Book 4: Sandhi, peace

4.1 Narayana

vṛtte mahati saṅgrāme rājñornihata-senayoḥ | stheyābhyāṃ gṛdhra-cakrābhyāṃ vācā sandhiḥ kṛtaḥ kṣaṇāt ||

When the great battle was over and both kings' armies had been destroyed, the vulture and the cakravāka, acting as arbiters, made peace in a moment, with words alone.

Meaning today and context

After all the damage a fight does, what finally ends it is two sensible people talking. Words can settle in a moment what force could not settle at all.

Opening verse of Book 4 (Sandhi, making peace): the sage Viṣṇuśarman gives the princes the verse that sums up the story to come, how the swan king's and the peacock king's war ended.

4.2 Narayana

This fault belongs to fate, not to the ministers. A task well carried out is sometimes ruined by the turn of fate.

Meaning today and context

Sometimes a plan fails even when everyone did their part well. A leader who sees this does not turn on the team for every setback; but the very next verse warns against using bad luck to hide real mistakes.

The swan king Hiraṇyagarbha's fort has been burned; his minister, the cakravāka Sarvajña, suspects the crow Meghavarṇa, whom the king had trusted. The king reflects that it is his bad luck, not his ministers' fault.

4.3 Narayana

viṣamāṃ hi daśāṃ prāpya daivaṃ garhayate naraḥ | ātmanaḥ karma-doṣāṃśca naiva jānātyapaṇḍitaḥ ||

Falling into hard times, a man blames fate; the unwise never see the faults in their own actions.

Meaning today and context

"Bad luck" is the easiest explanation for a failure and often the least useful. Before blaming fate, look honestly at what you did and could have done differently; that is the part you can change.

Continuing the reflection after the fort is burned, the verse answers the king's talk of fate: the unwise blame fate and do not see their own mistakes.

4.4 Narayana

suhṛdāṃ hita-kāmānāṃ yo vākyaṃ nābhinandati | sa kūrma iva durbuddhiḥ kāṣṭhādbhraṣṭo vinaśyati ||

He who does not welcome the words of friends who wish him well perishes, the fool, like the tortoise that fell from the stick.

Meaning today and context

Friends who care about you often see a danger you can't. You don't have to obey every piece of advice, but brushing off a warning from someone who wants your good is how many avoidable falls happen.

The minister goes on: the king ignored warnings to check the fort. He recalls the tortoise who would not heed his friends the swans.

4.5 Narayana

rakṣitavyaṃ sadā vākyaṃ vākyādbhavati nāśanam | haṃsābhyāṃ nīyamānasya kūrmasya patanaṃ yathā ||

Speech must always be guarded; ruin comes from speech, as the tortoise being carried by the two swans fell.

Meaning today and context

The tortoise had a safe way out and lost it to one angry retort. When people provoke or mock you, the urge to answer back can cost you more than the insult ever could; sometimes the wisest thing is to keep your mouth shut.

The minister adds a second line on the same tale: the tortoise, carried through the air on a stick held by two swans, opened his mouth to answer the jeers of onlookers and fell.

4.6 Narayana

anāgata-vidhātā ca pratyutpanna-matistathā | dvāveva sukhamedhete yad-bhaviṣyo vinaśyati ||

The one who provides for what has not yet come, and the one with presence of mind when it comes: these two thrive in happiness. Whatever-Will-Be perishes.

Meaning today and context

Two attitudes work: preparing early, and thinking clearly when trouble arrives. The one that fails is shrugging and waiting; that is how an avoidable problem becomes a disaster.

In the story of the tortoise Kambugrīva: fishermen say they will come at dawn, and the swans suggest waiting to see. The tortoise answers with the tale of three fish named Plan-Ahead, Quick-Wit and Whatever-Will-Be.

4.7 Narayana

utpannāmāpadaṃ yastu samādhatte sa buddhimān | vaṇijo bhāryayā jāraḥ pratyakṣe nihnuto yathā ||

He who handles a calamity once it has arisen is wise, as the merchant's wife hid her lover right before her husband's eyes.

The tale praises a deceitful cover-up; the lesson is presence of mind in trouble, not lying or hiding wrongdoing.

Meaning today and context

Presence of mind in a crisis is a real skill: staying calm and finding a way through when things go wrong. The example is a trickster's tale; the point is quick thinking, not cover-ups.

The fish Quick-Wit says there is no knowing the future, so he will act when trouble comes, and cites the tale of a merchant's wife who covered up her lover in front of her husband.

4.8 Narayana

na strīṇāmapriyaḥ kaścitpriyo vāpi na vidyate | gāvastṛṇamivāraṇye prārthayante navaṃ navam ||

To women no one is disliked, and no one is dear either; like cows in a forest seeking grass, they always want someone new.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time about women; it is not the app's view and must never be used to demean, distrust or control women.

Meaning today and context

This is a stock prejudice of old story literature, voiced to set up a tale of infidelity. It says nothing true about women; faithfulness and unfaithfulness belong to individuals of any gender.

In the inner tale told by the fish Quick-Wit: the merchant Samudradatta's wife Ratnaprabhā carries on with a servant, and the narrator quotes this maxim.

4.9 Narayana

āhāro dviguṇaḥ strīṇāṃ buddhistāsāṃ catur-guṇā | ṣaḍ-guṇo vyavasāyaśca kāmāścāṣṭaguṇaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

A woman's appetite is said to be twice a man's, her cunning four times, her resolve six times, and her desire eight times.

This verse reflects the prejudices of its time about women; it is not the app's view and must never be used to demean, distrust or control women.

Meaning today and context

A misogynist saying of its time, used to colour a comic tale of a clever, unfaithful wife. It is not knowledge about women and should be read only as part of the story.

Caught kissing the servant, the merchant's wife tells her husband she was only smelling the servant's breath because he steals camphor; the narrator quotes this maxim about women's cunning.

4.10 Narayana

yadabhāvi na tadbhāvi bhāvi cenna tadanyathā | iti cintā-viṣa-ghno'yamagadaḥ kiṃ na pīyate ||

What is not to be will not be; what is to be will not be otherwise. This is the antidote that kills the poison of worry: why not drink it?

