Verses 51–100

1.51 Bhartrihari

tvaṃ rājā vayamapyupāsita-guru-prajñābhimānonnatāḥ | khyātastvaṃ vibhavairyaśāṃsi kavayo dikṣu pratanvanti naḥ | itthaṃ māna-dhanāti-dūramubhayorapyāvayorantaraṃ | yadyasmāsu parāṅmukho'si vayamapyekāntato niḥspṛhāḥ ||

You are a king; we too stand tall in the pride of wisdom gained by serving our teachers. You are famous for your riches; poets spread our fame in every direction. So in honour and wealth the distance between us two is not great. If you turn your face from us, we too want nothing at all from you.

Meaning today and context

Learning and character are a wealth of their own. When someone powerful treats you as small, you need not beg for their approval; you can keep your dignity and simply stop wanting anything from them.

Bhartrihari, speaking as a learned poet, addresses a proud king who has ignored him: each of them has his own kind of greatness.

1.52 Bhartrihari

arthānāmīśiṣe tvaṃ vayamapi ca girāmīśmahe yāvadarthaṃ | śūrastvaṃ vādi-darpa-vyupaśamana-vidhāvakṣayaṃ pāṭavaṃ naḥ | sevante tvāṃ dhanāḍhyā matimalahataye māmapi śrotu-kāmā | mayyapyāsthā na te cettvayi mama nitarāmeva rājannanāsthā ||

You are lord of riches; we too are lords of words, as far as meaning reaches. You are a hero in battle; our skill at quelling the arrogance of debaters never fails. The wealthy wait on you; those who wish to clear the dirt from their minds come to hear me. If you have no regard for me, O king, I have none whatever for you.

Not a licence to look down on anyone. The poet is guarding his own self-respect, not judging others' worth.

Meaning today and context

Different people hold different kinds of power. Respect is a two-way street: you can honour someone's position without bending your own worth to it.

Bhartrihari continues to the king: the king rules wealth, the poet rules words; if the king has no regard for him, he has none for the king.

1.53 Bhartrihari

vayamiha parituṣṭā valkalaistvaṃ dukūlaiḥ | sama iha paritoṣo nirviśeṣo viśeṣaḥ | sa tu bhavatu daridro yasya tṛṣṇā viśālā | manasi ca parituṣṭe ko'rthavānko daridraḥ ||

We are content here with bark garments, you with fine silk. The contentment is the same; the difference makes no difference. Let him be poor whose craving is vast. When the mind is content, who is rich and who is poor?

Meaning today and context

Comparing what we own with what others own keeps us feeling poor. Real poverty is endless wanting; a satisfied mind is rich whatever it has.

Bhartrihari to the king: contentment, not possessions, decides who is rich and who is poor.

1.54 Bhartrihari

phalamalamaśanāya svādu pānāya toyaṃ | kṣitirapi śayanārthaṃ vāsase valkalaṃ ca | nava-dhana-madhupāna-bhrānta-sarvendriyāṇām | avinayamanumantuṃ notsahe durjanānām ||

Fruit is enough for food, sweet water for drink, the earth for a bed, bark for clothing. I cannot bring myself to approve the misconduct of the wicked, whose every sense is reeling from drinking the wine of new wealth.

Not a licence to look down on anyone. The poet is guarding his own self-respect, not judging others' worth.

Meaning today and context

When your real needs are few, you are free not to go along with people who behave badly because of money. Wanting less is what gives you the freedom to say no.

Bhartrihari says simple needs are easily met, so he will not flatter people whose new wealth has gone to their heads.

1.55 Bhartrihari

aśnīmahi vayaṃ bhikṣāmāśāvāso vasīmahi | śayīmahi mahī-pṛṣṭhe kurvīmahi kimīśvaraiḥ ||

We shall eat alms, wear the directions as our clothing, sleep on the bare back of the earth. What have we to do with lords?

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

Whoever needs little from others cannot be controlled by them. The verse is about the freedom that comes from simple wants, not about refusing all help.

Bhartrihari declares his independence from rulers: the barest life is enough for him.

