Verses 501–550

1.501 Disciple to Guru

upādhirāyāti sa eva gacchati | sa eva karmāṇi karoti bhuṅkte | sa eva jīryanmriyate sadāhaṃ | kulādrivanniścala eva saṃsthitaḥ ||

The adjunct comes, and it alone goes. It alone performs actions and enjoys their fruits. It alone grows old and dies. I remain ever unmoving, like a great mountain.

When someone is grieving, ill or thinking about death, this verse is about the Self, not an invitation to give up on life or care. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Ageing and death belong to the body, not to the awareness that knows them. For someone facing illness or age, this can bring some steadiness alongside, not instead of, good care.

The disciple says the body-mind adjunct comes, goes, acts, ages and dies, while he stays unmoving like a great mountain.

1.502 Disciple to Guru

na me pravṛttirna ca me nivṛttiḥ | sadaikarūpasya niraṃśakasya | ekātmako yo niviḍo nirantaro | vyomeva pūrṇaḥ sa kathaṃ nu ceṣṭate ||

There is no engaging in action for me, nor withdrawing from it, for I am ever of one form and without parts. How could that which is one, dense, unbroken and full like space make any movement?

Meaning today and context

Even the effort to renounce is still activity. The verse points beyond both doing and not-doing, to a stillness that is present whether we are busy or at rest.

The disciple says that the Self, partless and full like space, neither engages in action nor withdraws from it.

1.503 Disciple to Guru

puṇyāni pāpāni nirindriyasya | niścetaso nirvikṛternirākṛteḥ | kuto mamākhaṇḍasukhānubhūteḥ | brūte hyananvāgatamityapi śrutiḥ ||

How can merits and sins belong to me, who am without senses, without mind, without change, without form, the experience of unbroken bliss? The scripture too says 'untouched' (ananvāgata).

This is not a licence to disregard right and wrong. One who truly knows the Self is described as free of the ego that drives harmful action; we remain answerable for how we treat others.

Meaning today and context

Guilt can make us feel stained to the core. The verse says the deepest Self is never stained; this can open the way to repair and change, rather than despair. It does not cancel the consequences of what we do.

The disciple says merit and sin cannot touch the Self, which has no senses, mind or form, and cites the Upanishad's word 'untouched'.

1.504 Disciple to Guru

chāyayā spṛṣṭamuṣṇaṃ vā śītaṃ vā suṣṭhu duḥṣṭhu vā | na spṛśatyeva yatkiṃcitpuruṣaṃ tadvilakṣaṇam ||

Whatever touches the shadow, hot or cold, good or bad, does not touch in the least the person, who is distinct from it.

Meaning today and context

Praise and blame, comfort and discomfort fall on the 'shadow' of our roles and body. Remembering this can reduce how deeply they wound or inflate us.

The disciple compares the body to a shadow: whatever touches the shadow does not touch the person who casts it.

1.505 Disciple to Guru

na sākṣiṇaṃ sākṣyadharmāḥ saṃspṛśanti vilakṣaṇam | avikāramudāsīnaṃ gṛhadharmāḥ pradīpavat ||

The qualities of what is witnessed do not touch the witness, which is distinct from them, changeless and uninvolved, just as the affairs of a house do not touch the lamp that lights it.

Meaning today and context

A lamp lights up a quarrel and a celebration alike without becoming either. Learning to watch our anger, fear or sadness in this way, without being swept into them, is a practical skill.

The disciple, describing his realisation to the guru, says the witness is untouched by what it witnesses, as a lamp is untouched by what happens in a house.

1.506 Disciple to Guru

raveryathā karmaṇi sākṣibhāvo | vahneryathā dāhaniyāmakatvam | rajjoryathāropitavastusaṅgaḥ | tathaiva kūṭasthacidātmano me ||

As the sun is a witness to action, as fire governs burning, as a rope is connected with the thing superimposed on it, just so am I, the unchanging conscious Self.

