Verses 101–150

1.101 Guru to Disciple

andhatvamandatvapaṭutvadharmāḥ | sauguṇyavaiguṇyavaśāddhi cakṣuṣaḥ | bādhiryamūkatvamukhāstathaiva | śrotrādidharmā na tu vetturātmanaḥ ||

Blindness, dimness and sharpness are properties of the eye, owing to its soundness or defect; likewise deafness, dumbness and the like belong to the ear and other organs, not to the Self, the knower.

Not a reason to neglect medical care for the senses or body; it is about identity, not treatment.

Meaning today and context

A weak eye or failing hearing is a condition of the body, not a lessening of who you are. Your worth and awareness are not measured by the state of your senses.

The guru says the defects and strengths of the senses belong to the senses, not to the Self that knows.

1.102 Guru to Disciple

ucchvāsaniḥśvāsavijṛmbhaṇakṣut | prasyandanādyutkramaṇādikāḥ kriyāḥ | prāṇādikarmāṇi vadanti tajñāḥ | prāṇasya dharmāvaśanāpipāse ||

Breathing in and out, yawning, sneezing, secretion, and leaving the body at death: these activities, the knowers say, are the functions of prana and its kinds. Hunger and thirst are properties of prana.

Meaning today and context

Hunger, thirst and breathing are the body's life-force at work. They are natural and need care, but they are not the whole of who we are.

The guru lists the functions of the vital breath, prana.

1.103 Guru to Disciple

antaḥkaraṇameteṣu cakṣurādiṣu varṣmaṇi | ahamityabhimānena tiṣṭhatyābhāsatejasā ||

The inner organ dwells in these, the eye and the other senses, and in the body, with the sense of 'I', shining with the borrowed light of consciousness.

Meaning today and context

The feeling 'I am this body, I am seeing, I am hearing' is the mind lending itself to the body. It shines with a light that is not its own.

The guru introduces the inner organ, which identifies itself with the senses and body.

1.104 Guru to Disciple

ahaṃkāraḥ sa vijñeyaḥ kartā bhoktābhimānyayam | sattvādiguṇayogena cāvasthātrayamaśnute ||

Know that to be the ego, which claims to be doer and enjoyer. Joined with the gunas, sattva and the rest, it goes through the three states.

Meaning today and context

The voice that says 'I did this, I deserve that, I suffer' is the ego. Seeing it as a function of the mind, rather than our deepest self, loosens its grip.

The guru defines the ego, ahankara.

1.105 Guru to Disciple

viṣayāṇāmānukūlye sukhī duḥkhī viparyaye | sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ ca taddharmaḥ sadānandasya nātmanaḥ ||

When things go its way, it is happy; when they go against it, it is miserable. Pleasure and pain are its properties, not of the Self, which is ever bliss.

Meaning today and context

Our moods rise and fall with whether life goes our way. The text points to something in us that does not depend on circumstances, so a bad day need not define who we are.

The guru says pleasure and pain belong to the ego, not to the Self, which is always bliss.

1.106 Guru to Disciple

ātmārthatvena hi preyānviṣayo na svataḥ priyaḥ | svata eva hi sarveṣāmātmā priyatamo yataḥ | tata ātmā sadānando nāsya duḥkhaṃ kadācana ||

An object is dear because it serves the Self; it is not dear in itself. For the Self is, by its own nature, the dearest of all to everyone. Therefore the Self is ever bliss, and sorrow never belongs to it.

Meaning today and context

We chase things because we think they will make us happy; the love is really for the happiness itself. The text says that happiness is our own nature, not something outside to be grabbed.

The guru argues that the Self is bliss because everything else is loved for its sake.

1.107 Guru to Disciple

yatsuṣuptau nirviṣaya ātmānando'nubhūyate | śrutiḥ pratyakṣamaitihyamanumānaṃ ca jāgrati ||

In deep sleep the bliss of the Self is experienced without any object. Scripture, direct experience, tradition and inference all stand witness to this.

Meaning today and context

In deep sleep we have nothing, yet we wake saying 'I slept happily'. Peace does not need objects; it is already there when the mind is quiet.

The guru gives evidence that the Self is bliss: the joy of dreamless sleep.

