Introduction (Prastāvikā)

Pr.1 Narayana

siddhiḥ sādhye satāmastu prasādāttasya dhūrjaṭeḥ | jāhnavī-phena-lekheva yan-mūrdhni śaśinaḥ kalā ||

May the good find success in what they set out to do, by the grace of Dhurjati (Shiva), on whose head the crescent moon shines like a streak of foam of the Ganga.

Meaning today and context

Before any serious work, the author pauses to wish success to all good people, not just himself. Beginning with goodwill and a moment of reverence is an old and healthy habit.

The opening blessing of the Hitopadesha: the author Narayana invokes Shiva before beginning the book.

Pr.2 Narayana

śruto hitopadeśo'yaṃ pāṭavaṃ saṃskṛtoktiṣu | vācāṃ sarvatra vaicitryaṃ nīti-vidyāṃ dadāti ca ||

This Hitopadesha, when heard, gives skill in polished Sanskrit expression, variety of speech on every subject, and the knowledge of niti, wise conduct in the world.

Meaning today and context

The book promises two things together: the ability to speak well and the judgment to act well. Good stories teach both at once.

Narayana describes what the book offers to those who hear it.

Pr.3 Narayana

ajarāmaravatprājño vidyāmarthaṃ ca cintayet | gṛhīta iva keśeṣu mṛtyunā dharmamācaret ||

A wise person should think about learning and wealth as if he would never age or die; but he should practise dharma as if Death already had him by the hair.

Meaning today and context

Learning and building a livelihood are long projects: keep at them patiently, as if you had all the time in the world. But doing the right thing cannot wait for later; kindness, honesty and duty should be done today.

In the opening praise of learning, Narayana gives a famous rule for how to hold learning, wealth and dharma.

Pr.4 Narayana

sarva-dravyeṣu vidyaiva dravyamāhuranuttamam | ahāryatvādanarghatvādakṣayatvācca sarvadā ||

Of all possessions, they say learning alone is the finest wealth, because it can never be stolen, cannot be priced, and never runs out.

Meaning today and context

Money, property and status can be lost overnight; what you have truly learned stays with you wherever you go. Time and money spent on real learning are rarely wasted.

Narayana's praise of learning: why knowledge is the best possession.

Pr.5 Narayana

saṃyojayati vidyaiva nīcagāpi naraṃ sarit | samudramiva durgharṣaṃ nṛpaṃ bhāgyamataḥ param ||

Learning alone brings a man, even of low standing, close to a king who is hard to approach, as a river, though it flows along low ground, reaches the ocean. Good fortune follows from that.

Meaning today and context

Wherever you start from, skill and knowledge open doors that birth and connections do not. Learning comes first; the lucky breaks tend to follow it.

Narayana's praise of learning: what learning makes possible for a person of humble standing.

Pr.6 Narayana

vidyā dadāti vinayaṃ vinayādyāti pātratām | pātratvāddhanamāpnoti dhanāddharmaṃ tataḥ sukham ||

Learning gives humility; through humility one becomes worthy; through worthiness one gains wealth; from wealth comes dharma, and from that, happiness.

Meaning today and context

Real learning should make you more humble, not more arrogant, and that humility is what makes people trust you with responsibility. Earnings that come this way can be used well, and that is where lasting happiness lies.

Narayana's praise of learning: the famous chain that leads from learning to happiness.

Pr.7 Narayana

vidyā śastraṃ ca śāstraṃ ca dve vidye pratipattaye | ādyā hāsyāya vṛddhatve dvitīyādriyate sadā ||

Learning in arms and learning in the shastras are both means to success; but the first becomes a laughing-stock in old age, while the second is honoured always.

Meaning today and context

Skills that rest on youth and physical strength fade with age; understanding and knowledge grow more valuable. It is wise to build something of the second kind alongside the first.

Narayana's praise of learning: comparing skill with weapons and learning of the scriptures.

Pr.8 Narayana

yannave bhājane lagnaḥ saṃskāro nānyathā bhavet | kathā-cchalena bālānāṃ nītistadiha kathyate ||

Because an impression set in a new clay pot does not change afterwards, nīti is taught here to the young in the guise of stories.

Meaning today and context

What children absorb early stays with them, and they absorb it best through stories rather than lectures. Parents and teachers can pass on values through good stories told well.

Narayana explains why he teaches nīti to young princes through stories.