1.56 Bhartrihari

na naṭā na viṭā na gāyakā na ca sabhyetara-vāda-cuñcavaḥ | nṛpamīkṣitumatra ke vayaṃ stana-bhārānamitā na yoṣitaḥ ||

We are not actors, not rakes, not singers, not clever at coarse, uncivil talk, nor are we women bent under the weight of their breasts. Who are we, then, to get to see the king here?

The line about women is satire of court favourites in its time, not a judgement of women; it must never be used to demean anyone.

Meaning today and context

In some places access goes to those who entertain and flatter, not to those with substance. Seeing this clearly can stop us from measuring our worth by whether the powerful let us in.

Bhartrihari mocks the royal court, where only entertainers and flatterers are welcome.

1.58 Bhartrihari

abhuktāyāṃ yasyāṃ kṣaṇamapi na yātaṃ nṛpa-śatair | bhuvastasyā lābhe ka iva bahumānaḥ kṣiti-bhṛtām | tad-aṃśasyāpyaṃśe tad-avayava-leśe'pi patayo | viṣāde kartavye vidadhati jaḍāḥ pratyuta mudam ||

This earth has not gone a single moment unenjoyed by hundreds of kings. What great honour can rulers find in gaining it? And those fools who own only a part of a part of a fragment of it rejoice, when they should rather feel dejected.

Not a judgement of anyone's property disputes or legal rights; it is about the pride we attach to owning things.

Meaning today and context

Land, houses and titles have passed through countless hands before ours and will pass on after. Owning a small share of them is a reason for humility, not for pride.

Bhartrihari continues: the earth has been enjoyed by countless kings, so owning a scrap of it is nothing to be proud of.

1.59 Bhartrihari

mṛt-piṇḍo jala-rekhayā valayitaḥ sarvo'pyayaṃ nanvaṇuḥ | svāṃśīkṛtya sa eva saṅgara-śatai rājñāṃ gaṇā bhuñjate | ye dadyurdadato'thavā kimaparaṃ kṣudrā daridraṃ bhṛśaṃ | dhigdhiktānpuruṣādhamāndhanakaṇānvāñchanti tebhyo'pi ye ||

This whole earth is only a lump of clay ringed by a line of water, surely a mere atom. Kings in their hordes enjoy it after making it their own through hundreds of battles. Petty as they are, they might give, or not give, to the poor; what more? Shame, shame on those lowest of men who beg even from them for grains of wealth.

The scorn is for flattery and greed, not for anyone who asks for help in genuine need. Asking for help is not shameful.

Meaning today and context

What people fight hardest for is often very small seen from a wider view. Bowing to such people for scraps costs more in self-respect than it gains.

Bhartrihari describes the earth as a speck fought over by kings, and scorns those who beg crumbs from such kings.

1.60 Bhartrihari

sa jātaḥ ko'pyāsīnmadana-ripuṇā mūrdhni dhavalaṃ | kapālaṃ yasyoccairvinihitamalaṅkāra-vidhaye | nṛbhiḥ prāṇa-trāṇa-pravaṇa-matibhiḥ kaiścidadhunā | namadbhiḥ kaḥ puṃsāmayamatula-darpa-jvara-bharaḥ ||

There was once someone truly born, whose white skull Shiva, enemy of the love-god, set high on his head as an ornament. But now, what is this unequalled fever of pride in men who are bowed to by a few people whose only thought is to save their own lives?

Meaning today and context

Respect given out of fear or need is not real honour. Being flattered by people who depend on you is no reason to think highly of yourself.

Bhartrihari recalls the legend of a great being whose skull Shiva wears as an ornament, and mocks the pride of men today who are honoured only by those seeking protection.

1.61 Bhartrihari

pareṣāṃ cetāṃsi pratidivasamārādhya bahudhā | prasādaṃ kiṃ netuṃ viśasi hṛdaya kleśa-kalitam | prasanne tvayyantaḥ-svayam-udita-cintāmaṇi-gaṇo | viviktaḥ saṅkalpaḥ kimabhilaṣitaṃ puṣyati na te ||

Heart, why do you wear yourself out, worshipping other people's moods every day in so many ways, trying to win their favour? If you are at peace within, a heap of wish-fulfilling gems rises of itself; your resolve, made free and clear, what wish of yours would it not fulfil?

