ ||

A gem ground on the whetstone, a victor in battle scarred by weapons, an elephant lean after its rut, autumn rivers with their sandbanks drying, the moon with only a sliver left, a young bride tired after love, and men whose wealth has gone in giving to those who asked: all these shine by their very thinness.

Meaning today and context

Being worn down by doing something worthwhile, like giving, struggling, or loving, is not a loss of dignity. A person who has less because they gave generously carries a quiet beauty.

Bhartrihari gives a string of images of things that grow more beautiful by being worn thin, ending with people who have given their wealth away to those in need.

1.45 Bhartrihari

A man worn down by want longs for a handful of barley; later, when he is full, he counts the whole earth as a straw. So, because value in matters of wealth is never fixed as heavy or light, it is a person's condition that makes things seem great or makes them shrink.

Meaning today and context

What feels essential when we lack it feels trivial once we have it. Remembering this keeps us from despairing in hard times and from becoming arrogant or dismissive in good ones.

Bhartrihari observes how a person's circumstances change the value they place on things.

1.47 Bhartrihari

Truthful and false, harsh and sweet-spoken, cruel and kind, grasping and generous, always spending and always taking in plenty: like a courtesan, the policy of kings takes many forms.

A description of how power behaves, not permission to lie or deceive. The courtesan simile reflects its time and is not a judgement on any woman.

Meaning today and context

Power and politics rarely follow one simple rule; those who hold office often switch between firmness and softness as suits them. It is a description to help us understand the powerful, not a model to copy.

Bhartrihari describes the shifting, many-sided character of royal policy, comparing it to a courtesan who shows a different face to each situation.

1.49 Bhartrihari

yaddhātrā nija-bhāla-paṭṭa-likhitaṃ stokaṃ mahadvā dhanaṃ | tatprāpnoti marusthale'pi nitarāṃ merau tato nādhikam | taddhīro bhava vittavatsu kṛpaṇāṃ vṛttiṃ vṛthā sā kṛthāḥ | kūpe paśya payonidhāvapi ghaṭo gṛhṇāti tulyaṃ jalam ||

Whatever wealth, small or great, the Creator has written on one's forehead, that one obtains even in a desert, and no more even on Mount Meru. So be steady; do not pointlessly play the beggar before the rich. Look: a pot takes up the same amount of water from a well as from the ocean.

About dignity and contentment, not a reason to stop working or to accept poverty as fate. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Flattering rich or powerful people rarely gets you more than your own capacity and effort would. Keep your dignity: work for what you need, and do not humiliate yourself chasing favours.

Bhartrihari counsels steadiness about money: one receives what is destined, so there is no point in grovelling before the rich.

1.50 Chataka bird to Cloud

tvameva cātakādhāro | 'sīti keṣāṃ na gocaraḥ | kimambhoda-varāsmākaṃ | kārpaṇyoktaṃ pratīkṣase ||

'You alone are the cātaka's support; who does not know this? Then why, best of clouds, do you wait for us to speak pitiful words?'

Meaning today and context

If someone depends on you, a parent, an employee, a friend in need, do not make them beg. Give what is needed before they have to ask in humiliation.

An allegorical verse: the cātaka bird, which by legend drinks only raindrops, speaks to the rain cloud, its sole patron. The cātaka stands for a dependent and the cloud for a generous patron.