Pr.9 Narayana

mitra-lābhaḥ suhṛd-bhedo vigrahaḥ sandhireva ca | pañca-tantrāttathānyasmādgranthādākṛṣya likhyate ||

Winning Friends, Separating Friends, War, and Peace: these are written here, drawn from the Panchatantra and from another work.

Meaning today and context

The book is openly built on older stories; its four parts cover making allies, how friendships are broken, conflict, and making peace.

Narayana names the four books of the Hitopadesha and his sources.

Pr.10 Narayana

aneka-saṃśayocchedi parokṣārthasya darśakam | sarvasya locanaṃ śāstraṃ yasya nāstyandha eva saḥ ||

Learning (shastra) cuts through many doubts and shows what is beyond sight; it is everyone's eye. One who does not have it is truly blind.

Meaning today and context

Knowledge lets you see consequences and possibilities that are not in front of you yet. Without it you move through life guessing, however sharp your eyes.

The frame story begins: King Sudarshana of Pataliputra hears someone reciting two verses; this is the first.

Pr.11 Narayana

yauvanaṃ dhana-sampattiḥ prabhutvamavivekitā | ekaikamapyanarthāya kimu yatra catuṣṭayam ||

Youth, the possession of wealth, power, and lack of discernment: each one alone leads to ruin. What then where all four are together?

Meaning today and context

Being young, rich and powerful is not a problem in itself; it becomes dangerous when there is no judgment to steer it. Anyone who suddenly gets money or authority, especially young, needs good sense and good advice most.

The second verse King Sudarshana overhears; it makes him think of his own idle, untaught sons.

Pr.12 Narayana

ko'rthaḥ putreṇa jātena yo na vidvānna dhārmikaḥ | kāṇena cakṣuṣā kiṃ vā cakṣuḥ pīḍaiva kevalam ||

What use is a son who is born but is neither learned nor righteous? What use is a blind eye? It only gives pain.

A father's lament, not a measure of a child's worth. Never use it to shame a child or student over marks or failure; a child who feels worthless needs support. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is a worried father speaking: what parents most want for a child is understanding and good character, more than anything else. The verse is a reason to take a child's education and values seriously, not a judgment on any child's worth.

Troubled by his sons, who have learned nothing and keep going astray, King Sudarshana reflects to himself.

Pr.13 Narayana

ajāta-mṛta-mūrkhāṇāṃ varamādyau na cāntimaḥ | sakṛdduḥkha-karāvādyāvantimastu pade pade ||

Of a son unborn, a son who died, and a son who is a fool, the first two are better, not the last: the first two cause grief once, the last at every step.

Never quote this to bereaved parents or about any child. Every child's life is precious; the verse is a king's exaggerated lament. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

These are the words of a frustrated father in a story, speaking in exaggeration. They show how deeply a parent can worry, not how anyone should regard a child.

King Sudarshana, despairing over his untaught sons, continues his bitter reflection.

Pr.14 Narayana

varaṃ garbha-srāvo varamapi ca naivābhigamanaṃ | varaṃ jātaḥ preto varamapi ca kanyāvajanitā | varaṃ bandhyā bhāryā varamapi ca garbheṣu vasatir | na vāvidvānrūpa-draviṇa-guṇa-yukto'pi tanayaḥ ||

Better a miscarriage, better no union at all, better a child dead at birth, better that a daughter be born, better a barren wife, better to stay in the womb, than a son without learning, even one gifted with looks, wealth and good qualities.

Reflects the prejudices of its time (daughters as lesser, childless women as unfortunate); this is not the app's view. Never use it to demean daughters, women, childless couples or any child, or to speak to someone who has lost a pregnancy or a baby. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A king's bitter exaggeration in the story, ranking every loss below an ignorant son. It reflects the attitudes of its time, including the low value placed on daughters, and is not advice.

King Sudarshana continues lamenting his untaught sons.

Pr.15 Narayana

He alone is truly born by whose birth his family rises higher. In this turning world of birth and death, who that has died is not born again?

Meaning today and context

Being born is common to everyone; what makes a life count is what it adds to the people around it. Lifting up your family and community, in whatever way you can, gives a life its meaning.

King Sudarshana, reflecting on his sons, says what makes a birth truly worthwhile.