Meaning today and context

The sun makes all activity possible without doing it; the rope 'is' the snake only in our mistake. Our awareness makes life possible in the same way without being caught by it.

The disciple gives three similes for the Self's relation to the world: the sun as witness, fire as what makes burning possible, the rope under the imagined snake.

1.507 Disciple to Guru

kartāpi vā kārayitāpi nāhaṃ | bhoktāpi vā bhojayitāpi nāham | draṣṭāpi vā darśayitāpi nāhaṃ | so'haṃ svayaṃjyotiranīdṛgātmā ||

I am neither the doer nor the one who makes others act; neither the enjoyer nor the one who makes others enjoy; neither the seer nor the one who makes others see. I am that Self, self-luminous, beyond description.

Not being 'the doer' at the level of the Self does not remove responsibility for one's actions or for those one leads.

Meaning today and context

Beyond every role, doing, enjoying, seeing, and even directing others, there is the plain light of awareness. Resting in that can ease the pressure of always having to manage everything and everyone.

The disciple says he is neither doer nor one who makes others act, neither enjoyer nor seer, but the self-luminous Self.

1.508 Disciple to Guru

calatyupādhau pratibimbalaulyam | aupādhikaṃ mūḍhadhiyo nayanti | svabimbabhūtaṃ ravivadviniṣkriyaṃ | kartāsmi bhoktāsmi hato'smi heti ||

When the adjunct moves, the reflection trembles; deluded minds attribute this borrowed movement to their own original, which is actionless like the sun, and say: 'I am the doer, I am the enjoyer, alas, I am destroyed!'

If you feel 'I am finished' and cannot see a way out, please talk to someone now: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When the mind is agitated, everything, including our sense of self, seems to shake. The verse says the shaking belongs to the 'water', the mind, not to us; let the water settle before concluding 'I am ruined'.

The disciple explains the error of the deluded with the image of the sun reflected in moving water.

1.509 Disciple to Guru

jale vāpi sthale vāpi luṭhatveṣa jaḍātmakaḥ | nāhaṃ vilipye taddharmairghaṭadharmairnabho yathā ||

Let this inert body roll about in water or on dry land; I am not stained by its qualities, just as space is not stained by the qualities of a pot.

Never read this as permission to neglect or harm the body. The teaching is about identity, not self-contempt; if you are struggling with self-harm or low self-worth, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

This is the voice of one who no longer identifies with the body, not an instruction to treat it carelessly. For us it can mean not letting the body's condition decide our worth.

The disciple, in the language of complete detachment from the body, says the body may lie anywhere but its states do not stain him.

1.510 Disciple to Guru

kartṛtvabhoktṛtvakhalatvamattatā- | jaḍatvabaddhatvavimuktatādayaḥ | buddhervikalpā na tu santi vastutaḥ | svasminpare brahmaṇi kevale'dvaye ||

Being a doer, an enjoyer, wicked, intoxicated, dull, bound or freed: these are only the intellect's imaginings. They do not really exist in the supreme Brahman, my own Self, which is alone and non-dual.

Meaning today and context

Even 'I am bad' or 'I am bound' are ideas the mind holds about itself. Seeing them as ideas, not as final truths, makes change possible.

The disciple says doership, wickedness, bondage, even liberation, are notions of the intellect, not realities in Brahman.

1.511 Disciple to Guru

santu vikārāḥ prakṛterdaśadhā śatadhā sahasradhā vāpi | kiṃ me'saṅgacitastairna ghanaḥ kvacidambaraṃ spṛśati ||

Let nature's changes be tenfold, a hundredfold, even a thousandfold. What are they to me, whose awareness is unattached? A cloud never touches the sky.

Meaning today and context

Life will keep changing, sometimes in many directions at once. The image of clouds passing through an untouched sky is a useful anchor in times of upheaval.

The disciple says nature's changes may be countless, but they cannot touch unattached awareness, as clouds never touch the sky.

