Verses 451–500

1.451 Guru to Disciple

jñānodayātpurārabdhaṃ karmajñānānna naśyati | adatvā svaphalaṃ lakṣyamuddiśyotsṛṣṭabāṇavat ||

Karma that began before knowledge arose is not destroyed by knowledge without yielding its fruit, like an arrow released at a target.

Meaning today and context

Some consequences are already in motion and must play out. Wisdom does not always stop them; it changes how we meet them.

The guru: karma that had already begun to bear fruit before knowledge dawned is not destroyed by knowledge, like an arrow already shot.

1.452 Guru to Disciple

vyāghrabuddhyā vinirmukto bāṇaḥ paścāttu gomatau | na tiṣṭhati chinatyeva lakṣyaṃ vegena nirbharam ||

An arrow released in the belief that the target is a tiger does not stop when one later sees it is a cow; it strikes the target with full force.

Meaning today and context

Some actions taken in confusion cannot be called back once understanding comes. That is a reason for care before acting, and for patience with what follows.

The guru completes the arrow simile: an arrow shot at what was thought to be a tiger does not stop when one realises it is a cow.

1.453 Guru to Disciple

prārabdhaṃ balavattaraṃ khalu vidāṃ bhogena tasya kṣayaḥ | samyagjñānahutāśanena vilayaḥ prāksaṃcitāgāminām | brahmātmaikyamavekṣya tanmayatayā ye sarvadā saṃsthitāḥ | teṣāṃ tattritayaṃ nahi kvacidapi brahmaiva te nirguṇam ||

Prārabdha is indeed very strong for the knowers; it ends only by being lived through. Stored and future karma are destroyed in the fire of right knowledge. But for those who, seeing the oneness of Brahman and Self, always abide absorbed in it, none of the three exists anywhere: they are the attributeless Brahman itself.

Meaning today and context

Some of what happens to us must simply be lived through; some can be released by changed understanding. Knowing which is which saves a great deal of struggle.

The guru summarises the three kinds of karma: prārabdha is spent by experiencing it; stored and future karma are burnt by knowledge; and for those fully established in Brahman, none of the three exists.

1.454 Guru to Disciple

upādhitādātmyavihīnakevala- | brahmātmanaivātmani tiṣṭhato muneḥ | prārabdhasadbhāvakathā na yuktā | svapnārthasaṃbandhakatheva jāgrataḥ ||

For the sage who abides in the Self as Brahman alone, free of identification with adjuncts, talk of prārabdha still existing makes no sense, just as talk of a connection with dream objects makes no sense for one who is awake.

Meaning today and context

From the deepest standpoint, the stories of 'my fate' and 'my karma' belong to a self that has been seen through. This is the summit of the teaching, not a rule for daily decisions.

The guru goes further: for the sage resting in the Self as Brahman alone, free from identification with adjuncts, even talk of prārabdha is out of place.

1.455 Guru to Disciple

na hi prabuddhaḥ pratibhāsadehe | dehopayoginyapi ca prapañce | karotyahantāṃ mamatāmidantāṃ | kintu svayaṃ tiṣṭhati jāgareṇa ||

One who has woken up does not take 'I', 'mine' or 'this' towards the dream body, or towards the dream world that served that body; he simply remains himself, awake.

Meaning today and context

When you outgrow a role or a phase of life, you no longer defend it as yourself. Waking up spiritually is like that with the whole sense of ego.

The guru continues the waking analogy: one who has woken does not claim the dream body or dream world as 'I', 'mine' or 'this'.

1.456 Guru to Disciple

na tasya mithyārthasamarthanecchā | na saṃgrahastajjagato'pi dṛṣṭaḥ | tatrānuvṛttiryadi cenmṛṣārthe | na nidrayā mukta itīṣyate dhruvam ||

He has no wish to uphold the unreal objects, nor is he seen to cling to that world. If he still went along with the false objects, he would certainly not be considered free from sleep.