Pr.16 Narayana

guṇi-gaṇa-gaṇanā'rambhe | na patati kaṭhinī sa-sambhramādyasya | tenāmbā yadi sutinī | vada bandhyā kīdṛśī bhavati ? ||

When the good are being counted, if the chalk does not fall eagerly on a son's name to mark him first, and yet his mother is called blessed with a son, tell me, what then is a barren woman?

Never use this to shame a child, a mother, or a woman without children. Worth is not a ranking. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A rhetorical jab from a disappointed father in the story: a son who is never counted among the able is as good as no son. It reflects the pressures of its time rather than offering advice.

King Sudarshana continues his lament over sons without merit.

Pr.17 Narayana

dāne tapasi śaurye ca yasya na prathitaṃ manaḥ | vidyāyāmartha-lābhe ca māturuccāra eva saḥ ||

One whose mind has made no mark in giving, in austerity, in courage, in learning, or in earning a living, is nothing but his mother's excrement.

Never use this insult on anyone, least of all a child or someone who feels they have achieved nothing. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Behind the crude insult is a list of fields where a person can make a mark: generosity, discipline, courage, learning, and honest earning. The insult itself belongs to the angry father in the story.

King Sudarshana's lament continues, in harsh terms.

Pr.18 Narayana

varameko guṇī putro na ca mūrkha-śatairapi | ekaścandrastamo hanti na ca tārā-gaṇairapi ||

Better one son with good qualities than a hundred fools: the one moon dispels the darkness, which the hosts of stars cannot.

Meaning today and context

Quality counts for more than quantity, in a team, in friends, in effort. One capable, good-hearted person can do what a crowd cannot.

King Sudarshana, thinking of his sons, quotes a saying on worth over numbers.

Pr.19 Narayana

puṇya-tīrthe kṛtaṃ yena tapaḥ kvāpyatiduṣkaram | tasya putro bhavedvaśyaḥ samṛddho dhārmikaḥ sudhīḥ ||

One who has performed some very hard austerity at a holy place of pilgrimage will have a son who is obedient, prosperous, righteous and wise.

Not a judgment on parents whose children struggle; a child's difficulties are not proof of the parents' sin.

Meaning today and context

The king sees a good child as a blessing earned by past merit. Today it can be read as gratitude: good children are a gift, and their goodness also grows from the care and example of the home.

King Sudarshana reflects that a good son comes as the fruit of past merit.

Pr.20 Narayana

arthāgamo nityamarogitā ca priyā ca bhāryā priya-vādinī ca | vaśyaśca putro'rtha-karī ca vidyā ṣaḍjīva-lokasya sukhāni rājan ||

A steady income, good health, a loving wife who speaks kindly, a son who listens, and learning that brings a livelihood: these, O king, are the six joys of the world of the living.

Meaning today and context

Ordinary happiness is plain: enough income, health, a warm relationship, a family that gets along, and useful skills. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is worth protecting.

King Sudarshana recalls a saying listing the joys of household life, among them a son who listens.

Pr.21 Narayana

ko dhanyo bahubhiḥ putraiḥ kuśūlāpūraṇāḍhakaiḥ | varamekaḥ kulālambī yatra viśrūyate pitā ||

Who is blessed by many sons, mere measures for filling the grain-bin? Better one who upholds the family, through whom the father becomes renowned.

Meaning today and context

Numbers are not achievement: one child, one employee, one effort that truly carries responsibility is worth more than many that only consume. It is a call to be the kind of person others can lean on.

King Sudarshana reflects that one worthy son counts for more than many.

Pr.22 Narayana

ṛṇa-kartā pitā śatrurmātā ca vyabhicāriṇī | bhāryā rūpavatī śatruḥ putraḥ śatrurapaṇḍitaḥ ||

A father who runs up debts is an enemy; so is an unfaithful mother; a beautiful wife is an enemy; and a son without learning is an enemy.

The lines about mothers and beautiful wives reflect the prejudices of their time, are not the app's view, and must never be used to demean, distrust or control women. Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Part of this still holds: a parent who leaves the family buried in debt, or a child left uneducated, can harm a household for years. The lines about women reflect the suspicions of the time.

King Sudarshana recalls a saying about family members who become enemies.

Pr.23 Narayana

yasya kasya prasūto'pi guṇavānpūjyate naraḥ | dhanurvaṃśa-viśuddho'pi nirguṇaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ||

A person of good qualities is honoured, no matter whose child he is. A bow made of the finest bamboo, if it has no string, what can it do?

