Book 3: Vigraha, war

3.1 Narayana

haṃsaiḥ saha mayūrāṇāṃ vigrahe tulya-vikrame | viśvāsya vañcitā haṃsāḥ kākaiḥ sthitvāri-mandire ||

In the war between the swans and the peacocks, equal in valour, the swans were cheated because they trusted the crows, who were living in the enemy's house.

Meaning today and context

The whole book turns on one mistake: trusting people whose loyalties lie with the other side. In any contest of equals, misplaced trust decides the outcome more than strength.

The opening verse of Book 3 (Vigraha, war): Viṣṇuśarman gives the princes the one-line summary of the story he is about to tell.

3.2 Narayana

yadi na syānnarapatiḥ samyaṅ-netā tataḥ prajā | akarṇa-dhārā jaladhau viplaveteha nauriva ||

If there were no king to lead the people rightly, they would founder here like a ship on the ocean without a helmsman.

Meaning today and context

A group without clear, fair leadership drifts and breaks apart, whether it is a team, an organisation or a family in crisis. Someone has to hold the rudder, and hold it well.

Book 3 begins: the swan Hiraṇyagarbha is made king of all the water-birds on Karpūra island, and the narrator gives the reason a people needs a ruler.

3.3 Narayana

prajāṃ saṃrakṣati nṛpaḥ sā vardhayati pārthivam | vardhanādrakṣaṇaṃ śreyastad-abhāve sadapyasat ||

The king protects the people, and the people make the king prosper. But protecting is better than increasing, for without protection even what exists becomes as if it were not.

Not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Leaders and the people they lead sustain each other. And before chasing growth, secure what you already have: a team, a savings, a relationship that is not protected can be lost entirely.

The narrator continues on kingship as the swan Hiraṇyagarbha takes the throne.

3.4 Narayana

payaḥ-pānaṃ bhujaṅgānāṃ kevalaṃ viṣa-vardhanam | upadeśo hi mūrkhāṇāṃ prakopāya na śāntaye ||

Giving milk to snakes only increases their venom; advice given to fools leads to anger, not to calm.

Meaning today and context

Some people take advice as an insult, and pushing it on them only makes them angrier. Before advising, ask whether the person is open to hearing it; sometimes silence is kinder and wiser.

The crane Dīrghamukha reports to King Hiraṇyagarbha that when he praised his king to the birds of the Vindhya, they only grew angry; he quotes this maxim.

3.5 Narayana

vidvānevopadeṣṭavyo nāvidvāṃstu kadācana | vānarānupadiśyātha sthāna-bhraṣṭā yayuḥ khagāḥ ||

Only the wise should be advised, never the unwise: the birds who advised the monkeys lost their homes and had to leave.

Meaning today and context

Unasked-for advice to someone who resents it can cost you dearly. Offer counsel where it is wanted and can be used; elsewhere, help by example rather than lectures.

Dīrghamukha adds a second maxim and then tells the story of the birds who advised the monkeys.

3.6 Narayana

asmābhirnirmitā nīḍāścañcu-mātrāhṛtaistṛṇaiḥ | hasta-pādādi-saṃyuktā yūyaṃ kimavasīdatha ||

We built our nests with grass carried in our beaks alone; you have hands, feet and the rest, so why do you suffer?

Meaning today and context

The birds were right, but said it from comfort to those in misery, and it sounded like mockery. Even true words, given at the wrong moment and in the wrong tone, can provoke resentment.

In the story told by Dīrghamukha, birds sheltered in their nests on a silk-cotton tree by the Narmadā see monkeys shivering in the monsoon rain and call down to them; the angry monkeys later destroy their nests.

3.7 Narayana

anyadā bhūṣaṇaṃ puṃsaḥ kṣamā lajjeva yoṣitaḥ | parākramaḥ paribhave vaiyātyaṃ surateṣviva ||

At other times forbearance is a man's ornament, as modesty is a woman's; but valour when insulted, as boldness is in love-making.

Standing up for oneself is not a licence for revenge or violence; the comparisons reflect the gender roles of their time. If you are in danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Patience is usually the better choice, but there are moments when quietly accepting humiliation is not right and one must stand up for oneself. The skill is knowing which moment is which; standing firm does not have to mean violence.

Dīrghamukha tells how the Vindhya birds, angered that he called their peacock king no king, rose to kill him, and he showed his own strength; he quotes this to justify it.