Meaning today and context

Constantly trying to please others is exhausting and never ends. Peace that comes from within gives more than anyone's approval can.

Bhartrihari speaks to his own heart, which tires itself trying to win others' favour.

1.62 Bhartrihari

paribhramasi kiṃ mudhā kvacana citta viśrāmyatāṃ | svayaṃ bhavati yadyathā bhavati tattathā nānyathā | atītamananusmarannapi ca bhāvya-saṅkalpayann | atarkita-samāgamānanubhavāmi bhogānaham ||

Mind, why do you wander about in vain? Rest somewhere. Whatever comes about of itself, as it comes, so it is, and not otherwise. Not dwelling on the past, not planning the future, I enjoy the experiences that come unlooked for.

Accepting what comes is not giving up on effort or on getting help. Do what is in your hands; if worry is constant, talk to someone, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering is replaying the past and rehearsing the future. Letting the mind rest in what is actually here, and accepting what we cannot control, brings relief.

Bhartrihari tells his restless mind to stop wandering: what will be will be, and he takes what comes.

1.63 Bhartrihari

etasmādviramendriyārtha-gahanādāyāsakādāśraya | śreyo-mārgamaśeṣa-duḥkha-śamana-vyāpāra-dakṣaṃ kṣaṇāt | svātmībhāvamupaihi santyaja nijāṃ kallola-lolāṃ gatiṃ | mā bhūyo bhaja bhaṅgurāṃ bhava-ratiṃ cetaḥ prasīdādhunā ||

Turn back from this exhausting thicket of sense objects. Take the path of the highest good, which can end all sorrow in a moment. Come to your own true nature; give up your restless course, tossed like waves. Do not again court fragile worldly delight. Mind, be at peace now.

Meaning today and context

Chasing one pleasure after another is tiring and never settles us. Turning inward, toward who we really are, is the way the restlessness can finally stop.

Bhartrihari urges his mind to turn away from the tiring maze of sense pleasures and rest in the Self.

1.64 Bhartrihari

mohaṃ mārjaya tāmupārjaya ratiṃ candrārdha-cūḍāmaṇau | cetaḥ svarga-taraṅgiṇī-taṭa-bhuvāmāsaṅgamaṅgīkuru | ko vā vīciṣu budbudeṣu ca taḍil-lekhāsu ca śrīṣu ca | jvālāgreṣu ca pannageṣu ca sarid-vegeṣu ca pratyayaḥ ||

Wipe away delusion; win love for the one who wears the half-moon as his crest jewel. Mind, make your home on the banks of the heavenly river. Who can trust waves, bubbles, streaks of lightning, fortune, the tips of flames, snakes, or the rush of rivers?

Meaning today and context

Wealth and luck are as unsteady as bubbles and lightning. Building life on them alone invites disappointment; anchor yourself in something deeper.

Bhartrihari tells his mind to wipe away delusion and turn to Shiva, since nothing in the world can be relied on.

1.65 Bhartrihari

cetaścintaya mā ramāṃ sakṛdimāmasthāyinīmāsthayā | bhūpāla-bhrukuṭī-kuṭī-viharaṇa-vyāpāra-paṇyāṅganām | kanthā-kañcukinaḥ praviśya bhavana-dvārāṇi vārāṇasī- | rathyā-paṅktiṣu pāṇi-pātra-patitāṃ bhikṣāmapekṣāmahe ||

Mind, do not for a moment think with trust of this fortune, which never stays, a woman for sale whose business is to wander in the hut of a king's frowning brows. Wearing patched cloaks, entering the house doors along the rows of Varanasi's streets, we shall wait for alms to fall into the bowl of our hands.

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms. The image of fortune as a woman for sale is a poetic figure of its time, not a view of women.