Worth comes from conduct and ability, never from birth or caste.

Meaning today and context

Family name and background count for little without ability and character; with them, anyone from anywhere earns respect. (The Sanskrit plays on vamsha, both 'bamboo' and 'lineage', and guna, both 'bowstring' and 'virtue'.)

King Sudarshana recalls a saying: worth comes from qualities, not from family.

Pr.24 Narayana

hā hā putraka nādhītaṃ gatāsvetāsu rātriṣu | tena tvaṃ viduṣāṃ madhye paṅke gauriva sīdasi ||

Alas, alas, my boy, you did not study through all those nights now gone; and so among the learned you sink like a cow stuck in the mud.

Meaning today and context

Time not used for learning shows up later, in the moments when you need what you did not learn. The verse is a nudge to use the time you have now, not a reason to despair over time already lost.

King Sudarshana imagines the regret of a son who wasted his youth without study.

Pr.25 Narayana

āhāra-nidrā-bhaya-maithunāni sāmānyametatpaśubhirnarāṇām | jñānaṃ narāṇāmadhiko viśeṣo jñānena hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ ||

Eating, sleeping, fear and mating are common to humans and animals. Knowledge is what sets humans apart; without knowledge they are no different from animals.

Meaning today and context

Our basic drives are shared with every creature; what is distinctly human is the ability to understand, reflect and choose. A life spent only on comfort, sleep and appetite leaves that ability unused.

King Sudarshana asks himself how his sons can be made worthy, and recalls what sets humans apart.

Pr.26 Narayana

dharmārtha-kāma-mokṣāṇāṃ yasyaiko'pi na vidyate | ajāgala-stanasyeva tasya janma nirarthakam ||

One who has not even one of dharma, wealth, pleasure and liberation: his birth is as useless as the teats on a goat's neck.

Meaning today and context

The four aims of life are doing right, earning, enjoying, and seeking freedom. A life is meant to pursue at least one of them with purpose rather than drift.

King Sudarshana continues: a life that pursues none of the four aims is wasted.

Pr.27 Narayana

āyuḥ karma ca vittaṃ ca vidyā nidhanameva ca | pañcaitāni hi sṛjyante garbhasthasyaiva dehinaḥ ||

Lifespan, deeds, wealth, learning and death: these five are fixed for an embodied being while he is still in the womb.

Meaning today and context

This is the voice of fatalism, stated so it can be answered: the text goes on to call such talk the excuse of those who will not act. Some things are beyond our control, but learning and effort are not among the things we can hand over to fate.

King Sudarshana raises the fatalist objection: perhaps a person's lot is fixed from the womb, so teaching cannot help. The following verses answer it.

Pr.28 Narayana

avaśyaṃ bhāvino bhāvā bhavanti mahatāmapi | nagnatvaṃ nīlakaṇṭhasya mahāhi-śayanaṃ hareḥ ||

What is bound to happen happens even to the great: see the nakedness of blue-throated Shiva, and Vishnu lying on the great serpent.

Meaning today and context

Some hardships come even to the most capable people, and that is no disgrace. The text raises this view only to go on to insist that it is no excuse for giving up effort.

Continuing the fatalist objection, King Sudarshana recalls that even the gods cannot escape what must happen.

Pr.29 Narayana

yadabhāvi na tadbhāvi bhāvi cenna tadanyathā | iti cintā-viṣa-ghno'yamagadaḥ kiṃ na pīyate ||

What is not to be will not be; and if it is to be, it will not be otherwise. This is an antidote that kills the poison of worry; why not drink it?

The text itself calls this the excuse of the idle (next line of the prose); it is not a reason to stop studying, working or seeking treatment.

Meaning today and context

Accepting that some outcomes are out of our hands can calm useless worry. But the Hitopadesha itself warns that this thought turns into laziness if used to skip the work; do your part, then let go of the outcome.

The last line of the fatalist view King Sudarshana considers; the text immediately calls it the talk of those unwilling to act.

Pr.30 Narayana

yathā hyekena cakreṇa na rathasya gatirbhavet | tathā puruṣakāreṇa vinā daivaṃ na siddhyati ||

Just as a chariot cannot move on one wheel, so fate does not succeed without human effort.

