In the body, the hard element is held to be of earth and the fluid of water; digestion, movement and [inner] space would arise from fire, air and ether.
Meaning today and context
The body is made of the same stuff as the world around it: earth, water, warmth, breath and space. Seeing it this way is not contempt for the body; it loosens the habit of thinking 'this bundle of matter is all I am'.
Shankaracharya opens the chapter 'Made of Earth' by listing what the body is built from: the five elements. The point, developed through the chapter, is that everything so built is an object, not the Self that knows it.
ghrāṇādīni tadarthāśca pṛthivyādiguṇāḥ kramāt | rūpālokavadiṣṭaṃ hi sajātīyārthamindriyam ||
The nose and the other [senses], and their objects, are qualities of earth and the other [elements], in order; for a sense is accepted as having an object of its own kind, as [the eye, which is of fire, grasps] colour [through] light.
Meaning today and context
Even our senses are part of the material world, built to meet things of their own kind. Seeing, hearing and smelling are processes of nature; the one who knows that they are happening is a further question the chapter is leading to.
Continuing the analysis of the body, Shankaracharya matches each sense with its element: a sense grasps only what is of its own kind.
buddhyarthānyāhuretāni vākpāṇyādīni karmaṇe | tadvikalpārthamantasthaṃ mana ekādaśaṃ bhavet ||
These [five] are said to serve knowing; speech, hands and the rest serve action. Within, the mind, the eleventh, serves to deliberate over them.
Meaning today and context
The mind is counted among the instruments, alongside hands and eyes. A thought that weighs 'this or that?' is a tool at work, not the deepest you; it can be used well without being mistaken for oneself.
Shankaracharya completes the list of instruments: five senses of knowing, five organs of action, and the mind as the eleventh.
The intellect serves to decide, and it experiences all objects; the knower, called the Self, always makes it manifest by the light that is its own nature.
Meaning today and context
Deciding, judging and concluding are the work of the intellect. Behind even our clearest decisions is a plain awareness that lights them up and is not itself one more decision.
Shankaracharya distinguishes the intellect (buddhi), which decides, from the knower, the Self, whose own light makes the intellect's experience possible.
Just as light that reveals [a thing] takes on the form of what it reveals, and though mixed with it remains unmixed, so the knower is always [with regard to] the cognitions.
Meaning today and context
Light falling on a red cloth looks red, yet the light is not dyed. Awareness looks angry in anger and sad in sadness, yet it is not stained by them; the mood colours the moment, not the one who knows it.
Shankaracharya uses the image of light to show how the knower can appear to take the shape of every thought while remaining untouched by any of them.
As a lamp, standing still and without effort, lights up everything that comes within its reach, so the knower sees the cognitions that arise in the form of sound and the rest.
Meaning today and context
You do not have to strain to be aware; awareness is already there, like a lamp that lights whatever passes. Thoughts, sounds and feelings come and go in front of it, and the lamp neither chases them nor is moved by them.
Shankaracharya gives the image of the lamp: the knower witnesses whatever comes into the mind without effort and without moving.
The intellect has come to take the aggregate of body and senses as the Self, and is lit by the eternal light of the Self; [it is this intellect that] pleasure and the rest qualify.
Meaning today and context
Pleasure and pain land on the mind that has identified with the body; that is why they feel like 'mine'. Seeing the mechanism does not stop pain, but it shows where the sense of being swallowed by it comes from.
Shankaracharya explains how pleasure and pain come to seem one's own: they colour the intellect, which has taken the body as the Self and is lit by the Self's light.
śiroduḥkhādinātmānaṃ duḥkhyasmīti hi paśyati | draṣṭānyo duḥkhino dṛśyāddraṣṭṛtvacca na duḥkhyasau ||
Because of a headache and the like, one sees oneself as 'I am in pain'. [But] the seer is other than the one in pain, because [that one] is seen; and because he is the seer, he is not in pain.
The verse is about who one is, not a reason to ignore pain. A headache or any illness still needs rest, care and medical treatment; seeing oneself as the witness can help one bear pain, not replace care.
Meaning today and context
When you notice 'I am hurting', something is noticing the hurt. The pain is real and needs care, but there is a part of you that knows the pain without being made of it; resting there can make pain less overwhelming.
Shankaracharya takes a plain example, a headache, to separate the seer from the pain that is seen.
[Objection:] He would be in pain because of the notion 'I am in pain', or because he sees the one in pain. [Reply:] No. [Only] what is compounded with limbs and the like is in pain; the seer is in no way the owner of pain.
Not a reason to dismiss anyone's suffering, one's own or another's. Pain, illness and distress need care and treatment; if distress feels unbearable, call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Watching pain is not the same as being pain. Even the thought 'I am suffering' is something observed; that small gap is where steadiness can begin.
Shankaracharya answers an objection: surely the seer suffers, since it has the notion 'I am in pain' or since it sees the one in pain?
cakṣurvatkarmakartṛtvaṃ syāccennānekameva tat | saṃhataṃ ca tato nātmā draṣṭṛtvātkarmatāṃ vrajet ||
If [it is said that the Self], like the eye, can be both object and agent, no: that [eye] is manifold and compounded. Therefore the Self, because it is the seer, cannot become an object.
Meaning today and context
You can look at your thoughts, body and feelings, but you can never put the looker in front of you as one more thing. That is why searching for the Self like an object always fails.
Against an opponent who says the Self, like the eye, can be both the agent and the object of an act, Shankaracharya argues that the Self, being the seer, can never become something seen.
If it is held that the Self too is manifold, having knowledge, effort and the rest, no; since its one quality is knowing, like light, it cannot be its own object.
Meaning today and context
Awareness is simple: it only knows. It is not a bundle of parts where one part could inspect another, which is why it stays the same behind every changing experience.
Shankaracharya answers the Nyaya-Vaisheshika view that the Self has many qualities (knowledge, effort and so on) and so could act on itself.
Just as light, though it illumines [things], does not illumine itself, so too, even if there were a distinction [within it], the knower, being uniform, does not see itself [as an object].