3.8 Narayana

ātmanaśca pareṣāṃ ca yaḥ samīkṣya balābalam | antaraṃ naiva jānāti sa tiraskriyate'ribhiḥ ||

He who, having looked at the strength and weakness of himself and of others, still does not grasp the difference between them, is humiliated by his enemies.

Meaning today and context

Bravado without an honest measure of your own strength and the other side's ends in humiliation. Before a confrontation, a negotiation or a big bet, assess both sides soberly.

King Hiraṇyagarbha laughs at the crane who picked a fight alone among enemy birds, and answers with this maxim.

3.9 Narayana

suciraṃ hi carannityaṃ kṣetre sasyamabuddhimān | dvīpi-carma-paricchanno vāg-doṣādgardabho hataḥ ||

The foolish donkey, covered with a leopard's skin, grazed in the field of crops every day for a long time, yet was killed through the fault of his own voice.

Meaning today and context

A borrowed image can carry you for a while, but careless words reveal who you really are. One unguarded outburst can undo a long pretence; better to be genuine and to watch your tongue.

The king continues, pointing to the fable of the washerman's donkey disguised in a tiger's skin, which he then tells to the crane.

3.10 Narayana

sevitavyo mahā-vṛkṣaḥ phala-cchāyā-samanvitaḥ | yadi daivātphalaṃ nāsti cchāyā kena nivāryate ||

One should serve a great tree that has both fruit and shade; if by fate there is no fruit, who can take away the shade?

Choosing a good employer or mentor is wise; this is not advice to accept abuse or exploitation at work.

Meaning today and context

Attach yourself to a strong, generous institution or mentor: even if the big reward does not come, you still gain protection, learning and standing. A good base pays something even in a bad year.

Dīrghamukha reports how the Vindhya birds, mocking his gentle swan king, told him one should attach oneself to a powerful master.

3.11 Narayana

hīna-sevā na kartavyā kartavyo mahadāśrayaḥ | payo'pi śauṇḍikī-haste vāruṇītyabhidhīyate ||

One should not serve the low; one should take shelter with the great. Even milk, in the hand of a woman who sells liquor, is called wine.

Choosing a good employer or mentor is wise; this is not advice to accept abuse or exploitation at work.

Meaning today and context

Who you work for and keep company with colours how others see you, whatever your own worth. A good person in a bad setting will be judged by the setting.

The Vindhya birds continue lecturing Dīrghamukha on whom to serve.

3.12 Narayana

mahānapyalpatāṃ yāti nirguṇe guṇa-vistaraḥ | ādhārādheya-bhāvena gajendra iva darpaṇe ||

Even the great becomes small when its wealth of qualities rests on something worthless, through the relation of the container and the contained, like a lordly elephant seen in a mirror.

Meaning today and context

Talent placed in a small or poor setting looks small. Where you put your abilities matters: the right platform lets them show at their true size.

The Vindhya birds add that greatness itself shrinks when it depends on a worthless base, again belittling the swan king's followers.

3.13 Narayana

ajā siṃha-prasādena vane carati nirbhayam | rāmamāsādya laṅkāyāṃ lebhe rājyaṃ vibhīṣaṇaḥ ||

By the lion's favour a goat roams the forest without fear; by coming to Rāma, Vibhīṣaṇa won the kingdom of Laṅkā.

Meaning today and context

The right ally or patron can protect and lift someone who could not stand alone. Choosing whom you side with, especially when you are weak, can change everything.

The Vindhya birds go on: under a powerful protector even the weak are safe.

3.14 Narayana

vyapadeśe'pi siddhiḥ syādatiśakte narādhipe | śaśino vyapadeśena śaśakāḥ sukhamāsate ||

When the king is very powerful, success comes even from merely invoking his name: the hares live happily just by the name of the moon.

Meaning today and context

A strong reputation does much of the work: the name of a respected institution or person opens doors and deters trouble. It also means borrowed names carry weight, so they should be used honestly.

The Vindhya birds then tell the fable of the hares who drove off an elephant herd by claiming to be messengers of the moon.

3.15 Narayana

spṛśannapi gajo hanti jighrannapi bhujaṅgamaḥ | pālayannapi bhūpālaḥ prahasannapi durjanaḥ ||

An elephant kills even by touching, a snake even by smelling, a king even while protecting, and a wicked man even while smiling.

