Verses 51–100

1.51 Guru to Disciple

ṛṇamocanakartāraḥ pituḥ santi sutādayaḥ | bandhamocanakartā tu svasmādanyo na kaścana ||

A father has sons and others who can free him from his debts, but to free oneself from bondage there is no one other than oneself.

Meaning today and context

Family and friends can share many burdens, but no one can do your inner work for you. Your clarity and freedom have to be won by you.

The guru begins: others can help with outer debts, but freeing oneself from bondage is one's own task.

1.52 Guru to Disciple

mastakanyastabhārāderduḥkhamanyairnivāryate | kṣudhādikṛtaduḥkhaṃ tu vinā svena na kenacit ||

The pain of a load carried on the head can be removed by others, but the pain caused by hunger and the like is removed by no one except oneself.

Meaning today and context

Someone can carry your bag, but no one can eat for you. Some needs, including understanding yourself, can only be met by your own effort.

The guru gives an example of what others can and cannot do for us.

1.53 Guru to Disciple

pathyamauṣadhasevā ca kriyate yena rogiṇā | ārogyasiddhirdṛṣṭāsya nānyānuṣṭhitakarmaṇā ||

It is the sick person who keeps the right diet and takes the medicine who is seen to recover health, not through actions performed by someone else.

About inner effort only: for illness, follow your doctor; this verse is not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

A doctor can prescribe, but you have to take the medicine. The same holds for inner healing: guidance helps, practice is yours.

The guru continues the examples of self-effort with a sick person.

1.54 Guru to Disciple

vastusvarūpaṃ sphuṭabodhacakṣuṣā | svenaiva vedyaṃ na tu paṇḍitena | candrasvarūpaṃ nijacakṣuṣaiva | jñātavyamanyairavagamyate kim ||

The true nature of reality is to be known by oneself, with the eye of clear understanding, not through a scholar. The form of the moon must be seen with one's own eyes; can it be known through others?

Meaning today and context

Others can point to the moon, but you have to look. Second-hand belief is not the same as seeing for yourself.

The guru says the truth of what is real must be seen by one's own eye of understanding, like seeing the moon for oneself.

1.55 Guru to Disciple

avidyākāmakarmādipāśabandhaṃ vimocitum | kaḥ śaknuyādvinātmānaṃ kalpakoṭiśatairapi ||

Who but oneself could untie the bondage of the noose of ignorance, desire, action and the rest, even in a hundred crore of ages?

Meaning today and context

The knots that hold us, not knowing who we are, wanting, and acting from that wanting, are tied inside us, and only we can untie them.

The guru says no one but oneself can untie the knots of ignorance, desire and action.

1.56 Guru to Disciple

na yogena na sāṃkhyena karmaṇā no na vidyayā | brahmātmaikatvabodhena mokṣaḥ sidhyati nānyathā ||

Not by yoga, not by Sankhya, not by ritual action, not by learning; liberation is attained by the realisation of the oneness of Brahman and the Self, and in no other way.

Meaning today and context

Techniques, theories and rituals can prepare you, but freedom itself comes from seeing what you truly are. Practices are means, not the goal.

The guru states that liberation comes only by knowing the oneness of Brahman and the Self, not by yoga, Sankhya, ritual or learning.

1.57 Guru to Disciple

vīṇāyā rūpasaundaryaṃ tantrīvādanasauṣṭhavam | prajārañjanamātraṃ tanna sāmrājyāya kalpate ||

The beauty of a vina's form and the skill of playing its strings serve only to please people; they do not win a kingdom.

Meaning today and context

Being impressive is not the same as reaching the goal. Polish and performance can delight others while leaving the real task undone.

The guru compares learned display to a beautifully played vina: it pleases, but does not win a kingdom.

1.58 Guru to Disciple

vāgvaikharī śabdajharī śāstravyākhyānakauśalam | vaiduṣyaṃ viduṣāṃ tadvadbhuktaye na tu muktaye ||

Fluent speech, a cascade of words, skill in expounding the scriptures, the erudition of the learned: these likewise bring worldly enjoyment, not liberation.