1.108 Guru to Disciple

avyaktanāmnī parameśaśaktiḥ | anādyavidyā triguṇātmikā parā | kāryānumeyā sudhiyaiva māyā | yayā jagatsarvamidaṃ prasūyate ||

Called the unmanifest, the power of the supreme Lord, beginningless ignorance made of the three gunas, higher (than its effects): this is maya, to be inferred by the clear-minded from its effects, and by it this whole world is brought forth.

Meaning today and context

Maya is not seen directly; we know it by its effects, the way the world seems so solid and final. Recognising that our picture of things is not the whole truth is the start of clarity.

The guru begins describing maya, the unmanifest power behind the world.

1.109 Guru to Disciple

sannāpyasannāpyubhayātmikā no | bhinnāpyabhinnāpyubhayātmikā no | sāṅgāpyanaṅgā hyubhayātmikā no | mahādbhutānirvacanīyarūpā ||

It is neither real nor unreal nor both; neither different nor non-different nor both; neither with parts nor without parts nor both. It is most wonderful, its nature beyond description.

Meaning today and context

Some things in experience cannot be pinned down in neat categories. Maya is like that: it appears, so it is not nothing, but it does not last under inquiry, so it is not ultimately real.

The guru says maya cannot be described as real, unreal or both.

1.110 Guru to Disciple

śuddhādvayabrahmavibodhanāśyā | sarpabhramo rajjuvivekato yathā | rajastamaḥsattvamiti prasiddhā | guṇāstadīyāḥ prathitaiḥ svakāryaiḥ ||

It is destroyed by realising pure, non-dual Brahman, as the illusion of a snake is removed by discerning the rope. Its gunas, known as rajas, tamas and sattva, are recognised by their well-known effects.

Meaning today and context

A frightening snake vanishes when you see it was only a rope; nothing had to be killed. Many fears and confusions end the same way, by seeing clearly, not by fighting.

The guru says maya ends with knowledge of Brahman, and names its three gunas.

1.111 Guru to Disciple

vikṣepaśaktī rajasaḥ kriyātmikā | yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī | rāgādayo'syāḥ prabhavanti nityaṃ | duḥkhādayo ye manaso vikārāḥ ||

The projecting power belongs to rajas, whose nature is activity; from it the age-old urge to act has spread. From it arise constantly attachment and the rest, and sorrow and other disturbances of the mind.

Meaning today and context

The restless push to do more, want more and be busier comes from rajas. It gets things done, but unchecked it also brings attachment and sorrow.

The guru describes rajas: the projecting power that drives activity and desire.

1.112 Guru to Disciple

kāmaḥ krodho lobhadambhādyasūyā | ahaṃkārerṣyāmatsarādyāstu ghorāḥ | dharmā ete rājasāḥ pumpravṛttiḥ | yasmādeṣā tadrajo bandhahetuḥ ||

Desire, anger, greed, hypocrisy, spite, egotism, envy, jealousy and the like are terrible. These are the qualities of rajas; the outward drive of a person comes from it, and so rajas is a cause of bondage.

Meaning today and context

Anger, greed, envy and showing off are not random; they come from the same restless drive. Noticing that root helps us work on them together rather than one by one.

The guru lists the rajasic qualities and calls rajas a cause of bondage.

1.113 Guru to Disciple

eṣāvṛtirnāma tamoguṇasya | śaktirmayā vastvavabhāsate'nyathā | saiṣā nidānaṃ puruṣasya saṃsṛteḥ | vikṣepaśakteḥ pravaṇasya hetuḥ ||

This is the veiling power of tamas, by which a thing appears other than it is. It is the root cause of a person's transmigration and the cause that sets the projecting power in motion.

Meaning today and context

Before we act wrongly, we first see wrongly. Much of our suffering begins with a veil over the facts, and clearing that veil matters more than any later fix.

The guru describes tamas: the veiling power that makes things appear other than they are.

1.114 Guru to Disciple

prajñāvānapi paṇḍito'pi caturo'pyatyantasūkṣmātmadṛg- | vyālīḍhastamasā na vetti bahudhā saṃbodhito'pi sphuṭam | bhrāntyāropitameva sādhu kalayatyālambate tadguṇān | hantāsau prabalā durantatamasaḥ śaktirmahatyāvṛtiḥ ||

Even one who is wise, learned, clever, with very subtle insight into the Self, when gripped by tamas, does not understand clearly though told many times. What is projected by error he takes as real and clings to its qualities. Alas, how mighty is this great veiling power of dreadful tamas!