Meaning today and context

Wealth that depends on a powerful person's moods can vanish overnight. The verse asks us not to trust it, and to value a simpler life that no one can take away.

Bhartrihari warns his mind not to trust fortune, pictured as a courtesan who moves at the frown of kings, and longs for an ascetic life in Varanasi.

1.66 Bhartrihari

agre gītaṃ sarasa-kavayaḥ pārśvayordākṣiṇātyāḥ | paścāllīlāvalaya-raṇitaṃ cāmara-grāhiṇīnām | yadyastyevaṃ kuru bhava-rasāsvādane lampaṭatvaṃ | no ceccetaḥ praviśa sahasā nirvikalpe samādhau ||

Singing in front, poets of fine taste beside you, southern musicians on either side, behind you the playful jingle of the bracelets of women waving fly-whisks: if you have all this, then by all means be greedy in tasting the world. If not, mind, enter at once the thought-free stillness of samadhi.

Meaning today and context

Most of us will never have every pleasure we imagine. Instead of living in that half-hungry chase, the poet points to a stillness that does not depend on having it all.

Bhartrihari, half in irony, tells his mind: if you truly have every royal pleasure, enjoy it; otherwise, turn at once to meditation.

1.67 Bhartrihari

You have won fortune that yields every desire: so what? You have set your foot on the heads of your enemies: so what? You have pleased your loved ones with riches: so what? Your bodies have lasted for an age: so what?

Meaning today and context

Asking 'and then what?' of each goal shows that none of them, on its own, brings lasting fulfilment. It is a question worth asking before giving your life to any one of them.

Bhartrihari asks, of every great worldly achievement, 'and then what?'

1.68 Bhartrihari

bhaktirbhave maraṇa-janma-bhayaṃ hṛdi-sthaṃ | sneho na bandhuṣu na manmathajā vikārāḥ | saṃsarga doṣa-rahitā vijanā vanāntā | vairāgyamasti kimitaḥ paramarthanīyam ||

Devotion to Shiva; the fear of death and birth kept in the heart; no clinging affection for kin; no stirrings born of desire; forest borders, lonely and free from the faults of company; dispassion: what is there beyond this worth asking for?

'No affection for kin' describes the renunciate ideal, not advice to stop loving or caring for family. Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

The poet's idea of a full life is not more possessions but a mind free of clinging. Even partly, that freedom is something worth wanting.

Bhartrihari lists the marks of real dispassion and asks what more one could want.

1.69 Bhartrihari

Therefore meditate on that Brahman, endless, ageless, supreme, ever unfolding. What use are these false imaginings? Beside it, things like rule over the worlds and their pleasures are mere by-products, prized only by small-minded people.

Meaning today and context

Our daydreams of power and comfort shrink when set beside what is lasting. Spending some attention on the deeper questions puts every ambition in its place.

Bhartrihari concludes that one should meditate on Brahman, beside which even lordship of the worlds is a trifle.

1.70 Bhartrihari

Mind, in your fickleness you plunge into the underworld, leap across the sky, wander around the circle of the directions. Why do you never, even by mistake, remember that pure Brahman, your own true good, by which you would find lasting peace?

Meaning today and context

The mind travels everywhere in a single minute yet rarely turns toward what would settle it. Turning attention inward, even briefly, is the beginning of rest.

Bhartrihari chides his mind for roaming everywhere except toward the one thing that would give it rest.

What use are the Vedas, the smritis, reading the Puranas, vast treatises, the bustle of rites and rituals that reward you with a hut in the village of heaven? Apart from the one thing, entering the state of bliss in one's own Self, which is the fire of the world's end to the whole heavy load of worldly sorrow, all the rest is merchant's business.

Not a dismissal of scripture or worship; the poet means they should lead beyond themselves to inner realisation.

Meaning today and context

Religious practice done to earn rewards is a kind of bargaining. Its real worth lies in whether it leads us to inner freedom and peace.

Bhartrihari says scripture, ritual and learning are like trade unless they lead to the bliss of the Self.