In the story the fish who trusts fate alone is caught and killed; this verse eases worry but is not a reason to stop trying. If worry feels overwhelming, talk to someone: Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

As a remedy for useless, circling worry, the thought "what must happen will happen" can bring real relief. But in the story the fish who lives by it is the one who dies: let it quiet anxiety, not replace the action that is still in your hands.

The third fish, Whatever-Will-Be, answers the other two with this verse and stays put. Next morning he is netted and killed, while Quick-Wit plays dead and escapes and Plan-Ahead has already left.

4.11 Narayana

upāyaṃ cintayetprājño hyapāyamapi cintayet | paśyato baka-mūrkhasya nakulairbhakṣitāḥ sutāḥ ||

A wise person thinks out the means, and thinks out also what could go wrong with it; while the foolish crane looked on, the mongooses ate its young.

Meaning today and context

Every solution brings its own risks. The cranes brought mongooses to kill the snake, and the mongooses then ate their chicks. Before acting on a clever plan, ask what it could set off.

The tortoise proposes to hold a stick in his mouth while the two swans fly with its ends in their beaks. The swans agree the plan can work, but warn him with the tale of the cranes whose young were eaten by mongooses.

4.12 Narayana

praṇayādupakārādvā yo viśvasiti śatruṣu | sa supta iva vṛkṣāgrātpatitaḥ pratibudhyate ||

He who trusts enemies out of affection or because of a favour wakes up only the way a sleeper wakes who has fallen from the top of a tree.

Meaning today and context

Warmth and small favours can lull us into trusting someone whose interests are opposed to ours. Kindness is good, but don't let it blind you to what a person has already shown you; waking up after the fall is costly.

Back in the main story, the crane spy reports that the fire was set by the crow Meghavarṇa, whom Hiraṇyagarbha had welcomed, on the vulture minister's instructions. The king sighs and says this.

4.13 Narayana

kṛta-kṛtyasya bhṛtyasya kṛtaṃ naiva praṇāśayet | phalena manasā vācā dṛṣṭyā cainaṃ praharṣayet ||

One should never let the work of a servant who has accomplished his task go for nothing; one should gladden him with reward, with goodwill, with words and with a look.

Meaning today and context

For anyone who leads people: when someone delivers, recognise it in every way you can, with fair reward, real appreciation, a word of thanks and attention. Work that goes unnoticed slowly kills commitment.

The spy reports that the peacock king Citravarṇa, pleased with Meghavarṇa's success, proposes to crown him king of Karpūradvīpa, quoting this maxim.

4.14 Narayana

avicārayato yukti-kathanaṃ tuṣa-khaṇḍanam | nīceṣūpakṛtaṃ rājanbālukāsviva mūtritam ||

Offering reasons to one who will not reflect is pounding husks; a favour done to the base, O king, is like urine poured on sand.

"Base" (nīca) here means base in conduct, not in birth or background; it is not a reason to look down on anyone.

Meaning today and context

Some people will not weigh an argument however good it is, and some will not remember a kindness however large. Notice who they are, and spend your effort where it can take root.

The vulture minister Dūradarśin objects to Citravarṇa's plan to crown the crow: reasoning with the unreflecting is wasted, and so is a favour to the base.

4.15 Narayana

nīcaḥ ślāghya-padaṃ prāpya svāminaṃ hantumicchati | mūṣiko vyāghratāṃ prāpya muniṃ hantuṃ gato yathā ||

A base person who reaches an honoured post wants to destroy his master, as the mouse, made a tiger, set out to kill the sage.

"Base" means base in conduct, never in birth, caste or humble origins; this is not a reason to keep anyone from rising.

Meaning today and context

People raised beyond their character sometimes turn on whoever knows where they came from; the mouse-tiger was ashamed of his past, not grateful for it. When promoting someone, look at their character, not only their ability; and if you have been raised up, don't resent those who helped you.

Dūradarśin continues: the base should never be put in the seat of the great. He tells of the mouse a sage turned into a cat, a dog and a tiger, which then tried to kill the sage so no one would remember it had been a mouse.

4.16 Narayana

bhakṣayitvā bahūnmatsyānuttamādhama-madhyamān | atilobhādbakaḥ paścānmṛtaḥ karkaṭaka-grahāt ||

Having eaten many fish, best, worst and middling, the crane in the end died of excess greed, in the grip of a crab.

Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Greed that keeps succeeding grows careless; one more grab and it meets someone it cannot handle. Knowing when to stop is part of good judgment, in money and in everything else.

Dūradarśin warns Citravarṇa not to think the matter easy, and tells of the old crane who ate the fish of a lake by pretending to carry them to safety, until a crab cut his throat.

4.17 Narayana

upakartrāriṇā sandhirna mitreṇāpakāriṇā | upakārāpakāro hi lakṣyaṃ lakṣaṇametayoḥ ||

Make peace with an enemy who helps you, not with a friend who harms you; for help and harm are the visible marks of each.

Meaning today and context

Judge people by what they actually do to you, not by the label "friend" or "rival". But the fish used this rule on one show of concern and were eaten: look at conduct over time, not one convincing gesture.

In the tale of the crane and the crab: the crane says fishermen will come and he is fasting in sorrow; the fish decide that, since he seems to help them, they should ask his advice, quoting this maxim. The crane then eats them one by one.

4.18 Narayana

tāvadbhayena bhetavyaṃ yāvadbhayamanāgatam | āgataṃ tu bhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā prahartavyamabhītavat ||

Fear is to be feared only so long as the danger has not come; once you see the danger has come, strike back as one who is unafraid.

Meaning today and context

Worry has a use before trouble arrives: it makes us prepare. Once the trouble is actually here, fear only freezes us; that is the time to act firmly and deal with it.

The crane carries the crab to a spot littered with fish bones. Seeing he is about to be eaten, the crab tells himself to act as the moment demands.

4.19 Narayana

abhiyukto yadā paśyenna kiñcidgatimātmanaḥ | yudhyamānastadā prājño mriyate ripuṇā saha ||

When a person under attack sees no way out for himself, the wise one fights, and dies, if he must, together with his enemy.

A fable about a crab and a crane; never a reason to harm anyone or oneself. If you feel trapped or think of dying, call Tele-MANAS 14416; if you are in danger, 112 (women's helpline 181).

