Verses 251–300

1.251 Guru to Disciple

mṛtkāryaṃ sakalaṃ ghaṭādi satataṃ mṛnmātramevāhitaṃ | tadvatsajjanitaṃ sadātmakamidaṃ sanmātramevākhilam | yasmānnāsti sataḥ paraṃ kimapi tatsatyaṃ sa ātmā svayaṃ | tasmāttattvamasi praśāntamamalaṃ brahmādvayaṃ yatparam ||

Everything made of clay, the pot and the rest, is always clay alone. In the same way, all this, born of Being, is of the nature of Being, nothing but Being. Since there is nothing at all beyond Being, that is the truth, and that is the Self itself. Therefore you are that: the peaceful, stainless, non-dual Brahman, the highest.

Meaning today and context

Shapes and names change; the substance stays. Seeing that the same reality runs through you and everything else can soften the sense of being a separate, threatened fragment.

The guru gives the clay-and-pot example and the refrain 'therefore you are that'.

1.252 Guru to Disciple

nidrākalpitadeśakālaviṣayajñātrādi sarvaṃ yathā | mithyā tadvadihāpi jāgrati jagatsvājñānakāryatvataḥ | yasmādevamidaṃ śarīrakaraṇaprāṇāhamādyapyasat | tasmāttattvamasi praśāntamamalaṃ brahmādvayaṃ yatparam ||

Just as in sleep the place, time, objects, knower and all else imagined are unreal, so too is the world here in waking, because it is the product of one's own ignorance. Since this body, the senses, the life-breath, the ego and the rest are likewise unreal, therefore you are that: the peaceful, stainless, non-dual Brahman, the highest.

'Unreal' here is a philosophical claim about the Self, not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or treatment. If you feel that life or the world is unreal in a distressing way, please talk to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When you wake from a nightmare, its terrors lose their hold. The verse invites a similar waking in daily life: problems remain to be handled, but they need not define who you are.

The guru compares the waking world to a dream, both products of ignorance, and repeats 'therefore you are that'.

1.253 Guru to Disciple

yatra bhrāntyā kalpitaṃ tadviveke | tattanmātraṃ naiva tasmādvibhinnam | svapne naṣṭaṃ svapnaviśvaṃ vicitraṃ | svasmādbhinnaṃ kinnu dṛṣṭaṃ prabodhe ||

What is imagined through error in something is, on discrimination, just that thing and not different from it. The varied dream world vanishes with the dream; is it ever seen, on waking, as something apart from oneself?

Meaning today and context

The worlds your mind builds, worries, imagined scenes, are made of your own mind. Seeing that can take away some of their power to frighten you.

The guru argues that whatever is imagined on a substratum is, when examined, nothing but that substratum, as a dream world is nothing apart from the dreamer.

1.254 Guru to Disciple

jātinītikulagotradūragaṃ | nāmarūpaguṇadoṣavarjitam | deśakālaviṣayātivarti yad | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is far beyond caste, custom, family and lineage, free of name, form, merit and fault, which transcends place, time and objects: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Your deepest identity has nothing to do with caste, family name or social standing. No label others put on you reaches what you really are.

The guru begins a series of verses on Brahman, each ending 'meditate in yourself: you are that Brahman'.

1.255 Guru to Disciple

yatparaṃ sakalavāgagocaraṃ | gocaraṃ vimalabodhacakṣuṣaḥ | śuddhacidghanamanādi vastu yad | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is supreme, beyond the reach of all speech, yet within the reach of the eye of pure awakening, the reality that is a mass of pure consciousness, without beginning: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Some things can't be explained in words but can be known directly, the way you know you exist. The verse points to that direct knowing.

The guru continues the refrain on Brahman: beyond words, seen only by the eye of pure knowledge.