Meaning today and context

You can talk brilliantly about peace and still not be at peace. Knowledge used for reputation or income is useful, but it does not change you inside.

The guru applies the vina image to scholars: eloquence and skill in explaining scripture bring enjoyment, not liberation.

1.59 Guru to Disciple

avijñāte pare tattve śāstrādhītistu niṣphalā | vijñāte'pi pare tattve śāstrādhītistu niṣphalā ||

When the supreme truth is not known, study of the scriptures is fruitless; and when the supreme truth is known, study of the scriptures is fruitless too.

Read in context: the next verses urge effort to know the truth. It is not a dismissal of study for a beginner.

Meaning today and context

Books are a ladder, not a home. Without seeking what they point to, reading becomes mere collecting; once you have seen it, you no longer need the ladder.

The guru says scripture study is fruitless if the truth is not known, and also once it is known.

1.60 Guru to Disciple

śabdajālaṃ mahāraṇyaṃ cittabhramaṇakāraṇam | ataḥ prayatnājjñātavyaṃ tattvajñaistattvamātmanaḥ ||

A net of words is a great forest that sets the mind wandering. Therefore those who seek the truth should strive to know the truth of the Self.

Meaning today and context

Endless reading, videos and debates can become a maze that keeps the mind busy without arriving anywhere. At some point, stop gathering words and look within.

The guru warns that a web of words is a vast forest that makes the mind wander, so the truth of the Self must be known directly.

1.61 Guru to Disciple

ajñānasarpadaṣṭasya brahmajñānauṣadhaṃ vinā | kimu vedaiśca śāstraiśca kimu mantraiḥ kimauṣadhaiḥ ||

For one bitten by the snake of ignorance, without the medicine of the knowledge of Brahman, what use are the Vedas and scriptures, what use are mantras and medicines?

A metaphor for ignorance only; for a real snakebite or illness, seek medical help at once.

Meaning today and context

When the root problem is misunderstanding who you are, no amount of outer remedies will reach it. The cure has to fit the illness.

The guru compares ignorance to a snakebite whose only antidote is knowledge of Brahman.

1.62 Guru to Disciple

na gacchati vinā pānaṃ vyādhirauṣadhaśabdataḥ | vināparokṣānubhavaṃ brahmaśabdairna mucyate ||

A disease does not go by repeating the word 'medicine' without drinking it; without direct experience, one is not freed by the words 'Brahman'.

Meaning today and context

Spiritual vocabulary is not transformation. Saying 'I am at peace' or 'all is one' does nothing until it is actually lived and seen.

The guru says repeating the word 'Brahman' frees no one, just as saying the name of a medicine cures no disease.

1.63 Guru to Disciple

akṛtvā dṛśyavilayamajñātvā tattvamātmanaḥ | brahmaśabdaiḥ kuto muktiruktimātraphalairnṛṇām ||

Without dissolving the world of objects and without knowing the truth of the Self, how can people be liberated by words about Brahman, whose only fruit is the uttering of them?

Meaning today and context

Talk produces more talk. Until your attention actually turns from the outer show to what is aware of it, words stay words.

The guru continues: without dissolving the seen world and knowing the Self, mere words about Brahman give people only words.

1.64 Guru to Disciple

akṛtvā śatrusaṃhāramagatvākhilabhūśriyam | rājāhamiti śabdānno rājā bhavitumarhati ||

Without destroying his enemies and without taking hold of the wealth of the whole land, one cannot become a king by the mere words 'I am king'.

The enemies here are an image for an example; this is not a call to harm anyone.

Meaning today and context

Titles and claims do not make something true. Calling yourself free, calm or wise is not the same as having done the work.

The guru gives the example of a king: no one becomes king by just saying so.