Meaning today and context

Intelligence and learning do not protect us from blind spots. Even very bright people can be told the same truth again and again and still not see it, so humility and patience are needed, with ourselves and others.

The guru describes how even clever and learned people are overpowered by the veiling power of tamas.

1.115 Guru to Disciple

abhāvanā vā viparītabhāvanā | asaṃbhāvanā vipratipattirasyāḥ | saṃsargayuktaṃ na vimuñcati dhruvaṃ | vikṣepaśaktiḥ kṣapayatyajasram ||

Its marks are: not perceiving the truth, perceiving it wrongly, doubting it is possible, and holding contrary views. It surely never lets go of one who is joined to it, and the projecting power torments him without cease.

Meaning today and context

Not seeing, seeing wrongly, doubting and arguing against the truth: these are four ways we stay stuck. Naming which one we are in can be the first step out.

The guru names the marks of the veiling power and says the projecting power torments without pause.

1.116 Guru to Disciple

ajñānamālasyajaḍatvanidrā- | pramādamūḍhatvamukhāstamoguṇāḥ | etaiḥ prayukto nahi vetti kiṃcin | nidrāluvatstambhavadeva tiṣṭhati ||

Ignorance, laziness, dullness, sleep, carelessness and stupor: these are the qualities of tamas. One gripped by them understands nothing, and stays like one heavy with sleep, or like a stump.

Persistent heaviness, oversleeping or inability to act can be signs of depression or illness; please see a doctor. Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Laziness, carelessness and mental fog are not just bad habits; they dim our understanding. Small steps of alertness and effort lift that heaviness.

The guru lists the qualities of tamas.

1.117 Guru to Disciple

sattvaṃ viśuddhaṃ jalavattathāpi | tābhyāṃ militvā saraṇāya kalpate | yatrātmabimbaḥ pratibimbitaḥ san | prakāśayatyarka ivākhilaṃ jaḍam ||

Sattva is pure like water; yet mixed with those two (rajas and tamas) it makes for transmigration. In it the Self is reflected, and like the sun it lights up the whole inert world.

Meaning today and context

A calm, clear mind is like still water: it reflects truth well. Even goodness, mixed with restlessness and dullness, can still keep us bound, so clarity has to be cultivated.

The guru describes sattva: pure like water, it reflects the Self.

1.118 Guru to Disciple

miśrasya sattvasya bhavanti dharmāḥ | tvamānitādyā niyamā yamādyāḥ | śraddhā ca bhaktiśca mumukṣutā ca | daivī ca sampattirasannivṛttiḥ ||

The marks of mixed sattva are humility and the like, the restraints (yama) and observances (niyama), faith, devotion, longing for liberation, the divine qualities, and turning away from what is unreal.

Meaning today and context

Humility, self-discipline, faith, devotion and the wish to be free are signs that the mind is moving toward clarity. They are worth cultivating even before any deep realisation.

The guru lists the qualities of sattva mixed with the other gunas.

1.119 Guru to Disciple

viśuddhasattvasya guṇāḥ prasādaḥ | svātmānubhūtiḥ paramā praśāntiḥ | tṛptiḥ praharṣaḥ paramātmaniṣṭhā | yayā sadānandarasaṃ samṛcchati ||

The marks of pure sattva are serenity, direct experience of one's own Self, supreme peace, contentment, deep joy, and steadiness in the supreme Self, by which one reaches the essence of lasting bliss.

Meaning today and context

A truly clear mind shows itself as quiet joy, contentment and peace that do not depend on outside events. These are the fruits to look for, not excitement or display.

The guru lists the qualities of pure sattva, through which one reaches bliss.

1.120 Guru to Disciple

avyaktametattriguṇairniruktaṃ | tatkāraṇaṃ nāma śarīramātmanaḥ | suṣuptiretasya vibhaktyavasthā | pralīnasarvendriyabuddhivṛttiḥ ||

This unmanifest, described in terms of the three gunas, is called the causal body of the Self. Its own distinct state is deep sleep, in which all activity of the senses and the intellect is dissolved.

Meaning today and context

Deep sleep shows a state where the busy mind is completely switched off, yet we still exist. It hints that we are more than our thinking.

The guru describes the causal body and its state, deep sleep.

1.121 Guru to Disciple

sarvaprakārapramitipraśāntiḥ | bījātmanāvasthitireva buddheḥ | suṣuptiretasya kila pratītiḥ | kiṃcinna vedmīti jagatprasiddheḥ ||

Deep sleep is the complete stilling of every kind of knowing; the intellect simply remains in seed form. The proof of this state is the common experience of everyone: 'I knew nothing.'