Meaning today and context

In the fable it means: when you are truly cornered, don't give in passively; resist with everything you have. Today it applies to refusing to surrender to injustice, not to harming anyone.

The crab adds this thought, then cuts the crane's neck with his claws and escapes.

4.20 Narayana

anāgatavatīṃ cintāṃ kṛtvā yastu prahṛṣyati | sa tiraskāramāpnoti bhagna-bhāṇḍo dvijo yathā ||

He who rejoices in thoughts of what has not yet happened meets with disgrace, like the brahmin who broke the pots.

Meaning today and context

Building castles in the air feels good, but it can make us careless with what we actually have. Plan, by all means, but don't spend or celebrate gains that exist only in your head.

Citravarṇa proposes to make the crow Meghavarṇa send him all the treasures of Karpūradvīpa so he can live at ease. The vulture Dūradarśin laughs and tells of the brahmin who, dreaming of riches from a pot of barley meal, swung his stick and smashed the potter's pots.

4.21 Narayana

madoddhatasya nṛpateḥ prakīrṇasyeva dantinaḥ | gacchantyunmārga-yātasya netāraḥ khalu vācyatām ||

When a king, drunk with pride, leaves the right path like a rampaging elephant, it is surely his guides who incur the blame.

Meaning today and context

Those who advise a leader share the blame when the leader runs wild, so they have a duty to speak up in time. And a leader should know that arrogance damages not only himself but everyone around him.

Citravarṇa privately asks Dūradarśin what to do. The vulture begins by saying that when a proud king goes astray, it is his advisers who are blamed.

yo hi dharmaṃ puraskṛtya hitvā bhartuḥ priyāpriye | apriyāṇyāha pathyāni tena rājā sahāyavān ||

He who puts dharma first and, setting aside what his master likes or dislikes, speaks unwelcome but wholesome words: through him a king truly has a helper.

Meaning today and context

The most valuable person on a team is the one who tells the leader an unwelcome truth for the right reasons. If you lead, keep such people close; if you advise, say what is good, not only what pleases.

Dūradarśin advises Citravarṇa to make peace and go home before the rains, and explains why he speaks plainly.

suhṛd-balaṃ tathā rājyamātmānaṃ kīrtimeva ca | yudhi sandehadolāsthaṃ ko hi kuryādabāliśaḥ ||

Friends and forces, kingdom, one's own self and one's good name: what sensible person would set these swinging in the doubt of battle?

Meaning today and context

Some fights put everything at risk at once: relationships, livelihood, health and reputation. Whether it is a feud, a lawsuit or an all-or-nothing bet, ask whether the prize is worth putting all of that on the swing.

Dūradarśin continues his case for peace: no sensible person stakes everything on the uncertain outcome of a war.

4.24 Narayana

sandhimicchetsamenāpi sandigdho vijayo yudhi | nahi saṃśayitaṃ kuryādityuvāca bṛhaspatiḥ ||

One should seek peace even with an equal, for victory in war is uncertain; "do nothing doubtful", so said Bṛhaspati.

Meaning today and context

When you are up against someone as strong as you, a fight can go either way and both can lose. Settling is not weakness; it is often the smarter outcome.

Dūradarśin cites Bṛhaspati, the teacher of statecraft, and then tells of Sunda and Upasunda.

4.25 Narayana

yuddhe vināśo bhavati kadācidubhayorapi | sundopa-sundāvanyonyaṃ naṣṭau tulya-balau na kim ||

In war, sometimes both sides are destroyed. Did not Sunda and Upasunda, equal in strength, destroy each other?

Meaning today and context

When two equally strong people fight to the end, often neither wins: siblings over property, partners over a company, colleagues over a post. Stop before the fight destroys both of you.

Dūradarśin gives Citravarṇa an example of equals who destroyed each other, the demon brothers Sunda and Upasunda.

4.26 Narayana

jñāna-śreṣṭho dvijaḥ pūjyaḥ kṣatriyo balavānapi | dhana-dhānyādhiko vaiśyaḥ śūdrastu dvija-sevayā ||

A twice-born is honoured as foremost in knowledge, a kṣatriya for his strength, a vaiśya for his wealth and grain, and a śūdra for serving the twice-born.

Varṇa here is to be read as role and conduct, never as birth-based caste; this verse must never be used to rank or exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

In the story this is the trick by which the god turns the brothers' pride against them. As a statement of social order it reflects its time; today worth comes from knowledge, effort and conduct, open to everyone.

In the tale of Sunda and Upasunda: the two demon brothers, granted Pārvatī by Śiva, quarrel over her and ask an old brahmin (Śiva in disguise) to judge. He answers with this verse and tells them that, as warriors, their way is to fight; they kill each other.

satyāryau dhārmiko'nāryo bhrātṛ-saṅghātavānbalī | aneka-yuddha-vijayī sandheyāḥ sapta kīrtitāḥ ||

The truthful, the noble, the righteous, the ignoble, one with a united band of brothers, the strong, and one who has won many wars: these seven are declared fit to make peace with.

Meaning today and context

Not every opponent should be fought. People of their word, people of principle, and those with strong backing or a proven record are better made into partners than enemies.

In Citravarṇa's camp (as later reported by the crane spy), the vulture minister Dūradarśin explains to the peacock king that the swan king Hiraṇyagarbha should never have been attacked, and lists those with whom one should make peace.

satyo'nupālayansatyaṃ sandhito naiti vikriyām | prāṇa-bādhe'pi suvyaktamāryo nāyātyanāryatām ||

The truthful one, keeping to the truth, does not change once peace has been made with him; even when his life is threatened, the noble one plainly does not stoop to ignoble ways.

Meaning today and context

A person of their word stays true to an agreement even when it costs them. Such people are the safest to deal with, and worth trying to be.

dhārmikasyābhiyuktasya sarva eva hi yudhyate | prajānurāgāddharmācca duḥkhocchedyo hi dhārmikaḥ ||

When a righteous king is attacked, everyone fights for him; through his people's love and through dharma, the righteous one is hard to uproot.

Meaning today and context

Integrity builds a kind of protection money cannot buy: when a fair person is attacked, people stand up for them. A leader who treats people rightly is not easily brought down.