1.72 Bhartrihari

Glorious Meru itself falls, consumed by the fire at the end of an age; the oceans, home of countless sea creatures, dry up; the earth, though held firm by the feet of the mountains, comes to its end. What then to say of the body, as unsteady as the tip of a young elephant's ear?

Meaning today and context

Nothing physical lasts, not even mountains and seas. Remembering this can make us gentler with our time and less anxious to hold on to what must pass.

Bhartrihari reflects that even mountains, oceans and the earth come to an end, so the body is utterly fleeting.

1.73 Bhartrihari

The body shrinks, the gait falters, the row of teeth falls out, sight fails, deafness grows, the mouth drools; relatives pay no heed to his words, his wife no longer looks after him. Alas, how hard! For a man grown old, even his son behaves like an enemy.

Meaning today and context

Old age brings losses of body and sometimes of respect. The verse urges us to prepare inwardly while we can, and it is also a mirror for families: the elders in our homes deserve patience and care.

Bhartrihari describes the miseries of old age, when even family turns away.

1.74 Bhartrihari

Seeing white hair on a man's head, the mark of old age's victory over him, young women leave him and go far away, as from an outcaste's well with a hundred bones set over it.

The 'outcaste's well' reflects the caste prejudice of its time; worth is by conduct, never by birth. The verse is about the poet's own disillusion, not a judgement of women.

Meaning today and context

Attention that depends on youth and looks does not last. Building one's sense of worth on being desired leads to loss; something deeper is needed.

Bhartrihari describes how youthful attraction vanishes when grey hair appears, as a lesson on the emptiness of sensual life.

1.75 Bhartrihari

While this body is healthy and free of disease, while old age is far off, while the senses are unimpaired, while life has not run out, the wise should make great effort for the good of the Self. When the house is already on fire, what use is starting to dig a well?

Meaning today and context

Don't postpone what matters most for 'later'. The time to build inner strength, good habits and meaning is now, while you are well, not in a crisis.

Bhartrihari urges effort for one's highest good while health and strength last, not when it is too late.

Should we live by the river of the gods, practising austerity? Or serve, with humility, wives rich in virtue? Or drink the floods of the scriptures and the nectar of many kinds of poetry? We do not know what to do, in beings whose life lasts only a few blinks of the eye.

Meaning today and context

Faced with a short life and many good paths, it is normal to feel torn. The honesty of the poet's doubt is itself a starting point: the question is how to spend limited time well.

Bhartrihari wonders which path to choose, austerity, family life or learning, when human life lasts only a few blinks.

These rulers are hard to please, their minds as restless as horses; and we have large desires, our minds set on some great reward. Old age takes the body, death takes this dear life. Friend, for the wise there is no other good in the world except tapas.

Tapas means disciplined effort, not punishing the body. Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

When honour fades, wealth is lost, those who came asking go away empty-handed, kinsmen dwindle, servants leave and youth slowly slips away, this alone befits the wise: to live somewhere in a grove on the slopes of a Himalayan cave, whose rocks are purified by the waters of the Ganga.

The poet doesn't deny that life is beautiful. Seeing that it all passes changes how we hold it: we can enjoy without gripping, and stop expecting any of it to complete us.

Bhartrihari lists the loveliest things in life and says none of them holds the mind once it has seen impermanence.

Detachment does not mean pretending comforts and love are worthless. It means seeing how unsteady they are, so we stop building our whole life on them.

Bhartrihari explains why the wise leave pleasures behind: not because they are not pleasant, but because they flicker and pass.

Bhartrihari laments that in all the worlds he has never met anyone who can truly tame the mind.

1.82 Bhartrihari

yadetatsvacchandaṃ viharaṇamakārpaṇyamaśanaṃ | sahāryaiḥ saṃvāsaḥ śrutamupaśamaika-vrata-phalam | mano manda-spandaṃ bahirapi cirasyāpi vimṛśan | na jāne kasyaiṣā pariṇatirudārasya tapasaḥ ||

This roaming at my own will; food eaten without humiliation; living among noble companions; learning whose one fruit is the vow of calm; a mind that stirs only slowly even toward outer things: even after long reflection I do not know of what noble austerity this is the ripening.