Meaning today and context

Some forces are dangerous even when they mean no harm, and some people are dangerous most when they are friendliest. Keep a safe distance from the very powerful and the ill-intentioned, however pleasant they seem.

In the hares' fable, the old hare Vijaya, going to face the elephant king, reflects that he must keep his distance and so speaks from a hilltop.

3.16 Narayana

udyateṣvapi śastreṣu dūto vadati nānyathā | sadaivāvadhya-bhāvena yathārthasya hi vācakaḥ ||

Even with weapons raised against him, an envoy does not speak otherwise; being always inviolable, he speaks things exactly as they are.

Meaning today and context

Someone whose role is to carry a message must deliver it faithfully, even when it is unwelcome. In any team, the person reporting bad news should be able to speak plainly without fear, and should be protected for doing so.

The hare Vijaya, presenting himself to the elephant king as the moon's envoy, says this before delivering his message.

3.17 Narayana

svadeśajaṃ kulācāra-viśuddhamupadhāśucim | mantrajñamavyasaninaṃ vyabhicāra-vivarjitam ||

Native to the country, pure in family and conduct, tested and found honest, versed in counsel, free from vices, never straying...

'Brahmin' and 'good family' here mean learning and conduct, never birth, caste or region; the verse must not be used to exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

The qualities to look for in an adviser or senior hire have not changed: proven integrity, discretion, freedom from addictions and steady loyalty matter as much as expertise.

At the peacock king's court the vulture minister Dūradarśin asks who the swan king's chief minister is; told it is the learned cakravāka Sarvajña, he approves and lists the marks of a good minister (continued in the next verse).

3.18 Narayana

adhīta-vyavahārārthaṃ maulaṃ khyātaṃ vipaścitam | arthasyotpādakaṃ caiva vidadhyānmantriṇaṃ nṛpaḥ ||

...one who has studied law and practice, of long-standing family, well known, wise, and able to produce wealth: such a man a king should appoint as minister.

'Brahmin' and 'good family' here mean learning and conduct, never birth, caste or region; the verse must not be used to exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

A good counsellor knows the rules, has a track record people can check, thinks clearly and adds real value. Choose advisers on those grounds, not on flattery or friendship.

The vulture minister Dūradarśin completes his list of a minister's qualities.

3.19 Narayana

rājā mattaḥ śiśuścaiva pramadā dhana-garvitaḥ | aprāpyamapi vāñchanti kiṃ punarlabhyate'pi yat ||

A king, a drunkard, a child, a woman and a man proud of his wealth desire even the unattainable, let alone what can actually be had.

Lumping women with drunkards and children reflects the prejudices of its time, is not the app's view, and must never be used to demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

Power, intoxication and wealth all breed a sense of entitlement that wants even what cannot be had. The verse is said by a king to justify his own grasping, which is itself the point.

A parrot at the peacock king's court claims that Karpūra island already belongs to Jambūdvīpa and so to the peacock; the king agrees, quoting this.

3.20 Narayana

bhakto guṇī śucirdakṣaḥ pragalbho'vyasanī kṣamī | brāhmaṇaḥ paramarmajño dūtaḥ syātpratibhānavān ||

An envoy should be devoted, virtuous, honest, capable, confident, free from vices, patient, a Brahmin, one who knows the other side's weak points, and quick-witted.

'Brahmin' and 'good family' here mean learning and conduct, never birth, caste or region; the verse must not be used to exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

Whoever represents you in a hard negotiation or difficult conversation needs loyalty, composure, sharp wits and an understanding of the other side. Choose your spokesperson as carefully as your message.

Dīrghamukha asks the peacock king to send his own envoy too; the king asks who should go, and describes the ideal envoy.

3.21 Narayana

prasādaṃ kurute patyuḥ sampattiṃ nābhivāñchati | kālimā kālakūṭasya nāpaitīśvara-saṅgamāt ||

He wins the master favour and does not covet wealth for himself. [Another's nature does not change:] the blackness of the kālakūṭa poison did not leave it even through contact with Śiva.

'Brahmin' and 'good family' here mean learning and conduct, never birth, caste or region; the verse must not be used to exclude anyone.