In Citravarṇa's camp (as later reported by the crane spy), the vulture minister Dūradarśin explains to the peacock king that the swan king Hiraṇyagarbha should never have been attacked, and lists those with whom one should make peace. He explains why a righteous king should not be attacked.

sandhiḥ kāryo'pyanāryeṇa vināśe samupasthite | vinā tasyāśrayeṇāryo na kuryātkāla-yāpanam ||

Peace should be made even with an ignoble one when destruction is at hand; a noble person should not let time slip by without the shelter that such a peace gives.

Meaning today and context

When ruin is close, a practical settlement even with someone you don't respect can be the right call, and delay only makes it worse. It is about surviving a crisis, not about giving up your own values.

An old list of weaknesses that make a ruler easy to defeat in war; it does not judge anyone's worth, and must never be used to look down on children, the old, the sick or anyone excluded by family.

Alienating your own people leaves you exposed: estranged family or colleagues are easily recruited by those who wish you harm. Mending ties is also self-protection.

Running from every hard thing eventually defeats you without anyone else doing anything. And a team chosen for comfort rather than courage will scatter when tested.

Because the greedy one does not share, his dependants will not fight for him; and the one whose dependants are greedy is killed by those very dependants, split from him by gifts.

Meaning today and context

A leader who keeps the rewards to himself should not expect loyalty when things get hard. And people who are with you only for money can be bought away by someone offering more.

Meaning today and context

A leader who has lost the goodwill of their people stands alone when it matters. And one absorbed in comforts and indulgences stops paying attention, which is exactly when trouble strikes.

Because dharma is always the stronger, the reviler of gods and brahmins falls apart by himself; and so does the one struck down by fate.

"Brahmins" here means the learned and devout, by conduct, not by birth; and misfortune is not a sign that someone deserved it.

All the subjects truly have their master as their root; even with trees, people's effort bears fruit only when the roots are there.

Spoken as part of a trick in a fable. Serving a master at any cost is not advice to accept abuse or exploitation at work, or to harm yourself for anyone; Tele-MANAS 14416 if you feel pushed to that.

vrajanti na nivartante srotāṃsi saritāṃ yathā | āyurādāya martyānāṃ tathā rātry-ahanī sadā ||

As the currents of rivers flow on and never turn back, so night and day go on for ever, carrying away the lives of mortals.

Meaning today and context

Time does not come back. Each day spent is gone for good, so spend it on what matters: people, good work, and growth.

sukhāsvāda-paro yastu saṃsāre sat-samāgamaḥ | sa viyogāvasānatvādduḥkhānāṃ dhuri yujyate ||

Even the company of good people in this world, when it is set on savouring pleasure, is yoked at the head of sorrows, because it ends in separation.

If you are grieving, your sorrow is real and mourning is natural; Kapila's reminders of impermanence are meant to steady, not to dismiss the loss. If grief feels unbearable or you think of ending your life, reach out to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Even the best friendships bring pain when they end, if we only cling to the pleasure of them. Value good company for what it teaches and gives, not only for the comfort.

ata eva hi necchanti sādhavaḥ sat-samāgamam | yad-viyogāsi-lūnasya manaso nāsti bheṣajam ||

That is why the good do not even long for the company of the good: for a mind cut by the sword of parting from them, there is no medicine.

Not advice to avoid close relationships or isolate yourself; it speaks of how deep the pain of parting is. Isolation deepens grief: reach out to people, or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

The verse shows how deep the wound of losing a beloved person can be. The honest lesson is to love without clinging, not to shut people out to avoid pain.

Kings like Sagara did many good deeds; and yet those very deeds, and the kings themselves, have passed into dissolution.

Even great achievements and those who made them fade. Do good for its own sake, not for a lasting name, and don't measure a life only by what it leaves behind.

When a discerning person thinks again and again of death with its fierce rod, all his strivings go slack, like leather straps soaked in rain.

If thinking about death leaves you feeling everything is pointless or you have lost the will to go on, please talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Remembering death loosens the grip of ambition and the anxious push for more. Used well, this helps us drop what doesn't matter; it is not meant to drain the will to live or to care.

yāmeva rātriṃ prathamāmupaiti | garbhe nivāsaṃ naravīra lokaḥ | tataḥ prabhṛtyaskhalita-prayāṇaḥ | sa pratyahaṃ mṛtyu-samīpameti ||

From the very first night a person comes to dwell in the womb, O hero among men, from then on, without a pause in his journey, he moves day by day nearer to death.

This verse reflects on death to loosen attachment and make life count; it is not an invitation to die or a reason to give up. If thoughts of death trouble you, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

ajñānaṃ kāraṇaṃ na syādviyogo yadi kāraṇam | śoko dineṣu gacchatsu vardhatāmapayāti kim ||

If separation, and not ignorance, were the cause of grief, then grief should grow as the days pass; why does it go away?

Meaning today and context

The separation stays the same, yet the sharpness of grief slowly softens; so much of our suffering lies in how the mind holds the loss. In the worst days it can help to know that this pain will not stay as raw for ever.

akāṇḍa-pāta-jātānāmastrāṇāṃ marma-bhedinām | gāḍha-śoka-prahārāṇāmacintaiva mahauṣadham ||

For the deep blows of grief, which strike like arrows falling without warning and piercing the vitals, not brooding on them is the great medicine.

Not brooding is not the same as suppressing grief; mourning, crying and talking about the loss are natural. If grief overwhelms you, reach out to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

After a sudden loss, replaying it endlessly deepens the wound. Gently turning the mind to the present, to daily tasks and people, helps healing; this is not the same as denying the grief.

vane'pi doṣāḥ prabhavanti rāgiṇāṃ | gṛhe'pi pañcendriya-nigrahastapaḥ | akutsite karmaṇi yaḥ pravartate | nivṛtta-rāgasya gṛhaṃ tapovanam ||

Even in the forest, faults overpower the passionate; even at home, restraint of the five senses is austerity. For one who engages in blameless work and whose passion has ceased, home itself is a hermitage.

Meaning today and context

Running away from home, work or family does not by itself bring peace; your mind goes with you. Self-restraint and honest work where you are can make ordinary life a place of growth.

duḥkhito'pi careddharmaṃ yatra kutrāśrame rataḥ | samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu na liṅgaṃ dharma-kāraṇam ||

Even when in sorrow, one should practise dharma, content in whatever stage of life one is in, and even-minded towards all beings; outward signs are not what make dharma.