1.256 Guru to Disciple

ṣaḍbhirūrmibhirayogi yogihṛd- | bhāvitaṃ na karaṇairvibhāvitam | buddhyavedyamanavadyamasti yad | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is untouched by the six waves, contemplated in the hearts of yogis, not grasped by the senses, unknowable by the intellect, faultless: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Hunger, grief, ageing and fear of death touch the body and mind. The verse says there is a deeper you that these waves move over without harming.

The guru continues: Brahman is untouched by the six 'waves' of hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, decay and death.

1.257 Guru to Disciple

bhrāntikalpitajagatkalāśrayaṃ | svāśrayaṃ ca sadasadvilakṣaṇam | niṣkalaṃ nirupamānavaddhi yad | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is the support of the world's parts imagined through error, yet rests on itself, distinct from both being and non-being, without parts, beyond all comparison: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

You are the steady ground on which your experiences appear, not any one of them. That ground does not need anything else to hold it up.

The guru continues the refrain: Brahman is the ground on which the imagined world rests, resting on itself.

1.258 Guru to Disciple

janmavṛddhipariṇatyapakṣaya- | vyādhināśanavihīnamavyayam | viśvasṛṣṭyavavighātakāraṇaṃ | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is free of birth, growth, change, decline, disease and destruction, imperishable, the cause of the world's creation, preservation and dissolution: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Knowing the Self is beyond illness is not a substitute for medical care. See a doctor when you are unwell.

Meaning today and context

The body is born, grows, ages and falls ill. Knowing that your deepest Self does not go through these changes can bring steadiness when facing illness or ageing.

The guru continues: Brahman is free of birth, growth, change, decline, disease and death, and is the cause of the world's creation, preservation and dissolution.

1.259 Guru to Disciple

astabhedamanapāstalakṣaṇaṃ | nistaraṅgajalarāśiniścalam | nityamuktamavibhaktamūrti yad | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That in which all difference has ceased, whose nature is never lost, motionless like an ocean without waves, ever free, of undivided form: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Beneath a restless mind there is a stillness like an ocean without waves. You don't have to create it; you can rest in it.

The guru continues: Brahman is still like a waveless ocean, ever free, undivided.

1.260 Guru to Disciple

ekameva sadanekakāraṇaṃ | kāraṇāntaranirāsyakāraṇam | kāryakāraṇavilakṣaṇaṃ svayaṃ | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is one, real, the cause of the many, the cause that rules out any other cause and has none itself, distinct from cause and effect: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Everything in life seems to depend on something else. The verse points to a reality that depends on nothing, and says that is what you are at root.

The guru continues: Brahman is one, the cause of many, itself without a cause, beyond cause and effect.

1.261 Guru to Disciple

nirvikalpakamanalpamakṣaraṃ | yatkṣarākṣaravilakṣaṇaṃ param | nityamavyayasukhaṃ nirañjanaṃ | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which is free of all mental distinctions, vast, imperishable, supreme and distinct from both the perishable and the imperishable, eternal, of undecaying bliss, stainless: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

Happiness from things fades. The verse speaks of a joy that is your own nature and does not decay.

The guru continues: Brahman is beyond all mental distinctions, beyond the perishable and the imperishable.

1.262 Guru to Disciple

yadvibhāti sadanekadhā bhramān | nāmarūpaguṇavikriyātmanā | hemavatsvayamavikriyaṃ sadā | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which, being real, appears through error in many ways as name, form, quality and change, yet itself, like gold, is ever unchanging: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

A gold ring, chain or coin are all gold. Your roles, moods and stages of life are many, but what you are underneath does not change.

The guru continues with the image of gold: Brahman appears as many through error, yet never changes.

1.263 Guru to Disciple

yaccakāstyanaparaṃ parātparaṃ | pratyagekarasamātmalakṣaṇam | satyacitsukhamanantamavyayaṃ | brahma tattvamasi bhāvayātmani ||

That which shines with nothing beyond it, higher than the highest, the inmost, of one essence, marked as the Self, truth-consciousness-bliss, endless, imperishable: that Brahman you are. Meditate on this in yourself.