Meaning today and context

A good representative serves the cause, not his own pocket. The second line says a person's basic nature is not changed just by standing near someone great: judge people by their own conduct.

The vulture minister agrees there are many possible envoys but says a Brahmin should be chosen, giving this reason.

3.22 Narayana

khalaḥ karoti durvṛttaṃ nūnaṃ phalati sādhuṣu | daśānano'haratsītāṃ bandhanaṃ syānmahodadheḥ ||

The wicked man does the evil deed, and surely its fruit falls on the good: ten-headed Rāvaṇa carried off Sītā, and it was the ocean that was put in bonds.

Meaning today and context

Innocent people near a wrongdoer often pay for his wrongs. That is a practical reason to be careful whom you are associated with at work or in business.

The peacock king tells the parrot to go as envoy with the crane; the parrot refuses to travel with the crane, calling him a scoundrel, and quotes this.

3.23 Narayana

na sthātavyaṃ na gantavyaṃ durjanena samaṃ kvacit | kāka-saṅgāddhato haṃsastiṣṭhangacchaṃśca vartakaḥ ||

Never stay with a wicked person, nor travel with one: through the crow's company the swan was killed while staying, and the quail while going.

The swan and the quail did nothing wrong; they were simply beside the culprit when consequences came. Bad company can cost you even if your own hands are clean.

Meaning today and context

Confidence is easy before the test. Untested bravado often collapses on contact with real opposition, so respect a challenge you have not yet faced.

Sarvajña warns the king against overconfidence about the coming war.

3.44 Narayana

na tathotthāpyate grāvā prāṇibhirdāruṇā yathā | alpopāyānmahā-siddhiretan-mantra-phalaṃ mahat ||

A boulder is not lifted by living creatures [straining] as it is by a wooden lever: great success from small means, that is the great fruit of good counsel.

Meaning today and context

Thinking a problem through often achieves with little effort what force cannot. Before throwing more hours or money at something, look for the lever.

Sarvajña praises planning over brute force.

3.45 Narayana

yathā kāla-kṛtodyogātkṛṣiḥ phalavatī bhavet | tadvannītiriyaṃ deva cirātphalati na kṣaṇāt ||

As farming bears fruit from work undertaken at the right season, so this policy, O king, bears fruit in time, not in a moment.

Meaning today and context

Good strategy, like farming, needs the right timing and then patience. Whether building a career, a business or a relationship, do the work at the right time and give it time to grow.

Sarvajña tells the king to deal patiently with the war now that it has come.

3.46 Narayana

dūre bhīrutvamāsanne śūratā mahato guṇaḥ | vipattau hi mahānloke dhīratvamadhigacchati ||

Fear while danger is far off, courage when it is near: this is the quality of the great. In calamity the great person attains steadiness.

Meaning today and context

Worry has its use while a problem is still far off, as a spur to prepare; once it arrives, the time for fear is over and steadiness is what counts. Prepare early, stay calm when it comes.

Sarvajña describes the right attitude of a great leader facing danger.

3.47 Narayana

pratyūhaḥ sarva-siddhīnāmuttāpaḥ prathamaḥ kila | atiśītalamapyambhaḥ kiṃ bhinatti na bhūbhṛtaḥ ||

The first obstacle to every success, they say, is agitation; does not even very cold water split mountains?

Meaning today and context

Heat and haste undo more efforts than lack of strength. Calm, steady persistence, like water wearing through rock, achieves what agitation cannot.

Sarvajña cautions the king against hot-headed haste.

3.48 Narayana

balinā saha yoddhavyamiti nāsti nidarśanam | tadyuddhaṃ hastinā sārdhaṃ narāṇāṃ mṛtyumāvahet ||

There is no precept that one must fight with the stronger; such a fight, like men fighting an elephant, brings death.

Meaning today and context

You are not obliged to take on every fight, least of all against a far stronger opponent. Stepping back, negotiating or waiting is not cowardice; it is often the only sensible course.

Sarvajña ends his warning: there is no rule that one must fight a stronger foe.

3.49 Narayana

sa mūrkhaḥ kālamaprāpya yo'pakartari vartate | kalirbalavatā sārdhaṃ kīṭa-pakṣodgamo yathā ||

He is a fool who moves against one who has wronged him before the time is ripe. A quarrel with someone stronger is like an insect growing wings: it only brings on its end.