Meaning today and context

Every night the whole world of worries goes quiet, and returns on waking. Our problems are held in the mind; when it rests, so do they.

The guru continues on deep sleep: the intellect rests in seed form.

1.122 Guru to Disciple

dehendriyaprāṇamano'hamādayaḥ | sarve vikārā viṣayāḥ sukhādayaḥ | vyomādibhūtānyakhilaṃ ca viśvaṃ | avyaktaparyantamidaṃ hyanātmā ||

Body, senses, prana, mind, ego and the rest, all modifications, objects, pleasure and so on, the elements beginning with space, and the whole universe up to the unmanifest: all this is not the Self.

Meaning today and context

Body, thoughts, feelings and roles all change; whatever changes and can be observed is not the deepest 'I'. This frees us from being defined by any one of them.

The guru sums up: everything from the body to the unmanifest is not-Self.

māyā māyākāryaṃ sarvaṃ mahadādidehaparyantam | asadidamanātmatattvaṃ viddhi tvaṃ marumarīcikākalpam ||

Maya and all that maya produces, from the great principle (mahat) down to the body: know all this to be unreal, not the Self, like a mirage in the desert.

'Unreal' here is about lasting reality, not a reason to neglect one's body, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

A mirage looks like water but cannot quench thirst. The text asks us to stop expecting lasting fulfilment from what keeps changing; it does not ask us to neglect the world we live in.

The guru calls maya and all its effects unreal, like a mirage.

1.124 Guru to Disciple

atha te saṃpravakṣyāmi svarūpaṃ paramātmanaḥ | yadvijñāya naro bandhānmuktaḥ kaivalyamaśnute ||

Now I shall tell you the nature of the supreme Self, knowing which a person is freed from bondage and attains liberation.

Meaning today and context

After clearing away what we are not, the teaching turns to what we are. Knowing oneself, not acquiring something new, is the freedom being offered.

Having described the not-Self, the guru promises to describe the nature of the supreme Self.

1.125 Guru to Disciple

asti kaścitsvayaṃ nityamahaṃpratyayalambanaḥ | avasthātrayasākṣī saṃpañcakośavilakṣaṇaḥ ||

There is something, self-existent and eternal, the ground of the sense of 'I', the witness of the three states, distinct from the five sheaths.

Meaning today and context

Through waking, dreaming and deep sleep, through childhood and old age, something in you has stayed the same. The text points to that steady 'I' beneath all change.

The guru begins describing the Self: the witness of the three states, distinct from the five sheaths.

1.126 Guru to Disciple

yo vijānāti sakalaṃ jāgratsvapnasuṣuptiṣu | buddhitadvṛttisadbhāvamabhāvamahamityayam ||

It knows everything in waking, dream and deep sleep; it knows the presence and the absence of the intellect and its modes; it is this 'I'.

Meaning today and context

You notice when thoughts come and when they go; you know when your mind is blank. That which notices is closer to who you are than any thought.

The guru continues: the Self knows everything in all three states.

1.127 Guru to Disciple

yaḥ paśyati svayaṃ sarvaṃ yaṃ na paśyati kaścana | yaścetayati buddhyādi na tadyaṃ cetayatyayam ||

That which itself sees everything, but which nothing sees; which illumines the intellect and the rest, but which they do not illumine: that is this (Self).

Meaning today and context

The eye cannot see itself; awareness cannot be made an object. Seeking the Self like a thing to be found misses it; it is what is doing the seeking.

The guru continues: the Self sees all but is seen by none.

1.128 Guru to Disciple

yena viśvamidaṃ vyāptaṃ yaṃ na vyāpnoti kiṃcana | ābhārūpamidaṃ sarvaṃ yaṃ bhāntamanubhātyayam ||

That by which this whole universe is pervaded, but which nothing pervades; that which shines, and all this, being only its reflection, shines after it: that is this (Self).

Meaning today and context

Everything we experience is lit by awareness, as objects are lit by the sun. Without that light nothing would appear at all.

The guru continues: the Self pervades all and everything shines after it.

1.129 Guru to Disciple

yasya sannidhimātreṇa dehendriyamanodhiyaḥ | viṣayeṣu svakīyeṣu vartante preritā iva ||

By whose mere presence body, senses, mind and intellect go about their own objects, as if driven by it.