A torch does not need another torch to show that it is on. Awareness is evident by being aware; it does not have to be found or proved by looking at it.
Shankaracharya continues: even granting some distinction within it, the knower cannot see itself, just as light does not light itself up.
yaddharmā yaḥ padārtho na tasyaiveyātsa karmatām | na hyātmānaṃ dahatyagnistathā naiva prakāśayet ||
A thing cannot become the object of the very property it has; fire does not burn itself, and in the same way [light] does not illumine [itself].
Meaning today and context
Fire does not burn itself; the eye does not see itself. The knower likewise is never one of the things known, so it cannot be damaged by what it knows.
Shankaracharya states the general rule behind the argument: nothing can be the object of its own nature.
By this very [argument], the intellect's grasping itself by itself is refuted. Nor does [one] part [grasping another] fit, because [the parts] are the same and [cognition] is undivided.
Meaning today and context
A thought cannot be its own witness. The fact that thoughts are known at all points to a knower beyond them, which is why we can step back from even our most convincing thoughts.
Shankaracharya turns the same rule against the Buddhist view that cognition knows itself (self-awareness of the intellect), and against splitting it into a knowing part and a known part.
In the same way, emptiness too does not hold: it has been said that the intellect is seen by another, like a pot; and [something] is established before conceptualising.

However empty or numb one feels, the emptiness is itself known. There is always a knower present before any idea about it, including the idea 'there is nothing'.
Shankaracharya rejects the Buddhist doctrine of emptiness (shunyata): the intellect is seen by another, as a pot is, and something must already be there before any conceptual thought.

What comes before conceptualising surely exists, and is free of conceptualisation, since it is the cause from which conceptualising arises, if indeed it is its cause.

Before every label and story there is simple presence. Labels come from it and fade back into it; it is there in the quiet between thoughts.
Shankaracharya continues against emptiness: what comes before all conceptual thought must exist, since it is what gives rise to thought.
Ignorance is the root of [all] imagining and what governs transmigration. Abandoning it, one should know oneself as the supreme Brahman, free, ever without fear.
Meaning today and context
Much of our fear comes from the stories we spin about who we are and what might happen to us. Seeing through the root misunderstanding, that I am only this fragile body and history, brings a fearlessness no circumstance can give or take.
Shankaracharya names the root of bondage and the way out: ignorance generates all imagining and drives the round of birth and death; letting it go, one knows oneself as Brahman.
Waking and dream, and their seed called deep sleep, which is made of darkness: since each is absent in the others, [they are] not [real]. One should let go of this triad.
Meaning today and context
Your waking self, your dream self and the blankness of deep sleep all come and go, yet you are there through all of them. What stays through every state is closer to who you are than any one state.
Shankaracharya applies the teaching to the three states of experience: waking, dream and deep sleep are each absent in the others, so none is the Self.
From the mixing together of the Self, the intellect, the mind, the eye, light, the object and the rest, the delusion arises that action belongs to the Self, because [all these] activities occur together.