1.512 Disciple to Guru

avyaktādisthūlaparyantametat | viśvaṃ yatrābhāsamātraṃ pratītam | vyomaprakhyaṃ sūkṣmamādyantahīnaṃ | brahmādvaitaṃ yattadevāhamasmi ||

That in which this whole universe, from the unmanifest down to the gross, appears as mere appearance; which is like space, subtle, without beginning or end; that non-dual Brahman, that alone am I.

Meaning today and context

Everything we experience appears within awareness, as images appear on a screen. The verse invites a shift from identifying with the images to recognising the screen.

The disciple affirms: I am that non-dual Brahman in which the whole universe, from the unmanifest to the gross, appears as mere appearance.

1.513 Disciple to Guru

sarvādhāraṃ sarvavastuprakāśaṃ | sarvākāraṃ sarvagaṃ sarvaśūnyam | nityaṃ śuddhaṃ niścalaṃ nirvikalpaṃ | brahmādvaitaṃ yattadevāhamasmi ||

The support of all, the light that reveals all things, taking every form, all-pervading yet empty of all, eternal, pure, unmoving, beyond all division: that non-dual Brahman, that alone am I.

Meaning today and context

Awareness holds everything yet is not any one thing; it is full and empty at once. Contemplating this can loosen the habit of defining oneself by possessions or circumstances.

The disciple continues the refrain: I am that non-dual Brahman, the support and light of all.

1.514 Disciple to Guru

yatpratyastāśeṣamāyāviśeṣaṃ | pratyagrūpaṃ pratyayāgamyamānam | satyajñānānantamānandarūpaṃ | brahmādvaitaṃ yattadevāhamasmi ||

That in which every trace of maya has been cast off, the inmost Self, reached by inner knowing, truth, knowledge, infinite, of the nature of bliss: that non-dual Brahman, that alone am I.

Meaning today and context

The phrase 'truth, knowledge, infinite' comes from the Upanishads. The verse says this is not far away but our own inmost being, found by turning attention inward.

The disciple ends the refrain: I am that non-dual Brahman, free of maya, the inner Self, truth, knowledge and infinity.

1.515 Disciple to Guru

niṣkriyo'smyavikāro'smi | niṣkalo'smi nirākṛtiḥ | nirvikalpo'smi nityo'smi | nirālambo'smi nirdvayaḥ ||

I am actionless, I am changeless; I am partless, formless. I am beyond all division, I am eternal; I am without support, without a second.

Meaning today and context

A short verse often used for repetition and contemplation. 'Without support' means the Self does not lean on anything else to exist, unlike our moods, which depend on circumstances.

The disciple lists what he is: actionless, changeless, partless, formless, eternal, without support, without a second.

1.516 Disciple to Guru

sarvātmako'haṃ sarvo'haṃ sarvātīto'hamadvayaḥ | kevalākhaṇḍabodho'hamānando'haṃ nirantaraḥ ||

I am the Self of all; I am all; I am beyond all, without a second. I am awareness alone, unbroken; I am bliss, without interruption.

Meaning today and context

To be 'all' and 'beyond all' at once is the heart of non-duality: one with everything, attached to nothing. It points to belonging without clinging.

The disciple says he is the Self of all, all, and beyond all; unbroken awareness and bliss.

svārājyasāmrājyavibhūtireṣā | bhavatkṛpāśrīmahimaprasādāt | prāptā mayā śrīgurave mahātmane | namo namaste'stu punarnamo'stu ||

This splendour of self-sovereignty and of empire has been won by me through the grace of your glorious compassion. To you, revered and great-souled guru, salutations, salutations, and salutations again.

Meaning today and context

Real freedom here is mastery over oneself, not over others. The disciple credits his teacher, a reminder that inner growth is rarely achieved alone.

The disciple thanks the guru again: this sovereignty over himself was gained by the guru's grace.

Wandering in the great dream, the dense forest of birth, old age and death made by maya, tormented day after day by countless pains, and mauled by the tiger of ego, I was awakened by you, O guru, out of deep sleep and saved, out of your boundless compassion.