Meaning today and context

If we keep chasing and defending what we say we have seen through, we have not really seen through it yet. Clinging is the honest measure.

The guru: the waker has no wish to prove the dream objects real, nor does he hold on to that world; if he still followed the false objects, he would not be called free from sleep.

1.457 Guru to Disciple

tadvatpare brahmaṇi vartamānaḥ | sadātmanā tiṣṭhati nānyadīkṣate | smṛtiryathā svapnavilokitārthe | tathā vidaḥ prāśanamocanādau ||

Just so, one who dwells in the supreme Brahman remains as Being itself and sees nothing else. As there is memory of things seen in a dream, so is the knower's relation to eating, excreting and the like.

Meaning today and context

The body's ordinary needs continue for everyone, even the wise. What changes is that they no longer define who one is.

The guru applies the analogy: the knower abides as Being in Brahman and sees nothing else; his eating and other bodily acts are like a faint memory of a dream.

1.458 Guru to Disciple

karmaṇā nirmito dehaḥ prārabdhaṃ tasya kalpyatām | nānāderātmano yuktaṃ naivātmā karmanirmitaḥ ||

The body is formed by karma; let prārabdha be ascribed to it. It is not fitting for the beginningless Self, for the Self is not made by karma.

Meaning today and context

Your circumstances, body and history were shaped by causes; you, the one aware of them, were not. That distinction can give dignity in hard conditions.

The guru: the body is made by karma, so prārabdha may be ascribed to it, but not to the beginningless Self, which is not made by karma.

1.459 Guru to Disciple

ajo nityaḥ śāśvata iti brūte śrutiramoghavāk | tadātmanā tiṣṭhato'sya kutaḥ prārabdhakalpanā ||

The Śruti, whose word never fails, declares the Self unborn, eternal, everlasting. For one who abides as that Self, how can prārabdha be imagined?

Meaning today and context

What you are at the deepest level was never born and will not die. Resting in that, the anxieties of fate lose their grip.

The guru cites scripture: the Self is unborn, eternal, everlasting; for one abiding as that, how can prārabdha be imagined?

1.460 Guru to Disciple

prārabdhaṃ sidhyati tadā yadā dehātmanā sthitiḥ | dehātmabhāvo naiveṣṭaḥ prārabdhaṃ tyajyatāmataḥ ||

Prārabdha holds only while one lives identified with the body. Identification with the body is not desirable; therefore let prārabdha be given up.

Meaning today and context

Much talk of 'my destiny' rests on assuming we are only the body. Questioning that assumption is the first step out of fatalism.

The guru: prārabdha holds only while one identifies with the body; that identification is not accepted, so give up the idea of prārabdha.

1.461 Guru to Disciple

śarīrasyāpi prārabdhakalpanā bhrāntireva hi | adhyastasya kutaḥ sattvamasatyasya kuto janiḥ | ajātasya kuto nāśaḥ prārabdhamasataḥ kutaḥ ||

Even attributing prārabdha to the body is only delusion. How can what is superimposed be real? How can the unreal be born? How can the unborn perish? How can there be prārabdha for what is not?

This is a non-dual teaching about identity. It is not a reason to neglect the body, health, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

This is the most radical step: from the highest view, even the body's story is appearance. It invites one to hold life lightly, not to stop caring for it.

The guru: even assigning prārabdha to the body is error, for the body is superimposed and unreal; what is unreal is not born, and the unborn does not perish.

1.462 Guru to Disciple

jñānenājñānakāryasya samūlasya layo yadi | tiṣṭhatyayaṃ kathaṃ deha iti śaṅkāvato jaḍān ||

'If knowledge destroys the effects of ignorance together with their root, how does this body continue to stand?' To answer such dull-minded doubters,

Meaning today and context

It is a fair question why a wise person still has a body, illness and needs. The answer that follows speaks to different levels of seeing.