Any action is a meeting of many factors: body, senses, mind, circumstances. The heavy sense that 'I alone did this' is a blur of them all; seeing this can ease both pride in success and crushing self-blame, without excusing us from responsibility.
Shankaracharya explains where the sense of 'I am the doer' comes from: the Self, intellect, mind, eye, light and object are all present together in every act, and their functions get blended.

Careful sorting of what does what is part of the practice: movement belongs to one level, perceiving to another, knowing to yet another. The clearer the sorting, the less we pin every event on the Self.

Shankaracharya sorts out which function belongs to which instrument: blinking belongs to the vital air, not to the eye; likewise the mind and intellect, whose nature is to illumine, do not themselves move.

Wanting, planning and deciding are activities of the inner instruments. They can be watched, adjusted and improved, and none of them defines the one who watches.
Continuing the analysis, Shankaracharya assigns intention to the mind and decision to the intellect, and says all of it is only imagined in the Self.
The senses see within the limits of their locations; the intellect has become one with them; and so the knower, seeing that [intellect], appears as though he were only the size of the body.

We feel we live inside a small body behind the eyes. That sense of being cramped into a body is how the senses are arranged, not the measure of who we are; remembering this can soften fear of illness, ageing and death.
Shankaracharya explains why the all-pervading knower seems to be confined to the body: the intellect identifies with the senses, which work at fixed places in the body.

Shankaracharya first states the rival view fairly before answering it. The flame image is a real insight into how fast the mind changes; the disagreement that follows is about whether anything stays behind the changes.
Shankaracharya states the Buddhist opponent's view before refuting it: the mind is only a stream of momentary events, its sameness an illusion like a flame's, and its extinction is the goal.

A transition in a technical debate between Indian schools of philosophy about whether objects exist outside the mind.
Shankaracharya begins his refutation of the Buddhist schools, both those that accept external objects and those (Vijnanavada) that accept only cognition.
Because cognition takes the form of an external [object], and because it lasts [only] a moment, there would never be memory; and being momentary, the intellect could never lay down an impression anywhere.

The argument: that we remember at all shows something persists through the changing moments of the mind.
Shankaracharya argues against Buddhist momentariness: if each cognition lasts only an instant, memory becomes impossible.
And since there is no substrate [for impressions] either, [they would be] equal [for all] and without a cause; or, if there were a stable [substrate], momentariness would be lost, which is not what [you] accept.

A step in the debate: habits and memories need something that lasts to belong to.
Shankaracharya presses the argument against Buddhist momentariness: without a lasting substrate, impressions have nowhere to rest; with one, momentariness is given up.
And since cessation is achieved without effort, the teaching of means [to it] is pointless; and since [cessation] is complete in each single [moment], it would depend on nothing else.

The point in the debate: a path to freedom only makes sense if there is someone who stays to walk it.
Shankaracharya argues that on the Buddhist view the spiritual path becomes pointless: if every moment ceases by itself, extinction needs no effort.
If dependence is accepted even between different [moments], let it be accepted for another person's stream as well. And in which momentary [entity], serving all purposes, [would dependence lie]? Even so, there is no dependence on anything else.

Shankaracharya continues against Buddhist momentariness: if separate moments can depend on each other, one person's stream could equally depend on another's.
[Only two things] arising at the same time can be connected with each other; and only what is formed through such connection is able to look to another.

Shankaracharya adds that momentary events could relate only if they arose at the same time; one moment cannot look to another that has already vanished.