Meaning today and context

The Self does not push or pull; its presence is enough for life to function, like the sun whose light lets the day's work happen.

The guru continues: by the Self's mere presence the body and mind do their work.

1.130 Guru to Disciple

ahaṅkārādidehāntā viṣayāśca sukhādayaḥ | vedyante ghaṭavadyena nityabodhasvarūpiṇā ||

By which, whose nature is eternal knowing, everything from the ego to the body, and objects, pleasures and the rest, are known like a pot.

Meaning today and context

Just as you know a pot is separate from you, you can know your moods, ego and body as things observed. That small distance brings freedom.

The guru continues: the Self knows everything from ego to body as an object.

1.131 Guru to Disciple

eṣo'ntarātmā puruṣaḥ purāṇo | nirantarākhaṇḍasukhānubhūtiḥ | sadaikarūpaḥ pratibodhamātro | yeneṣitā vāgasavaścaranti ||

This is the inner Self, the ancient Person, continuous, undivided experience of bliss, ever of one form, pure awareness, impelled by which speech and the vital breaths move.

Meaning today and context

Beneath changing moods there is a steady presence that the text calls unbroken joy. Touching it even briefly can make us less dependent on outer highs and lows.

The guru names the Self: the inner Self, the ancient Person, unbroken bliss.

1.132 Guru to Disciple

atraiva sattvātmani dhīguhāyāṃ | avyākṛtākāśa uśatprakāśaḥ | ākāśa uccai ravivatprakāśate | svatejasā viśvamidaṃ prakāśayan ||

Right here, in the cave of the intellect, made of sattva, in the unmanifest space, it shines with radiant light; high in that space, like the sun, it shines and by its own light illumines this whole universe.

Meaning today and context

The light we look for is not far away; the text places it within, in the heart of one's own understanding.

The guru says the Self shines within, in the cave of the intellect.

jñātā mano'haṃkṛtivikriyāṇāṃ | dehendriyaprāṇakṛtakriyāṇām | ayo'gnivattānanuvartamāno | na ceṣṭate no vikaroti kiṃcana ||

The knower of the changes of mind and ego, and of the actions of body, senses and prana, seems to take their form like fire in iron, yet it neither acts nor changes in the least.

Meaning today and context

Red-hot iron seems to be fire, but the fire is not iron. In the same way we seem to be our anger or fear, yet the awareness that knows them is not changed by them.

The guru compares the Self to fire in iron: it seems to act but does not.

1.134 Guru to Disciple

na jāyate no mriyate na vardhate | na kṣīyate no vikaroti nityaḥ | vilīyamāne'pi vapuṣyamuṣmin | na līyate kumbha ivāmbaraṃ svayam ||

It is not born, does not die, does not grow or decay, does not change; it is eternal. Even when this body is dissolved, it does not dissolve, just as the space in a pot remains when the pot breaks.

For someone grieving, acknowledge the loss first; the verse does not dismiss mourning. It is about the Self, never an invitation to die. If thoughts of death persist, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

When we fear death or face a loss, this verse offers a deeper sense of self: what we truly are is not destroyed with the body. It is a comfort to reflect on, not a reason to hurry past grief.

The guru says the Self is not born and does not die, like space in a pot.

1.135 Guru to Disciple

prakṛtivikṛtibhinnaḥ śuddhabodhasvabhāvaḥ | sadasadidamaśeṣaṃ bhāsayannirviśeṣaḥ | vilasati paramātmā jāgradādiṣvavasthā- | svahamahamiti sākṣātsākṣirūpeṇa buddheḥ ||

Distinct from nature and its modifications, its very nature pure knowing, without attributes, illumining all this, the gross and the subtle, the supreme Self shines in waking and the other states, directly as 'I, I', as the witness of the intellect.

Meaning today and context

The simple sense 'I am', present in every moment and every state, is the doorway the text points to. It is nearer than any idea about ourselves.

The guru says the supreme Self shines as the witness of the intellect, as 'I, I', in every state.

1.136 Guru to Disciple

With a controlled mind and a clear intellect, know this Self within yourself directly as 'This am I'. Cross the shoreless ocean of samsara whose waves are birth and death; become fulfilled, established as Brahman.

Meaning today and context

Understanding is not enough; the teaching asks for direct recognition in a settled mind. That recognition, not more striving, is what makes life feel fulfilled.