Meaning today and context

The 'tiger of ego' is a vivid picture of how pride, hurt and self-concern can savage our days. Help from someone wiser can be like waking from a bad dream.

The disciple tells the guru how he was lost in the great dream of birth, ageing and death, mauled by the tiger of ego, until the guru woke him.

namastasmai sadaikasmai kasmaicinmahase namaḥ | yadetadviśvarūpeṇa rājate gururāja te ||

Salutations to that One, ever one, to that indescribable radiance, salutations; to you, king of gurus, which shines forth as this whole universe.

Meaning today and context

Seeing the teacher, and the whole world, as expressions of one reality turns gratitude into reverence for everything.

The disciple ends his praise, bowing to the guru as the one radiance that shines as the whole universe.

1.520 Shankaracharya

iti natamavalokya śiṣyavaryaṃ | samadhigatātmasukhaṃ prabuddhatattvam | pramuditahṛdayaṃ sa deśikendraḥ | punaridamāha vacaḥ paraṃ mahātmā ||

Seeing that excellent disciple bowing before him, having attained the joy of the Self and awakened to the truth, his heart full of delight, that great-souled lord of teachers spoke again these supreme words.

Meaning today and context

A teacher's joy in a student's understanding is part of this story; the teaching does not end with realisation but continues with how to live it.

The narrator (the text attributed to Shankaracharya) describes the guru, pleased to see the disciple awakened and bowing, beginning his final instructions.

brahmapratyayasantatirjagadato brahmaiva tatsarvataḥ | paśyādhyātmadṛśā praśāntamanasā sarvāsvavasthāsvapi | rūpādanyadavekṣitaṃ kimabhitaścakṣuṣmatāṃ dṛśyate | tadvadbrahmavidaḥ sataḥ kimaparaṃ buddhervihārāspadam ||

The world is a continuous stream of cognitions of Brahman; therefore it is Brahman in every respect. See this with inward vision and a peaceful mind, in every state. For those with eyes, what is seen all around but form? Likewise, for the knower of Brahman, what is there other than the Real for the intellect to dwell on?

Meaning today and context

The guru does not tell the disciple to escape the world but to see it differently: as the same reality appearing in many forms. That way of seeing can make ordinary life feel sacred.

The guru begins his final instructions: the world is a stream of cognitions of Brahman, so see Brahman everywhere with a calm mind.

1.522 Guru to Disciple

kastāṃ parānandarasānubhūti- | mṛtsṛjya śūnyeṣu rameta vidvān | candre mahāhlādini dīpyamāne | citrendumālokayituṃ ka icchet ||

What wise person would give up that experience of supreme bliss and delight in empty things? When the moon shines, giving great joy, who would wish to look at a painted moon?

Meaning today and context

Once we have known a deeper joy, shallow pleasures lose their pull on their own, without forcing. The path is to find what truly satisfies, not just to suppress desire.

The guru asks who, having tasted the bliss of the Self, would delight in empty things, as no one would gaze at a painted moon when the real one shines.

1.523 Guru to Disciple

asatpadārthānubhavena kiṃcin | na hyasti tṛptirna ca duḥkhahāniḥ | tadadvayānandarasānubhūtyā | tṛptaḥ sukhaṃ tiṣṭha sadātmaniṣṭhayā ||

From experiencing unreal things there is no satisfaction at all, nor any end of sorrow. So, satisfied by experiencing that non-dual bliss, live happily, ever established in the Self.

Meaning today and context

The endless chase for more, more things, more approval, more experiences, never quite fills us. Contentment grows from what is already within, not from the next purchase.

The guru tells the disciple that unreal things never satisfy or end sorrow; be content in the bliss of the Self.

1.524 Guru to Disciple

svameva sarvathā paśyanmanyamānaḥ svamadvayam | svānandamanubhuñjānaḥ kālaṃ naya mahāmate ||

Seeing only your own Self in every way, knowing your Self to be non-dual, enjoying the bliss of your own Self, pass your time, O great-minded one.