Meaning today and context

What you look for outside, truth, awareness and joy, is described here as your own innermost nature. The search can turn inward.

The guru ends the refrain series: Brahman shines as the inmost Self, truth, consciousness and bliss.

1.264 Guru to Disciple

uktamarthamimamātmani svayaṃ | bhāvayetprathitayuktibhirdhiyā | saṃśayādirahitaṃ karāmbuvat | tena tattvanigamo bhaviṣyati ||

One should, by oneself, contemplate in one's own mind the meaning taught here, with the well-known reasonings, until it is free of doubt and the rest, as clear as water in the palm of the hand. By that, certainty about the truth will come.

Meaning today and context

Hearing a teaching is not enough; think it through yourself until your doubts are settled. Real understanding is your own, not borrowed.

The guru tells the disciple to contemplate this teaching himself, with reasoning, until it is as clear as water held in the palm.

1.265 Guru to Disciple

saṃbodhamātraṃ pariśuddhatattvaṃ | vijñāya saṅghe nṛpavacca sainye | tadāśrayaḥ svātmani sarvadā sthito | vilāpaya brahmaṇi viśvajātam ||

Knowing the purified reality, pure awareness alone, as one recognises the king amid the throng of his army, take refuge in it, abide always in your own Self, and dissolve everything born in the world into Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Amid the crowd of thoughts, feelings and sensations, there is the one who is aware of them all. Learning to recognise that awareness gives a stable place to stand.

The guru tells the disciple to recognise pure awareness amid the body-mind complex, as one picks out the king in an army, and to dissolve the world into Brahman.

1.266 Guru to Disciple

buddhau guhāyāṃ sadasadvilakṣaṇaṃ | brahmāsti satyaṃ paramadvitīyam | tadātmanā yo'tra vasedguhāyāṃ | punarna tasyāṅgaguhāpraveśaḥ ||

In the cave of the intellect is Brahman, real, supreme, without a second, distinct from being and non-being. One who lives here in that cave as that Self does not again enter the cave of a body.

Meaning today and context

The deepest truth is not far away; it is found within, in the depth of your own understanding. Living from there is what the text calls freedom.

The guru says Brahman is in the cave of the intellect, and one who dwells in it as the Self does not enter a body again.

1.267 Guru to Disciple

jñāte vastunyapi balavatī vāsanānādireṣā | kartā bhoktāpyahamiti dṛḍhā yāsya saṃsārahetuḥ | pratyagdṛṣṭyātmani nivasatā sāpaneyā prayatnān | muktiṃ prāhustadiha munayo vāsanātānavaṃ yat ||

Even when the reality is known, this beginningless tendency remains strong: the firm sense 'I am the doer and the enjoyer', which is the cause of one's bondage. It must be removed with effort, by living in the Self with an inward gaze. The sages here call liberation the thinning of these tendencies.

Meaning today and context

Understanding something is not the same as living it. Old habits of thinking come back even after insight, and patient, steady practice is needed to wear them down.

The guru warns that even after the truth is known, the beginningless habit-tendency (vāsanā) of 'I am the doer and enjoyer' remains strong and must be removed with effort.

1.268 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃ mameti yo bhāvo dehākṣādāvanātmani | adhyāso'yaṃ nirastavyo viduṣā svātmaniṣṭhayā ||

The feeling of 'I' and 'mine' in the body, the senses and other things that are not the Self: this superimposition must be removed by the wise through steadiness in their own Self.

Meaning today and context

'I' and 'mine' cause much of our pain: my body, my looks, my things. Loosening that grip does not mean not caring; it means not being crushed when they change.

The guru says the wise must remove, by abiding in the Self, the superimposition of 'I' and 'mine' on the body and senses.

