[That] is the jiva-state; apart from that, the Self is different in its own nature. The Self's connection with the intellect is preceded by false knowledge.
Meaning today and context
Your thoughts and personality are real enough to live with and care for, but your sense of being trapped inside them rests on a mistaken identification, not on what you are.
The guru continues: the jiva-state comes from the Self's apparent link with the intellect; the Self in itself is different, and the link rests on false knowledge.
Its cessation comes through right knowledge, not otherwise. Right knowledge, in the view of scripture, is the realisation that Brahman and the Self are one.
Meaning today and context
Some problems are solved by effort, others only by seeing clearly. A misunderstanding is removed by understanding, not by more striving.
The guru states the remedy: only right knowledge, which scripture defines as the oneness of Brahman and Self, ends this false connection.
tadātmānātmanoḥ samyagvivekenaiva sidhyati | tato vivekaḥ kartavyaḥ pratyagātmasadātmanoḥ ||
That is achieved only through right discrimination between the Self and the not-Self. Therefore one must practise discrimination between the inner self and the real Self.
Meaning today and context
Ask honestly: which of my experiences come and go, and what is aware of all of them? Practising this distinction is the practical heart of the teaching.
The guru gives the method: that knowledge comes through careful discrimination between Self and not-Self.
asannivṛttau tu sadātmanā sphuṭaṃ | pratītiretasya bhavetpratīcaḥ | tato nirāsaḥ karaṇīya eva | sadātmanaḥ sādhvahamādivastunaḥ ||
When the unreal is removed, this inner Self is clearly perceived as the real Self. Therefore the ego and the other things must be thoroughly set aside from the real Self.
Meaning today and context
Seeing yourself clearly is partly a matter of subtraction: noticing what you are not, such as the ego's claims, moods and self-images, and letting them go.
The guru says that when the unreal is removed the inner Self is seen as the Real, so ego and the rest must be carefully set apart from it.
Therefore this, which is called the sheath of intellect, cannot be the supreme Self, because it changes, is inert, is limited, is an object of perception and is inconstant. What is not eternal cannot be accepted as eternal.
Meaning today and context
Even your intelligence and opinions change, can be observed and have limits. That makes them valuable tools, but not the deepest 'you'.
Concluding the discussion of the intellectual sheath (vijnanamaya kosha), the guru gives reasons why it cannot be the supreme Self.
A modification of the mind, brought forth by tamas, whose form is touched by a reflection of bliss: that is the sheath of bliss. It has qualities like pleasure, and arises when a desired object is gained. It shines of itself as bliss for the fortunate when they enjoy the fruit of merit, and in it every embodied being rejoices fully, without effort.
Meaning today and context
The joy of getting what we want, or of deep rest, is real but borrowed: a reflection of something deeper. It is worth enjoying without mistaking it for the source.
The guru describes the fifth sheath, the sheath of bliss (anandamaya kosha).
This bliss sheath is not the supreme Self either, because it has a limiting adjunct, is a modification of nature, is the effect of good deeds, and rests upon the aggregate of other modifications.

Even the best feelings, the glow of doing good or of deep contentment, come and go. They are welcome, but your worth and being do not depend on them.
The guru gives reasons why even the bliss sheath is not the supreme Self.
When all five sheaths have been negated, by reasoning and by scripture, what remains at the limit of that negation is the witness, whose nature is awareness.

After 'I am not this body, not these moods, not these thoughts, not even these good feelings', something is still there, noticing. That simple awareness is what you are.
Having examined all five sheaths, the guru says what remains when they are set aside.
This Self, self-luminous, distinct from the five sheaths, witness of the three states, changeless, stainless, ever-blissful, is what the wise should know as their own Self.