Meaning today and context

This is a picture of a life lived with inner contentment, not restless seeking. For us it can mean spending some part of each day simply resting in awareness.

The guru advises the disciple to spend his time seeing the Self everywhere and enjoying its bliss.

1.525 Guru to Disciple

akhaṇḍabodhātmani nirvikalpe | vikalpanaṃ vyomni puraprakalpanam | tadadvayānandamayātmanā sadā | śāntiṃ parāmetya bhajasva maunam ||

In the Self, which is unbroken awareness beyond all division, imagining distinctions is like imagining a city in the sky. So, as the Self of non-dual bliss, reach supreme peace and abide always in silence.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering is built from stories in the mind, castles in the air. Inner silence means not feeding those stories, not withdrawing from people.

The guru says imagining divisions in undivided awareness is like imagining a city in the sky; rest in peace and silence.

1.526 Guru to Disciple

tūṣṇīmavasthā paramopaśāntiḥ | buddherasatkalpavikalpahetoḥ | brahmātmano brahmavido mahātmano | yatrādvayānandasukhaṃ nirantaram ||

The state of silence is the supreme quietening of the intellect, which is the cause of unreal imaginings and fancies. In it the great soul who knows Brahman, being Brahman, enjoys the joy of non-dual bliss without a break.

Meaning today and context

The mind keeps generating 'what if' and 'if only'. Silence here is not just closed lips but the settling of that inner chatter, which even a little meditation can begin to bring.

The guru praises the state of silence as the supreme stilling of the intellect, where the knower of Brahman enjoys unbroken bliss.

1.527 Guru to Disciple

nāsti nirvāsanānmaunātparaṃ sukhakṛduttamam | vijñātātmasvarūpasya svānandarasapāyinaḥ ||

For one who has known the true nature of the Self and drinks the nectar of the Self's own bliss, there is nothing higher, nothing that gives better joy, than silence free of desires.

Meaning today and context

Silence 'free of desires' is the key: quiet that is not tense waiting for the next want. We can taste it in moments when we want nothing and are simply present.

The guru says that for one who knows the Self, nothing gives greater joy than silence free of desires.

1.528 Guru to Disciple

gacchaṃstiṣṭhannupaviśañchayāno vānyathāpi vā | yathecchayā vasedvidvānātmārāmaḥ sadā muniḥ ||

Walking, standing, sitting, lying down, or in any other way, the wise sage, ever delighting in the Self, may live as he pleases.

'As he pleases' describes one free of selfish desire; it is not a licence to ignore duties, rules or the needs of others.

Meaning today and context

Realisation is not tied to a posture, place or ritual; it can be present in every ordinary activity. For us, awareness can be practised while walking, working or resting, not only on a meditation cushion.

The guru describes the free knower: walking, standing, sitting or lying down, he lives as he pleases, delighting in the Self.

1.529 Guru to Disciple

na deśakālāsanadigyamādi- | lakṣyādyapekṣāpratibaddhavṛtteḥ | saṃsiddhatattvasya mahātmano'sti | svavedane kā niyamādyavasthā ||

For the great soul who has fully realised the truth, whose life is no longer tied to place, time, posture, direction, rules of restraint, objects of meditation and the like, what rule or condition can there be for knowing his own Self?

Meaning today and context

Practices and routines are aids for the seeker. What they point to, one's own awareness, is present everywhere and does not wait for the right room or hour.

The guru tells the disciple that for one who has realised the truth, knowing the Self depends on no outer conditions such as place, time or posture.

1.530 Guru to Disciple

ghaṭo'yamiti vijñātuṃ niyamaḥ ko'nvavekṣate | vinā pramāṇasuṣṭhutvaṃ yasminsati padārthadhīḥ ||

To know 'this is a pot', what rule does anyone look for, beyond a sound means of knowing? When that is present, knowledge of the object arises.