1.65 Guru to Disciple

āptoktiṃ khananaṃ tathopariśilādyutkarṣaṇaṃ svīkṛtiṃ | nikṣepaḥ samapekṣate nahi bahiḥ śabdaistu nirgacchati | tadvadbrahmavidopadeśamananadhyānādibhirlabhyate | māyākāryatirohitaṃ svamamalaṃ tattvaṃ na duryuktibhiḥ ||

A treasure hidden underground needs reliable information, digging, removal of the stones and earth above it, and then grasping it; it does not come out by calling to it with words. Likewise, the pure truth of one's own Self, hidden by the effects of maya, is gained through the teaching of one who knows Brahman, and by reflection, meditation and the like, not by faulty reasoning.

Meaning today and context

What is most valuable in you is already there, but covered. It takes good guidance, patient reflection and steady practice to uncover it; clever arguments won't dig it out.

The guru compares the Self to buried treasure, which needs right information, digging and effort, not mere words.

1.66 Guru to Disciple

tasmātsarvaprayatnena bhavabandhavimuktaye | svaireva yatnaḥ kartavyo rogādāviva paṇḍitaiḥ ||

Therefore, with every effort, the wise should strive by themselves for release from the bondage of worldly existence, as they would in illness and the like.

Meaning today and context

We take our health seriously when we are sick. Inner freedom deserves the same urgency and personal effort, not a vague hope that it will happen.

The guru concludes that one must make every effort oneself for freedom, as the wise do when ill.

1.67 Guru to Disciple

yastvayādya kṛtaḥ praśno varīyāñchāstravinmataḥ | sūtraprāyo nigūḍhārtho jñātavyaśca mumukṣubhiḥ ||

The question you have asked today is considered excellent by those who know the scriptures; it is like a sutra, of hidden meaning, and worth knowing for those who seek liberation.

Meaning today and context

A good question is worth more than many answers. Asking the right thing, briefly and sincerely, opens the way to real understanding.

The guru praises the disciple's question as weighty, concise like a sutra and deep in meaning.

1.68 Guru to Disciple

śṛṇuṣvāvahito vidvanyanmayā samudīryate | tadetacchravaṇātsadyo bhavabandhādvimokṣyase ||

Listen attentively, learned one, to what I declare. By hearing it you will at once be freed from the bondage of worldly existence.

Meaning today and context

Attentive listening is itself a practice. When we listen with a quiet, open mind, understanding can come much faster.

The guru asks the disciple to listen attentively, promising freedom from bondage through hearing.

1.69 Guru to Disciple

mokṣasya hetuḥ prathamo nigadyate | vairāgyamatyantamanityavastuṣu | tataḥ śamaścāpi damastitikṣā | nyāsaḥ prasaktākhilakarmaṇāṃ bhṛśam ||

The first means to liberation is said to be utter dispassion towards impermanent things; then calm of mind, self-restraint, forbearance, and thoroughly letting go of all actions one is attached to.

Not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people this means inner freedom from clinging, while still caring for those who depend on them.

Meaning today and context

The path starts with seeing that what passes cannot satisfy for long, then calming the mind, governing the senses, bearing ups and downs, and loosening compulsive busyness.

The guru lists the first means to liberation: deep dispassion for passing things, then calm, self-control, endurance and giving up attached actions.

1.70 Guru to Disciple

tataḥ śrutistanmananaṃ satattva- | dhyānaṃ ciraṃ nityanirantaraṃ muneḥ | tato'vikalpaṃ parametya vidvān | ihaiva nirvāṇasukhaṃ samṛcchati ||

Then come hearing the teaching, reflecting on it, and long, constant, unbroken meditation on the truth by the sage. Then the wise one reaches the supreme, free of all mental division, and attains the bliss of nirvana here in this very life.

Meaning today and context

Understanding deepens in stages: hear, think it through, then live with it in steady attention. Peace is not only promised for later; it can be found in this life.