About timing and restraint, not a plan for revenge or harming anyone. If you are in danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

When someone has wronged you, the urge to hit back at once is strong. If they are more powerful, striking before you are ready usually hurts only you; waiting and preparing is not cowardice.

In the war between the swans and the peacocks, the swan king Hiraṇyagarbha's minister, the cakravāka Sarvajña, warns him not to rush into battle while the peacock king's envoy, a parrot, waits at the court.

3.50 Narayana

kaurmaṃ saṅkocamāsthāya prahāramapi marṣayet | prāpta-kāle tu nītijña uttiṣṭhetkrūra-sarpavat ||

Drawing in like a tortoise, one should bear even a blow; but when the time is right, the one who knows policy should rise up like a fierce snake.

Meaning today and context

There are seasons to absorb pressure quietly and seasons to act firmly. Knowing which one you are in, rather than reacting to every hit, is the skill.

The cakravāka Sarvajña continues advising King Hiraṇyagarbha to bide his time before the coming war.

3.51 Narayana

mahatyalpe'pyupāyajñaḥ samameva bhavetkṣamaḥ | samunmūlayituṃ vṛkṣāṃstṛṇānīva nadīrayaḥ ||

One who knows the means is equally able against the great and the small, just as the rush of a river uproots trees as easily as grass.

Meaning today and context

Size of a problem matters less than having the right approach. A well-chosen method can move what force alone cannot.

The cakravāka Sarvajña tells King Hiraṇyagarbha that one who knows the right means can overcome great and small alike.

3.52 Narayana

ekaḥ śataṃ yodhayati prākāra-stho dhanurdharaḥ | śataṃ śata-sahasrāṇi tasmāddurgaṃ viśiṣyate ||

One archer standing on a rampart can fight a hundred; a hundred can fight a hundred thousand. Therefore a fort is held to be supreme.

Military advice from a fable; not a justification for violence.

Meaning today and context

A secure position multiplies whatever strength you have. Before any hard contest, build your base: savings, skills, people you can count on.

Sarvajña advises keeping the parrot envoy waiting until the fort is made ready, and praises the value of a fort.

3.53 Narayana

adurga-viṣayaḥ kasya nāreḥ paribhavāspadam | adurgo'nāśrayo rājā pota-cyuta-manuṣyavat ||

A land without a fort: which enemy does it not invite to scorn it? A king without a fort has no refuge, like a man fallen from a ship.

Meaning today and context

Without any fallback, every setback becomes a crisis. Having somewhere to stand, whether savings, family or a support network, keeps you from drowning when things go wrong.

Sarvajña continues to King Hiraṇyagarbha on why the kingdom needs a fort.

3.54 Narayana

One should build a fort with a great moat and high walls, with engines of defence and water, resting on a mountain, river, desert or forest.

Meaning today and context

Sarvajña describes to King Hiraṇyagarbha how a fort should be built.

3.55 Narayana

vistīrṇatāti-vaiṣamyaṃ rasa-dhānyedhma-saṅgrahaḥ | praveśaścāpa-sāraśca saptaitā durga-sampadaḥ ||

Wide extent, very rough ground, stores of liquids, grain and firewood, an entrance, and a way out: these are the seven assets of a fort.

Meaning today and context

A list of what a well-supplied fort needs, including a way out as well as a way in.

Sarvajña lists the seven qualities of a good fort for King Hiraṇyagarbha.

3.56 Narayana

yo yatra kuśalaḥ kārye taṃ tatra viniyojayet | karmasvadṛṣṭa-karmā yaḥ śāstrajño'pi vimuhyati ||

Whoever is skilled at a task, appoint him to that task. One who has never seen the work done is confused by it, even if he knows the books.

Meaning today and context

Give each job to the person who has actually done it well. Degrees and theory help, but hands-on experience is what keeps someone steady when the real work begins.

King Hiraṇyagarbha asks whom to put in charge of the fort; the cakravāka Sarvajña answers, and advises calling the crane, who knows such work.

3.57 Narayana

dhānyānāṃ saṅgraho rājannuttamaḥ sarva-saṅgrahāt | nikṣiptaṃ hi mukhe ratnaṃ na kuryātprāṇa-dhāraṇam ||

O king, a store of grain is the best of all stores; for a jewel placed in the mouth does not keep one alive.

A maxim about priorities, not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

In hard times, the basics matter more than valuables. Secure food, shelter and essentials before luxuries.