Through waking, dreaming and sleep, through good days and bad, something in you stays the same. Knowing that steadies you more than any change in circumstances.
The guru describes the Self that is to be known: distinct from the five sheaths and witness of the three states.
Disciple: When these five sheaths have been denied as unreal, I see nothing here but the absence of everything, O guru. What thing is there left for the knower of the Self to know as the Self?
Meaning today and context
Letting go of familiar identities can feel like falling into emptiness. The disciple's fear is natural, and the teaching answers it rather than dismissing it.
The disciple voices a doubt: once all five sheaths are denied, only emptiness seems to be left.
You have spoken truly, learned one; you are skilled in inquiry. Ego and the other modifications, and this absence of them too, [are experienced by something, as the next verse says].
Meaning today and context
Even 'nothing' is noticed by someone. The awareness that sees absence is itself not absent.
The guru praises the disciple's reasoning and begins the reply that runs into the next verse.
That which shines most clearly in waking, dream and deep sleep, always pulsing within as 'I, I' in one unvarying way as the inner Self; which watches these ego-led modifications of mind that take many forms, and shines as eternal bliss and awareness: know that, in your heart, to be your own Self.
Meaning today and context
Beneath every changing thought and feeling there is the simple sense 'I am', the same in childhood and old age, in joy and in pain. Resting in that, rather than in the moods, gives a quiet steadiness.
The guru tells the disciple where to find the Self: as the ever-present 'I' shining in all three states.
Seeing the sun's image reflected in the water in a pot, the fool takes it for the sun itself. In the same way, the dull-minded person, through error, takes the reflection of consciousness lodged in the adjunct to be 'I'.
Meaning today and context
The personality that is shaped by circumstances, the one that gets hurt, praised and anxious, is like a reflection that wobbles when the water moves. The light it reflects does not wobble.
The guru gives the image of the sun reflected in a pot of water to explain how we mistake the reflected self for the real one.
Setting aside the pot, the water and the sun's image in it, one sees the sun itself, which stands apart, lights up all three and is self-luminous. As the wise see it, so [the Self is to be seen, as the next verses say].

To find what is real in yourself, look past the container (the body), the medium (the mind) and the image (the self-picture) to the light that shows them all.
The guru continues the analogy: the real sun is seen by setting aside pot, water and reflection.
In the same way, setting aside the body, the intellect and the reflection of consciousness in it, [knowing] the seer, the Self hidden in the cave of the intellect, undivided awareness, the light of all, distinct from both gross and subtle,

The body and the mind matter, but they are not the seer. Turning attention back toward what sees is the essence of self-inquiry.
The guru applies the analogy to the Self; the sentence continues through the next two verses.
eternal, all-pervading, present everywhere, extremely subtle, with no inside or outside, not other than oneself: knowing this, one's own true nature, fully, a person becomes free of sin, free of passion, free of death,
'Free of death' is about the Self, not the body. If you are thinking about death or harming yourself, please reach out now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Knowing yourself as awareness that has no edge loosens guilt, agitation and the fear of ending, because none of them touch what you most deeply are.
The guru continues the description of the Self and begins to say what one who knows it becomes.
free of sorrow, full of bliss, wise; such a person fears nothing from anywhere. For one who seeks liberation there is no other path out of the bondage of worldly existence than knowing the truth of oneself.
Inner fearlessness does not mean ignoring real danger. If you are unsafe, call 112; if fear or grief is overwhelming, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Fear grows out of feeling small, separate and threatened. The deepest fearlessness comes not from controlling everything outside, but from knowing who you are.
The guru completes the sentence: the knower of the Self is free of sorrow and fear, and there is no other way to liberation.
Knowing oneself to be not different from Brahman is the cause of liberation from worldly existence; by it the wise attain Brahman, the one without a second, bliss itself.
Meaning today and context
The feeling of being cut off, alone against the world, is at the root of much suffering. This verse says freedom comes from seeing you were never separate.
The guru states that knowing one's non-difference from Brahman is the cause of liberation.
The knower who has become Brahman does not return again to worldly existence. Therefore one's own non-difference from Brahman must be known thoroughly.

Real understanding does not wear off like a mood. Once you have truly seen something, you cannot unsee it; so it is worth understanding deeply, not superficially.
The guru adds that one who has become Brahman does not return to the cycle of births.
Brahman is truth, knowledge, infinite, pure, supreme, self-established, of the single essence of eternal bliss, not different from the inner Self, without any break: it prevails.

The guru describes Brahman, echoing the Taittiriya Upanishad phrase 'satyam jnanam anantam brahma'.

Calling the world 'unreal' or 'false' is a claim about its ultimate nature, not permission to ignore people, duties, suffering or practical needs. Relationships, work and health still deserve full care.

Non-duality is not a theory to argue about but a way of seeing in which the hard line between 'me' and 'everything else' dissolves.
The guru says the Real is non-dual because nothing exists apart from it.
This entire universe, which appears in many forms through ignorance, is all Brahman alone, once every flaw of imagining has been cast off.

The guru says that the whole varied world, seen through ignorance, is in truth Brahman.