Meaning today and context

Some knowing is simple and direct. Self-knowledge, once the obstacles are cleared, is like that: not a ritual to perform but a fact to see.

The guru gives an analogy: knowing an ordinary object needs only a sound means of knowledge, not any special rule.

1.531 Guru to Disciple

ayamātmā nityasiddhaḥ pramāṇe sati bhāsate | na deśaṃ nāpi vā kālaṃ na śuddhiṃ vāpyapekṣate ||

This Self is ever established. It shines forth when the means of knowledge is present, and it depends neither on place, nor on time, nor on purification.

Meaning today and context

What you truly are is not something to be produced or earned. It is already here; understanding only uncovers it.

The guru applies the analogy: the Self is ever present and shines as soon as the right means of knowing is there.

1.532 Guru to Disciple

devadatto'hamityetadvijñānaṃ nirapekṣakam | tadvadbrahmavido'pyasya brahmāhamiti vedanam ||

The knowledge 'I am Devadatta' depends on nothing else. In the same way, for the knower of Brahman, the knowledge 'I am Brahman' stands on its own.

Meaning today and context

You don't need to remind yourself of your own name. The aim of self-inquiry is a sense of who you are that is just as natural and needs no constant effort to hold.

The guru compares the knower's 'I am Brahman' to the everyday, effortless knowledge of one's own name.

1.533 Guru to Disciple

bhānuneva jagatsarvaṃ bhāsate yasya tejasā | anātmakamasattucchaṃ kiṃ nu tasyāvabhāsakam ||

He by whose light, as by the sun, the whole world shines: what could possibly illumine him, when the not-Self is unreal and of no substance?

Meaning today and context

Awareness is what lets you see everything else; it is never one more object in front of you. Looking for it the way you look for things is why it seems hard to find.

The guru says the Self is the light by which everything is known, so nothing can illumine it in turn.

1.534 Guru to Disciple

vedaśāstrapurāṇāni bhūtāni sakalānyapi | yenārthavanti taṃ kinnu vijñātāraṃ prakāśayet ||

The Vedas, the scriptures, the Puranas and all beings have meaning only because of him. What then could reveal that knower?

Meaning today and context

Books and teachers point; the one who understands is you. Without awareness nothing would mean anything at all.

The guru adds that even scripture gets its meaning from the knower, the Self.

1.535 Guru to Disciple

eṣa svayaṃjyotiranantaśaktiḥ | ātmāprameyaḥ sakalānubhūtiḥ | yameva vijñāya vimuktabandho | jayatyayaṃ brahmaviduttamottamaḥ ||

This Self is self-luminous, of infinite power, beyond all measure, the experience within all experiences. Knowing it alone, freed from bondage, this best among the knowers of Brahman triumphs.

Meaning today and context

The awareness at the centre of every experience needs no outside proof. Recognising it is the real victory, deeper than any outward success.

The guru sums up the Self's nature and the triumph of one who knows it.

1.536 Guru to Disciple

na khidyate no viṣayaiḥ pramodate | na sajjate nāpi virajyate ca | svasminsadā krīḍati nandati svayaṃ | nirantarānandarasena tṛptaḥ ||

He is not troubled, nor thrilled by objects; he neither clings nor turns away in aversion. He plays always in himself, rejoices in himself, fulfilled by the unbroken taste of bliss.

Meaning today and context

A happiness that does not swing with what we get or lose is possible. Even a little of this steadiness frees us from being pushed around by every desire and dislike.

The guru describes the inner state of the liberated one.

1.537 Guru to Disciple

kṣudhāṃ dehavyathāṃ tyaktvā bālaḥ krīḍati vastuniḥ | tathaiva vidvānramate nirmamo nirahaṃ sukhī ||

As a child plays with his toys, forgetting hunger and bodily aches, so the wise one delights, free of 'mine', free of 'I', happy.