Freedom is not being wiped out; it is losing a mistake. When a rope stops looking like a snake, the rope is still there; when false beliefs about yourself drop, you are still there, only lighter.
Shankaracharya contrasts the Advaita idea of liberation, the removal of a false superimposition, with the Buddhist idea of total extinction, which leaves no one to be liberated.
asti tāvatsvayaṃ nāma jñānaṃ vātmānyadeva vā | bhāvābhāvajñatastasya nābhāvastvadhigamyate ||
There certainly exists something called the self, whether [you call it] knowledge or something other [than knowledge]. Since it knows both existence and non-existence, its own non-existence is never known.
Meaning today and context
You can doubt almost everything, but not the one who is doubting. Even the thought 'I do not exist' needs someone there to think it.
Against the Buddhist denial of a self, Shankaracharya argues that the knower of both existence and non-existence cannot itself be known as non-existent.
That by which non-existence is known must be existent. If it were not, the world would be unable to know existence and non-existence, and that is not accepted.

Even absence, loss and emptiness are known by someone present. The knower is the one thing that is never missing from any experience.
Shankaracharya completes the argument for the existence of the knower against the Buddhist no-self view.
What is accepted as prior to the conceptual division 'existent', 'non-existent', 'both existent and non-existent': that is non-dual, because it is uniform, and eternal; everything else is conceptualised.
Meaning today and context
Our arguments about what exists and what does not all happen inside awareness. That which is there before every such argument is the one reality Advaita points to.
Shankaracharya identifies the non-dual reality: what is there before every conceptual division into 'is', 'is not' and 'both'.
Duality should be accepted as unreal, like what is seen in a dream, because it arises from imagining; and because it did not exist before; and because it is conceived [variously] as existent, non-existent and so on.

Much of what divides us, mine and yours, success and failure, is built by the mind, the way a dream builds a whole world. Seeing this lightly, without dismissing real responsibilities, can take the sting out of comparison and rivalry.

Shankaracharya gives reasons why duality is unreal: it arises from imagining, like a dream, did not exist before, and is open to every kind of conflicting description.

Meaning today and context
Shankaracharya grounds the argument in the Upanishads and the Gita: names and forms change like shapes of clay, while the clay remains. Clinging to the shapes alone is what keeps us circling 'from death to death'.
Shankaracharya cites scripture for the unreality of change: the Chandogya's 'a matter of words', the Katha/Brihadaranyaka's 'from death to death', and the Gita's 'my maya'.
For this very reason it is pure, being distinct from [all] conceptualisation. Therefore the Self is neither to be acquired nor to be given up; unlike other things, it is not imagined.

Shankaracharya draws the conclusion: the Self, being unlike anything conceptualised, is pure, and cannot be gained or lost.
Just as there is no darkness in the sun, because its very nature is light, so in the Self there is no ignorance, because its very nature is eternal awareness.

Confusion and dark moods pass through the mind, but they never reach the awareness that sees them, any more than night reaches the sun. At your core you are not broken or ignorant; clarity is your nature, waiting to be recognised.

Shankaracharya closes this step of the argument with the image of the sun: ignorance can no more belong to the Self than darkness to the sun.

In the chapter on the body 'made of earth', Shankaracharya has just said ignorance cannot belong to the Self, which is ever-awareness. He now adds that the Self cannot pass from one state into another.

Shankaracharya draws the consequence for liberation: it cannot be a new condition the Self enters, as some schools hold.

Whatever depends on conditions can be lost when the conditions change. Your basic being does not depend on success, approval or circumstance, so it cannot be acquired or thrown away.
Shankaracharya explains why one's own nature, unlike union and separation, cannot be lost.
Because it is the very nature of everything, it cannot be given up, since it is not other [than oneself]; nor can it be grasped. Hence it is eternal, because it is not an object and not something separate.

You cannot step away from yourself, and you cannot hold yourself up as an object to inspect. Looking for the Self like a thing to be found is the mistake; it is what is doing the looking.
The argument continues: the Self, being the nature of everything, can neither be dropped nor grasped.
And because everything exists for the sake of the Self, the Self alone is eternal and absolute. Therefore one who knows [what] liberation [is] should give up all actions together with their means.
'Give up all actions' means not relying on action as the means to liberation; it is not advice to abandon family, work, duties or medical care.

No ritual or achievement can produce what you already are. The giving up here is of action as a way to get freedom, not of one's work and care for others.
Shankaracharya concludes that, the Self alone being eternal, one who knows what liberation is gives up action as a means to it.
'Gaining the Self is the highest gain': so say scripture and reasoning. Gaining any other self is no gain at all. Therefore one should give up [taking as oneself] what is not the Self.
Giving up 'what is not the Self' means not mistaking body, roles or possessions for who you are; it is not a reason to neglect your body, family or work.