The guru raises the doubt of the unwise: if knowledge destroys ignorance and all its effects at the root, how does the knower's body go on living?

1.463 Guru to Disciple

samādhātuṃ bāhyadṛṣṭyā prārabdhaṃ vadati śrutiḥ | na tu dehādisatyatvabodhanāya vipaścitām ||

the Śruti speaks of prārabdha from the outside point of view, to satisfy them, not to teach the wise that the body and the rest are real.

Meaning today and context

Teachings often speak at more than one level. 'Karma' and 'fate' are a practical explanation for everyday life; the deeper teaching points beyond them.

The guru completes the thought: scripture speaks of prārabdha from the outside view, to satisfy such doubters, not to teach the wise that the body is real.

1.464 Guru to Disciple

paripūrṇamanādyantamaprameyamavikriyam | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

Full, without beginning or end, beyond all measure, unchanging: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

Beneath all the changing variety of life, this teaching points to one whole that lacks nothing. Remembering it can steady a mind scattered among many things.

The guru begins a run of verses with the refrain 'Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here at all'.

1.465 Guru to Disciple

sadghanaṃ cidghanaṃ nityamānandaghanamakriyam | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

Pure being through and through, pure awareness through and through, eternal, bliss through and through, actionless: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

Being, awareness and joy are not things to acquire from outside; the teaching says they are what we are made of. Search turns inward.

The guru continues the refrain, describing Brahman as dense with being, awareness and joy.

1.466 Guru to Disciple

pratyagekarasaṃ pūrṇamanantaṃ sarvatomukham | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

The inmost Self, of a single essence, full, endless, present everywhere: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

What you are deepest within is the same everywhere. That can ease the feeling of being small and separate.

The guru continues the refrain: Brahman is the inner Self, of one essence, full, endless, facing every direction.

1.467 Guru to Disciple

aheyamanupādeyamanādeyamanāśrayam | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

Not to be rejected, not to be taken up, not to be grasped, resting on nothing: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

Your true nature is not something you can gain or lose. That can end the anxious chase to become someone.

The guru continues the refrain: Brahman cannot be rejected or taken up, needs no support.

1.468 Guru to Disciple

nirguṇaṃ niṣkalaṃ sūkṣmaṃ nirvikalpaṃ nirañjanam | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

Without attributes, without parts, subtle, beyond all distinctions, stainless: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

The deepest reality is untouched by every label. Whatever you have been called, it does not reach what you are.

The guru continues the refrain: Brahman is without qualities, without parts, subtle, free of distinctions, stainless.

1.469 Guru to Disciple

anirūpya svarūpaṃ yanmanovācāmagocaram | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

That whose nature cannot be defined, beyond the reach of mind and speech: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

Some things cannot be explained, only lived into. Not having words for the deepest truth is not failure; it is the nature of it.

The guru continues the refrain: Brahman's nature cannot be defined; it is beyond mind and speech.

1.470 Guru to Disciple

satsamṛddhaṃ svataḥsiddhaṃ śuddhaṃ buddhamanīdṛśam | ekamevādvayaṃ brahma neha nānāsti kiṃcana ||

Rich in being, self-established, pure, awake, without equal: Brahman is one only, without a second; there is no diversity here whatsoever.

Meaning today and context

What is self-established needs no proof or approval from outside. Seeing yourself that way loosens the need for validation.

The guru ends the refrain: Brahman is full of being, self-established, pure, awake, beyond comparison.

1.471 Guru to Disciple

nirastarāgā vinirastabhogāḥ | śāntāḥ sudāntā yatayo mahāntaḥ | vijñāya tattvaṃ parametadante | prāptāḥ parāṃ nirvṛtimātmayogāt ||

Great renunciants, rid of passion, having cast off enjoyments, calm and well restrained, have known this supreme truth and at the end attained supreme fulfilment through union with the Self.

Renunciation here means inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities.