The crane, asked to see to the fort, says the great lake already serves as one, and advises the king to lay in stores on its central island.

3.58 Narayana

khyātaḥ sarva-rasānāṃ hi lavaṇo rasa uttamaḥ | gṛhṇīyāttaṃ vinā tena vyañjanaṃ gomayāyate ||

Salt is famed as the best of all tastes; one should lay it in, for without it food tastes like cow-dung.

Meaning today and context

Practical advice on provisioning: the humble basics are what make everything else usable.

The crane continues advising King Hiraṇyagarbha on what to stock in the fort.

3.59 Narayana

ātma-pakṣaṃ parityajya para-pakṣeṣu yo rataḥ | sa parairhanyate mūḍho nīla-varṇa-śṛgālavat ||

The fool who abandons his own side and delights in the other side is killed by those others, like the blue jackal.

Meaning today and context

Leaving behind the people who know and support you to impress a more glamorous crowd is risky: the new crowd does not owe you loyalty, and the old one may stop protecting you.

A crow, Meghavarṇa, arrives from Siṃhala seeking service with King Hiraṇyagarbha; the cakravāka Sarvajña warns that a crow is a land bird, of the enemy's kind, and introduces the story of the blue jackal.

3.60 Narayana

yaḥ svabhāvo hi yasyāsti sa nityaṃ duratikramaḥ | śvā yadi kriyate rājā tatkiṃ nāśnātyupānaham ||

Whatever a creature's nature is, that is always hard to get past. If a dog is made king, will it not still chew a shoe?

About habits and conduct; not a reason to write anyone off as unable to change, or to judge people by birth.

Meaning today and context

A new title or appearance does not change deep habits overnight. Notice your own ingrained patterns honestly, and judge others by their conduct over time rather than by their new colour.

In the story of the blue jackal, who fell into a vat of indigo and made himself king of the forest, then drove away his own kin, an old jackal tells the others to howl together at dusk, since the blue jackal will not be able to keep from howling too.

3.61 Narayana

chidraṃ marma ca vīryaṃ ca sarvaṃ vetti nijo ripuḥ | dahatyantargataścaiva śuṣkaṃ vṛkṣamivānalaḥ ||

An enemy from one's own circle knows every gap, every weak spot and every strength. Being inside, he burns one up, as fire burns a dry tree from within.

Meaning today and context

People you have hurt or pushed away from your own circle know you best, which is why treating them badly is so costly. It is also a reminder to keep close relationships healthy.

The blue jackal howls, is recognised and is killed by the tiger; Sarvajña draws the lesson of the story for King Hiraṇyagarbha.

3.62 Narayana

nandaṃ jaghāna cāṇakyastīkṣṇa-dūta-prayogataḥ | taddūrāntaritaṃ dūtaṃ paśyedvīra-samanvitaḥ ||

Cāṇakya killed Nanda by sending a ruthless envoy. Therefore one should see an envoy from a distance, surrounded by brave men.

Statecraft from a fable; not a licence for suspicion of everyone or for violence. If you are in danger, call 112.

Meaning today and context

Be careful with people sent by a rival: meet them openly and with others present. Reasonable caution, not paranoia.

Sarvajña tells King Hiraṇyagarbha that the fort is ready and the parrot envoy may now be received, but only from a distance and with warriors at hand.

3.63 Narayana

That is no assembly where there are no elders; they are no elders who do not speak what is right; that is no righteousness where there is no truth; that is no truth which slides into deceit.

Meaning today and context

A meeting, family council or board is only worth something if experienced people are there and are willing to say what is right, truthfully and without tricks. Seniority alone is not wisdom; speaking up honestly is.

The parrot envoy insolently orders King Hiraṇyagarbha to submit; the angry king wants him thrown out and the crow offers to kill him, but Sarvajña calms them both with this verse.

3.64 Narayana

dūto mleccho'pyavadhyaḥ syādrājā dūta-mukho yataḥ | udyateṣvapi śastreṣu dūto vadati nānyathā ||

An envoy must not be killed, even a barbarian, for the king speaks through the envoy's mouth. Even with weapons raised, the envoy speaks nothing but what he was told.

Meaning today and context

Don't shoot the messenger. The person delivering bad news or a harsh demand is usually not its author; answer the source, and treat the messenger with respect.