The guru continues the sequence: hearing, reflection, long unbroken meditation, and finally the bliss of freedom here and now.

1.71 Guru to Disciple

yadboddhavyaṃ tavedānīmātmānātmavivecanam | taducyate mayā samyakśrutvātmanyavadhāraya ||

What you must now understand is the discrimination of Self and not-Self. I will tell it to you properly; hear it and fix it firmly in your mind.

Meaning today and context

Hearing is only the start; the teaching has to be made one's own, settled firmly within, until it shapes how one sees.

The guru announces that he will now teach the discrimination between Self and not-Self.

1.72 Guru to Disciple

majjāsthimedaḥpalaraktacarma- | tvagāhvayairdhātubhirebhiranvitam | pādoruvakṣobhujapṛṣṭhamastakaiḥ | aṅgairupāṅgairupayuktametat ||

Made up of these tissues called marrow, bone, fat, flesh, blood, skin and the outer skin, and furnished with limbs and their parts, feet, thighs, chest, arms, back and head,

This describes the body to loosen identification with it, not to breed disgust or self-contempt. Not for someone struggling with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; if that is you, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Looking plainly at the body as something made of parts helps us see it as something we have and care for, rather than the whole of who we are.

The guru begins describing the gross body as the first thing that is not the Self.

1.73 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃmametiprathitaṃ śarīraṃ | mohāspadaṃ sthūlamitīryate budhaiḥ | nabhonabhasvaddahanāmbubhūmayaḥ | sūkṣmāṇi bhūtāni bhavanti tāni ||

this body, widely known through the notions 'I' and 'mine', the seat of delusion, is called the gross body by the wise. Space, air, fire, water and earth are the subtle elements;

यह शरीर, जो 'मैं' और 'मेरा' के भाव से प्रसिद्ध है और मोह का आधार है, ज्ञानी इसे स्थूल शरीर कहते हैं। आकाश, वायु, अग्नि, जल और पृथ्वी, ये सूक्ष्म भूत हैं;

Meaning today and context

Much of our worry centres on the body as 'me' and 'mine'. Noticing that this identification is a habit, not a fact, can loosen its grip.

The guru completes the description of the gross body, the seat of 'I' and 'mine', and introduces the five subtle elements.

1.74 Guru to Disciple

parasparāṃśairmilitāni bhūtvā | sthūlāni ca sthūlaśarīrahetavaḥ | mātrāstadīyā viṣayā bhavanti | śabdādayaḥ pañca sukhāya bhoktuḥ ||

Combining with portions of one another, they become gross and are the causes of the gross body. Their subtle essences become the five sense objects, sound and the rest, for the enjoyment of the experiencer.

Meaning today and context

The world of sound, touch, sight, taste and smell exists to be experienced. Seeing it as experience rather than as the source of who we are keeps us steadier.

The guru explains how the subtle elements combine into gross elements, which form the body, and how their subtle essences become the five sense objects.

1.75 Guru to Disciple

ya eṣu mūḍhā viṣayeṣu baddhā | rāgorupāśena sudurdamena | āyānti niryāntyadha ūrdhvamuccaiḥ | svakarmadūtena javena nītāḥ ||

Those deluded ones who are bound to these sense objects by the strong, hard-to-break rope of attachment come and go, down, up and higher, carried swiftly by the messenger of their own karma.

Meaning today and context

When we are tied to wanting, our own choices keep throwing us up and down, from highs to lows. The rope is attachment, and the momentum is of our own making.

The guru describes how those bound to sense objects by attachment are driven up and down through births by their own actions.

śabdādibhiḥ pañcabhireva pañca | pañcatvamāpuḥ svaguṇena baddhāḥ | kuraṅgamātaṅgapataṅgamīna- | bhṛṅgā naraḥ pañcabhirañcitaḥ kim ||

The deer, elephant, moth, fish and bee each meet death, bound by its own attraction to just one of the five, sound and the rest. What then of a man who is attached to all five?