Meaning today and context

Others have walked this path and found peace. Calm, self-restraint and freedom from clinging are not just ideals; they are steps people have actually taken.

The guru points to those who have gone before: dispassionate, calm, self-controlled renunciants who reached supreme peace by knowing this truth.

1.472 Guru to Disciple

bhavānapīdaṃ paratattvamātmanaḥ | svarūpamānandaghanaṃ vicārya | vidhūya mohaṃ svamanaḥprakalpitaṃ | muktaḥ kṛtārtho bhavatu prabuddhaḥ ||

You too, reflecting on this supreme truth, your own nature, dense with bliss, shake off the delusion your own mind has created, and be free, fulfilled, awake.

Meaning today and context

Much of what binds us is a story our own mind has built. The invitation is personal: look into who you are, and let that story go.

The guru turns to the disciple directly: you too, reflecting on your own blissful nature, shake off delusion and be free.

1.473 Guru to Disciple

samādhinā sādhuviniścalātmanā | paśyātmatattvaṃ sphuṭabodhacakṣuṣā | niḥsaṃśayaṃ samyagavekṣitaścec | chrutaḥ padārtho na punarvikalpyate ||

Through samādhi, with a mind made perfectly still, see the truth of the Self with the clear eye of understanding. If what has been heard is truly seen, beyond doubt, it is never again called into question.

Intensive meditation can bring up distressing experiences. If you have trauma, psychosis or severe depression, practise under guidance; Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Hearing a truth is not the same as seeing it for yourself. When a still mind sees it directly, doubts stop circling back.

The guru: in samādhi, with a steady mind and clear eye of understanding, see the truth of the Self; once seen without doubt, what was heard is never doubted again.

1.474 Guru to Disciple

In freeing oneself from bondage to one's own ignorance, and in realising the Self whose nature is truth, knowledge and bliss, scripture, reasoning and the teacher's words are the means of knowledge; and one's own experience, established within, is also a means of knowledge.

Learn from texts, think it through, listen to a good teacher, and then test it in your own experience. All four matter; none alone is enough.

The guru names the means of knowing one's freedom: scripture, reasoning and the teacher's word are proof, and inner self-experience is proof too.

bandho mokṣaśca tṛptiśca cintārogyakṣudhādayaḥ | svenaiva vedyā yajjñānaṃ pareṣāmānumānikam ||

Bondage and liberation, contentment, anxiety, health, hunger and the like are to be known by oneself alone; others' knowledge of them is only inference.

Meaning today and context

No one else can feel your hunger or your peace for you. In the end, whether you are free or bound is something you must know firsthand.

The guru: bondage, freedom, contentment, worry, health and hunger are known only by oneself; others can only infer them.

taṭasthitā bodhayanti guravaḥ śrutayo yathā | prajñayaiva taredvidvānīśvarānugṛhītayā ||

Teachers and scriptures teach as if standing on the bank. The wise one must cross by insight alone, insight blessed by the grace of the Lord.

Meaning today and context

Teachers can point the way, but nobody can swim the river for you. Your own understanding, with grace, is what carries you across.

The guru: teachers and scriptures guide from the outside; the wise must cross by their own insight, blessed by God's grace.

Meaning today and context

After understanding comes abiding: returning again and again to what you have seen, until it is the ground you live from.

The guru: knowing one's own undivided Self by direct experience, the perfected one should stay facing it, resting in the Self free of mental constructs.

This is the clear statement of the Vedānta's conclusion: the individual self and the whole world are Brahman alone; liberation is abiding as the undivided; and for Brahman without a second, the Śrutis are the proof.

Meaning today and context

In one line: you and the world are not separate from the one reality, and freedom is living from that wholeness rather than from a sense of being a fragment.

The guru states the conclusion of Vedānta: the individual and the whole world are Brahman; liberation is abiding in the undivided; scripture is the proof.