Meaning today and context

Much of our heaviness comes from 'I' and 'mine'. When that grip loosens, life can be met with a child's lightness, without losing responsibility.

The guru compares the knower's carefree joy to a child absorbed in play.

1.538 Guru to Disciple

Their food is alms, taken without worry or humiliation; their drink is river water; they live free and unrestrained; they sleep without fear in cremation grounds or forests; their clothing needs no washing or drying, or the directions are their clothes; the earth is their bed; they walk the avenues of Vedanta; their play is in the supreme Brahman.

This describes the free life of a renunciate sage. It is not advice to leave home, family, work or care of one's health; for most people it points to inner freedom from worry.

Meaning today and context

The picture is of a life with no anxiety about having. Most of us will keep our homes and work, but we can borrow the fearlessness and lightness it describes.

The guru describes the outward life of wandering renunciate knowers.

vimānamālambya śarīrametad | bhunaktyaśeṣānviṣayānupasthitān | parecchayā bālavadātmavettā | yo'vyaktaliṅgo'nanuṣaktabāhyaḥ ||

Riding this body as if it were a carriage, the knower of the Self experiences whatever objects come to him, by the will of others, like a child; his marks are hidden, and he is untouched by outer things.

Meaning today and context

We can take what life brings, pleasant or plain, without building our identity on it. The body is something we use and care for, not the whole of who we are.

The guru says the knower uses the body as a vehicle, meeting what comes without attachment.

digambaro vāpi ca sāmbaro vā | tvagambaro vāpi cidambarasthaḥ | unmattavadvāpi ca bālavadvā | piśācavadvāpi caratyavanyām ||

Naked or clothed, or clad in bark or hide, he abides in consciousness as his garment. Like a madman, or like a child, or like a wandering spirit, he moves about the earth.

This describes the indifference of a sage to appearances. It is not a reason to ignore real mental illness in oneself or others, nor to trust anyone just because they behave oddly and claim to be enlightened.

Meaning today and context

We cannot judge a person's inner life by their clothes or manner. Freedom inside does not need to look a certain way outside.

The guru says the knower may look like anyone at all; outward appearance is no sign of his inner state.

1.541 Guru to Disciple

kāmānniṣkāmarūpī saṃścaratyekacaro muniḥ | svātmanaiva sadā tuṣṭaḥ svayaṃ sarvātmanā sthitaḥ ||

Moving among objects of desire, yet himself free of desire, the sage goes about alone, always content in his own Self, abiding as the Self of all.

Meaning today and context

Desire is not defeated by running from everything but by finding a contentment that does not need the next thing. Being 'alone' here means complete in oneself, not cut off from others.

The guru describes the knower as desireless and content in himself.

Sometimes he seems a fool, sometimes a sage, sometimes he has a king's splendour; sometimes he seems lost, sometimes gentle; sometimes he lies still like a python, taking what comes; sometimes he is honoured, sometimes scorned, sometimes unknown. So the wise one moves about, ever happy in supreme bliss.

Praise, insult, fame and obscurity come and go. When our sense of worth does not depend on how we are seen, we can pass through all of them at peace.

The guru describes how the knower may appear in many ways while staying inwardly blissful.

1.543 Guru to Disciple

nirdhano'pi sadā tuṣṭo'pyasahāyo mahābalaḥ | nityatṛpto'pyabhuñjāno'pyasamaḥ samadarśanaḥ ||

Though without wealth, he is always content; though without helpers, he is mighty; though not feasting, he is ever satisfied; though without equal, he sees all as equal.

Inner contentment does not make poverty or isolation good; if you are struggling for basic needs or are alone in a crisis, seek practical help and support.

Meaning today and context

Contentment, strength and fulfilment do not have to come from money, support or consumption. And the greatest people treat everyone as equals.

The guru lists the paradoxes of the knower's life.