Meaning today and context

Goodness doesn't need special robes, marks or a change of life. Even in grief, you can live rightly where you are, by being fair and kind to everyone.

Kapila goes on, telling Kauṇḍinya that dharma does not depend on leaving home.

Those for whom eating is only to sustain life, union only for children, and speech only for speaking the truth, cross even the hardest straits.

Not dietary advice; for food and health, consult a doctor.

Meaning today and context

Using food, desire and speech for their real purpose, rather than excess, gives a person steadiness that carries them through hard times. Moderation and truthfulness are a strength.

The self is a river whose holy bathing-place is self-restraint, whose water is truth, whose banks are good conduct and whose waves are compassion. Bathe there, son of Pāṇḍu; the inner self is not made pure by water.

Meaning today and context

Pilgrimages and ritual baths don't clean the heart; restraint, truthfulness, good conduct and compassion do. Real purity is in how we live.

Kapila continues, quoting a verse spoken to a son of Pāṇḍu, that true purity is inward.

janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-vedanābhirupadrutam | saṃsāramimamutpannamasāraṃ tyajataḥ sukham ||

This round of existence, beset by the pains of birth, death, old age and disease, is without substance; happiness belongs to the one who lets it go.

Spoken to a grieving man who wants to leave home; not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. If life feels like nothing but pain, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Inner freedom comes from not clinging to the passing things of life. For most people this means loosening attachment within, while still living and caring for others.

Kapila continues his counsel to Kauṇḍinya.

duḥkhamevāsti na sukhaṃ yasmāttadupalakṣyate | duḥkhārtasya pratīkāre sukha-saṃjñā vidhīyate ||

There is only pain, not pleasure, for what is seen as pleasure is this: the name 'pleasure' is given to the relief of one afflicted by pain.

Spoken to a grieving man who wants to leave home; not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. If life feels like nothing but pain, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of what we call pleasure is relief from some need or discomfort, which is why it never fully satisfies. Seeing this can turn us toward a deeper contentment than chasing the next relief.

Attachment should be given up completely; if it cannot be given up, then let it be formed with the good, for the company of the good is medicine.

Meaning today and context

If you can't stop needing people, and few can, then choose them well: the company of good people heals. In grief especially, stay close to kind and wise people.

Kauṇḍinya agrees. Kapila, seeing that his heart is still too full of grief to bear instruction, gives him one last counsel.

4.97 Narayana

kāmaḥ sarvātmanā heyaḥ sa ceddhātuṃ na śakyate | sva-bhāryāṃ prati kartavyaḥ saiva tasya hi bheṣajam ||

Desire should be given up entirely; if it cannot be given up, let it be directed to one's own wife. She alone is its remedy.

Meaning today and context

Where desire cannot simply be switched off, the honest path is to keep it within a committed relationship rather than let it scatter. Self-control here means faithful channelling, not denial.

One should not thunder in vain like an autumn cloud. A great person does not announce what will help or harm another.

Meaning today and context

Loud threats and big announcements in anger rarely achieve anything; they only warn the other side. Capable people act quietly and keep their plans to themselves.

One who, without understanding the true state of things, falls under the sway of anger, that fool suffers afterwards, as the brahmin did over the mongoose.

In the story, the brahmin sees blood on the mongoose's mouth and kills it, only to find it had saved his child from a snake. Before reacting in anger, find out what actually happened; some harm cannot be undone.

In the story, haste leads the brahmin to leave his baby in the care of a mongoose; acting promptly is not the same as being careless about those who depend on us.

The six inner enemies, lust, anger, greed, giddy excitement, ego and arrogance, cloud the judgment of anyone in charge. A leader who masters them makes better decisions and lives more at peace.

After the story of the mongoose, Dūradarśin adds a maxim for the king Citravarṇa.

4.103 Narayana

smṛtistat-paratārtheṣu vitarko jñāna-niścayaḥ | dṛḍhatā mantra-guptiśca mantriṇaḥ paramo guṇaḥ ||

Memory, devotion to the goal in matters at hand, careful reasoning, certainty of knowledge, firmness and keeping counsel secret: these are the highest qualities of a minister.

Meaning today and context

A good adviser, or any trusted colleague, remembers the facts, stays focused on the goal, thinks things through, knows rather than guesses, holds steady, and keeps confidences.

Citravarṇa asks if this is his minister's firm view; Dūradarśin says yes, and describes the virtues of a good minister.

4.104 Narayana

sahasā vidadhīta na kriyām | avivekaḥ paramāpadāṃ padam | vṛṇute hi vimṛśya kāriṇaṃ | guṇa-lubdhāḥ svayameva sampadaḥ ||

Do not do anything in haste; lack of discernment is the chief seat of disasters. Good fortune, drawn by merit, chooses of her own accord the one who acts after reflection.

Meaning today and context

Hasty decisions are where most disasters start. Pause, think it over, and then act; success tends to follow the person who considers before moving.

Dūradarśin continues, warning the king against rash action.

4.105 Narayana

yadyapyupāyāścatvāro nirdiṣṭāḥ sādhya-sādhane | saṅkhyā-mātraṃ phalaṃ teṣāṃ siddhiḥ sāmni vyavasthitā ||

Though four means are taught for achieving one's aim, their number is a mere count: success rests in conciliation.

Meaning today and context

Of all the ways of getting things done, persuasion, pressure, division or force, talking things through and reaching agreement is the one that most reliably works and lasts.

Dūradarśin urges Citravarṇa to make peace before marching away, praising conciliation above the other means.

4.106 Narayana

mṛd-ghaṭavatsukha-bhedyo | duḥsandhānaśca durjano bhavati | sujanastu kanaka-ghaṭavad | durbhedyaścāśu sandheyaḥ ||

A wicked person is like a clay pot: easily broken and hard to put back together. A good person is like a golden pot: hard to break and quickly rejoined.

Meaning today and context

Good people are slow to fall out and quick to reconcile; petty people break off over little and hold grudges. This is also a test of our own character after a quarrel.

The king asks how peace can be made so quickly; Dūradarśin replies that with a good person it can.