Meaning today and context

Luck and effort are two wheels of the same cart; waiting for one without the other gets you nowhere. Whatever your circumstances, your effort is the wheel you control.

Answering the fatalist view, the text declares the superiority of human effort.

Pr.31 Narayana

pūrva-janma-kṛtaṃ karma taddaivamiti kathyate | tasmātpuruṣakāreṇa yatnaṃ kuryādatandritaḥ ||

What is called fate is only the deeds done in a former life. Therefore one should strive with one's own effort, tirelessly.

Meaning today and context

Fate is not a separate power working against you; it is the result of past actions. That means present actions shape what comes next, so keep working without giving in to weariness.

na daivamapi saṃcintya tyajedudyogamātmanaḥ | anudyogena tailāni tilebhyo nāptumarhati ||

Even thinking of fate, one should not give up one's own effort. Without effort, no one can get oil from sesame seeds.

Meaning today and context

The oil is in the seeds, but it only comes out by pressing them. Your potential is real, but it only shows through work.

udyoginaṃ puruṣa-siṃhamupaiti lakṣmīr | daivena deyamiti kāpuruṣā vadanti | daivaṃ nihatya kuru pauruṣamātma-śaktyā | yatne kṛte yadi na sidhyati ko'tra doṣaḥ ||

Fortune comes to the lion among men who strives; it is cowards who say 'fate will give'. Set fate aside and act like a man, with all your strength; if, having made the effort, you still do not succeed, where is the fault in that?

Meaning today and context

Success usually goes to those who act, not those who wait. And the last line matters as much: if you have truly done your best and still fail, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Continuing the case for effort over fate, with one of the Hitopadesha's best-known verses.

Pr.34 Narayana

yathā mṛt-piṇḍataḥ kartā kurute yadyadicchati | evamātma-kṛtaṃ karma mānavaḥ pratipadyate ||

As a potter makes from a lump of clay whatever he wishes, so a person receives the results of the deeds he himself has done.

Meaning today and context

You are less a prisoner of fate than a potter at the wheel: the shape your life takes depends largely on what you keep doing. That is both a responsibility and a hope.

kākatālīyavatprāptaṃ dṛṣṭvāpi nidhimagrataḥ | na svayaṃ daivamādatte puruṣārthamapekṣate ||

Even when a treasure has fallen in front of you by sheer chance, as the palm fruit fell when the crow landed, fate does not pick it up for you: it still needs your effort.

Meaning today and context

Even luck has to be grabbed. Opportunities that fall in your lap are wasted unless you notice them and act.

Tasks are accomplished by effort, not by wishes. Deer do not walk into the mouth of a sleeping lion.

Meaning today and context

Planning and dreaming feel productive, but nothing happens until you start. Even someone strong and gifted has to get up and do the work.

The closing verse of the case for effort over fate, among the best known in the book.

Pr.37 Narayana

mātā śatruḥ pitā vairī yena bālo na pāṭhitaḥ | na śobhate sabhā-madhye haṃsa-madhye bako yathā ||

A mother is an enemy and a father a foe if they do not have their child taught. Such a child does not shine in an assembly, like a heron among swans.

Not a condemnation of parents who could not afford schooling, or of anyone who missed an education; it is never too late to learn.

Meaning today and context

Giving a child a good education is one of a parent's first duties; neglecting it can hurt the child more than any enemy could. The strong words are a call to responsibility.

King Sudarshana, returning to the duty of educating his sons, recalls a saying about parents.

Pr.38 Narayana

rūpa-yauvana-sampannā viśāla-kula-sambhavāḥ | vidyā-hīnā na śobhante nirgandhā iva kiṃśukāḥ ||

Though gifted with beauty and youth and born in a great family, those without learning do not shine, like kimshuka flowers that have no scent.

Meaning today and context

Looks, youth and family background catch the eye but do not hold respect for long. What you know and how you think are what make you worth listening to.

King Sudarshana continues reflecting on why his sons must be educated.

Pr.39 Narayana

pustakeṣu ca nādhītaṃ nādhītaṃ guru-sannidhau | na śobhate sabhā-madhye jāra-garbha iva striyāḥ ||

One who has not studied from books nor learned at a teacher's side does not shine in an assembly, like a woman's child by a lover.

The simile reflects the prejudices of its time; it is not the app's view and must never be used to demean women or children born outside marriage.

Meaning today and context

The point is that real learning needs both study and a teacher. The simile reflects the social stigma of its time and is not part of the teaching.