1.544 Guru to Disciple

api kurvannakurvāṇaścābhoktā phalabhogyapi | śarīryapyaśarīryeṣa paricchinno'pi sarvagaḥ ||

Even while acting he does not act; even while experiencing results he is not the enjoyer; though embodied he is bodiless; though seemingly limited he is all-pervading.

This is a statement of non-dual truth, not a reason to stop practising, caring for oneself or others, or seeking help and treatment when needed.

Meaning today and context

One can do one's work fully while not being caught in the story of 'I did it'. That frees action from both pride and anxiety.

The guru continues the paradoxes: the knower acts and enjoys, yet is not the doer or enjoyer.

1.545 Guru to Disciple

aśarīraṃ sadā santamimaṃ brahmavidaṃ kvacit | priyāpriye na spṛśatastathaiva ca śubhāśubhe ||

This knower of Brahman, who is always bodiless in truth, is never touched by the pleasant or the unpleasant, nor by good or evil.

This does not mean the realised are beyond ethics or that anyone may ignore right and wrong; it describes freedom from the doer's sense of 'I', not a licence.

Meaning today and context

When we stop identifying with every gain and loss, the ups and downs of life still happen but no longer define us.

The guru says pleasant and unpleasant, good and evil, do not touch the knower of Brahman.

1.546 Guru to Disciple

sthūlādisaṃbandhavato'bhimāninaḥ | sukhaṃ ca duḥkhaṃ ca śubhāśubhe ca | vidhvastabandhasya sadātmano muneḥ | kutaḥ śubhaṃ vāpyaśubhaṃ phalaṃ vā ||

Pleasure and pain, good and bad, belong to one who identifies with the gross body and the rest. For the sage whose bonds are destroyed and who is the real Self, where could good or bad results come from?

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from identifying with the body and its circumstances. Loosening that identification brings a freedom that circumstances cannot give.

The guru explains why: pleasure, pain and merit belong to one who identifies with the body.

tamasā grastavadbhānādagrasto'pi ravirjanaiḥ | grasta ityucyate bhrāntyāṃ hyajñātvā vastulakṣaṇam ||

Because it appears to be swallowed by darkness, people in their confusion say the sun is swallowed, though it is not, not knowing the real nature of the thing.

Meaning today and context

Appearances can mislead. What seems covered or diminished may, in fact, be untouched.

The guru gives the eclipse analogy.

1.548 Guru to Disciple

tadvaddehādibandhebhyo vimuktaṃ brahmavittamam | paśyanti dehivanmūḍhāḥ śarīrābhāsadarśanāt ||

In the same way, the deluded see the greatest knower of Brahman, who is free from the bonds of body and the rest, as an embodied person, because they see the appearance of a body.

Meaning today and context

We usually see people as their bodies and roles. There may be far more to someone than what we see of them.

The guru applies the eclipse analogy to the knower.

1.549 Guru to Disciple

ahirnirlvayanīṃ vāyaṃ muktvā dehaṃ tu tiṣṭhati | itastataścālyamāno yatkiṃcitprāṇavāyunā ||

Like a snake that has cast off its slough, he remains apart from the body, which is moved here and there a little by the vital breath.

This is about identity, not about neglecting the body. Keep caring for your health; if you feel detached from your body in a distressing way, talk to a doctor or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The image is of complete non-identification: the body goes on its way, but no longer feels like 'me'. Practically, it can mean not being ruled by every bodily mood.

The guru compares the knower's relation to his body with a snake and its shed skin.

1.550 Guru to Disciple

strotasā nīyate dāru yathā nimnonnatasthalam | daivena nīyate deho yathākālopabhuktiṣu ||

As a log is carried by the current to low ground and high, so the body is carried by destiny to its experiences as their time comes.

This describes the realised sage's relation to prārabdha. It is not a reason to stop making effort, or to accept injustice, illness or harm as fate.

Meaning today and context

Some things in life simply arrive with time. We can meet the highs and lows without fighting them inwardly, while still doing what is ours to do.

The guru says the knower's body follows its course under destiny, like a log in a stream.