4.107 Narayana

ajñaḥ sukhamārādhyaḥ sukhataramārādhyate viśeṣajñaḥ | jñāna-lava-durvidagdhaṃ brahmāpi naraṃ na rañjayati ||

An ignorant person is easily won over, one who truly knows is won over more easily still; but a person puffed up with a scrap of knowledge, not even Brahmā can satisfy.

Meaning today and context

Half-knowledge is harder to deal with than no knowledge; it makes people sure of themselves and closed to reason. Worth remembering both with others and with ourselves.

Dūradarśin continues on whom one can win over and whom not.

4.108 Narayana

karmānumeyāḥ sarvatra parokṣa-guṇa-vṛttayaḥ | tasmātparokṣa-vṛttīnāṃ phalaiḥ karma vibhāvayet ||

Everywhere, qualities and conduct that are hidden from view must be inferred from deeds. So judge the work of those whose ways are hidden by its results.

Meaning today and context

You cannot see into someone's heart, but you can see what they do and what comes of it. Judge people, and their claims, by results rather than words.

Dūradarśin adds a maxim on judging people whose qualities one cannot see directly.

4.109 Narayana

sarasi bahuśastārācchāyekṣaṇātparivañcitaḥ | kumuda-viṭapānveṣī haṃso niśāsvavicakṣaṇaḥ | na daśati punastārāśaṅkī divāpi sitotpalaṃ | kuhuka-cakito lokaḥ satye'pyapāyamapekṣate ||

A swan searching at night for lily stalks in a lake, deceived many times by reflections of stars, does not bite even a white lotus by day, fearing it is a star. People startled by trickery expect harm even in what is true.

Meaning today and context

After being let down repeatedly, we can start distrusting even what is genuine. The lesson is to notice when old hurt is making us reject real goodness, while still using judgment.

As the vulture Dūradarśin comes to make peace, the swan king Hiraṇyagarbha suspects another trick; his minister Sarvajña says slow minds either never suspect or suspect everything, and gives this example.

4.110 Narayana

durjana-dūṣita-manasaḥ sujaneṣvapi nāsti viśvāsaḥ | bālaḥ pāyasa-dagdho dadhyapi phūtkṛtya bhakṣayati ||

One whose mind has been poisoned by wicked people has no trust even in the good. A child burnt by hot milk-rice blows even on curd before eating it.

Meaning today and context

Like 'once bitten, twice shy': bad experiences make us wary even of safe people. Caution is natural, but it helps to check whether this person has actually given us cause.

Sarvajña continues his point to Hiraṇyagarbha about excessive suspicion.

lubdhamarthena gṛhṇīyātstabdhamañjali-karmaṇā | mūrkhaṃ chandānurodhena yāthātathyena paṇḍitam ||

Win a greedy person with money, a stubborn one with folded hands, a fool by going along with his wishes, and a wise person with the plain truth.

Not a licence to bribe, flatter or manipulate anyone; the verse's point is to meet people as they are, and honesty with the wise.

Meaning today and context

Different people respond to different approaches; with a thoughtful person, nothing works like honesty. Understanding people this way is useful for dealing with them respectfully, not for manipulating them.

Dūradarśin arrives at the swans' fort and is received with honour; when told the kingdom is at his disposal, he says long courtesies are needless and quotes this.

4.112 Narayana

sad-bhāvena harenmitraṃ sambhrameṇa tu bāndhavān | strī-bhṛtyau dāna-mānābhyāṃ dākṣiṇyenetarānjanān ||

Win a friend with sincerity, relatives with warm attentiveness, women and servants with gifts and honour, and other people with courtesy.

Grouping women with servants reflects the social order of its time; it is not the app's view and must never be used to treat women as dependants to be managed with gifts.

Meaning today and context

Each relationship asks for something of its own: sincerity with friends, warm attention with family, generosity and respect with those who live or work with us, and courtesy with everyone.

Dūradarśin continues on how to win the hearts of different people.

balīyasābhiyuktastu nṛpo nānya-pratikriyaḥ | āpannaḥ sandhimanvicchetkurvāṇaḥ kāla-yāpanam ||

A king attacked by a stronger one, with no other remedy, being in distress, should seek peace while playing for time.

Meaning today and context

When you face a much stronger opponent and have no real alternative, seeking terms and buying time is wiser than a hopeless fight. It applies to disputes, negotiations and business rivalries as much as to war.

Asked by Hiraṇyagarbha how many kinds of peace treaty there are, Dūradarśin begins his account of the sixteen treaties.

4.114 Narayana

kapāla upahāraśca santānaḥ saṃgatastathā | upanyāsaḥ pratīkāraḥ saṃyogaḥ puruṣāntaraḥ ||

Kapāla, upahāra, santāna and saṅgata; upanyāsa, pratīkāra, saṃyoga and puruṣāntara;

कपाल, उपहार, संतान और संगत; उपन्यास, प्रतीकार, संयोग और पुरुषांतर;

Meaning today and context

Part of a technical list of treaties from old statecraft; it shows how many forms an agreement between rivals could take.

Dūradarśin lists the sixteen kinds of peace treaty known to experts in statecraft.

4.115 Narayana

adṛṣṭa-nara ādiṣṭa ātmāmiṣa upagrahaḥ | parikrayastathocchinnastathā ca para-dūṣaṇaḥ ||

adṛṣṭa-nara, ādiṣṭa, ātmāmiṣa and upagraha; parikraya, ucchinna and para-dūṣaṇa;

अदृष्टनर, आदिष्ट, आत्मामिष और उपग्रह; परिक्रय, उच्छिन्न और परदूषण;

Meaning today and context

Continues the technical list of treaties; of historical interest rather than personal counsel.

The list of sixteen treaties continues.

4.116 Narayana

skandhopaneyaḥ sandhiśca ṣoḍaśaḥ parikīrtitaḥ | iti ṣoḍaśakaṃ prāhuḥ sandhiṃ sandhi-vicakṣaṇāḥ ||

and the skandhopaneya treaty is declared the sixteenth. Thus those skilled in treaties speak of sixteen kinds of peace.

Meaning today and context

Closes the list: old statecraft had a detailed vocabulary for making peace, not only for making war.

Dūradarśin completes the list of sixteen treaties.