Though a pot is an effect of clay, it is not different from clay; everywhere the pot is clay in its very nature. There is no pot separate from clay as a 'pot-form'. Why then call it a pot? It is false, a mere name that has been imagined.

Names and shapes help us live and talk, but they do not create new substances. Seeing the clay in every pot is a way of seeing the common ground under all differences.

No one can show the nature of a pot as something different from clay. Therefore the pot is only imagined, through delusion; clay alone is real, the true substance.

Try to point to the 'pot' without pointing to clay: you can't. In the same way, the text invites you to look for what is underneath all the forms that come and go.

Everything that is an effect of the Real, Brahman, is likewise only the Real; it is just that, and there is nothing other than it. Whoever says something else exists has not yet shed delusion; he is like someone talking in his sleep.

The text is blunt: seeing separation everywhere is like talking in one's sleep. The point is to wake up, not to look down on those still dreaming.
The guru applies the clay example to Brahman and the world.
'This universe is Brahman alone': so says the excellent word of scripture rooted in the Atharvaveda. Therefore this universe is only Brahman; what is superimposed is not different from its substratum.

The guru cites the Mundaka Upanishad of the Atharvaveda, 'all this universe is Brahman alone', as the authority.
If this world were real, the Self would lose its infinitude, the scriptures would cease to be authoritative, and the Lord himself would be guilty of speaking untruth. None of these three is acceptable or beneficial to the great-souled.
Calling the world 'unreal' or 'false' is a claim about its ultimate nature, not permission to ignore people, duties, suffering or practical needs. Relationships, work and health still deserve full care.

This is a reasoned argument from within the Advaita tradition. Its practical point is that our deepest identity should not be measured by the limits of the world we see.
The guru argues that if the world were real as something separate, three unacceptable consequences would follow.
If the world were real, let it be perceived in deep sleep. Since nothing at all is perceived there, it is unreal, false like a dream.
Calling the world 'unreal' or 'false' is a claim about its ultimate nature, not permission to ignore people, duties, suffering or practical needs. Relationships, work and health still deserve full care.

Every night all your worries and roles disappear in deep sleep, and you are still there. That suggests the troubles that feel absolute are not the whole of what you are.
The guru gives the argument from deep sleep: the world is not perceived there.
Therefore the world does not exist apart from the supreme Self; its appearance as separate is false, like qualities and the like [seen apart from their substance]. What reality can something superimposed have? It is the substratum that appears that way, through error.

What you see is not nothing; it is the real seen in a confused way. Clearer seeing does not remove the world, it reveals what it rests on.
The guru concludes that the world has no existence apart from the supreme Self.
Whatever a deluded person perceives through error is Brahman alone, just as the 'silver' is really mother-of-pearl. Brahman is always what is being described as 'this'; what is superimposed on Brahman is a mere name.

When we misjudge something, the thing itself was there all along; only our label was wrong. Correcting the label, not destroying the thing, is what understanding does.
The guru gives the example of mother-of-pearl mistaken for silver.
Therefore the supreme Brahman is the Real, one without a second, a mass of pure consciousness, stainless, utterly peaceful, without beginning or end, actionless, its very nature the essence of unbroken bliss,

Peace in this teaching is not something to manufacture; it is described as the nature of reality itself, waiting to be recognised.
The guru begins a hymn-like description of the supreme Brahman, continued in the next verse.
in which all distinctions made by maya are removed, eternal, happiness itself, without parts, beyond measure, formless, unmanifest, nameless, imperishable, a self-luminous light: this indescribable something shines.

Words run out here. The verse ends simply with 'something shines', pointing to what is present but cannot be pinned down by a name or form.
The wise know the supreme truth as free of knower, known and knowledge, infinite, beyond all concepts, pure undivided consciousness alone.

In moments of deep absorption, in music, nature or quiet, the sense of 'me seeing something' falls away. The verse points to that wholeness as the truth itself.
The guru says how the wise know the highest truth: beyond the split of knower, known and knowing.
Not to be rejected, not to be taken up, beyond the reach of mind and speech, beyond measure, without beginning or end: Brahman, the Whole, the 'I', the radiance.

What you most deeply are cannot be gained or lost. You don't need to acquire it, and nothing can take it away; that is a ground of real security.
The guru describes Brahman as neither to be rejected nor acquired, and identifies it with the 'I'.
When Brahman and the Self, which are named by the words 'that' and 'you', are purified in this way, the scripture, through 'that you are', teaches again and again their complete oneness.