Meaning today and context

The deer lured by sound, the elephant by touch, the moth by light, the fish by taste, the bee by scent: one pull is enough to trap a creature. We face all five at once, so a little care with what we chase is wisdom, not gloom.

The guru gives the well-known example of five creatures each destroyed by attachment to one sense, and asks what then of a human attached to all five.

1.77 Guru to Disciple

doṣeṇa tīvro viṣayaḥ kṛṣṇasarpaviṣādapi | viṣaṃ nihanti bhoktāraṃ draṣṭāraṃ cakṣuṣāpyayam ||

In the harm it does, a sense object is fiercer even than the venom of a black cobra: poison kills only the one who swallows it, but this kills even one who merely looks at it with the eyes.

Meaning today and context

Craving can begin with a glance: a screen, an advert, someone else's life. What we keep looking at shapes what we want, so guard your attention.

The guru says sense objects are more dangerous than a cobra's venom, since poison kills only the one who takes it.

1.78 Guru to Disciple

viṣayāśāmahāpāśādyo vimuktaḥ sudustyajāt | sa eva kalpate muktyai nānyaḥ ṣaṭśāstravedyapi ||

Only one who is free from the great, very hard to cast off noose of longing for sense objects is fit for liberation, and no other, even if he knows all six systems of philosophy.

Meaning today and context

Freedom depends less on how much you know than on how much you crave. A learned person driven by wanting is still bound.

The guru says only one free of the great noose of longing for sense objects is fit for liberation, however learned another may be.

1.79 Guru to Disciple

āpātavairāgyavato mumukṣūn | bhavābdhipāraṃ pratiyātumudyatān | āśāgraho majjayate'ntarāle | nigṛhya kaṇṭhe vinivartya vegāt ||

Seekers of liberation whose dispassion is only on the surface, who have set out to cross the ocean of worldly existence, are seized by the throat midway by the crocodile of longing, violently turned back, and drowned.

Meaning today and context

A burst of resolve after a disappointment is not the same as lasting change. Old desires return midway; real freedom needs dispassion that goes deep.

The guru warns that seekers with only shallow dispassion are seized midway by the crocodile of longing and dragged under.

viṣayākhyagraho yena suviraktyasinā hataḥ | sa gacchati bhavāmbhodheḥ pāraṃ pratyūhavarjitaḥ ||

One who has slain the crocodile called sense objects with the sword of true dispassion reaches the far shore of the ocean of worldly existence, free of obstacles.

Meaning today and context

When dispassion is real, the obstacles that kept dragging us back lose their power. Clarity about what does not satisfy is a sharp tool.

The guru says one who has slain the crocodile of sense objects with the sword of true dispassion crosses the ocean unhindered.

Know that death meets at every step the one of clouded understanding who walks the treacherous paths of sense objects. But for one who walks by the words of well-wishers, good people and the guru, and by his own reasoning, the goal is reached; know this to be true.

Meaning today and context

Chasing pleasure without judgement is a slippery road. Good advice from people who wish you well, joined with your own careful thinking, is what actually gets you somewhere.

The guru contrasts one who walks the rough road of sense objects, meeting death at every step, with one who follows good people, the guru and his own reasoning.

1.82 Guru to Disciple

If you truly long for liberation, shun sense objects from afar, like poison, and always cherish with care, like nectar, contentment, compassion, forgiveness, straightforwardness, calm and self-control.

Not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people this means inner freedom from clinging, while still caring for those who depend on them.

Meaning today and context

It is not enough to drop what harms; cultivate what heals. Contentment, kindness, forgiveness, honesty, calm and self-discipline are the nectar that takes the place of the poison.

The guru tells the disciple to shun sense objects like poison and cherish contentment, compassion, forgiveness, straightforwardness, calm and self-control like nectar.

anukṣaṇaṃ yatparihṛtya kṛtyaṃ | anādyavidyākṛtabandhamokṣaṇam | dehaḥ parārtho'yamamuṣya poṣaṇe | yaḥ sajjate sa svamanena hanti ||

One who sets aside what must be done at every moment, release from the bondage made by beginningless ignorance, and clings to nourishing this body, which exists for the sake of another, destroys himself by it.