4.117 Narayana

kapāla-sandhirvijñeyaḥ kevalaṃ sama-sandhikaḥ | sampradānādbhavati ya upahāraḥ sa ucyate ||

The kapāla treaty should be known as simply a treaty between equals. The one that comes about by giving a gift is called upahāra.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: a peace between equals, and a peace bought with a gift.

Dūradarśin begins defining each of the sixteen treaties.

4.118 Narayana

santāna-sandhirvijñeyo dārikā-dāna-pūrvakaḥ | sadbhistu saṅgataḥ sandhirmaitrī-pūrva udāhṛtaḥ ||

The santāna treaty is to be known as one sealed by the gift of a daughter in marriage. But the saṅgata treaty, made with good people, is said to be founded on friendship.

Giving a daughter in marriage to seal a political alliance reflects the customs of its time; it is not a model for treating marriage or daughters today.

Meaning today and context

The verse contrasts an alliance sealed by a marriage arrangement with one that rests on real friendship between good people; the latter, it goes on to say, is the best.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties, coming to the one based on friendship.

4.119 Narayana

yāvadāyuḥ-pramāṇastu samānārtha-prayojanaḥ | sampattau vā vipattau vā kāraṇairyo na bhidyate ||

One that lasts as long as life itself, with shared aims and purposes, and that is not broken by any cause, whether in prosperity or in adversity,

Meaning today and context

This is a picture of true friendship or partnership: shared goals, lifelong, and unshaken by good times or bad. Fair-weather ties break; real ones hold.

Dūradarśin describes the saṅgata treaty, the alliance founded on friendship.

4.120 Narayana

saṅgataḥ sandhirevāyaṃ prakṛṣṭatvātsuvarṇavat | tathānyaiḥ sandhi-kuśalaiḥ kāñcanaḥ samudāhṛtaḥ ||

this is the saṅgata treaty; because it is the finest, like gold, other experts in treaties call it kāñcana, the golden one.

Meaning today and context

A bond built on genuine friendship is called golden because it is the most valuable and the least likely to tarnish; it is the treaty the two kings finally make.

Dūradarśin concludes his description of the friendship treaty.

4.121 Narayana

ātma-kāryasya siddhiṃ tu samuddiśya kriyeta yaḥ | sa upanyāsa-kuśalairupanyāsa udāhṛtaḥ ||

A treaty made with an eye to accomplishing one's own business is called upanyāsa by those skilled in it.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: an agreement made purely for one's own purpose.

Dūradarśin continues defining the sixteen treaties for Hiraṇyagarbha.

4.122 Narayana

mayāsyopakṛtaṃ pūrvaṃ mamāpyeṣa kariṣyati | iti yaḥ kriyate sandhiḥ pratīkāraḥ sa ucyate ||

'I helped him before; he too will help me': a treaty made in this spirit is called pratīkāra.

Meaning today and context

Many relationships rest on remembered help and the expectation that it will be returned. It is a sound basis for cooperation, though weaker than friendship that asks nothing back.

Dūradarśin defines the pratīkāra treaty, an alliance of returned favours.

4.123 Narayana

upakāraṃ karomyasya mamāpyeṣa kariṣyati | ayaṃ cāpi pratīkāro rāma-sugrīvayoriva ||

'I do him a good turn; he too will do one for me': this too is pratīkāra, as between Rāma and Sugrīva.

Meaning today and context

Rāma helped Sugrīva regain his kingdom and Sugrīva helped Rāma find Sītā. Helping first, trusting the other to respond, can begin a lasting alliance.

Dūradarśin gives the second form of the pratīkāra treaty, with the example of Rāma and Sugrīva.

4.124 Narayana

ekārthāṃ samyaguddiśya yātrāṃ yatra hi gacchataḥ | susaṃhita-prayāṇastu sandhiḥ saṃyoga ucyate ||

When two set out together on a campaign with a single, well-agreed aim, marching in close concert, that treaty is called saṃyoga.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: a joint venture for a shared goal.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

āvayoryodha-mukhyābhyāṃ mad-arthaḥ sādhyatāmiti | yasminpaṇaḥ prakriyate sa sandhiḥ puruṣāntaraḥ ||

Where the terms are: 'Let my aim be accomplished by the chief warriors of us both', that treaty is puruṣāntara.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: peace bought by lending one's best fighters to the other side's cause.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

4.126 Narayana

tvayaikena madīyo'rthaḥ samprasādhyastvasāviti | yatra śatruḥ paṇaṃ kuryātso'dṛṣṭa-puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ ||

Where the enemy sets the terms: 'You alone must accomplish this aim of mine', that is known as adṛṣṭa-puruṣa.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: peace on condition of doing the stronger party's work alone.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

4.127 Narayana

Where a powerful enemy is appeased by the price of one part of the land, those who know treaties call it ādiṣṭa.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: peace bought by giving up part of one's territory.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

sva-sainyena tu sandhānamātmādiṣṭa udāhṛtaḥ | kriyate prāṇa-rakṣārthaṃ sarva-dānādupagrahaḥ ||

A pact made by handing over one's own army is called ātmādiṣṭa. One made by giving up everything to save one's life is upagraha.

Meaning today and context

Definitions from old statecraft: peace bought with one's army, or with everything one has, to survive.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

4.129 Narayana

kośāṃśenārdha-kośena sarva-kośena vā punaḥ | śiṣṭasya pratirakṣārthaṃ parikraya udāhṛtaḥ ||

A treaty paid for with part of the treasury, half of it, or the whole of it, to protect what remains, is called parikraya.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: peace bought with money to save the rest.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

4.130 Narayana

bhuvāṃ sāravatīnāṃ tu dānāducchinna ucyate | bhūmy-uttha-phala-dānena sarveṇa para-bhūṣaṇaḥ ||

One made by giving up fertile lands is called ucchinna; one made by giving all the produce of the land is para-bhūṣaṇa.

Meaning today and context

Definitions from old statecraft: peace bought with one's best land or its whole harvest.

Dūradarśin continues defining the treaties.

4.131 Narayana

paricchinnaṃ phalaṃ yatra pratiskandhena dīyate | skandhopaneyaṃ taṃ prāhuḥ sandhiṃ sandhi-vicakṣaṇāḥ ||

Where a fixed amount of produce is paid in instalments, carried on the shoulder, those skilled in treaties call it skandhopaneya.