Sarvajña reminds King Hiraṇyagarbha and the crow that it is a king's duty not to harm an envoy, however rude.

3.65 Narayana

svāpakarṣaṃ parotkarṣaṃ dūtoktairmanyate tu kaḥ | sadaivāvadhya-bhāvena dūtaḥ sarvaṃ hi jalpati ||

Who takes his own lowering or the other's raising from an envoy's words? Knowing he cannot be killed, an envoy always says anything at all.

Meaning today and context

Posturing from the other side in a negotiation is not a fact about you. Don't let a spokesperson's boasts shake your confidence or provoke you.

Sarvajña adds that no one should take an envoy's boasts to heart; the king and the crow calm down and the parrot is sent home with gifts.

3.66 Narayana

asantuṣṭā dvijā naṣṭāḥ santuṣṭāśca mahībhṛtaḥ | salajjā gaṇikā naṣṭā nirlajjāśca kulāṅganā ||

Discontented brahmins are ruined, and contented kings; a modest courtesan is ruined, and a shameless wife of good family.

Reflects the social roles and prejudices of its time, not the app's view. Never use it to demean or control women, or to judge anyone by birth; brāhmaṇa here means a role of learning and conduct.

Meaning today and context

In Book 3 (Vigraha), many of his soldiers and generals killed in ambush, the peacock king Citravarṇa, dejected, asks his vulture minister Dūradarśin whether some arrogance of his is to blame.

dakṣaḥ śriyamadhigacchati pathyāśī kalyatāṃ sukhamarogī | udyukto vidyāntaṃ dharmārtha-yaśāṃsi ca vinītaḥ ||

The capable person wins fortune; one who eats wholesome food, health; the healthy, happiness; the diligent, the end of learning; and the disciplined, dharma, wealth and fame.

General wisdom about eating well; not medical or dietary advice.

Meaning today and context

Each good thing has its cause: skill brings prosperity, sensible eating brings health, effort brings mastery, and self-discipline brings a good name. There are no shortcuts.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), many of his soldiers and generals killed in ambush, the peacock king Citravarṇa, dejected, asks his vulture minister Dūradarśin whether some arrogance of his is to blame. He adds another maxim.

avidvānapi bhū-pālo vidyā-vṛddhopasevayā | parāṃ śriyamavāpnoti jalāsanna-taruryathā ||

Even an unlearned king reaches the highest fortune by serving those rich in learning, like a tree that grows beside water.

Meaning today and context

You do not need to know everything yourself. Staying close to wise, experienced people and listening to them lets you flourish, as a tree near water does.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin answers the peacock king Citravarṇa, who has lost much of his army after ignoring his counsel.

pāpaṃ strī mṛgayā dyūtamartha-dūṣaṇameva ca | vāg-daṇḍayośca pāruṣyaṃ vyasanāni mahībhujām ||

Wrongdoing, women, hunting, gambling, misuse of wealth, and harshness in speech and punishment: these are the vices of kings.

"Women" here means a ruler's own obsessive indulgence; it reflects the prejudices of its time, is not the app's view, and must never be used to blame or demean women.

Meaning today and context

Power is usually lost through habits: compulsive pleasures, gambling, wasting money, harsh words and harsh punishments. Anyone with authority over others can check themselves against this list.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin answers the peacock king Citravarṇa, who has lost much of his army after ignoring his counsel. He lists the vices of rulers.

na sāhasaikānta-rasānuvartinā | na cāpyupāyopahatāntarātmanā | vibhūtayaḥ śakyamavāptumūrjitā | naye ca śaurye ca vasanti sampadaḥ ||

Great prosperity cannot be won by one who gives himself wholly to the thrill of rashness, nor by one whose mind is crippled by too much scheming: fortune lives in sound policy together with courage.

Meaning today and context

Recklessness and overthinking both fail. Success needs a sound plan and the courage to act on it, together.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin answers the peacock king Citravarṇa, who has lost much of his army after ignoring his counsel.

durmantriṇaṃ kamupayānti na nīti-doṣāḥ ? | santāpayanti kamapathya-bhujaṃ na rogāḥ ? | kaṃ śrīrna darpayati kaṃ na nihanti mṛtyuḥ | kaṃ strī-kṛtā na viṣayāḥ paritāpayanti ||

Whom, having bad counsellors, do the faults of bad policy not overtake? Whom, eating unwholesome food, do diseases not torment? Whom does fortune not make proud? Whom does death not strike? Whom do the pleasures that women stir up not torment?