Not a reason to neglect food, health or medical care; the body must be looked after. If you are struggling with eating or self-harm, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Caring for the body is necessary; living only for its comforts and looks can crowd out everything that gives life meaning.

The guru warns that one who neglects the work of freeing himself and is absorbed in pampering the body, which serves another's purpose, destroys himself.

1.84 Guru to Disciple

śarīrapoṣaṇārthī sanya ātmānaṃ didṛkṣati | grāhaṃ dārudhiyā dhṛtvā nadīṃ tartuṃ sa gacchati ||

One who wishes to see the Self while bent on nourishing the body sets out to cross a river holding on to a crocodile, thinking it a log.

Not a reason to neglect food, health or medical care; the body must be looked after. If you are struggling with eating or self-harm, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

What we lean on for safety can be what pulls us under. If comfort is our real goal, it will quietly undo our search for something deeper.

The guru compares one who wants to see the Self while devoted to feeding the body to someone crossing a river holding a crocodile he takes for a log.

1.85 Guru to Disciple

moha eva mahāmṛtyurmumukṣorvapurādiṣu | moho vinirjito yena sa muktipadamarhati ||

For a seeker of liberation, delusion about the body and the like is itself the great death. One who has conquered this delusion is worthy of the state of freedom.

When someone is facing death or thinking about it, this verse is about the Self, not an invitation to die. If you are in distress, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Believing we are only the body is what makes ageing, illness and loss so frightening. Seeing past that belief is a kind of freedom while still living.

The guru says delusion about the body and the like is the great death for a seeker; one who conquers it is fit for liberation.

1.86 Guru to Disciple

mohaṃ jahi mahāmṛtyuṃ dehadārasutādiṣu | yaṃ jitvā munayo yānti tadviṣṇoḥ paramaṃ padam ||

Conquer delusion, the great death, over body, wife, children and the rest; having conquered it, sages reach that supreme state of Vishnu.

Not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities; for most people this means inner freedom from clinging, while still caring for those who depend on them. The verse addresses a male renunciate; it applies equally to anyone's attachments and says nothing about any person's worth.

Meaning today and context

Love for family is not the problem; possessive clinging and the confusion that comes with it are. Loving without that grip is freer for everyone.

The guru urges the disciple to conquer delusion over body, wife and children, the great death, by conquering which sages reach the supreme state.

tvaṅmāṃsarudhirasnāyumedomajjāsthisaṃkulam | pūrṇaṃ mūtrapurīṣābhyāṃ sthūlaṃ nindyamidaṃ vapuḥ ||

Crowded with skin, flesh, blood, sinew, fat, marrow and bone, filled with urine and faeces: this gross body is worthy of censure.

This describes the body to loosen identification with it, not to breed disgust or self-contempt. Not for someone struggling with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; if that is you, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The blunt description is meant to break the spell of vanity and fear around the body, so that one does not mistake it for one's whole self. Care for it, but do not be ruled by it.

The guru describes the gross body bluntly as made of skin, flesh and bone and full of waste, and so not worth clinging to.

1.88 Guru to Disciple

pañcīkṛtebhyo bhūtebhyaḥ sthūlebhyaḥ pūrvakarmaṇā | samutpannamidaṃ sthūlaṃ bhogāyatanamātmanaḥ | avasthā jāgarastasya sthūlārthānubhavo yataḥ ||

Born through past karma from the compounded gross elements, this gross body is the dwelling in which the Self has its experiences. Its state is waking, because in it gross objects are experienced.

Meaning today and context

The body is how we meet the world in waking life. Seeing it as an instrument of experience, not the one who experiences, gives some distance from its moods.