Thus, through the guru's words and the authority of scripture, and by his own reasoning, he came to know the supreme truth; his senses stilled, his mind collected, he became motionless in form at some spot, established in the Self.

Meaning today and context

Teaching, scripture and one's own reflection together lead to stillness. The disciple shows what it looks like when understanding settles.

The narrator (the text, attributed to Shankaracharya) describes the disciple: hearing the guru, he realises the truth and becomes absorbed and motionless in the Self. The canonical speaker 'Guru' should be the narrator.

Deep stillness is followed by return to ordinary life and speech. Realisation is not cut off from the world; it comes back to share what it has found.

Meaning today and context

There is a kind of peace that comes not from figuring everything out but from the mind's constant sorting and striving falling quiet. The verse points to that, honestly admitting it cannot be measured.

The disciple, risen from absorption, describes his realisation to the guru: with the oneness of Brahman and Self known, the busy, grasping mind has fallen away.

The image is of something small and separate dissolving into what it was always made of. For a person today it suggests that the anxious, separate 'me' is not the whole story, and that letting it soften is not a loss.

The world does not literally vanish; what falls away is seeing it as a separate, solid thing standing against oneself. Even a glimpse of this can loosen the grip that events and objects have on us.

Meaning today and context

So much of life is spent pushing some things away and grabbing at others. The verse describes a fullness in which that tug-of-war ends; even a little of it makes us less driven by craving and aversion.

Meaning today and context

This is not a call to shut down the senses but a description of absorption, where there is no 'other' to perceive. In ordinary life it hints that our worth does not depend on what we see, hear or get.

The disciple, risen from absorption, describes his realisation to the guru: he sees, hears and knows nothing other than the Self, and stands apart as ever-blissful Self.

Salutations, salutations to you, great-souled guru, free from all attachment, the best of the good, whose very nature is the essence of eternal, non-dual bliss, the infinite one, ever a boundless ocean of compassion.

Praise of the guru is not a reason to give unquestioning obedience, money or control to anyone who claims to be one. A true teacher, as this verse says, is free of attachment and full of compassion.

Many of us feel we are never 'done', always one achievement away from being enough. The verse speaks of a completeness that is not earned by the next goal but recognised; it can ease that endless sense of lack.

I am not the doer; I am not the enjoyer; I am changeless and actionless. My nature is pure awareness; I am alone and absolute, ever auspicious.

'Not the doer' is about the Self, not an excuse for one's actions. We remain responsible for what we do and for its effect on others.

Meaning today and context

Much stress comes from feeling we are the sole author of every outcome. Seeing oneself as the awareness in which action happens can lighten that weight, while we still act and take responsibility.

The disciple continues his declaration: he is not the doer or enjoyer but pure awareness.

Meaning today and context

The roles we play, as speaker, worker, consumer, are functions, not our deepest identity. Seeing this can help when we are hurt by criticism of what we said or did: the awareness behind it is untouched.

Meaning today and context

Whatever you can point to, near ('this') or far ('that'), is something you are aware of, not the awareness itself. This simple turn of attention is the root of many meditation practices.

The disciple says he is neither 'this' nor 'that' but the pure light that reveals both.

Beyond compare, the beginningless reality, far from imaginings such as 'you', 'I', 'this' and 'that', of the single taste of eternal bliss, true: I am Brahman alone, without a second.

Meaning today and context

Many conflicts rest on a hard line between 'me' and 'you'. The verse says that line belongs to how the mind divides things, not to what we most deeply are; holding that loosely can soften rivalry and resentment.

The disciple declares he is Brahman, beyond the imagined divisions of 'you', 'I', 'this' and 'that'.

I am Narayana, the slayer of Naraka; I am the destroyer of the three cities (Shiva); I am the Person, the Lord. I am unbroken awareness, the witness of all; I have no lord over me, and I am without 'I' and without 'mine'.