The guru urges the disciple to know the Self directly and cross the ocean of samsara.

1.137 Guru to Disciple

Here, the notion 'I' in what is not the Self is a person's bondage. Born of ignorance, it causes the downpour of the pains of birth and death. Because of it he takes this unreal body as real and as himself, and nourishes, bathes and guards it with objects, like a silkworm with its own threads.

Calling the body unreal is about identity, not self-contempt; it is no reason to neglect health or care. If you feel low about yourself or your body, please reach out: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Like a silkworm wrapping itself in its own thread, we bind ourselves by making the body and its comforts our whole identity. Care for the body is good; making it everything is the trap.

The guru explains bondage: taking the not-Self as 'I'.

1.138 Guru to Disciple

atasmiṃstadbuddhiḥ prabhavati vimūḍhasya tamasā | vivekābhāvādvai sphurati bhujage rajjudhiṣaṇā | tato'narthavrāto nipatati samādāturadhikaḥ | tato yo'sadgrāhaḥ sa hi bhavati bandhaḥ śṛṇu sakhe ||

In the deluded, through tamas, the idea of a thing arises in what it is not; for lack of discrimination the thought of a snake appears in a rope. Then a host of troubles falls on the one who takes it so. Therefore, listen, friend: grasping the unreal is indeed bondage.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from reacting to what we think is there rather than what is. Pausing to look again before reacting can spare a lot of pain.

The guru explains, with the rope and snake, how mistaking the unreal for real is bondage.

akhaṇḍanityādvayabodhaśaktyā | sphurantamātmānamanantavaibhavam | samāvṛṇotyāvṛtiśaktireṣā | tamomayī rāhurivārkabimbam ||

This veiling power, made of tamas, covers the Self, which shines with the power of undivided, eternal, non-dual knowing and has infinite glory, as Rahu covers the disc of the sun.

Meaning today and context

An eclipse does not harm the sun; it only hides it for a while. Our true nature is not damaged by confusion, only hidden.

The guru compares the veiling power to Rahu eclipsing the sun.

When one's own spotless, radiant Self is hidden, a person in delusion takes the body, the not-Self, as 'I'. Then the great projecting power of rajas torments him sorely with the binding fetters of desire, anger and the rest.

Meaning today and context

Once we forget who we are and think we are only the body and its wants, desire and anger take over. Remembering a deeper identity gives room to respond rather than be driven.

The guru describes how, once the Self is hidden, one takes the body as 'I' and is tormented by rajas.

1.141 Guru to Disciple

Seized by the crocodile of great delusion, his knowledge of the Self lost, he himself acts out the many states of the intellect, taking on its qualities; and in the shoreless ocean of samsara, full of the poison of sense objects, this misguided one sinks and rises and wanders, going a wretched way.

Meaning today and context

Caught in confusion, we act out every passing mood as if it were us, rising with good days and sinking with bad ones. Seeing this pattern is the first step out of it.

The guru describes the deluded person drowning and surfacing in the ocean of samsara.

bhānuprabhāsaṃjanitābhrapaṅktiḥ | bhānuṃ tirodhāya vijṛmbhate yathā | ātmoditāhaṃkṛtirātmatattvaṃ | tathā tirodhāya vijṛmbhate svayam ||

As a bank of clouds, produced by the sun's heat, spreads and hides the sun itself, so the ego, arisen from the Self, spreads and hides the truth of the Self.

Meaning today and context

The ego draws its very power from our awareness, then hides it. The clouds pass; the sun was never harmed.

The guru compares the ego hiding the Self to clouds hiding the sun that produced them.

As on a dark day, when dense clouds have swallowed the sun, a fierce, icy gale torments people, so when the Self is covered by unbroken tamas, the fierce projecting power afflicts the deluded mind with many sorrows.

When we cannot see clearly, every worry hits harder, like cold wind on a sunless day. Clearing the inner sky matters more than fighting each gust.

The guru compares the projecting power to an icy storm on a clouded day.

etābhyāmeva śaktibhyāṃ bandhaḥ puṃsaḥ samāgataḥ | yābhyāṃ vimohito dehaṃ matvātmānaṃ bhramatyayam ||

From these two powers alone has a person's bondage come; deluded by them, he takes the body to be himself and wanders.

Meaning today and context

Two forces keep us stuck: not seeing clearly, and the restless activity that follows. Working on both, clarity and calm, is the way out.