The guru explains that the gross body, born of the compounded elements through past karma, is the Self's seat of experience, and its state is waking. In this edition the verse has three lines.

1.89 Guru to Disciple

bāhyendriyaiḥ sthūlapadārthasevāṃ | srakcandanastryādivicitrarūpām | karoti jīvaḥ svayametadātmanā | tasmātpraśastirvapuṣo'sya jāgare ||

Through the outer senses the individual self, taking this body as itself, enjoys gross things in their many forms: garlands, sandalwood, women and the like. Hence this body is prominent in the waking state.

The mention of women among objects of enjoyment reflects the renunciate, male-addressed viewpoint of its time. It is about one's own craving, and must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Most of our waking hours go into enjoying things through the senses while taking the body to be ourselves. Simply noticing this is the beginning of discrimination.

The guru says that in waking the individual, identified with the body, enjoys gross things through the outer senses, which is why the gross body is prominent in waking.

sarvo'pi bāhyasaṃsāraḥ puruṣasya yadāśrayaḥ | viddhi dehamidaṃ sthūlaṃ gṛhavadgṛhamedhinaḥ ||

Know this gross body to be, like a house for a householder, that on which a person's whole outer worldly life depends.

Meaning today and context

You live in your body as you live in a house: it matters and needs upkeep, but you are not the house.

The guru compares the gross body to a householder's house: the support of a person's whole outer life.

Birth, ageing and death are properties of the gross body; so are stoutness and the like, the various stages beginning with childhood, the rules of varna, ashrama and so on, its many diseases, and particular treatment such as worship, contempt and high honour.

Varna and ashrama are named here as belonging to the body, not the Self; never read them as birth-based caste or a reason to exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Ageing, illness, labels, praise and insult all happen to the body and its social role. They are real in their place, but they do not define who you are.

The guru lists what belongs to the gross body, not the Self: birth, ageing, death, stages of life, social rules, illness, and honour or insult.

1.92 Guru to Disciple

buddhīndriyāṇi śravaṇaṃ tvagakṣi | ghrāṇaṃ ca jihvā viṣayāvabodhanāt | vākpāṇipādā gudamapyupasthaḥ | karmendriyāṇi pravaṇena karmasu ||

Ears, skin, eyes, nose and tongue are the organs of knowledge, because they make objects known. Speech, hands, feet, the organ of excretion and the organ of generation are the organs of action, because they tend towards action.

Meaning today and context

We know through some instruments and act through others. Seeing them as instruments helps us use them deliberately instead of being driven by them.

The guru names the five organs of knowledge and the five organs of action.

1.93 Guru to Disciple

nigadyate'ntaḥkaraṇaṃ manodhīḥ | ahaṃkṛtiścittamiti svavṛttibhiḥ | manastu saṃkalpavikalpanādibhiḥ | buddhiḥ padārthādhyavasāyadharmataḥ ||

The inner instrument is called mind, intellect, ego and chitta according to its own functions: mind, through willing, doubting and the like; intellect, through its nature of determining what things are.

Meaning today and context

The part of you that keeps going back and forth is the mind; the part that settles and decides is the intellect. When you are overthinking, it helps to know which one is speaking.

The guru explains that the inner instrument is called mind, intellect, ego or chitta according to its function; the mind wills and doubts, the intellect decides.

atrābhimānādahamityahaṃkṛtiḥ | svārthānusandhānaguṇena cittam ||

Here, through identification as 'I', it is the ego; through its quality of dwelling on its own concerns, it is chitta.

Meaning today and context

The voice that says 'this is me, this is mine' is the ego; the part that keeps returning to what matters to it is chitta. Both are functions of the mind, not the Self.

The guru completes the description of the inner instrument: ego through the sense of 'I', chitta through dwelling on its own concerns. In this edition the verse has only two lines.

prāṇāpānavyānodānasamānā bhavatyasau prāṇaḥ | svayameva vṛttibhedādvikṛtibhedātsuvarṇasalilādivat ||

This prana itself becomes prana, apana, vyana, udana and samana through differences of function and modification, like gold or water.