1.269 Guru to Disciple

jñātvā svaṃ pratyagātmānaṃ buddhitadvṛttisākṣiṇam | so'hamityeva sadvṛttyānātmanyātmamatiṃ jahi ||

Knowing yourself as the inner Self, the witness of the intellect and its movements, give up, through the true thought 'I am that', the notion of selfhood in what is not the Self.

Meaning today and context

You can watch your own thoughts. Whatever you can watch is not the watcher. Remembering this can give some distance from anxious or harsh thoughts about yourself.

The guru tells the disciple to know himself as the inner witness of the intellect and its states, and drop the sense of self in what is not the Self.

1.270 Guru to Disciple

lokānuvartanaṃ tyaktvā tyaktvā dehānuvartanam | śāstrānuvartanaṃ tyaktvā svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Give up conforming to the world, give up pampering the body, give up the obsession with scriptural learning, and remove the superimposition on yourself.

This is about inner attachment, not a call to neglect your health, cut off from people or stop learning. Care for the body and keep your responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Living for others' approval, for the body's comforts, or for collecting knowledge can all keep you from looking at yourself honestly. The verse asks what you are doing with all of it.

The guru tells the disciple to give up following the world, the body and even scripture (as an end in itself) and remove his own superimposition.

1.271 Guru to Disciple

lokavāsanayā jantoḥ śāstravāsanayāpi ca | dehavāsanayā jñānaṃ yathāvannaiva jāyate ||

Because of a person's craving for the world, for scriptural learning, and for the body, true knowledge does not arise as it should.

Meaning today and context

Worry about reputation, pride in learning, and preoccupation with the body each pull attention outward. Noticing which one grips you most is a useful first step.

The guru explains why: the three tendencies toward the world, scripture and the body block true knowledge.

saṃsārakārāgṛhamokṣamicchor | ayomayaṃ pādanibandhaśṛṅkhalam | vadanti tajjñāḥ paṭu vāsanātrayaṃ | yo'smādvimuktaḥ samupaiti muktim ||

Those who know call these three strong tendencies iron chains binding the feet of one who longs to escape the prison of worldly existence. One who is freed from them attains liberation.

Meaning today and context

Habits of seeking approval, comfort and status can feel like chains. Seeing them as chains is the first step to loosening them.

The guru calls these three tendencies iron fetters on the feet of one seeking release from the prison of worldly life.

jalādisaṃsargavaśātprabhūta- | durgandhadhūtāgarudivyavāsanā | saṃgharṣaṇenaiva vibhāti samyag- | vidhūyamāne sati bāhyagandhe ||

The divine fragrance of agarwood, overpowered by strong foul smells through contact with water and the like, shines forth fully only when it is rubbed and the outer odour is driven off.

Meaning today and context

Your true nature is not lost, only covered. Effort does not create it; effort removes what hides it.

The guru gives an image: agarwood whose fragrance is masked by foul smells from contact with water reveals it again when rubbed.

antaḥśritānantadurantavāsanā- | dhūlīviliptā paramātmavāsanā | prajñātisaṃgharṣaṇato viśuddhā | pratīyate candanagandhavatsphuṭam ||

The fragrance of the Supreme Self, smeared with the dust of endless, harmful tendencies lodged within, becomes pure through the intense rubbing of wisdom, and is perceived clearly, like the scent of sandalwood.

Meaning today and context

Like sandalwood releasing its scent when ground, the goodness and clarity in you show more as you work steadily on your understanding.

The guru applies the image: the fragrance of the Self, covered by the dust of countless inner tendencies, becomes clear through the intense friction of wisdom, like sandalwood.

anātmavāsanājālaistirobhūtātmavāsanā | nityātmaniṣṭhayā teṣāṃ nāśe bhāti svayaṃ sphuṭam ||

The awareness of the Self is hidden by the nets of tendencies toward the not-Self. When these are destroyed through constant steadiness in the Self, it shines forth clearly by itself.