Meaning today and context

Freedom, dignity, good company, learning that brings calm and a quiet mind are real riches. Noticing them and feeling grateful is itself a kind of contentment.

Bhartrihari wonders what great austerity in a past life has earned him his present free and peaceful life.

1.83 Bhartrihari

My heart's desires have worn out, and that youth is gone; alas, the gifts of my limbs have borne no fruit, for want of those who could value them. Mighty Time, the unforgiving Ender, is coming on fast. What is fitting now? Ah, I know: there is no other refuge than the two feet of Shiva, destroyer of desire.

Meaning today and context

When ambitions fade, youth passes and our gifts go unrecognised, it can feel like the end. The poet finds that turning to the divine, or to what is lasting, gives a refuge that disappointment cannot touch.

Bhartrihari, feeling his hopes and youth spent and Death approaching, finds his only refuge at Shiva's feet.

maheśvare vā jagatāmadhīśvare | janārdane vā jagad-antarātmani | na vastu-bheda-pratipattirasti me | tathāpi bhaktistaruṇendu-śekhare ||

Between Maheshvara, supreme lord of the worlds, and Janardana, the inner Self of the universe, I see no difference in substance. Even so, my devotion is to the one who wears the young moon on his head.

Meaning today and context

One can love a particular form of the divine without thinking other forms are lesser. Devotion is personal; truth is one.

Bhartrihari says he sees no real difference between Shiva and Vishnu, yet his heart's devotion is to Shiva.

On some sandbank of the heavenly river, its surface white with spreading moonlight, sitting at ease through nights when all sound has fallen silent, weary of the sprawl of worldly life, crying aloud 'Shiva, Shiva, Shiva', when shall we reach that state where tears well up within and overflow?

Meaning today and context

Sometimes the heart longs simply to be still somewhere quiet and pour itself out in prayer. That longing is itself a form of devotion.

Bhartrihari longs for moonlit nights on the banks of the Ganga, crying out to Shiva in tears.

Having given away all we own, our hearts full of fresh compassion, remembering how the course of fate in this world ends in misery, we shall pass the nights, lit by the rays of the full autumn moon, in a holy forest, with meditation on Hara's feet our only refuge.

Not advice to give away everything or leave home; provide for your dependants first. Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

Generosity and compassion loosen our grip on possessions, and quiet reflection steadies the heart. Both can be practised in ordinary life.

Bhartrihari imagines giving away everything and spending autumn nights in a holy forest, meditating on Shiva's feet.

When shall I, living in Varanasi on the bank of the immortal river, wearing only a loincloth, my folded hands raised above my head, crying out 'O Lord of Gauri, destroyer of Tripura, Shambhu, three-eyed one, be gracious!', pass my days as if they were a moment?

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

When the heart is absorbed in what it loves, time passes lightly. The poet longs for days so full of devotion that they fly by.

Bhartrihari longs to live in Varanasi on the Ganga's bank, calling on Shiva until days pass like moments.

Having bathed in the waters of the Ganga and worshipped you, Lord, with pure flowers and fruits, fixing my meditation on the one to be meditated on, at the foot of a rock-couch in a mountain cave, content in the Self, living on fruit, devoted to my teacher's words: when, by your grace, O enemy of Kama, shall I be freed from the misery born of serving a man whose hands and feet are just like mine?

Not advice to quit work without means. Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

Depending on someone no greater than ourselves, and bending to their will, wears down the spirit. Inner freedom, built on devotion, contentment and guidance, is what the poet longs for.

Bhartrihari prays to Shiva for the day he will be freed from the misery of serving other men.

Bhartrihari prays to Shiva to become a solitary, desireless ascetic who can uproot karma.

For yogis who make their hand the bowl, are content with alms that are pure by nature, sit down wherever they happen to be, look upon the world again and again as so much straw, and who, even before leaving the body, touch the awareness of unbroken supreme bliss: for them some path, easily found by Shiva's grace, will open.