Descriptive, not a breathing method; practise any pranayama with a qualified teacher. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

One energy shows up in many ways, as one gold becomes many ornaments. Behind the many functions of life there is one source.

The guru explains that one vital force, prana, takes five names according to its functions, as gold or water takes many forms.

vāgādi pañca śravaṇādi pañca | prāṇādi pañcābhramukhāni pañca | buddhyādyavidyāpi ca kāmakarmaṇī | puryaṣṭakaṃ sūkṣmaśarīramāhuḥ ||

The five beginning with speech, the five beginning with hearing, the five beginning with prana, the five beginning with space, the intellect and the rest, ignorance, and desire and action: these, the 'city of eight', they call the subtle body.

Meaning today and context

Beneath the visible body lies a whole inner system of senses, energies, thoughts, ignorance, desires and habits of action. This, not the flesh, is what we mostly carry with us.

The guru defines the subtle body as the 'city of eight': the organs of action and of knowledge, the five pranas, the five elements, the inner instrument, ignorance, desire and karma.

idaṃ śarīraṃ śṛṇu sūkṣmasaṃjñitaṃ | liṅgaṃ tvapañcīkṛtabhūtasaṃbhavam | savāsanaṃ karmaphalānubhāvakaṃ | svājñānato'nādirupādhirātmanaḥ ||

Now hear of the body called subtle, the linga: it arises from the elements before they are compounded, carries the latent impressions, and makes one experience the fruits of action. Through not knowing oneself, it is the Self's beginningless limiting adjunct.

Meaning today and context

Beyond the physical body there is an inner layer of habits, impressions and mental tendencies that shapes what we experience. It feels like 'me', but the text says it is a covering we take on through not knowing ourselves.

The guru, having described the gross body, now describes the subtle body to the disciple.

svapno bhavatyasya vibhaktyavasthā | svamātraśeṣeṇa vibhāti yatra | svapne tu buddhiḥ svayameva jāgrat | kālīnanānāvidhavāsanābhiḥ ||

Dream is its own distinct state, in which it shines with only itself remaining. In dream the intellect itself, by the many kinds of impressions gathered during waking, becomes the actor.

Meaning today and context

Our dreams are built from what we have taken in while awake. What fills our days, our fears, wants and images, comes back to us at night.

The guru explains that dreaming is the state proper to the subtle body.

kartrādibhāvaṃ pratipadya rājate | yatra svayaṃ bhāti hyayaṃ parātmā | dhīmātrakopādhiraśeṣasākṣī | na lipyate tatkṛtakarmaleśaiḥ | yasmādasaṅgastata eva karmabhiḥ | na lipyate kiṃcidupādhinā kṛtaiḥ ||

There the intellect takes on the role of doer and the rest and appears so, while this supreme Self shines by itself, with the intellect alone as its adjunct, the witness of all, untouched by the least trace of the actions done by it. Because it is unattached, it is not touched at all by the actions done by its adjunct.

Meaning today and context

Even when the mind is busy acting, scheming and suffering, there is a part of you that only watches. Knowing that awareness is untouched can bring steadiness when the mind is in turmoil.

The guru continues on the dream state: the intellect plays doer, while the Self shines in it as an untouched witness.

sarvavyāpṛtikaraṇaṃ liṅgamidaṃ syāccidātmanaḥ puṃsaḥ | vāsyādikamiva takṣṇastenaivātmā bhavatyasaṅgo'yam ||

This subtle body is the instrument of every activity of the person, whose nature is consciousness, like an adze and other tools of a carpenter. For that very reason the Self is unattached.

Meaning today and context

The mind and senses are tools we use, not who we are. A carpenter is not the chisel; seeing this lets us use our abilities without being defined by them.

The guru compares the subtle body to a craftsman's tools, to show that the Self remains unattached.