The saying 'you are that' is not flattery of the ego. It asks you to look past what you usually take yourself to be, and past what you imagine God to be, to find what is common to both.
The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, begins explaining the great saying 'tat tvam asi' (that you are) to the disciple.
Their oneness is declared of what the words point to, not of their literal meanings; for literally they have opposite qualities, like a firefly and the sun, a servant and a king, a well and the ocean, an atom and Mount Meru.

The small, limited person you think you are is obviously not the infinite. The teaching is not that your ego is God, but that beneath both the limited and the vast there is one awareness.
The guru explains that the oneness taught by 'that you are' applies to what the words point to, not to their literal meanings, which contradict each other.
This opposition between them is created by their limiting adjuncts; it is not real at all. The adjunct of the Lord is māyā, the cause of mahat and the rest; that of the individual soul is its effect, the five sheaths. Listen.

What makes you feel separate and small is the 'packaging' of body and mind, not what you essentially are. Seeing this can loosen the feeling of being only a limited, isolated self.
The guru says the contradiction between God and the individual comes only from their limiting adjuncts (upādhis): māyā for God, the five sheaths for the individual.
etāvupādhī parajīvayostayoḥ | samyaṅnirāse na paro na jīvaḥ | rājyaṃ narendrasya bhaṭasya kheṭas | tayorapohe na bhaṭo na rājā ||
These two are the adjuncts of the Supreme and of the individual. When both are fully set aside, there is neither Supreme nor individual. The kingdom makes the king, the shield makes the soldier; take both away and there is neither soldier nor king.

Many of our identities, boss or employee, rich or poor, are roles given by circumstances. Remove the role, and the person remains. The verse points to that person beneath every role.
The guru gives an image: remove the adjuncts and the distinction between God and individual vanishes, as king and soldier lose their identities without kingdom and shield.
The scripture itself, with 'now therefore the teaching', denies the duality imagined in Brahman. Through understanding supported by the authority of scripture, the two adjuncts must certainly be set aside.

Some truths are found not by adding more ideas but by removing what is false. Clearing away mistaken labels is itself a path to clarity.
The guru cites the Upanishadic instruction 'now therefore the teaching' (followed by 'not this, not this') as the scripture's own denial of duality in Brahman.
'Not this, not this': because it is imagined it is not real, like the snake seen in a rope, or like a dream. Setting aside everything seen in this way by sound reasoning, one should then know the single reality that underlies both.
Calling the world 'not real' is a teaching about identity, not a reason to neglect your body, family, work or medical care.

Thoughts, feelings and circumstances come and go; you are aware of all of them. Saying 'not this' to each passing state can show you a steadier sense of self that is not ruled by moods.
The guru teaches the method of 'not this, not this': whatever is seen is imagined, like a snake seen in a rope or a dream, and must be set aside.
tatastu tau lakṣaṇayā sulakṣyau | tayorakhaṇḍaikarasatvasiddhaye | nālaṃ jahatyā na tathājahatyā | kintūbhayārthātmikayaiva bhāvyam ||
So the two must be well understood through implied meaning, to establish their partless, single essence. Neither the implication that drops the literal sense, nor the one that keeps it, is enough; it must be the one that keeps part of both meanings.

Deep sayings are not read word for word or thrown away; you keep what is essential and drop what does not fit. That careful reading applies to scripture and to life.
The guru explains, in the technical language of interpretation, which kind of implied meaning (lakṣaṇā) is used to read 'that you are'.
Just as in 'this is that Devadatta' the identity is stated by setting aside the conflicting parts (then and now, there and here), so in the sentence 'that you are', the conflicting qualities on both sides are set aside.

The guru gives the classic example: in 'this is that Devadatta', the person is the same though place and time differ.
Pointing to Brahman and the Self as pure consciousness alone, the wise come to know their undivided nature. In this way, through hundreds of great sayings, the oneness of Brahman and the Self, their undivided being, is declared.

The common ground between you and everything is awareness itself. That simple fact, repeated in many scriptures, can be checked in your own experience.
The guru concludes the analysis: the wise recognise the partless unity of Brahman and Self as pure consciousness, as the great sayings declare.
By 'not gross' and similar words, the scripture rejects the unreal; what remains is self-established, like space, beyond reasoning. Therefore this perceived world is mere appearance. Give up what you have taken to be yourself, and with a purified understanding, 'I am Brahman', know your own Self as undivided awareness.

The guru tells the disciple to reject what is falsely taken as the Self and to know himself as Brahman, undivided awareness.