Meaning today and context

You don't have to force peace or clarity. Steadily turning toward your deeper Self lets the clutter thin out, and what was always there becomes visible.

The guru says the awareness of the Self, hidden by nets of tendencies toward the not-Self, shines by itself when they are destroyed through constant abiding in the Self.

1.276 Guru to Disciple

yathā yathā pratyagavasthitaṃ manaḥ | tathā tathā muñcati bāhyavāsanām | niḥśeṣamokṣe sati vāsanānāṃ | ātmānubhūtiḥ pratibandhaśūnyā ||

As the mind becomes more and more established inward, so it lets go more and more of outward tendencies. When the tendencies are completely released, the experience of the Self is free of all obstruction.

Meaning today and context

Progress is gradual: each time you rest your attention inward, outer cravings loosen a little. Small, regular steps add up.

The guru describes the practice: the more the mind rests inward, the more it releases outer tendencies, until Self-experience is unobstructed.

1.277 Guru to Disciple

svātmanyeva sadā sthitvā mano naśyati yoginaḥ | vāsanānāṃ kṣayaścātaḥ svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

By always abiding in one's own Self, the mind of the yogi dissolves, and from that comes the destruction of tendencies. Therefore remove the superimposition on yourself.

Meaning today and context

When you rest in who you are rather than in your worries, the restless mind quiets and old patterns lose fuel.

The guru says by always abiding in the Self the yogi's restless mind subsides, and with it the tendencies; the refrain 'remove your superimposition' begins.

1.278 Guru to Disciple

tamo dvābhyāṃ rajaḥ sattvātsattvaṃ śuddhena naśyati | tasmātsattvamavaṣṭabhya svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Tamas is destroyed by the other two, rajas by sattva, and sattva by the purified (sattva). Therefore, relying on sattva, remove the superimposition on yourself.

Meaning today and context

Change happens in steps: from inertia to activity, from restless activity to calm clarity, and from there to something beyond. Start where you are.

The guru explains the guṇas: tamas is overcome by rajas and sattva, rajas by sattva, and sattva by pure sattva; so rely on sattva.

1.279 Guru to Disciple

prārabdhaṃ puṣyati vapuriti niścitya niścalaḥ | dhairyamālambya yatnena svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Knowing for certain that prārabdha karma will sustain the body, stay unshaken, hold on to steadiness, and with effort remove the superimposition on yourself.

Trusting prārabdha does not mean neglecting food, health or medical care.

Meaning today and context

Some things will run their course whatever you do. Accepting that frees energy for what you can work on: your own understanding and conduct.

The guru says the body is sustained by prārabdha (past karma already in motion); being sure of this, remove your superimposition steadily.

1.280 Guru to Disciple

nāhaṃ jīvaḥ paraṃ brahmetyatadvyāvṛttipūrvakam | vāsanāvegataḥ prāptasvādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Through 'I am not the individual soul; I am the supreme Brahman', first excluding all that is not That, remove the superimposition that has come back through the force of tendencies.

Meaning today and context

Old self-images return under pressure. Each time, you can gently say 'that is not who I am' and come back to a truer sense of yourself.

The guru tells the disciple to remove, by setting aside what he is not, the superimposition that returns through the force of tendencies.

1.281 Guru to Disciple

śrutyā yuktyā svānubhūtyā jñātvā sārvātmyamātmanaḥ | kvacidābhāsataḥ prāptasvādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Having known through scripture, reasoning and your own experience that the Self is the Self of all, remove the superimposition on yourself whenever it appears, even as a faint semblance.

Meaning today and context

Understanding is firmest when it rests on three legs: what wise texts say, careful thinking, and your own experience. Then even small slips can be noticed and corrected.

The guru tells the disciple, having known through scripture, reasoning and his own experience that the Self is all, to remove any superimposition that appears even faintly.