Shankaracharya states what is truly worth gaining.
[In the Sāṃkhya view] a disturbance of the equilibrium of the guṇas is not possible, because ignorance and the like are [then] dormant, and no other cause [for the disturbance] is admitted.

Shankaracharya turns to refute the Sāṃkhya account of bondage and creation, in which the three guṇas of primal matter (pradhāna) fall out of balance to start the world.

Whatever you have done or suffered has not stained what you are at root. Mistakes and hurts belong to the life you live; they are real and can be dealt with, but they are not your essence.
Having refuted the rival schools, Shankaracharya returns to his own position: bondage never truly touches the Self.
sūkṣmaikāgocarebhyaśca na lipyata iti śruteḥ | evaṃ tarhi na mokṣo'sti bandhābhāvātkathaṃcana ||
And by the scripture that says [the Self] 'is not stained' by the [faults of the] subtle, the one, the unreachable [world], [it is free]. [Objection:] Then there is no liberation in any way at all, since there is no bondage.
Meaning today and context
A fair question: if you were never bound, what is there to be freed from? The next verses answer that the bondage is a misunderstanding, and freedom is its ending.
Shankaracharya adds a further scripture, then raises the natural objection that if there is no bondage, there can be no liberation either.
[Objection:] Then the scripture would be pointless. [Reply:] No, a delusion is admitted in the intellect. That [delusion] is bondage, and liberation is its destruction, just as it has been stated, and not otherwise.
Meaning today and context
What binds us is a mistaken understanding of who we are, not a chain on the Self. So the remedy is clear seeing, and the teaching has real work to do.
The objector continues, and Shankaracharya answers: bondage is a delusion in the intellect, and liberation is its removal.
Lit up by the light of the Self, which is awareness, the intellect thinks that awareness is in itself, and that there is no other knower. This delusion belongs to the intellect.
Meaning today and context
The thinking mind shines with a borrowed light and believes it is the one who knows. Noticing that thoughts are seen, rather than being the seer, loosens their grip.
Shankaracharya describes the delusion itself: the intellect takes the awareness that lights it for its own.
Because awareness is the very nature of the Self, it is always figuratively attributed to that [intellect]. And this non-discrimination, which has no beginning, is itself saṃsāra; nothing else is admitted [as saṃsāra].
Meaning today and context
The trouble is not the world but confusing the knower with the known, the Self with the mind's states. Learning to tell them apart is where relief begins.
mokṣastannāśa eva syānnānyathānupapattitaḥ | yeṣāṃ vastvantarāpattirmokṣo nāśastu tairmataḥ ||
Liberation is simply the destruction of that [non-discrimination], and nothing else, since nothing else is tenable. Those for whom liberation means becoming some other thing in effect hold it to be destruction [of the self].
Meaning today and context
Freedom is not becoming someone else; it is the end of a misunderstanding. You do not have to turn into a different person to be at peace.
Shankaracharya defines liberation and contrasts it with the views of other schools.
In the same way, [liberation as] another state is not tenable, because [the Self] is changeless. If it changed, it would have parts, and then it would perish, like a pot.
Meaning today and context
Anything assembled from parts can come apart. The Self is not put together, and so freedom is not a new arrangement of it.
Shankaracharya again rules out liberation as a change of state.
tasmādbhrāntirato'nyā hi bandhamokṣādikalpanāḥ | sāṃkhyakāṇādabauddhānāṃ mīmāṃsāhatakalpanāḥ ||
Therefore the other notions of bondage, liberation and the rest are mere delusion: the worthless notions of the Sāṃkhyas, the followers of Kaṇāda, the Buddhists and the Mīmāṃsakas.
This is a philosophical debate of its time between schools; it is not a licence to belittle anyone's faith or tradition.

A sharp verdict in a debate between schools of his time; its lasting point is that how we understand freedom shapes how we seek it.
Shankaracharya dismisses the rival schools' accounts of bondage and liberation.
api nindopapatteśca yānyato'nyāni cetyataḥ | tyaktvāto hyanyaśāstroktīrmatiṃ kuryāddṛḍhāṃ budhaḥ ||
And because censure of them is justified, and of the others besides these, therefore the wise person should set aside the statements of other doctrines and make his understanding firm.
This is a philosophical debate of its time between schools; it is not a licence to belittle anyone's faith or tradition.