King Sudarshana recalls another saying on the disgrace of an unlearned person.

Pr.40 Narayana

kācaḥ kāñcana-saṃsargāddhatte mārakatīrdyutīḥ | tathā sat-sannidhānena mūrkho yāti pravīṇatām ||

Glass placed beside gold takes on the gleam of emerald; so too, by keeping company with the good, a fool becomes skilled.

Meaning today and context

We absorb the qualities of the people we spend time with. Placing yourself, or a child, near capable and good people is one of the surest ways to grow.

King Sudarshana calls an assembly of scholars and asks whether anyone can give his wayward sons a new birth through teaching nīti, explaining why company matters.

Pr.41 Narayana

hīyate hi matistāta hīnaiḥ saha samāgamāt | samaiśca samatāmeti viśiṣṭaiśca viśiṣṭatām ||

The mind declines, my dear, through mixing with lesser people; with equals it stays equal, and with the excellent it becomes excellent.

Meaning today and context

Your thinking rises or sinks to the level of those around you. If you want to grow, spend time with people who stretch you, not only those who keep you comfortable.

King Sudarshana, addressing the assembly of scholars, quotes a saying on the power of company.

Pr.42 Narayana

nādravye nihitā kācitkriyā phalavatī bhavet | na vyāpāra-śatenāpi śukavatpāṭhyate bakaḥ ||

No effort spent on unfit material bears fruit: not with a hundred attempts can a heron be taught to talk like a parrot.

Not a licence to write off any child or learner as unteachable; it is about matching teaching to the person.

Meaning today and context

Teaching works best when it suits the learner's nature and readiness. A good teacher, manager or parent looks for what a person is actually suited to, instead of forcing one mould on everyone.

The great scholar Vishnusharman answers the king that these princes, born of a noble family, can be taught; he adds that teaching works only on fit material.

Pr.43 Narayana

asmiṃstu nirguṇaṃ gotre nāpatyamupajāyate | ākare padma-rāgānāṃ janma kāca-maṇeḥ kutaḥ ||

In this family no worthless child is born: how could a glass bead arise in a mine of rubies?

Worth is by conduct and ability, never by birth or family line.

Meaning today and context

A teacher's encouraging words to an anxious father: believe your children have it in them. Read today, it is about confidence in a learner, not about superior bloodlines.

Vishnusharman assures King Sudarshana that his sons, born in a noble line, are fit to be taught.

Pr.44 Narayana

kīṭo'pi sumanaḥ-saṅgādārohati satāṃ śiraḥ | aśmāpi yāti devatvaṃ mahadbhiḥ supratiṣṭhitaḥ ||

Even an insect, by keeping company with flowers, rises onto the heads of the good; even a stone becomes a god when consecrated by the great.

Meaning today and context

Whatever you start as, being in the right company and under the right guidance can raise you far. A good mentor's trust can turn an ordinary person into someone respected.

Vishnusharman promises to make the princes masters of nīti within six months; King Sudarshana humbly replies on the power of good company.

Pr.45 Narayana

yathodaya-girerdravyaṃ sannikarṣeṇa dīpyate | tathā sat-sannidhānena hīna-varṇo'pi dīpyate ||

As anything on the sunrise mountain shines by its nearness to the sun, so through closeness to the good even one of humble rank shines.

'Humble rank' (hina-varna) refers to standing, never a judgment by birth or caste; worth is by conduct.

Meaning today and context

Being near people of good character lets their light fall on you, whatever your starting point. Seek out such people; and if you are one, let others come close.

King Sudarshana continues, to Vishnusharman, on the power of good company.

Pr.46 Narayana

guṇā guṇajñeṣu guṇā bhavanti | te nirguṇaṃ prāpya bhavanti doṣāḥ | āsvādya-toyāḥ pravahanti nadyaḥ | samudramāsādya bhavantyapeyāḥ ||

Virtues are virtues among those who know their worth; reaching someone without worth, they turn into faults. Rivers flow with sweet water, but on reaching the sea they become undrinkable.

Meaning today and context

Where your abilities are appreciated, they grow; in the wrong setting the same qualities can be misread or wasted. Choose teachers, teams and workplaces that know the value of what you bring.

King Sudarshana's last words before entrusting his sons to Vishnusharman: qualities flourish only where they are valued.