1.282 Guru to Disciple

anādānavisargābhyāmīṣannāsti kriyā muneḥ | tadekaniṣṭhayā nityaṃ svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Since the sage neither takes nor gives up anything, he has not the slightest activity. Therefore, always with single-minded steadiness in That, remove the superimposition on yourself.

This describes the Self, not a rule to stop working or caring for others.

Meaning today and context

At the deepest level the Self does nothing and wants nothing. Resting there, one can act in the world without the inner grabbing and pushing away that wears us out.

The guru says the sage, who neither takes nor gives up anything, has not the least activity; so be steadfast in That.

tattvamasyādivākyotthabrahmātmaikatvabodhataḥ | brahmaṇyātmatvadārḍhyāya svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

With the knowledge of the oneness of Brahman and the Self that arises from sayings like 'that you are', remove the superimposition on yourself so that your identity with Brahman becomes firm.

Meaning today and context

An insight has to be lived again and again before it becomes second nature. Repetition is not dull here; it is how understanding takes root.

The guru says to remove superimposition so that the knowledge of oneness arising from 'that you are' becomes firm.

1.284 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃbhāvasya dehe'sminniḥśeṣavilayāvadhi | sāvadhānena yuktātmā svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

Until the sense of 'I' in this body has dissolved without remainder, remain attentive and self-controlled, and remove the superimposition on yourself.

Meaning today and context

Inner work is not finished after one insight. Stay alert; ego reasserts itself in subtle ways.

The guru says to remove superimposition attentively until the sense of 'I' in this body has completely dissolved.

1.285 Guru to Disciple

pratītirjīvajagatoḥ svapnavadbhāti yāvatā | tāvannirantaraṃ vidvansvādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru ||

As long as the perception of the individual and the world appears, even as a dream, so long, O learned one, remove the superimposition on yourself without a break.

Meaning today and context

Don't declare victory too soon. As long as you are still caught in your story, keep practising gently and steadily.

The guru says to remove superimposition continuously as long as the individual and the world still appear, even dream-like.

1.286 Guru to Disciple

nidrāyā lokavārtāyāḥ śabdāderapi vismṛteḥ | kvacinnāvasaraṃ dattvā cintayātmānamātmani ||

Giving no opening at any time to sleep, to worldly gossip, to sense objects, or to forgetfulness of the Self, contemplate the Self in yourself.

'Sleep' here means dullness and heedlessness. This is not advice to cut down on sleep; enough rest is needed for health.

Meaning today and context

Distraction, idle chatter and dullness eat up attention. Guarding your attention is how inner practice becomes real.

The guru tells the disciple to give no room to sleep, worldly talk, sense objects or forgetfulness, and to contemplate the Self in the Self.

1.287 Guru to Disciple

mātāpitrormalodbhūtaṃ malamāṃsamayaṃ vapuḥ | tyaktvā cāṇḍālavaddūraṃ brahmībhūya kṛtī bhava ||

This body, born of the impurities of mother and father, made of filth and flesh: abandon it far away, as one would a cāṇḍāla, become Brahman, and fulfil your purpose.

Never for someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth: the teaching is about identity, not self-contempt (Tele-MANAS 14416). The comparison to a cāṇḍāla reflects the caste prejudice of its time; worth is by conduct, never birth, and no one may be shunned or demeaned.

Meaning today and context

The point is not to hate the body but to stop taking it as your whole identity. The verse's caste simile reflects its time and is not a view to share.

The guru, in the renunciate language of the text, tells the disciple to drop identification with the body as one would keep away from a cāṇḍāla (an outcaste), and become Brahman.

1.288 Guru to Disciple

ghaṭākāśaṃ mahākāśa ivātmānaṃ parātmani | vilāpyākhaṇḍabhāvena tūṣṇī bhava sadā mune ||

As the space in a pot merges in the great space, so merge the individual Self in the Supreme Self, in undivided being, and be silent always, O sage.

Meaning today and context

The space inside a jar was never really separate from the sky. Seeing yourself this way can bring a deep quiet, a silence that needs no argument.