The line on women reflects the prejudices of its time and the speaker's own craving; it is not the app's view and must never be used to blame or demean women. Not medical advice.

Meaning today and context

Some consequences are almost certain: bad advice brings bad results, poor habits bring illness, wealth tempts us to pride. Knowing this, choose advisers and habits with care.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin answers the peacock king Citravarṇa, who has lost much of his army after ignoring his counsel. He says the king, trusting his own strength and rashness, ignored counsel and spoke harshly, and now reaps the fruit of bad policy.

mudaṃ viṣādaḥ śaradaṃ himāgamas | tamo vivasvānsukṛtaṃ kṛtaghnatā | priyopapattiḥ śucamāpadaṃ nayaḥ | śriyaḥ samṛddhā api hanti durnayaḥ ||

Sorrow destroys joy; winter's coming destroys autumn; the sun destroys darkness; ingratitude destroys a good deed; getting what one loves destroys grief; good policy destroys misfortune; and bad policy destroys fortune, however great.

Meaning today and context

Just as night yields to the sun, even great wealth or success does not survive bad decisions. Good judgment, in turn, can carry us through trouble.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin answers the peacock king Citravarṇa, who has lost much of his army after ignoring his counsel. He adds another maxim on bad policy.

3.121 Narayana

yasya nāsti svayaṃ prajñā śāstraṃ tasya karoti kim? | locanābhyāṃ vihīnasya darpaṇaḥ kiṃ kariṣyati ||

What can scripture do for one who has no understanding of his own? What will a mirror do for one who has no eyes?

Meaning today and context

Books, advice and courses help only if we bring our own thinking to them. Learning needs a mind willing to see.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin thinks to himself that the peacock king, who darkened the moonlight of good counsel with harsh words, lacks understanding.

3.122 Narayana

devatāsu gurau goṣu rājasu brāhmaṇeṣu ca | niyantavyaḥ sadā kopo bāla-vṛddhātureṣu ca ||

Anger must always be held in check toward gods, teachers, cows, kings and brahmins, and toward children, the old and the sick.

"Brahmins" means those devoted to learning and goodness, by conduct, not by birth.

Meaning today and context

There are people we must never vent anger on: those we owe respect, and those who are weak or vulnerable, like children, the elderly and the sick.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the peacock king Citravarṇa admits his fault and asks for help; the vulture minister, though stung, reminds himself to hold back his anger.

A minister's wisdom shows in mending a broken alliance; a physician's, in a fever where all humours are disturbed. When all is well, who is not a wise man?

Meaning today and context

Anyone looks capable when things are easy. Real skill shows in a crisis, when things are broken and need mending.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin smiles and reassures the shaken peacock king Citravarṇa.

3.124 Narayana

The ignorant begin only small things and still become greatly flustered; the wise undertake great things and remain calm.

Meaning today and context

Panic does not depend on how big the task is but on the mind doing it. A clear head can carry a large project calmly.

In Book 3 (Vigraha), the vulture minister Dūradarśin smiles and reassures the shaken peacock king Citravarṇa.

One who would retrieve even a cowrie gone astray as if it were worth a thousand gold coins, yet at the right times is open-handed even with crores: fortune never leaves such a lion among kings.

kratau vivāhe vyasane ripu-kṣaye | yaśaskare karmaṇi mitra-saṅgrahe | priyāsu nārīṣvadhaneṣu bāndhaveṣv | ativyayo nāsti narādhipāṣṭasu ||

At a sacrifice, a wedding, in calamity, in destroying enemies, in a deed that brings fame, in winning friends, on beloved women and on poor relatives: in these eight, O king, there is no such thing as overspending.

About when spending is worth it; not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Some spending is an investment in people and meaning: helping in a crisis, supporting poor relatives, keeping friendships, marking life's big moments. Being stingy there costs more than it saves.

A fool, afraid of a small expense, brings about total ruin. What sensible man would abandon his goods out of excessive fear of the toll?

"Of good family" is to be read as of good character and upbringing, never as birth or caste. War strategy from a fable; never a licence for violence, revenge or deceiving anyone. In danger, call 112 (women: 181).