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Contentment with little and a light hold on the world make room for a deep joy that does not wait for some later heaven.

Bhartrihari describes the bliss that, by Shiva's grace, comes to yogis who live on alms and see the world as straw.

A loincloth worn thin and torn in a hundred places, a patched cloak just the same; freedom from worry; food from alms, depending on no one; sleep in a cremation ground or a forest; roaming freely with no one to check you; a mind always deeply calm; steadiness in the great festival of yoga: if one has these, what use is a kingdom of the three worlds?

Meaning today and context

Peace of mind and freedom from worry are worth more than any amount of power. Whatever we own, it is the calm within that we are really seeking.

Bhartrihari says that if one has the ascetic's freedom and inner calm, a kingdom of the three worlds is worthless.

brahmāṇḍaṃ maṇḍalī-mātraṃ kiṃ lobhāya manasvinaḥ | śapharī-sphuritenābdhiḥ kṣubdho na khalu jāyate ||

The whole universe is a mere little disc; how can it stir greed in a person of large mind? The ocean is surely not churned up by the flick of a tiny fish.

Meaning today and context

A large, settled mind is not shaken by small temptations or provocations. Growing in depth is the best protection against being pushed around by petty wants.

Bhartrihari says that for a person of great mind even the whole universe is too small to tempt.

Mother Lakshmi, serve someone else; do not long for me. Those who crave pleasures are in your power; what are you to those who desire nothing? Now we wish to live only on alms, in bowls made from freshly stitched palasha leaves, made pure.

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Money holds power only over those who crave it. Wanting less is a way of becoming free of its grip, even while one still earns and uses it.

'Is this an outcaste? Or a twice-born? Or a shudra, or an ascetic? Or some lord of yogis, his mind refined by discernment of truth?' Spoken about in this way by people loud with their guesses and gossip, yogis go their way, neither angry nor pleased.

The caste labels are the gossips' words; the verse shows them as meaningless to the wise. Worth is by conduct, never by birth.

People will label and judge you, sometimes kindly, sometimes not. Not being moved either by insult or by praise gives a quiet freedom: you keep walking your own path.

Bhartrihari describes yogis who walk on unmoved while passers-by argue about who or what they are.

The Creator gave snakes their food, the air, harmless and won without effort; beasts eat shoots of grass and lie content on the ground. But for human beings, whose minds are able to cross the ocean of worldly life, he made a livelihood such that, in chasing it, all their gifts are forever used up.

Meaning today and context

We have minds capable of the highest understanding, yet spend almost all of them earning a living. The verse asks us to keep some of our best energy for what truly matters.

Bhartrihari contrasts the effortless food given to snakes and beasts with the exhausting livelihood humans chase.

Seated in lotus posture on a Himalayan rock by the bank of the Ganga, gone into the sleep of yoga by the practice of meditation on Brahman: will those good days ever come for me, when old deer, without fear, rub their bodies against mine?

Deep meditation is best learned with a qualified teacher; it can surface difficult experiences. If you have trauma or severe distress, practise with guidance; Tele-MANAS 14416.

The image of deer trusting a still meditator captures a mind so calm it frightens no one. Even a little of that stillness changes how we are with others.

Bhartrihari longs for days of deep meditation on the Ganga's bank, so still that old deer rub against his body without fear.

Those whose hand is a pure bowl, whose food is the never-failing alms gathered by wandering, whose garment is the wide ten directions, whose steady bed is the vast earth, content within, their hearts matured by embracing non-attachment, who have thrown off every entanglement of wretched dependence: they are blessed, and they uproot their karma.

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

The ideal here is freedom from neediness and dependence. In ordinary life, the same spirit shows as being content, not clinging, and not living at others' mercy.

Bhartrihari praises the renunciates who live with nothing yet are content, and so uproot their karma.

The poet ends with gratitude to the elements that made and sustained him, treating them as family. It invites us to see our bodies and lives as gifts of the world around us, and to meet endings with thanks rather than fear.

In the closing verse Bhartrihari takes leave of the five elements as his family, as he merges into Brahman.