The guru tells the disciple to merge the individual Self in the Supreme, like pot-space in the great space, and remain always silent.

1.289 Guru to Disciple

svaprakāśamadhiṣṭhānaṃ svayaṃbhūya sadātmanā | brahmāṇḍamapi piṇḍāṇḍaṃ tyajyatāṃ malabhāṇḍavat ||

Becoming, as the ever-existent Self, that self-luminous ground of all, give up this whole universe and this body too, like a vessel of filth.

Calling the body a 'vessel of filth' or 'corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The point is not to hate the body or the world but to stop taking them as who you are. What you most deeply are is the light by which they are known.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the disciple to rest as the self-luminous Self and drop identification with both the cosmos and the body.

1.290 Guru to Disciple

cidātmani sadānande dehārūḍhāmahaṃdhiyam | niveśya liṅgamutsṛjya kevalo bhava sarvadā ||

Placing the sense of 'I', which now rides on the body, in the conscious Self that is ever existent and blissful, and casting off the subtle body, be forever alone, the Absolute.

Meaning today and context

Our sense of 'I' usually sits on the body and its moods. Moving it to the awareness that sees them gives a steadiness that changing circumstances cannot shake.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the disciple to place the 'I'-sense, now resting on the body, in the conscious Self, and to let go of the subtle body.

1.291 Guru to Disciple

yatraiṣa jagadābhāso darpaṇāntaḥ puraṃ yathā | tadbrahmāhamiti jñātvā kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi ||

That in which this appearance of the world shows itself, like a city reflected in a mirror: knowing 'I am that Brahman', you will have done all there is to do.

Meaning today and context

A mirror is not touched by the city it shows. Seeing that you are the awareness in which life's events appear can end the restless feeling that something more must always be achieved.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says that knowing oneself as the Brahman in which the world appears, like a city in a mirror, completes all one has to do.

yatsatyabhūtaṃ nijarūpamādyaṃ | cidadvayānandamarūpamakriyam | tadetya mithyāvapurutsṛjeta | śailūṣavadveṣamupāttamātmanaḥ ||

Having reached what is truly real, your own original nature, consciousness and non-dual bliss, formless and actionless, give up the false body as an actor gives up the costume he has put on.

Meaning today and context

An actor plays the role fully but goes home as himself. We can play our roles of job, family and status wholeheartedly without forgetting that we are more than the costume.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, compares the body to an actor's costume: on reaching one's true nature, one drops the false identity as an actor drops a role.

1.293 Guru to Disciple

sarvātmanā dṛśyamidaṃ mṛṣaiva | naivāhamarthaḥ kṣaṇikatvadarśanāt | jānāmyahaṃ sarvamiti pratītiḥ | kuto'hamādeḥ kṣaṇikasya sidhyet ||

All this that is seen is wholly false. Nor is the ego the Self, for it is seen to be momentary. How could the awareness 'I know everything' be established for the ego and the rest, which last only a moment?

Meaning today and context

The ego's moods and claims come and go by the minute. Something steadier must be there to notice all of them; that is where the verse points you.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, argues that the seen world is false and that the ego cannot be the Self, since it is momentary and cannot ground the sense 'I know everything'.

ahaṃpadārthastvahamādisākṣī | nityaṃ suṣuptāvapi bhāvadarśanāt | brūte hyajo nitya iti śrutiḥ svayaṃ | tatpratyagātmā sadasadvilakṣaṇaḥ ||

The true meaning of 'I' is the witness of the ego and the rest, eternal, for its presence is experienced even in deep sleep. Scripture itself says it is 'unborn, eternal'. That inner Self is other than both the gross and the subtle.