Meaning today and context

A definition from old statecraft: peace kept by paying tribute in instalments.

Dūradarśin completes the definitions of the sixteen treaties.

4.132 Narayana

parasparopakārastu maitrī sambandhakastathā | upahāraśca vijñeyāścatvāraścaiva sandhayaḥ ||

Mutual help, friendship, alliance by kinship, and the gift: these should be known as the four treaties.

Meaning today and context

A summary from old statecraft: agreements rest on mutual help, friendship, family ties or payment.

Having listed sixteen treaties, Dūradarśin says they reduce to four main kinds.

4.133 Narayana

eka evopahārastu sandhiretanmataṃ hi naḥ | upahārasya bhedāstu sarve'nye maitra-varjitāḥ ||

In our view there is only one treaty, the gift; all the others are varieties of the gift, lacking friendship.

Meaning today and context

A blunt observation: most deals between unequal parties are really about what is handed over, and friendship is absent from them. It reminds us to tell real bonds from transactions.

Dūradarśin gives his own view: in practice every treaty with a stronger power is a kind of gift-treaty.

4.134 Narayana

abhiyoktā balī yasmādalabdhvā na nivartate | upahārādṛte tasmātsaṃdhiranyo na vidyate ||

Since a powerful aggressor does not turn back without gaining something, there is no treaty other than the gift.

Describes ancient statecraft; not advice to give in to extortion, threats or abuse. If you are threatened, contact 112 (or 181 for women's helpline).

Meaning today and context

A realistic note on power: a stronger party rarely walks away with nothing. In negotiation, knowing what you can concede helps end a conflict on bearable terms.

Dūradarśin explains why the gift is the only real treaty with a stronger attacker.

4.135 Narayana

ādhi-vyādhi-parītāpādadya śvo vā vināśine | ko hi nāma śarīrāya dharmāpetaṃ samācaret ||

Who indeed would act against dharma for the sake of a body that, beset by worry and disease, may perish today or tomorrow?

The verse speaks of the body's frailty to steer one away from wrongdoing, not to make life seem worthless. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Since life is short and uncertain, it is not worth doing wrong to gain comfort or advantage for it. Integrity outlasts whatever we might grab.

The swan king asks the learned ministers what he should do; Dūradarśin answers that there is nothing to deliberate when dharma is plain.

4.136 Narayana

jalāntaścandra-capalaṃ jīvitaṃ khalu dehinām | tathā-vidhamiti jñātvā śaśvat-kalyāṇamācaret ||

The life of embodied beings is as unsteady as the moon's reflection in water. Knowing it to be so, one should always do what is good.

About using life well, not a reason for despair. If thoughts of death are weighing on you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Life can change in a moment, like the moon's image trembling on water. That is a reason not to postpone kindness and good deeds.

Dūradarśin continues advising the swan king Hiraṇyagarbha to choose peace and right conduct.

4.137 Narayana

vātābhra-vibhramamidaṃ vasudhādhipatyam | āpāta-mātra-madhuro viṣayopabhogaḥ | prāṇāstṛṇāgra-jala-bindu-samāna-lolā | dharmaḥ sakhā paramaho paraloka-yāne ||

Lordship over the earth is as fleeting as a cloud tossed by the wind; the enjoyment of sense-objects is sweet only at first contact; life is as unsteady as a drop of water on the tip of a blade of grass. Ah, dharma alone is the true friend on the journey to the next world.

About what endures, not a reason to give up on life or responsibilities. If you are thinking about death, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Power, pleasure and even life itself do not last. What we can rely on to the end is the good we have done and the way we have lived.

Dūradarśin continues his advice to Hiraṇyagarbha.

4.138 Narayana

mṛga-tṛṣṇā-samaṃ vīkṣya saṃsāraṃ kṣaṇa-bhaṅguram | sajjanaiḥ saṅgataṃ kuryāddharmāya ca sukhāya ca ||

Seeing the world of change as a mirage, breaking up in a moment, one should keep company with good people, for the sake of both dharma and happiness.

Meaning today and context

Because so much in life is passing, the company we keep matters greatly. Good people make it easier both to live rightly and to be happy.

Dūradarśin closes this run of verses, urging alliance with the good.

4.139 Narayana

aśvamedha-sahasraṃ ca satyaṃ ca tulayā dhṛtam | aśvamedha-sahasrāddhi satyameva viśiṣyate ||

A thousand horse-sacrifices and truth were weighed in the balance: truth outweighs even a thousand horse-sacrifices.

Meaning today and context

No grand display of religion or generosity is worth as much as simply being truthful. A promise kept is the strongest foundation for any agreement.

Dūradarśin tells the swan king to make the peace he recommends, sealed by an oath of truth, and gives this reason.

4.140 Narayana

sandhiḥ sarva-mahī-bhujāṃ vijayināmastu pramodaḥ sadā | santaḥ santu nirāpadaḥ sukṛtināṃ kīrtiściraṃ vardhatām | nīti-vāra-vilāsinīva satataṃ vakṣaḥ-sthale saṃsthitā | vaktraṃ cumbatu mantriṇāmaharaharbhūyānmahānutsavaḥ ||

May there be peace among all victorious kings; may there be joy always; may the good be free from misfortune; may the fame of those who do good grow long. May statecraft, like a courtesan, ever rest on the breast of ministers and kiss their faces; may there be great festivity day after day.

Meaning today and context

A closing blessing: peace between rulers, safety for the good, and wise counsel always close at hand for those who advise.

After the peace is concluded, the princes thank Viṣṇuśarman; he closes the book with this benediction.

As long as the moon-crested Śiva remains the beloved dwelling of the Daughter of the Snow Mountain; as long as Lakṣmī flashes in the heart of Murāri like lightning in a cloud; as long as the golden mountain Meru stands, like a forest fire of which the sun is a spark: so long may this collection of tales composed by Nārāyaṇa remain current.

May Indra, sending the rains desired, make the earth rich with abundant crops; may the foremost brahmins duly please the gods with sacrifices; may the company of the good, firm and growing, last until the end of the age; and may the cruel words of slanderers, hard to bear as a coat of thunderbolts, all fall utterly silent.