This verse is about dropping the ego, not inflating it. Anyone who uses 'I am God' to demand worship, obedience or money is misusing it.

Meaning today and context

The striking point is the last line: this 'I' that is everything has no ego and no sense of 'mine'. It is not self-inflation but the dropping of the small self, which is what makes such a claim possible.

The disciple identifies himself with the forms of God (Narayana, Shiva) and with the witness of all, free of 'I' and 'mine'.

It is I alone who abide in all beings, as awareness, the support within and without. The enjoyer and the enjoyed, all of it, is I myself: whatever I formerly saw as separate, as 'this'.

Meaning today and context

If the same awareness lives in every being, then harming another is in a real sense harming oneself. This is the root of compassion in the Advaita view.

The disciple says he dwells in all beings as awareness, and that everything he once saw as separate is himself.

mayyakhaṇḍasukhāmbhodhau bahudhā viśvavīcayaḥ | utpadyante vilīyante māyāmārutavibhramāt ||

In me, the ocean of unbroken bliss, the waves of the universe rise in many forms and sink again, through the turbulence of the wind of maya.

Meaning today and context

Events, thoughts and feelings rise and fall like waves; the depth beneath is not disturbed by them. This image helps in meditation and in hard times: the surface may be rough while the depth stays still.

The disciple uses the image of an ocean: worlds rise and fall in him like waves stirred by the wind of maya.

sthulādibhāvā mayi kalpitā bhramād | āropitānusphuraṇena lokaiḥ | kāle yathā kalpakavatsarāya- | ṇartvādayo niṣkalanirvikalpe ||

The gross and other states are imagined in me through error, by people projecting them and then seeing them appear, just as aeons, years, half-years, seasons and the like are imagined in time, which is itself without parts and without divisions.

Meaning today and context

We cut time into years and seasons for convenience, but time itself flows unbroken. Likewise the labels we stick on ourselves, fat, thin, young, old, are useful descriptions, not the Self.

The disciple explains that the gross and other states are imagined on him by error, as divisions of time are imagined on undivided time.

āropitaṃ nāśrayadūṣakaṃ bhavet | kadāpi mūḍhairatidoṣadūṣitaiḥ | nārdrīkarotyūṣarabhūmibhāgaṃ | marīcikāvāri mahāpravāhaḥ ||

What is superimposed can never taint its ground, even when deluded people, full of faults, impose it. The great flood of a mirage does not moisten even a patch of the salt desert.

Meaning today and context

Labels others put on us, or that we put on ourselves in bad moments, do not change what we are, any more than a mirage wets the sand. This can help with harsh self-judgement, while still owning real mistakes.

The disciple says what is wrongly superimposed never stains its ground, as a mirage flood never wets the desert.

ākāśavallepavidūrago'haṃ | ādityavadbhāsyavilakṣaṇo'ham | ahāryavannityaviniścalo'haṃ | ambhodhivatpāravivarjito'ham ||

Like space, I am far beyond all taint. Like the sun, I am distinct from what I illumine. Like a mountain, I am ever unmoving. Like the ocean, I have no farther shore.

Meaning today and context

These four images make a simple daily reminder: untouched like the sky, clear like the sun, steady like a mountain, vast like the sea. They can be used as a short contemplation when shaken.

The disciple describes himself through four similes: sky, sun, mountain and ocean.

na me dehena saṃbandho megheneva vihāyasaḥ | ataḥ kuto me taddharmā jāgratsvapnasuṣuptayaḥ ||

I have no connection with the body, as the sky has none with a cloud. How then could its states, waking, dream and deep sleep, belong to me?

This describes identity, not the body's needs. It is not a reason to neglect your health, family, work or any treatment.

Meaning today and context

Clouds pass through the sky without marking it. Tiredness, sleep and bad days pass through us in a similar way; we need not take each state as the measure of who we are.

The disciple says he has no real tie to the body, so waking, dreaming and deep sleep are not his.