Meaning today and context

Even in dreamless sleep something remains, which is why you wake and say 'I slept well'. The awareness that watches the ego is not hurt by its failures or puffed up by its successes.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says the true referent of 'I' is the witness of the ego, present even in deep sleep, unborn and eternal as scripture says.

vikāriṇāṃ sarvavikāravettā | nityāvikāro bhavituṃ samarhati | manorathasvapnasuṣuptiṣu sphuṭaṃ | punaḥ punardṛṣṭamasattvametayoḥ ||

The knower of every change in changing things must be eternal and changeless. In daydreams, dreams and deep sleep, the unreality of these two (the gross and subtle bodies) is clearly seen again and again.

Meaning today and context

Every night the body and the waking world drop away in dreams, and in deep sleep the mind too. Noticing this can loosen our grip on the idea that we are only our bodies and thoughts.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, argues that the knower of all changes must itself be changeless, and that daydream, dream and deep sleep show the unreality of the two bodies.

ato'bhimānaṃ tyaja māṃsapiṇḍe | piṇḍābhimāninyapi buddhikalpite | kālatrayābādhyamakhaṇḍabodhaṃ | jñātvā svamātmānamupaihi śāntim ||

Therefore give up identifying with this lump of flesh, and with the one who identifies with it, a creation of the intellect. Knowing your Self as undivided awareness, untouched in all three times, attain peace.

Calling the body a 'vessel of filth' or 'corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our anxiety is about the body and the ego's story: looks, health, status. Knowing that what you are is not diminished by any of these can bring a quiet peace.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, concludes that one should drop identification with the body and with the ego that claims it, and find peace in knowing the undivided Self.

tyajābhimānaṃ kulagotranāma- | rūpāśrameṣvārdraśavāśriteṣu | liṅgasya dharmānapi kartṛtādīṃs | tyaktvā bhavākhaṇḍasukhasvarūpaḥ ||

Give up identifying with family, lineage, name, form and stage of life, which rest on this moist corpse, the body. Give up too the traits of the subtle body, such as doership, and be undivided bliss itself.

This is about letting go of identification, not about abandoning one's family or duties. Lineage and caste are never a measure of anyone's worth. The body called 'a corpse' is a teaching about identity, not self-contempt; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Family name, community, looks and life stage are labels we carry, not our deepest self. Holding them lightly frees us from pride in them and from shame about them.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, tells the disciple to drop identification with family, lineage, name, form and stage of life, all resting on the body, and with the subtle body's sense of being the doer.

santyanye pratibandhāḥ puṃsaḥ saṃsārahetavo dṛṣṭāḥ | teṣāmevaṃ mūlaṃ prathamavikāro bhavatyahaṃkāraḥ ||

There are other obstacles for a person, seen as causes of samsara; but their root is the ego, the first modification.

Meaning today and context

Many of our troubles, from resentment to comparison, trace back to one thing: an ego that takes everything personally. Working on that root helps more than trimming the branches.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says that of all the obstacles that keep a person in samsara, the root is the ego, the first distortion.

yāvatsyātsvasya saṃbandho'haṃkāreṇa durātmanā | tāvanna leśamātrāpi muktivārtā vilakṣaṇā ||

As long as one stays connected with the wicked ego, there is not the faintest talk of liberation, which is of a wholly different nature.

Meaning today and context

Freedom and ego-clinging cannot sit together. Spiritual talk while still guarding one's image changes little; the real work is loosening the ego's hold.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says that as long as one is bound to the ego there is not the slightest prospect of liberation.

ahaṃkāragrahānmuktaḥ svarūpamupapadyate | candravadvimalaḥ pūrṇaḥ sadānandaḥ svayaṃprabhaḥ ||

Freed from the grip of the ego, as the moon from an eclipse, one comes into one's true nature: spotless, full, ever blissful, self-luminous.

Meaning today and context

An eclipse does not damage the moon; it only hides it for a while. Your goodness and wholeness are not destroyed by ego, only covered, and they shine again when it lets go.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, compares the Self freed from ego to the moon freed from an eclipse.