The guru concludes that bondage comes from these two powers, veiling and projecting.

bījaṃ saṃsṛtibhūmijasya tu tamo dehātmadhīraṅkuro | rāgaḥ pallavamambu karma tu vapuḥ skandho'savaḥ śākhikāḥ | agrāṇīndriyasaṃhatiśca viṣayāḥ puṣpāṇi duḥkhaṃ phalaṃ | nānākarmasamudbhavaṃ bahuvidhaṃ bhoktātra jīvaḥ khagaḥ ||

Of the tree of worldly existence, ignorance is the seed, the idea that the body is the self is the sprout, attachment the tender leaves, action the water, the body the trunk, the life-breaths the branches, the senses the twigs, sense-objects the flowers, and suffering the fruit, born of many kinds of action and of many kinds; and the individual soul is the bird that eats it here.

Meaning today and context

Suffering does not appear from nowhere; it grows from a root. When we trace our pain back through attachment to the belief 'I am only this body and its story', we find where change can begin.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru pictures worldly existence as a tree, naming each part, with the individual soul as the bird that eats its fruit.

ajñānamūlo'yamanātmabandho | naisargiko'nādirananta īritaḥ | janmāpyayavyādhijarādiduḥkha- | pravāhapātaṃ janayatyamuṣya ||

This bondage to the not-Self, rooted in ignorance, is said to be natural, without beginning and without end. It brings on him a fall into the endless stream of suffering: birth, death, disease, old age and the rest.

Meaning today and context

Our habit of identifying with what we are not feels natural because it is so old. Seeing it as a habit rooted in not-knowing, rather than as fate, is the first step to loosening it.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru explains that bondage to the not-Self is rooted in ignorance and keeps a person falling into a stream of suffering.

nāstrairna śastrairanilena vahninā | chettuṃ na śakyo na ca karmakoṭibhiḥ | vivekavijñānamahāsinā vinā | dhātuḥ prasādena śitena mañjunā ||

It cannot be cut by missiles or weapons, by wind or fire, or by millions of actions, but only by the great sword of discriminating knowledge, sharp and bright, through the grace of the Lord.

Meaning today and context

Some knots cannot be untied by doing more, earning more or trying harder. They loosen only when we see clearly what is true and what is not, and that clarity often comes as a kind of grace.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru says this bondage cannot be cut by force or by any amount of action, only by the sword of discriminating knowledge.

śrutipramāṇaikamateḥ svadharma | niṣṭhā tayaivātmaviśuddhirasya | viśuddhabuddheḥ paramātmavedanaṃ | tenaiva saṃsārasamūlanāśaḥ ||

For one whose mind trusts the scriptures alone as authority, there comes steadiness in his own duty; by that alone his mind is purified; one whose understanding is purified comes to know the supreme Self; and by that alone worldly existence is destroyed, root and all.

'One's own duty' means one's role and responsibilities in life, never a duty fixed by caste or birth.

Meaning today and context

Freedom is not a single leap. Doing one's own responsibilities faithfully cleans the mind, and a clean mind is the ground on which real understanding can grow.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru lays out the ladder to freedom: faith in scripture, steadiness in one's own duty, a purified mind, knowledge of the Self, and the end of worldly bondage.

kośairannamayādyaiḥ pañcabhirātmā na saṃvṛto bhāti | nijaśaktisamutpannaiḥ śaivālapaṭalairivāmbu vāpīstham ||

Covered by the five sheaths, beginning with the sheath of food, the Self does not shine forth, just as the water in a pond is hidden by layers of moss that grow from its own power.

Meaning today and context

What hides our deeper nature is not foreign to us; it grows out of our own life: body, breath, thoughts, opinions. The water is still there under the moss.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru begins the teaching of the five sheaths: the Self is hidden by them as pond water is hidden by moss.

tacchaivālāpanaye samyaksalilaṃ pratīyate śuddham | tṛṣṇāsantāpaharaṃ sadyaḥ saukhyapradaṃ paraṃ puṃsaḥ ||

When the moss is cleared away, the water is seen to be perfectly pure; it takes away thirst and burning heat and gives a person great happiness at once.

Meaning today and context

The peace we look for is not manufactured; it is uncovered. Clearing away what crowds the mind lets something already present refresh us.

In the Vivekachudamani, attributed to Shankaracharya, the guru continues the image: when the moss is cleared, pure water is seen that quenches thirst at once.