Beyond the polemic, a practical note: a seeker who keeps sampling every view never settles; at some point one must commit to a path and go deep.
Shankaracharya concludes the polemic and urges the student to settle his mind.
Putting faith and devotion first, giving up all crookedness, [let him make his understanding firm] in the true meaning of Vedānta alone, and likewise in the view of Vyāsa.
Meaning today and context
Learning about the deepest things needs trust, love and honesty with oneself more than cleverness. Crookedness, using teachings to win arguments or flatter oneself, blocks understanding.
Continuing the previous verse: the spirit in which the student should hold the teaching.
Thus the notions of the dualists and the doctrines that deny a Self have been refuted by reasoning, so that seekers of liberation, freed from doubts raised by other doctrines, may stand firm on the path of knowledge.
This is a philosophical debate of its time between schools; it is not a licence to belittle anyone's faith or tradition.

The aim of the argument is not victory but steadiness: a seeker troubled by doubts can find calm when the doubts are honestly answered.
Shankaracharya states the purpose of the chapter's refutations.
Having rightly gained this knowledge, which is its own witness, utterly pure, the opposite of all mental constructions, and non-dual, if one becomes certain [of it], one is free of all ties and attains everlasting peace.
Meaning today and context
Peace comes not from more experiences but from becoming certain about what you are: the awareness that needs no proof. Doubt keeps reopening the wound; clear knowing closes it.
Shankaracharya describes the fruit of right knowledge.
This is the supreme secret, the highest refuge. Those free of faults and without pride should examine it and always set their minds on straightforwardness. For no one who sees the truth thinks in terms of 'mine' and 'another's' [doctrine].
Meaning today and context
Truth is not a team to belong to. Approaching it without pride, honestly and simply, matters more than defending 'my' view against 'theirs'.
Shankaracharya says how this teaching should be approached.
anekajanmāntarasaṃcitairnaro vimucyate'jñānanimittapātakaiḥ | idaṃ viditvā paramaṃ hi pāvanaṃ na lipyate vyoma iveha karmabhiḥ ||
A person is freed from the sins piled up over many births, sins that arise from ignorance. Having known this, the supreme purifier, he is no longer stained by actions here, just as the sky [is not stained].
Freedom from past 'sins' through knowledge is not a licence to excuse harm or avoid making amends to people one has hurt.
Meaning today and context
The weight we carry from the past rests on a mistaken sense of who we are. Seeing clearly does not undo what happened, but it frees you from being defined by it, as the sky is untouched by the clouds passing through it.
Shankaracharya describes the purifying power of this knowledge.
This should always be given, again and again, to a seeker of liberation whose mind is calm, whose senses are mastered, whose faults are gone, who acts as instructed, who is endowed with good qualities, and who always follows [the teacher].
The qualified student is defined by conduct and sincerity, never by birth or caste. 'Following the teacher' is not a reason to accept abuse or exploitation from anyone.
Meaning today and context
Readiness for deep teaching is about character, not status: a settled mind, self-control and sincerity. Anyone can cultivate these.
Shankaracharya states who should receive this teaching.
parasya dehe na yathābhimānitā parasya tadvatparamārthamīkṣya ca | idaṃ hi vijñānamatīva nirmalaṃ saṃprāpya mukto'tha bhavecca sarvataḥ ||
Just as one has no sense of 'I' in another person's body, in the same way, having seen the highest truth of the Supreme and gained this utterly pure knowledge, one would be free in every respect.

You can see someone else's pain or ageing clearly without it shaking your sense of who you are. The verse invites a similar calm toward your own body's changes, while still caring for it well.
Shankaracharya gives an image for how the knower stands toward his own body.
There is no gain here greater than gaining one's own true nature, and it comes from this [knowledge], not from anywhere else. This gaining of one's true nature, worth more even than the kingdom of Indra, should not be given without carefully testing [the student].
Meaning today and context
Even the greatest worldly success, a kingdom of the gods, is less than knowing who you truly are. Such a teaching is offered with care, to those ready to receive it.
The chapter closes by stating the worth of this knowledge and a warning about who should receive it.
